Justin Connor directed the film, The Golden Age and also plays the main role of Maya O'Malley in the film. When he began writing the script, he was watching a lot of documentaries about musicians' lives and became fascinated with the many details about their past, family lives, and struggles in terms of what propelled them to make such vibrant music.
Inspired by true events, The Golden Age is a musical film about the subversive pop star, Maya O'Malley who gets dropped from his music label after a string of incendiary remarks in the press.
Throughout the film, we see performances and interviews from Maya's past, as he uncovers the dark story of his abusive relationship with his father, while detailing his tumultuous journey towards spiritual redemption through friends, band mates, family members, and music critics, all set against the dreamy backdrop of his compelling, innovative songs.
In this episode, Justin talks about the idea of Ahimsa (non-violence toward all living things) and the connection to veganism. He also dives into his own spirituality and shares with us how his actions today are working FOR him rather than AGAINST him.

Anthony Bucci goes by the name "The Convicted Vegan" for a few reasons. First, because he spent nineteen years in prison, and the other, because after he found veganism he felt "convicted" to the lifestyle.
Anthony's story is intense. He grew up in a rough setting and his own lifestyle soon followed suit. He was running the streets, selling drugs, and obviously didn't care what he was eating. He comes from an Italian background where food played a big part in his family heritage.
After a spiritual awakening in prison, Anthony found the idea of veganism, and hasn't given it up since. He's now on a mission to inspire and help others by sharing his story!

John Brooks was the first black graduate from the University of Montana, where he studied ecology, and he has always had the passion to help people and the environment. He's protected US airways as an Air Marshall, and worked with US Customs and Homeland Security to prevent the unlawful trafficking of live exotic wildlife. He's spent 30 years with the US Department of Interior from California to Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Washington DC and New Jersey. John has also held the titles, Refuge Manager, Wildlife Inspector, Special Agent, Computer Forensics Specialist and augmented Federal Air Marshal. Although he retired in 2008 as a civil servant, he's continued to stress the importance of education through his work as an author, filmmaker, musician and community volunteer and believes education is the key to a healthy society. Although congressional candidates have already been decided for this election year, John comes on the podcast to discuss some of the ways we can contribute to a less-cruel, and more loving environment, not only to benefit people, but animals as well. John and I also take a few minutes to discuss the issues at hand regarding the police force, the Black Lives Matter movement, and everything that has lead up to our current movement. NOTE I personally try to keep my political views off of podcasts, with the intent of focusing on veganism, rather than causing division in those that don't identify with political parties at hand. I've provided a platform for those to speak about veganism, and align with their views in effort to do so. My intent is not to promote or disqualify any political party, but rather to promote the areas that align with veganism.* John Brooks:

Tony Howe is Roy Elam's right hand man at Donna Jean in San Diego. He's also the founder and creator of Scratch House; a local artisanal vegan cheese, charcuterie and sauce company that's always pushing the culinary limits!
Tony's love for cooking started when he was younger; his dad was in the Marine Corps, which didn't allow him to be at home with his family as much as he would've liked. Because of this, Tony started watching cooking shows and learning how to cook for his family.
Today, Tony has almost obsessed over perfecting the techniques and recipes for his vegan meats and cheeses, which are now being used in several San Diego restaurants and pop-ups.
In this episode, Tony talks about the science behind creating the perfect vegan cheese, and how his methods have changed over time, and with time (with fermentation).

Yi Ping Lai grew up in China and explains the connection between the over-population of homeless dogs and the dog meat trade. She tells her heartwarming story of how she grew up viewing dogs as a threat in China, and how she overcame her fear when she moved to America.
Today, Yi Ping is vegan and the founder of World of Angels Foundation; the US-based non-profit dedicated to alleviating the suffering of homeless companion animals in China by funding existing partner sanctuaries, establishing new sanctuaries, and ending the cruelty of the meat trade in China. Now, with the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus, or COVID-19, approximately 50,000 companion animals have been stranded in homes with no food or water due to travel restrictions and quarantine of their "owners". Yi is working hard to provide food and water for these animals, or place them in forever homes before it's too late.

