This episode is another shoot report, this time for the National Field Archery Society 3D championships, held over the last May bank holiday. This was a 2 day competition, shooting different courses each day, comprising of 36 3D targets.

This episode is another shoot report thus time it's for Duvelle Bowman, for NFAS competition which they hosted a couple of weeks ago.
Overall it was a really good day, with some fantastic weather and good company. The course was 40 targets and all but 2 were 3Ds.
With some very cleverly set shots which I go into in the episode I’m going to try to record a YouTube video for this podcast too as I captured lots of photos. I also discuss the new rule NFAS has brought in for children under 2 and how banning them impacts archery parents.

In this episode I am trying something a little different and recording it as a video. Don’t worry I’m behind the camera.
I’m talking about the different finger tabs and shooting gloves you can come across in traditional archery.
I’ve had a couple of questions recently about the differences between tabs and gloves when running some coaching sessions so thought this would be a good way of showing the differences.
I know that some people prefer a glove, while others prefer a shooting tab. At the end of the day it’s what works for you and you are allowed. I’ve used both and tend to lean towards using a custom tab over a glove.
I also offer a quick tip on improving the fit of your shooting glove by adding some velcro to the wrist strap.

Over Easter I was in Wales staying with my family and I managed to record this episode whilst sat outside in the garden, trying out the new Lavaller microphones I mentioned on Instagram a few days ago. The topic of the session is feedback and what I can feedblocks, The points in your shot sequence where you have the opportunity to stop before you make a mistake or error in judgement.
Whether you are an instinctive archer or a process based shooter you need to have points in your draw and shooting sequence where you can take a moment and decide whether you should or should not be moving forward to the next step.
Just because you draw up does not mean you have to shoot.

I managed to record this episode on holiday in Wales as I wanted to touch on a recent coaching experience and how I was helping a couple of archers out. In just over a week there is the AGM for the National Field Archery Society here in the UK. It’s the opportunity for people to contribute to the society and even if you can’tphysically get to the meeting you can join via zoom link if you contact the general secretary in advance (general.secretary@nfas.net).

I try to adapt the don’t be that guy that he is made famous to a “Be that guy”
Be the guy who offers to help or tries to help, offers a friendly ear or non-judgemental viewpoint.
Be the person at the club who spots a target face needs replacing and rather than just tell someone else or complains about it, but the person who grabs a load of faces and goes out and replaces them.
I use the phrase don’t be a Panda i.e. someone who Eats, shoots and leaves.

A few weeks ago there was the National Field Archery Society 3D championships, it also marked the 50th anniversary of the society formation.
In this episode I’m going to give my view of how it went. For those of you who aren’t familiar with these styles of events, it’s 2 days of shooting, with over 600 archers and 4 courses of 40 3D targets of all shapes, sizes and distances.
It was in my view a great success and huge thanks to all involved.

Episode 72 – Target boss options
This episode is in response to listeners questions I have had recently about what sort of target boss they should buy for shooting at home and for practice. I’m not going to go into details about the risk assessing your garden as to whether it is safe to shoot or not. What I am going to do is provide a breakdown on two types of targets, bag bosses and layered foam bosses. Why you need to be careful and consider which is most suitable for you depending on the type of bow and poundage you are shooting. I will provide a view as to the merits and flaws of each.

We don’t always get things right; we are human and make mistakes.With modern media like Instagram, TikToK etc we tend to only see the perfect groupings or perfect shots. This is the main topic of this episode where Idiscuss that it’s important for people to realise things can go wrong and to remember “Mistakes are only mistakes if we don’t learn from them”.
You shouldn't dwell on your mistakes but learn from them. This is far easier to say than do, but it is worth trying.

So, seasons greetings to all and best wishes for the new year. Something a little different in this episode. I ran a series of coaching sessions on Sunday and in the gaps before or after each, I decided to try and record some thoughts and observations. I hope it gives a bit of an insight into the sort of things I get up to when it comes to coaching and activities down at the archery wood, like searching for wayward arrows.
It starts with a bit of me waffling on over sound of car engine and some of the recordings are made on my phone whilst in the car or walking round the wood, whilst others are at home, so sorry for the change in audio quality. I’m no expert at mixing things together, but I hope it gives you a bit of an authentic insight into the life of a field archery coach.

Archery is proving more and more popular in films and other media like, Hunger games, Brave, Avengers films, new Hawkeye series, Arrow series
But this portrayal is not always accurate when it comes to actual practical shooting or coaching. This can then have an impact on what new archery students expect to be able to do or what is correct form.

Welcome to episode 24 from Off the Arrow Shelf. In this podcast episode I want to say a huge thanks to those who have provided support and encouragement over the past few months with respect to producing these podcasts. Whether it is via a Facebook message, email or chat I appreciate it all, especially in the recent months when I haven’t been feeling 100% in myself.

Yes, it is, indeed part three of me trying to explain how I make wooden arrows and, in this episode I try to explain how I tune the arrows in. This is the last of the wooden arrow making trilogy and I really hope it has been of use.

A good thing to buy is a grain scale to weigh you arrow components, I use a digital grain scale.
Top tip to remember your arrows are a disposable asset so accept they are disposable asset, they will wear out, break or get lost.

In this podcast I am going to introduce the concept of the Archers Triangle. Whether you are a target archer, hunter or field shooter. Archery can be broken down into three components, Archer, Arrow and Bow. These three need to work together successfully for the best outcome.
I have found this method of explaining archery to students very useful when coaching as they can easily identify the relationship between the three elements, whilst also useful in focusing them on specific elements as they develop.
In future podcasts I will go into each of the three elements in more depth.
SO in this episode I am going to talk about the wealth of resources out there for archers, but also the dangers of getting swamped by all the different messages and advice.
