Presented by SESCO Group Insurance | Dillon and Reece are joined by new Bearcat Boys Varsity Head Coach Julius Gallishaw to talk hoops as the season nears. They being with a look at Coach Gallishaw’s basketball journey to Virginia High School; from playing at Hillcrest (SC) with future NBA great Ray Allen, coming to Bristol to play in the ‘92 Arby’s Classic, moving on to have a record-setting career at Virginia Intermont, and beginning his coaching journey at VI, King University, and Tennessee High (1:18 - 12:09). They then pivot to the Virginia High job; the toughest part of taking over during a pandemic, the tradition and history of Bearcat Basketball, the new coaching staff, style of play he wants to implement, how the first week of practice has went with protocols in place, and players to watch + team strengths (12:10 - 28:21). Coach Gallishaw fields questions in “Get to Know Gallishaw” including: superstitions, practice style, overused phrases, and the College/NBA coach he would want to talk to. Coach names his favorite things; from his favorite inspirational quote, to NBA player and Christmas movie (28:22 - 44:18). The group then talks about embarrassing pandemic binge-shows, what Coach Gallishaw’s coaching “look” will include, and the awkwardness of playing road games in front of only opposing fans (44:19 - 50:36). They start with a focus on safety mitigations regarding COVID-19, then pivot to more-specific plans for home and away games including attendance policies, transportation, scheduling, and plans for VHS cheerleading (1:18 - 27:17). Changes to Bearcat Radio Network, including the partnership of Virginia High School with the NFHS Network; what that means for fans in 2020 and the future, and how to subscribe (27:18 - 44:10). They then detail the VHSL’s Championship +1 Format, how it affects the playoffs, and contest limits for all sports in 2021 (44:11 - 51:23).
