Our Rangatira for today is Eddie Hokianga. He is a NZSL Tutor/Instructor who is passionate about teaching anyone New Zealand Sign Language. He tells of its importance to learn NZSL because it is Eddies and many others only form of communication, as well as one of New Zealands official languages.

After a month of summer holidays, Teiringa and Mataatua are eager to get back into the swing of things and entertain our early Sunday mornings with Kapa Haka, our Maori stories, music, and quirky interviews amongst their peers to get an insight into the world of our tamariki. Today they caught up with one of their favourite cousins, Te Awa Marie Paul.
Today’s rangatira, Tui Rudolph hails from Ngati Hine, Te Aupouri me Te Rarawa. She has travelled, studied worked and performed in the paradise of Hawaii over the years and is now at home working with and serving our local communities. She has a strong background in Te Ao Maori and passionate about whanau and being a great role model for our next generation.
Tauwhara marae is in the heart of Waimate North near the Mission House. The wharenui is Te Rangiawhiowhio, the main hapū are Ngāti Hineira, Ngāti Rēhia, Whanautara, Te Whiu and Ngāi Tawake ki te Tuawhenua ara Ngāpuhi nui tonu. Descendants trace their ancestry to the Mataatua waka, Whakataha maunga and the Waitangi River. I spoke to descendant, Arohanui Allen regarding the expectations and work required to keep Tauwhara Marae operating during these uncertain times.

Waikāretu (Pōuto) marae is located in Te Kopuru. The primary hapū for the marae is Te Uri o Hau of Ngāti Whātua. The descendants of Waikāretu (Pōuto) marae identify Hakiputatomuri as their key tupuna.

Pākanae marae is located on the corner of State Highway 12 and Waiotemarama in South Hokianga.It belongs to the Ngāti Korokoro, Ngāti Wharara and Te Pouka hapu of the iwi Ngāpuhi.
The wharenui is named Maraeroa. Pākanae connects to the maunga Te Ramaroa a Kupe, the pā Whiria, the moana Hokianga and the waka Ngātokimatawhaorua. Todays Kaikorero, Cheryl Turner (co-chair)shares some of this history.
Situated on the North Tech site Raumanga has been a marae for all its surrounding hapu over the years and today has been beautifully refurbished combining traditional and contemporary designs and materials.

The wharehui is called Nukutawhiti. The marae takes its name from the local maunga of Te Tārai o Rāhiri. Today our kaikorero Te Ringakaha Tia Ward explains history of that area particularly the meeting place of Rahiri and his first wife Ahuaiti.

Kawiti marae, Waiomio, near Kawakawa. It was a project started by Te Tawai and Maata Kawiti of Ngāti Hine in the early 1970s. Kawiti marae rests next to their home and the facilities were opened on it in 1978–79. The wharenui is named Te Tawai Riri Maihi Kawiti as a memorial after his passing in 1981. The wharekai was later named Maata Matekino Kawiti in memory of her passing in 1999. This korero is shared by our special guest and descendant of the marae, Teina Wells - Smith.

Ngāraratunua marae is located on the corner of Pipiwai and Church roads in Ngāraratunua, Whangarei. It affiliates to the Ngāpuhi iwi and its primary hapu is Te Kahu o Torongare. It is sometimes referred to as Te Paea. Our Kaikorero Takiri and Raina Puriri assisted by Hori Keretene remember the mahi that was done by the people of the Marae and how the marae came to be as a Memorial Hall for the returned and lost Soldiers.

Today on He Pukepukerau, we revisit Otiria Marae situated in Moerewa. It is one of the last few Marae within Ngati Hine that was built out of respect and acknowledgement to the Soldiers of not only the 28th Maori Battalion, but all Soldiers who went and fought in the World Wars. The Whare Tupuna pays homage to the army as its name is derived from The God of War Tumatauenga whom our soldiers also take their name from.

