"What goes around comes around!" and..."Children should be seen and not heard." Ever used these sayings? Of course you have! But have you ever wondered where they originated from and what they really mean? Find out with Delia every Wednesday at 9am GMT. Also broadcasted on the award-winning Colourful Radio.
This week’s metaphor has a great guest and an extremely strong script by Laurie Woplington!
We will be looking at a famous phrase from George Orwell’s novel 1984. Banned at various times for being too left-wing and too right-wing, it critiqued and shaped much of the political discourse of the 20th century, and has found a fresh, unsettling meaning in the new reality of hyper-surveillance and big data algorithms.
The odds were stacked against our guest Ray Studevent from day one. Born to a White, heroin-addicted mother and a Black, violently alcoholic father, his childhood in Washington, D.C., was a chaotic mix of substance abuse, death and neglect. Ray is a Pulitzer Prize nominated Author of Black Sheep, an unforgettable story of his struggles as a mixed-race boy as he learns to fight the ghosts of his past to find trust and love. His childhood in Washington gives him a front row seat to the metaphor, “Big Brother is watching you.”
Delia talks to Kimya Glasgow, the creator of high quality products, primarily resort wear, swimwear, soft furnishings and accessories, with a desire to have a positive impact on society. She is an active entrepreneur assisting communities in Saint Vincent, especially with start-up ventures and associations. She tells how, from an early childhood, “So you got your freedom papers,” affected how she led her life.

Delia talks to author, mentor, and writer, Vanessa Walters. Vanessa chose the phrase, “Follow the energy”, because it represents a point in her life where she felt like she could disappear. She was a new mom, working in a new country and she felt she was disconnected to her writing. She was teaching Zumba, feeling her writing was just, ‘good’. In the end, Vanessa realized that she needed to make mistakes, in order to find herself again.

"What eh miss yuh eh pass yuh"
“If it’s meant for you, it won’t pass you by.”
That’s the metaphor chosen by David Kallo, author of “Jumbie in Town”. The book explores his childhood adventures in search of characters from the rich amalgamation of Trinidad and Tobago folklore.
These childhood folk stories inspired more excitement than fear for him, but not for most of us, still scared of those notorious Jumbies!

“You can’t build a bridge during a flood”.
Not heard a metaphor like that?
It’s because it doesn’t exist. It was created by Delia’s guest, Linbert Spencer OBE, who uses it in many aspects of his life and career.
You may be familiar with similar metaphors and we’ve got them covered - bringing you stories from mixing cement in thunderstorms in Haiti to a strange phenomenon of young people sequestering themselves for years in Japan.

“The straw that broke the camel’s back!”
Kate Werran is the author of An American Uprising in Second World War England: Mutiny in the Duchy - a non-fiction book about five fateful minutes in 1943 when a Cornish market town became the centre stage to a dramatic ‘wild west’ shoot out between black and white American G.I's.
The subsequent court-martial made daily headlines in both Britain and America – to the rising alarm of Whitehall and Washington – and reveals a surprising new side to Britain, race and the real “special relationship” in World War Two. Ray 'Ben' Studevent was a mixed-race child whose unique look led him to fight a racial identity crisis his entire life. Each time he entered a room, he had to decide whether it was better to be Black or White. His personal and career journeys ebbed and flowed, taking him to prison, fatherhood and gigs in comedy clubs, modelling and stock-market research.
On this episode, Ray talks to Delia about how, being born to a White, heroin-addicted mother and a Black, violently alcoholic father affected his life. And how his latest book, “Black Sheep” dedicated to his aunt Lemell, who became his mother, showed him that although he loved and appreciated her, he regrets he didn’t show her just how much when she was alive.
