CVQO is an education charity, accredited by Edexcel, City & Guilds and the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), that provides life-changing opportunities to young people and adult volunteers to improve their prospects in education and work through internationally recognised vocational qualifications. CVQO delivers a range of qualifications and encourages learners from all backgrounds and abilities including those with learning difficulties, special educational needs or physical disability. We are committed to giving more people equal access to better opportunities in life.
A group of Schools Partnership Project students from TPS and Bohunt School in Hampshire visited Petersfield Hospital in early December to spend time with residents and help them decorate a ward, helping get them into the festive spirit. We talked to some of the students, along with Ginny Green, a senior teacher at the school.

51 Sea Cadets from 14 units across the London area celebrated receiving BTEC Level 1 qualifications in Teamwork, Personal Skills and Citizenship at a special ceremony held at HMS President near Tower Bridge. The qualifications were funded by the generosity of the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers.

The 2016 Duke of Westminster Award selection event took place at Outposts in Somerset on 5-8 April. We caught up with CVQO chief executive Guy Horridge and a selection of the 27 cadets as they excitedly got to grips with the challenges ahead.

CVQO is proud to announce the outstanding achievements of Mid Shipman Lloyd Glanville, 19, from Hull, who was named today as the winner of the educational charity’s prestigious Duke of Westminster Award. At the ceremony and luncheon at the Ironmongers’ Hall in London, Lloyd was presented with the Duke of Westminster Award by Admiral the Right Honourable the Lord West of Spithead for his commitment to his time as a member of the air cadets, and to his community.

After an initial 300 nominations, 21 finalists were chosen to take part in a gruelling 36-hour selection event run in partnership with outdoor adventure specialists Outposts, based in the Quantock Hills, Somerset. The prestigious competition is organised by CVQO and sponsored by the organisation’s patron, the Duke of Westminster. Not only are the hopefuls competing for the highest accolade of being named winner, but also for a place as one of the top nine learners to participate in a three week expedition to South Africa.
The event will test communication, teamwork and leadership skills through a variety of demanding physical and mental tasks. This year, 250 entrants were nominated for the award. These are young people who possess a wide range of skills and abilities and have overcome personal challenges, as well as demonstrating a consistently high level of commitment to their communities and their peers. In addition, the activities undertaken during the challenge will meet the criteria for each candidate to achieve a Level 3 Award in Leadership from the Institute of Leadership and Management.

The highly popular CVQO-led BTEC Music Diploma is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring musicians to gain and internationally recognised qualifications, for free, through their cadet activities. The government has recently made some significant changes to the way it measures the value of vocational qualifications. Historically the relative value of a vocational qualification – such as the Edexcel BTEC Diploma offered by CVQO – was measured by an equivalency to GCSEs. Following the Wolf Report (Prof Alison Wolf, 2011) hundreds of vocational qualifications had their GCSE equivalence changed and some had them removed altogether. The result is that some people have wrongly assumed that because certain BTECs no longer have the same GCSE equivalence that they are worth less to the learner. Edward Woods, chief executive, discusses how the CVQO-led Edexcel BTEC qualifications stand as a valued qualification in their own right, how they are recognised by employers as being valuable for many roles and in some cases they are the primary qualification for entry to some industries.
