In a recent report, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) flagged a deeply
concerning trend, revealing that thousands of sexual violence incidents are occurring within the
country's schools. According to data compiled by the commission, more than 26,800 cases of
sexual abuse were officially recorded in just a single year. The SAHRC pointed to a widespread
lack of strict vetting procedures for school personnel as one of the primary contributing factors
driving this crisis.
The report specifically highlights a dangerous regulatory loophole regarding non-teaching staff.
Individuals working closely with students—including sports coaches, facilitators, classroom
assistants, and participants in youth employment schemes—do not fall uniformly under standard
educator regulatory structures. Consequently, many of these employees are not subjected to the
same rigorous background checks as qualified teachers.
This oversight creates a severe safety risk, meaning that individuals are granted direct access to
children without first being formally screened against criminal registries or sex offender records.

Anti-immigrant protesters were on the streets across South Africa today after their deadline for
undocumented foreigners to leave the country expired at midnight. Despite the tense
anticipation, police across the country reported by first light that they had not yet recorded any
major incidents linked to the planned action.
The looming threat has already sparked a massive displacement crisis. More than 25,000
foreigners have been bussed out of the country, while thousands more have fled their homes to
seek safety. These individuals are currently taking refuge in repatriation centres, consulates, and
makeshift camps.
In response to the crisis, the state has deployed thousands of police officers and soldiers
nationwide to prevent the protests from turning violent. This security operation has already cost
R600 million and counting. The massive deployment aims to avoid a repeat of the devastating
2008 xenophobic attacks, during which mobs torched homes, looted shops, and killed 62
people, sending tens of thousands fleeing for their lives.

Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela has called on African universities to fundamentally rethink inclusion. Speaking at the 3rd Edition of the Times Higher Education
(THE) Africa Universities Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, Manamela stressed that disability must be
treated as a central design principle rather than an afterthought, noting that current participation
rates highlight the scale of exclusion across the sector.
To illustrate the problem, the Minister pointed to recent data from South Africa, where students
living with disabilities accounted for just 1.3% of public university enrolments in 2023, and
roughly 1% across the broader post-school education and training system. “These are not
figures of inclusion at scale. They are signs of how much work remains to be done,” Manamela
said.
He further argued that meaningful inclusion requires systemic change that extends far beyond
initial admissions. The problem lies heavily within institutional infrastructure and how universities
are operated, meaning true progress will require restructuring the very way these institutions are
built and run.

The South African government is stepping up its efforts to tackle the country’s pressing water
and sanitation crisis, backed by a massive financial commitment. During the current financial
year, the Department of Water and Sanitation has allocated R12.3 billion in infrastructure grants
directly to municipalities. Delivering her budget vote speech in the National Council of Provinces
(NCOP) on Wednesday, Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina emphasized that the

government is actively rolling out decisive interventions. These measures aim to improve overall
water security, rehabilitate rapidly ageing infrastructure, and expand access to reliable water and
sanitation services across all nine provinces.
Despite these heavily funded initiatives, Minister Majodina openly acknowledged the harsh
realities still facing many citizens on the ground. She noted that numerous communities continue
to endure frequent water interruptions, highly disruptive sewage spillages, deteriorating
wastewater treatment systems, and severe levels of water losses.
Recognizing the urgency of these systemic failures, President Cyril Ramaphosa previously took
direct action by establishing the National Water Crisis Committee. Under his directive, the
committee is tasked with overseeing the swift and thorough implementation of the National
Water Action Plan to restore stability to the nation's water supply.

For the first time in South Africa’s democratic history, a parliamentary committee established to consider impeaching a sitting president has convened today. However, the 31-member committee will focus on just one initial order of business for its inaugural meeting: electing a chairperson. This historic committee was formed a week ago following a landmark Constitutional Court ruling in May, which compelled Parliament to take formal steps to consider misconduct allegations against President Cyril Ramaphosa. Despite the President applying for a judicial review of the underlying report last week, Parliament is moving forward. In multi-party democracies, political party financing is usually discussed in terms of public funding or corporate donations. However, one of the most lucrative, internal, and tightly guarded financial mechanisms is the Party Salary Contribution (commonly referred to as a "party levy" or "political tithe"). When an individual becomes a Member of Parliament (MP), a provincial legislator, or a local counselor, they are technically public servants paid by the taxpayer. Yet, many political parties mandate that these representatives surrender a fixed percentage of their state-issued salaries back to the party's central coffers. Members paid R40 billion for medical expenses not covered by their medical schemes in 2023. Even though sex is a basic human need (even a human right in the Netherlands), it can be one of the overlooked needs for people living with disabilities. Talking openly about sex, sexuality, sexual desire and sexual identity, as well as navigating sexual relations and reproductive rights and contraception, is awkward enough for many people. Add to this the burden of South Africa’s hangover of a Calvinistic apartheid past where the Immorality Act policed sexual relations. On top of this is the harsh reality of being a person living with a disability in an ableist world. There are even more complexities, and experiences of exclusion, when the person with a disability is queer identified, and/or gender non-conforming, or transgender. The decline in trust for liberation parties in SADAC is quite evident; one example that's close to home is the ANC, but today we take a look at why swapo in particular no longer resonates with the people of Namibia. In Namibia, this warning was evident in the 2019 elections, when sections of Swapo’s support dwindled at national, presidential, regional and local levels. It seems as though the liberation mantra that “Swapo is the people, and the people are Swapo” no longer resonates with the majority of voters. Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has projected that seven provinces will not be able to afford their budgets in the 2027/28 financial year. The Municipal Worker’s Retirement Fund (MWRF) has raised alarms about municipalities failing to make pension contributions for permanent employees, which could jeopardize their benefits under the upcoming retirement fund changes. Workers are worried they might not qualify for claims due to their employers' non-compliance. MWRF's Principal Officer, Themba Mfeka, stated that the fund has been pursuing legal action against several defaulting municipalities since 2007, including those in Free State and Northern Cape, to recover owed contributions.