Ohaki Marae is situated within the papakainga located in the centre of the rohe, Pawarenga, and established under the tupuna Wiripo. His direct descendants are the primary beneficiaries and Kaitiaki of the Marae. Our Kaikorero for Ohaki Marae today is Maraea Herbert Pickering, who remembers the words of her kaumatua "kia pono te mahi, ka tika te mahi." she also is one of the marae trustees and her love and commitment to her marae has stemmed down from her Papa to her mother and now to herself.
Parahaki marae is located in Nukutawhiti, Mangakahia. This marae belongs to the Ngāti Toki, Te Kumutu and Ngāti Whakahotu hapū of the iwi Ngapuhi. Parahaki marae is connected to the surrounding maunga and to Mangakahia River. Todays kaikorero is chairman and descendant of Parahaki Marae Anaru Kaipo who speaks of his responsibilities as chair and the roles his people play on their Marae.
Tuparehuia marae is located in Bland Bay, on a peninsula north of Whangaruru Harbour. The primary iwi is Ngāti Wai.
There is currently no wharenui on site. The wharekai is called Rangimarie. Today, Ropata Diamond shares his memories growing up here in this beautiful rohe.
Tahaawai marae is located on the upper reaches of the Whangaroa Harbour, east of the Northland township of Kaeo, off State Highway 10. It shares connection with both Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa and the Ngāpuhi confederation.
The wharenui is named Te Awaroa. Tahaawai marae is connected to the maunga named Maungaemiemi, to Pupuke River, and to Whangaroa Harbour. Todays kaikorero is Leilani Payne
Mangamuka marae is just off State Highway 1 south of the Mangamuka range. The wharenui is called Ngāpuhi (Puhi Kai Ariki, Puhi Moana Ariki, Puhi Taniwharau). Mangamuka marae connects to the nearby maunga named Maungataniwha and to the Hokianga Harbour. Our Kaikorero is Delwyn Beckham, a descendant of Mangamuka Marae who shares herexperiences growing up on Mangamuka marae.
Matauri marae, also known as Te Tāpui, is centrally located in the cliff-top papakainga overlooking the sweeping beach and pa of Mātauri Bay. The wharenui is named Ngā Puhi. Its wharekai (Te Puawaitanga) used to house the kohanga reo that was established in the 1980s. Anaru Kira remembers and shares the original name of the whare and what they used to gather in prior to there being a wharenui.
Whakapara marae is located on Puhipuhi Rd beside the Wairua River, 10 minutes drive north of Hikurangi on State Highway 1. The wharenui is Te Ihi o Nehua. Descendant of Whakapara Marae Te Raa Nehua reminices the days of yesteryear and shares enlightening korero of Whakapara and the area.
Kaikou marae is in the area known as Matawaia, on the corner of Pipiwai and Lovett Road. On the marae is the wharenui named Eparaima Makapi, which was named after a pakeha settler who loved being and living with the people within that rohe.
Te Paatu Marae is located on State Highway 1 near Pamapuria. “It takes a village to raise and educate a child to teach them tikanga on marae,” says Lisa McNab, our kaikorero on He Pukepuke Rau. Featuring compositions from te roopu o Muriwhenua.
Mōkau marae is located in the papakainga of Mōkau. The marae belongs to the Ngāti Wai confederation. In 2013, the wharenui named Huruiki was seriously destroyed by fire and the whanau and hapu of the Marae has been working hard to have it restored and re-opened. Tonights guest speaker Hepi Haika invites all to the re opening of Mokau scheduled for January 2021.
Miria marae, also known as Waiomio/ Te Rapunga Marae, is located on State Highway 1 in Waiomio ... The wharenui is Te Rapunga and the wharekai is Te Hahaunga. " We have three reasons as to how we get the name Miria." Arama Reihana: kaikorero of the week shares rich historic korero of the Waiomio area, plus an entertaining performance from Te Roopu Kapa Haka o Ngati Hine from the 2008 Taitokerau regionals.
Matihetihe Marae is a coastal marae about 10 kilometres north of the Hokianga harbour, and a similar distance south of the Whangape harbour."Kia kaua wareware tatou o te taone ki nga marae ki tua whenua" Moko Te Pania: our kaikorero for this week. Tonight on He Pukepuke Rau: Te Iringa Marae. Te Iringa Marae is located south of Kaikohe. Mane Tahere is our guest on tonight's program. Mane is a trustee of Te Iringa Marae and discusses the highlights and challenges of marae life as well as encouraging other whanau members to return home and help uplift the mana of the marae and its people. Featuring waiata and kapa haka from Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kaikohe.
Mōria marae is one of three marae in the Whirinaki area, Mōria marae is located on Whirinaki School Road out of Whirinaki. Moria is also the name of the wharenui. Associated with Ngāti Te Pou and Te Hikutu hapu Kaikorero Boyd Paratene remembers stories told to him from his elders. Moria was home of respected elder Winiata Morunga whom many of his descendants were performers of Te Puu Ao, so we are also entertained with their 2019 Te Matatini performance.
Te Rito Marae is located on Ngapipito Road in Kawiti, just west of Moerewa. Its wharenui is Te Rito. The shed to the left of the wharenui is Mau Mahara. Tonight Perry Hati explains the mahi that is done as a hapu and also that he does as the chairman and caretaker of the Marae. complimented with beautiful waiata maori.
Waihou marae, in full Waihou-nui-a-rua and also known as Waimirirangi, is located in Waihou, about 4 km south of Panguru on West Coast Road in the northern Hokianga. It's iwi is Te Rarawa, and the hapū associated with the marae include Ngati Te Reinga, Ngāti Moroki, Parewhero, Te Uri o Te Aho and Te Wae Koi. Tonight Mike Te Wake expresses the challenges and benefits as chairman of the marae and Margaret Ngaropo Hati left the big city to come home and revitalize te reo amongst the new generation of kohanga reo mokopuna within their rohe.
Ōkorihi marae is south-west of Kaikohe off State Highway 12. In 2003, a fire destroyed the historic marae. Mutunga Rameka reflects on the impact the fire had on their community and the progress its made to rebuild their marae. Featuring compositions from Nga Uri o Tuteauru.
Motukiore Marae is located in the heart of Hōreke on Motukiore Road. Our kaikōrero include Pakihana Butler about growing up with his kuia and kaumātua and Tumamao Harawira who acknowledges the ongoing efforts of those that keep the homefire burning, particularly for those who live outside te rohe o Ngāpuhi. Our kaikōrero include co-chair of the Ōtiria Marae trustees committee, Mike Butler, who reflects on the highlights and sometimes challenging aspects to marae operations. Kāretu marae is nestled in the Kāretu valley, Taumarere (Bay of Islands), near the sacred river of Taumarere, which flows from Kāretu out to Opua, Paihia and Kororāreka (Russell) in the Bay of Islands. Tau Henare marae, sometimes also referred to as Pipiwai marae, is situated in the papakainga of Pipiwai, 40 kilometres west of Kamo and Whangarei, no te hapu o Te Orewai. Len Bristowe, shares a grassroots perspective of the marae - which wouldn't be complete without a guitar in hand, to belt out a rendition of the infamous Te Orewai waiata.
