Unconventional Ministry is SAT-7’s weekly podcast inviting ministry leaders to share the unique and unexpected ways that the Holy Spirit turns people’s lives right-side up.
Ever wonder if your church truly knows the stories behind the global workers the church sends out? For years, many churches have relied on bulletin boards, printed photos, and prayer cards in forgotten corner and narrow hallway to share updates. In a world where people expect information to be immediate, interactive, and accessible, static displays struggle to keep the church informed.
In this episode, host Dennis Wiens visits with Paul Douglas who shares about the interactive technology of Mission Display. This interactive technology uses touchscreen display that offers missionary profiles, videos, prayer requests, websites, and QR codes that make it easy to engage in real time. This turns mission awareness from a passive glance into an active experience.
Listen to this episode to learn the following:
This is essential listening for pastors, missions leaders, and church tech enthusiasts eager to harness technology for meaningful ministry impact. If your goal is to energize your congregation around missions and foster authentic global partnerships, this episode shows you how to leap into the future of church communication. Welcome to the Unconventional Ministry Podcast, hosted by Dennis Wiens, where we explore innovative approaches to sharing the Gospel. In this episode, Dennis interviews Todd Michaels, the founder of the Story Stewardship Initiative. Todd makes a bold claim: that over 95% of believers will take their stories to the grave. He calls this “the greatest missed Kingdom opportunity of our time.” In a church culture saturated with sermons, promotions, and devotionals, he points to the quiet absence of something essential, the stories of ordinary believers, bearing witness to the extraordinary grace of God.
This episode challenges leaders to move beyond content creation to story cultivation, intentionally creating space where testimonies are not only celebrated but also stewarded. Through presence, prayer, and practice, Todd invites churches to equip believers to share their stories vulnerably and authentically, captured on video and shared online for Kingdom impact.
This conversation will awaken a new vision: a church where no story of God’s grace is wasted and every testimony becomes a tool for spiritual formation, community building, and digital outreach.

In this episode, learn about the war being waged on our children. They are being negatively influenced in school, at home, and on the internet. This is especially true of the 1,200,000 million military children of active-duty members worldwide and the nearly 2 million “total-force dependent children.” Military children struggle with 3 things: depression, loneliness, and bullying.
My guest is Mitchell Aguirre, the founder of a unique approach to changing these statistics. Mitch founded the Keeping Kids Connected ministry as the nonprofit arm of Adventures Of, his for-profit company that helps adults stay connected to kids long-distance.
Their initial campaign is targeting 840,000 military kids between the ages of 3 – 11. They use personalized and customized adventure stories where a child and parent become the main characters. Instead of the child receiving a complete book at one time, they receive one chapter every three weeks for an entire year.
The Christian-themed stories teach kids godly principles and lessons while experiencing adventures, challenges, and fun. This brings them closer to their parent and Jesus Christ.

This ministry helps bring missionary engagement in the local church into the 21st century by using touchscreen technology that allows church members to interact with the information, and access emails, websites, videos, QR codes, and more, all at their fingertips in real-time.
For far too long, an overwhelming number of church congregants were unable to identify the missionaries they support, let alone know their names and missions. To transform this disheartening reality, Paul Douglas explains his interactive touchscreen display that features world and continental maps, allowing church members to easily access information on their supported missionaries with just the touch of a finger. Through this innovative approach, they aim to cultivate deeper connections and foster a greater understanding of the church’s global missions.

In this episode, author and professor Josh NcNall talks about his 10-year-old daughter’s struggle. Although they experienced a recent death in the family that caused sadness, Jesus’ death was called "good news." During their devotions one evening, she asked her dad, “How does Jesus save us by dying on the cross?” It was not a simple and straightforward answer.
While atonement is a central theme of Christianity, the ensuing question “How?” demands attention. How does a brutal and shameful crucifixion provide salvation?
Josh was prompted to write about atonement theology – how God reconciles us to Himself through Christ’s atoning death and resurrection, yet in a way everyone can understand. The book is called “Jesus Saves Us” and is available where books are sold.

