Meanwhile another host lives in fear of the alternate version of this film that stars Emma Watson. This film does not exist and so he remains forever grateful to Ashley Benson and is checking out her latest work as a cam girl in ALONE AT NIGHT. Thirty years of Brad Pitt making everyone look ugly. For some reason we decided to cheat a bit this week and fulfill a promise to Mr. Robert Redford and complete his own 1992 double feature after SNEAKERS with him behind the camera for A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT. He also talks all throughout this film as the narrator which offends our sensibilities as podcasters soooooo we take a dump on this movie. Which is easy because it's no SNEAKERS. Neither is it INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE which we talk about for a few minutes. As well as the "NO!" gunfight in a river in the all timer TOMBSTONE. And then another host brings up POOTIE TANG.

Thirty years of a Frenchman playing an Italian discovering America. But not really. Perhaps even less impressive than the discovery of this great country is the decision to cover not one but TWO Christopher Columbus movies from the year of 1992.
Mistakes were made. Such as:
- One host continuously mistaking one Scott brother for another. This is a Ridley Scott joint, not Tony's. Sad.
- Returning guest Tangible Teddy continues to hate Italian accents.
- He also hates former guest Dave Giannini.

MO' MONEY released in 1992 so we can properly immortalize the work of a couple of the Wayans brothers as they bring us a comedy... romance... thriller... that manages to be consistently off putting no matter the genre. While we attempt to not mention the much funnier sketch comedy veteran Eddie Murphy romcom BOOMERANG that released a few weeks earlier we are also struggling to not pay too many compliments to Stacey Dash.

We got to learn a thing or two from the extremely inquisitive and aggressive Ms. Griffith in this fish out of water detective story. One in which the ignorant barks out a lot of orders and is the hero for aggressively insulting the entire basis for the lives of others.
As podcasters we understood the hero's journey that Melanie was on and we applaud her efforts. The movie... not so much.

Two things we love in life are horses and shirtless men. We also love Scarlett Johansson but NOT the underage version we find in THE HORSE WHISPERER. This is something Sam Rockwell needed to hear again twenty-two years ago as his little indie film LAWN DOGS went up yet another western epic from Robert Redford. And since Mr. Rockwell is presumably one of the many listeners we have let this episode be a gentle reminder of appropriate relationships between a simple landscaper and a young misanthrope. We also did not care for the hair of Kristen Scott Thomas. But she probably doesn't listen. Enjoy!

For Earth Day we got back in touch with nature by not leaving the house and watching a double feature of DisneyNature's MONKEY KINGDOM and Tippi Hedren's costly mistake ROAR. Five years ago we had no desire to run around with ugly and elitist monkeys, nor did we want to wrestle with lions and tigers... and even with the world shut down, we still don't. Twenty-five years ago on January 28, 1994 the world got not one but two noir thrillers. Our forgotten film RED ROCK WEST that opened on one screen to $11k starring Nicolas Cage doing one-armed pushups on the side of a desert highway... and the mainstream hit BLINK which opened to $4 million starring Madeline Stowe as a blind woman WISHING that she could see Cage in all his shirtless glory. Unfortunately she could not and this thriller features a whole lot of mansplaining as she tries to identify a serial killer stalking her which ends up being a lot less fun than seeing Nicolas Cage's honest(ish) everyman put through the ringer in an attempt for gas money. On December 4, 1998 the world was exposed to the great pipes of LITTLE VOICE and the sound of one man's passionate solo love in Gus Van Sant's remake of PSYCHO. Our mainstream release starring Vince Vaughn as the classic Norman Bates character was reviled upon release, and while we may not surprise you with our focus on the sound design of this film (for when do we not spend ten minutes talking about that when it comes to cinema?) we may with a bit of a defense for this experiment. In a modern retelling of Charles Dickens' GREAT EXPECTATIONS, Anne Bancroft takes out her heartbreak on two children who will grow up to be Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke, while the world's greatest detective in ZERO EFFECT mainly just annoys his partner, much to our amusement. Maybe its being forced to read the novel in high school but we obviously lean towards the more comedic study of detachment as presented by Bill Pullman and Ben Stiller in Jake Kasdan's forgotten gem, but then again there may be something to The Florida Cinematic Universe starring Chris Cooper. One year ago on January 20th, 2017 the world welcomed two beasts. One was a bald James McAvoy unable to live up to his promise of hair regrowth in M. Night Shyamalan's box-office hit SPLIT, and the other was a giant turtle that is a bit clingy but does like to get down with humans in Studio Ghibli's THE RED TURTLE. Our film programmer Mike attempts to lure out yet another beast, The Nasty Hellcat, from co-host Jared but alas he actually enjoyed himself this week so that is the world's loss. While talking about various identities in film, including a nod to the great GONE GIRL, we also talk about the different identities audiences bring to films of differing expectations. Which is basically just an excuse to bring up yet again why STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI is the biggest box-office hit to ever explain the concept of "why we can't have nice things." Desiree Akhavan's Brooklyn based comedy on a bisexual Persian American woman's attempts to recover from a breakup and find her place. Though it is currently streaming on Amazon Prime, as you will find out... there is no stopping Paddington and his hard stare. He has taken control of the hearts and minds of Film Twitter and no Sundance darling can end this madness.

Twenty-five years ago on this day, January 8th 1993, two actors would seek Oscar glory as Al Pacino and Robert Downey Jr. saw their films SCENT OF A WOMAN and CHAPLIN go into wide release across the country. Ultimately Pacino would claim an Academy Award for his role as Lt. Col. Frank Slade and some would argue that he would become defined by this character in future roles, continuing to play bombastic and brash, much to filmgoers pleasure or dismay. For Downey Jr. he attempted to define a man already famous from his work on the silver screen in this Richard Attenborough biopic of Charlie Chaplin. Looking back we lament the loss of Robert Downey Jr. the actor slipping into his role as opposed to playing a version of himself, and wonder if we've become far too comfortable as an audience with Al Pacino playing characters who make others uncomfortable.

On December 9, 2016 two films focusing on the combustible combination of comedy and careers arrived like a lump of coal: OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY got a wide release and achieved modest box office success, while THE COMEDIAN starring Robert De Niro premiered in limited release in pursuit of Oscar glory.
