Chaotic Harmony podcast produced by Crystal Pridmore and Jonathan Seligman.
The Chaotic Harmony Podcast is created for elementary music teachers by elementary music teachers. The podcast chronicles the genesis and continued development of four music programs in Southern California by Crystal Pridmore and Jon Seligman. Each of theses educators is working in schools 5-10 miles from the US/ Mexico border in schools with high rates of poverty that had not supported music education programs for more than the previous three decades. They share the joys and challenges of teaching music in the elementary school music room.

We’ve said it before- our upper elementary students are COMPLETELY different than their lower grade counterparts. We almost have to become a completely different person when we teach 4th-6th graders. What does that look like for us? What are we working on to engage them?

This has been a busy week for us! Jon produced the CVESD VAPA Festival with a record 26 schools participating this year. We celebrated elementary bands, choirs, orchestras, Orff ensembles, theater groups, dance groups, digital arts classes, and visual art programs on all across the district. Crystal was sponsored by Save the Music to attend NAMM in Anaheim. We unpack what we learned from both events and what we'd like to see improve in future years.

In this episode, we talk with Melissa Salguero, an incredible music educator at P.S.48 Joseph R. Drake Elementary School in the South Bronx.
She has built the music program from the ground up and has raised over $200,000 for her music program. Salguero was honored as the Lincoln Center Arts Teacher of the Year in 2013. In 2014, after P.S. 48 suffered a break-in, Salguero was invited to represent the school on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." She was named the Grammy Music Educator Award Recipient in 2018.
We speak with Melissa about bringing respect into the classroom, creating a safe learning environment, and bearing the courage to teach beyond the standards to meet the students where they're at—even (and perhaps especially) when that means addressing hard topics.

One of the main themes of this year's AOSA Conference was diversity and inclusion. This is a huge topic that we are discussing honestly and imperfectly in this episode. What does diversity and inclusion look like in our classrooms, curriculum, leadership organizations, and counties? Classroom management looks different for a music teacher with hundreds of students than it does for a general ed teacher with 20-30. Sasha teaches at Richland Elementary in the San Marcos Unified School District. This week we talk about the Chula Vista Elementary School District Collaborative Concert. How we went from thinking we'd have 40 kids and family members singing together around the rug at the library to accidentally flooding the library with over 200 people, how the concert exploded to over 800 kids and family members by the following year, and how we foster a sense of collaboration over competition in our partnership together. We believe that we only make each other stronger as we build up and show off each others' strengths, and this concert has become a powerful way to showcase those strengths.

Chula Vista Elementary School District is the largest elementary school district California. 5 years ago, there were no full time music or arts teachers in the district. All of that changed when Lauren Shelton began her work in the district. In just 5 years, she has brought more than 90 full time VAPA (Visual And Performing Arts) to serve the children in CVESD. In this episode, you will learn what led to the decision by CVESD to hire VAPA teachers. We get to learn a little about Lauren's upbringing, her strategy in building the VAPA program in the district, and get to hear the struggles and victories that she went through in the building process.