The second wave of relief needed is for PTSD, panic attacks, anxiety, and depression, when people ask existential questions like “Where is God?” or “Does He care?” “What happened to my friend who died?” “What happens to me if I die?”

In the United States, there’s about one optometrist for every 8,000 people. However, in many developing nations, there can be as few as one optometrist for every 1 million people, making it difficult to screen and provide eyeglasses for those who need them.

In this episode, hear how to captivate hearts, minds, and imaginations with the "adventure" that life with God is meant to be! A look at a refreshing return to an unapologetically sacred, historical, and Jesus-focused ministry. My guest is Derrick Steele, author, screenwriter, pastor, and founder of The Warriors Path ministry.
While there are many obstacles and distractions in our modern culture and society, there is importance in creating a convergence between a man's religious thinking and his often disconnected desire to live a meaningful, significant, and heroic (Christian) life.
One of the central themes of The Warriors Path is the deep significance we attach to our relationships and the conviction we hold firmly to: that having “fellowship,” or people to walk with through life’s adventures, is a huge portion of life’s joy – and a sadly missing ingredient in most of our modern western lives.
In this episode, learn why Deafness is more than just hearing loss, it is a unique culture, a rich language, and 70 million people globally! While 90% of the deaf are born to hearing parents, about 85% of those parents choose not to learn sign language or to sign with their deaf children. Why is that? Ron Myers, CEO of DOOR International, the largest Christian ministry focused on seeing Deaf people reached with the gospel, joins the Unconventional Ministry Podcast to explain.
Deaf people, even those who grow up in Christian homes, can be so close to the gospel and yet so far from it. Those of us in the hearing world tend to think of deafness as a disability but many deaf do not regard their deafness as a physical handicap. It is simply how they are and is a distinction they live with.
DOOR International‘s goal is that 50% of the world’s 70 million Deaf will have access to God’s Word in their heart language and a Deaf-led sustainable church planting movement among their own people group by the year 2025. Rob shares how close they really are to their goal!
Learn practical ways you can advocate for the deaf as well as help DOOR International reach its 50% sustainable church planting movement goal. check out the FACTS.

In this episode, you will learn about a unique and interactive app that will revolutionize your family's devotions while disciplining the family. My guest is Ben Myers, founder of the ActorsBible app.
One hundred years ago, it was the norm for dads to wake up early to meet with God and have something called "family worship." This was time spent together praying and singing a worship song to God, followed by the reading of a portion from the Bible and a brief discussion about the text. Sadly, this does not happen in most homes today.
The role fathers play in the spiritual formation of their children is at the core of this exciting new tool to help fathers play their part in family discipleship.

