Aaron and Glenys talk about weight. The global pandemic has put many people in a panic about changing weight. For those recovering from EDs and disordered eating, weight gain is often necessary and a part of healing, but hearing weight gain stigmatized constantly can feel like a huge setback. In this episode, our hosts talk about how they support their clients in normalizing weight gain and taking the focus of healing off of weight and put it more on supportive self-care. They also discussed how weight gain IS normal not only in healing but over a life time for most people. How do we help people navigate the mental and physical discomfort they feel in a changing body? Why is going back to “real” clothing such a pain?! Aaron and Glenys also recount (and cringe over) their pasts when they were steeped in diet culture and promoting weight loss, and how we can meet those feelings with compassion and have gratitude for the community they found in HAES® that allowed them to evolve at their own pace.

Aaron and Glenys talk with Caroline Dooner, humorist and author of The Fck It Diet,a book that helps chronic dieters untangle themselves from a dysfunctional relationship with food. She used to be a chronic dieter, fully convinced she was a food addict, until she realized that dieting and body hatred were actually the roots of the issue. Caroline talked about her journey towards true non-diet eating: how she tried to manage her PCOS with diets, her foray into the Paleo Diet, the time she tried to turn intuitive eating into a diet, and the epiphany that finally led her to say “Fck It!” to diets for good. She discussed how the science around the failure of intentional weight loss helped her realize why dieting was so frustratingly futile and how it led to her eventual binge episodes. Caroline also revealed a little bit about the next book she’s working on.

Jessica Wilson, MS, RD joined Aaron and Glenys to generously share her wisdom about how we need to create more inclusivity in the non-diet, Health at Every Size and eating disorder worlds. She talked about the inadequacy of dietetics education around trauma and what real nutrition looks like (vs the “calories in/calories out” paradigm). She also discussed her past involvement with the Health at Every Size Movement and the challenges with there, including an early lack of inclusivity beyond body size, and what needs to happen to continue to help create forward movement in the area of social justice.

Jessica Wilson is a Registered Dietitian working in private practice, and with the college population. In private practice she works with clients to learn to eat without having a road map for their choices, and instead to learn to become fun and flexible in their eating habits. In her consultation she drives progress and advancement in the eating disorder field by fostering curiosity, building capacity for change, and inviting constructive challenge. She centers and elevates the narratives and lived experiences of individuals with marginalized identities and honors that our bodies and our histories inform how each of us show up and share space.

Aaron and Glenys get to the topic you’ve all been waiting for: SEX. More specifically, sex and body image. In this episode, they speak to Dr. Linda Baggett, a licensed psychologist with a Ph.D. in counseling psychology and an expert in the intersections of gender, body image, sexuality, and trauma. They discuss all things sex and body image: the embarrassment many feel of being seen naked, the cult of secrecy around female genitals, the role of patriarchy in sexual relations, how sexual orientation intersects with body image, and so much more. Linda currently is part of a group practice called Thrive Psychology where she helps people learn to have healthy, pleasurable relationships with themselves, others, and their bodies, overcoming weight stigma, trauma, and repressive sexual and gender norms. She provides online therapy to residents of California.