Alexander Bvck is a sober animal rights activist, triathlete and musician, but things weren't always this way. Alex grew up in Northern Los Angeles and did a lot of acting as a kid which allowed him to live a much different life than most children his age. Looking back on his life, he realized that he may have developed some personality traits during this time that may have influenced some of his actions later in life.
Alex was exposed to veganism and vegetarianism in the punk scene as a teen, and as 16 years old, decided to give up all meat. At one point in his early adulthood, he went back to eating animals, and when he came to a point where he wanted to stop, he dealt with the same sort of addiction and peer pressure associated with his consumption of alcohol or other substances.
After watching Okja, Alex went vegetarian over night.
Tune in to hear Alexander's entire story, including what he continues to do to fight for the animals today, how he maintains his sobriety and sanity, and where you can hear his band "Bad Jesus" play!

Chef Bailey Ruskus, also known as "Chef Bai" comes from a long line of butchers, and her grandfather was a chef. Her background greatly influenced her love for creating recipes and sharing food with her family. This passion led her to culinary school, $100,000 in debt and the "skills" to break down whole animals and cook their meat; none of which serves her much purpose today.
Since Bai was a young teen, she suffered from horrific female symptoms from heavy bleeding, to cramping, to sharp abdominal pains. Later in life, after many tests and prescriptions, she discovered she had endometriosis. Through her own research and switching to a plant-based diet, Chef Bai was able to cure herself and live a normal life, free of endometriosis symptoms!

Chris Peed grew up hunting and fishing in Ohio and, by the time he was 12, he was able to use his own firearm after completing a hunter's safety course.
In this episode, Chris shares some of the common "past-times" and "sports" that he grew up participating in as a young boy. Like many children, he had been taught that certain animals were put on Earth for him to kill, and others for him to love. But, years later, after a life-changing phone call from his wife, Chris' world had completely changed.

Dr. Bo Bennett has a PhD in social psychology, and a special interest in logic, reason and critical thinking. He is also the author of "Eat Meat... or Don't: Considering the Moral Arguments For and Against Eating Meat". And, while sharing common ground in many areas with vegans and vegetarians, he can be best described as “flexitarian” who strongly believes that encouraging people to eat less meat is will have the greatest impact on overall meat consumption.
To celebrate this 200th episode milestone, I figured a debate-style podcast would be fun. In this episode, Dr. Bo and I discuss some of those common beliefs and have mild banter over those we have differing opinions on.

Clare Mann is an organisational psychologist, existential psychotherapist and author of numerous books and training programs. She is an expert in communication, human behavior and Vystopia (the existential crisis experienced by vegans, arising out of an awareness of the trance-like collusion with a dystopian world).
In this episode, Clare introduces her new book, "Myths of Choice" (why people won't change and what you can do about it), which goes into the psychology of why it's hard to convince people to change their ways. Clare also offers tips on how to be a more effective communicator when speaking to others about veganism or other belief systems that challenge some of the most normalized thought patterns.

Jim Greenbaum has been interested in resolving injustices that exist in our society since he was a child in Louisiana. When he was a young adult, he had the idea of combating some of these issues legally, by attending law school. At the last minute, Jim decided to switch to a business major, with the idea that he could make a larger impact that way.
Thankfully, Jim was far from wrong. After a few "practice" attempts at business, Jim was able to reach a goal to help support organizations dealing with human rights, and later added a focus on animal rights.
Today, Jim has successfully supported numerous organizations, including Animal Equality, Earthling Ed, The Humane League, The Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine, as well as documentaries such as Game Changers, What the Health and Cowspiracy (to name a few)!

This episodes contains language and content not suitable for children. In this episode, I've done a bit of self-reflecting (What? No guest??... NOPE). What is this thing called life, and what's my purpose here? How do we heal from past traumas and use them for the best today?
If you're looking to the answers to those questions, you won't find them here.. you'll just find me pondering the thoughts in my head. Hopefully I can at least help you feel like you're not alone if you are thinking the same thing. Love you guys!

Beata grew up in Communist Poland where meat was rationed and people were looking for alternative ways to get it. She tells the story of childhood experiences where her family would slaughter pigs in their own backyard to get around the mandatory rations. Today, Beata is a mother, a vegan, and an advocate for plant-based cooking and eating! In this podcast, she also shares how she cured her daughter of what seemed like an incurable respiratory disease, by switching her to a plant-based diet.
Beata is also offering a free online training for those interested in switching to a vegan lifestyle, but there's only 10 spots available!