In this episode, my guest Tara Rye (https://www.cultivatinghearts.org/) shares about her "story-centric discipleship" approach. She discusses the importance of communicating the message of Christ to people in ways that make sense to them – instead of in ways that make sense to us.
According to Lausanne, the world is made up of 80% of oral learners or oral-preference learners. The majority of the people groups around the world comprise oral learners of people who can’t, don’t, or won’t read due to cultural tradition, illiteracy, or physical limitations.
This represents one-third of the world who cannot read the language they speak. Another third of the world chooses to learn through non-written methods.
Tara has discovered that if she can help build story recall, it builds story confidence that causes people to share the Word of God. Tara ask questions about the people group to determine their preferred access to learning and then uses that as a tool to help them recall stories of the Bible. Once they have established a simple method for story recall, Tara trains them on how to dig deep into the Word of God by asking questions that cause the people to discover the truth for themselves. https://audioscripture.org/
Could the story-centric discipleship approach work in your church? Please add your comments and let us know your thoughts.
In this episode, Pastor Austin Wofford shares why he believes that American Christianity is in the midst of a precipitous fall. Millennials and Gen Z are feeling the ache of loneliness and long to belong. They are also exiting the American church at such a dramatic clip that the fundamental spiritual fabric of our country will be eroded over the next thirty years.
From the recent Pinetops Foundation research on the great opportunity, they show that if the trend continues, more than 1 million youth in the American Church today will choose to leave each year for the next three decades! Between 20 to 40,000,000 youth, raised in families that call themselves Christians, are projected to no longer claim Christ by the year 2050.
For so long, the Church has thought the way to reach the next generation is through making church “cool” again – leaning into perfectly curated livestream experiences, engaging social media posts, and the latest trends – but really, the only way the Church is going to garner this generation’s trust and attention before it’s lost to what the world has to offer is through giving these individuals what the larger world can’t: genuine community.
Austin Wofford explains a new way to do church in his new book Forged: Communities of Renewal for the 21st Century. It is available for purchase here.
In this episode, Unconventional Ministry guest Ray Heinen shares his perspective on the role of technology and digital media in the Middle East and North Africa. Ray shares how teaching theology through technology, even in areas of hostile environments and very limited access, makes it possible for individuals to grow in their journey of faith.
For many believers in the Middle East and North Africa, SAT-7 is their sole connection to other Christians. Their countries are closed to the Gospel and they face persecution because of their faith. SAT-7's Bible teaching, worship, talk shows, and other programs are helping Christians feel connected and grow in their faith. https://www.sat7usa.org/
In this episode, SAT-7’s Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Joe Willey, shares what gets him most excited about the SAT-7 ministry. Pastor Mark has written his story in a book called Forgiving the Nightmare, a story of how God’s abounding grace transformed him to set him free from a nightmare of abuse and years of suffering.
Abuse, neglect, and adversity is everywhere in our culture. Many are searching for the answer to how to forgive when you’ve been wounded deeply. In order to be healthy, one must heal from the hurts of the past, but how does one deal with unforgiveness from deep trauma such as Mark experienced through child-abuse? In this episode, my guest Dr. Ron Johnson discusses the topic "Practicing a Customer Service Mentality in an Unfriendly World."
Customer relations is the company-wide process of nurturing positive relationships with customers. Every action taken by every person in the business or ministry contributes to or detracts from a positive customer relationship.
Dr. Johnson is the author of the book Customer Service and the Imitation of Christ. Millions of people all over the world work in customer service call centers, often in high-pressure situations. With over 22 years' experience working in call centers, Dr. Johnson learned a number of things about serving Christ in this environment. He has learned how to stay in touch with God while serving others; how to have compassion for those he serves, even when they're angry; how to deal with deadlines and quotas that may not be realistic; how to deal with language barriers; how to rest while working; and how to view his job as part of the larger story of God's activity in all of life. Most of all, he has learned that customer service is an unconventional ministry that's sorely needed in our world.

However, most of the time, we tend to think of leadership as power, influence, or an ability to motivate.
Dr. Armato is an author, leadership strategist, executive coach, an adjunct professor and a speaker. Some resources Dr. Armato offers are at https://www.ethoscoe.com/
Dr. Armato's book The Discipline of Consistency in a World of Compromise - 10 Pillars of Consistent-Centric Leadership was published in 2021. In addition, Frank is active in his church and in the leadership of various ministries.

You will learn about his extensive research at the site of the well-known Council of Nicea. The place where over 300 leaders of the early church met with the emperor Constantine, culminating in the confessional statement known as the Nicene Creed.
Dr. Mark Fairchild's website https://www.ancientbiblicalworld.com/about-mark-r-fairchild/
Dr. Mark Fairchild, a world-renowned archaeologist, explains the chronology of the Apostle Paul’s time after the Damascus road experience and before his three missionary journeys. Was there an earlier missionary journey?
After Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus, his life was imperiled, and he fled to his hometown of Tarsus. There, for the next seven to nine years, the apostle began to share his new faith with people in communities throughout Syria and Cilicia. This early mission of Paul’s was never mentioned in the book of Acts, yet it was here that Paul learned and developed a ministry to non-Jewish people (the Gentiles). Where did Paul go and how did he approach the task?
Since joining the faculty at Huntington University, Dr. Fairchild has made numerous academic contributions to biblical research. A two-hour documentary film entitled “The Last Apostle” followed Fairchild on his travels as he retraced the course of Paul’s journeys through Cyprus and Anatolia.
