If you have struggled finding, holding or maintaining deep, safe and long lasting love in your life, you may be very surprised at the reason. It's not because you've been jinxed, the lovers you've attracted have been selfish and insensitive, or your partner no longer cares the way he or she did. It's because your brain has been mis-programmed. That's according to the vast research done by relationship counselor Dr. Gary Salyer, Ph.D. in his illuminating breakthrough new book.Yes, you do DESERVE to have a long-lasting deep love. But everyone has a love style that plays out throughout their lives, according to Salyer, an underlying subconscious approach to love. Either Secure, which leads to long-lasting, fully-embodied love; Avoidance, which causes a person to find ways not to fully commit or become deeply intimate; and lastly Anxious, in which a person creates drama from the fear that the relationship is always in jeopardy.

In this emotional memoir, Susán Hoemke divulges the heart-wrenching story of her son Hayden’s eight-year battle with drug addiction, and his tragic death at age twenty two. Through the pain of losing a child, Susán unflinchingly relates the crimes that her son’s desperation for a fix drove him to commit, and how the mental and physical impact of the drugs on his body turned her happy, creative son into a stranger in their home. The years surrounding Hayden’s death have been some of the most difficult in the family’s life, his addiction not only affecting him but all those around him. Rebuilding their home and family, and attempting to see light in the darkest days they’d ever experienced proved to be an incredibly difficult effort, but not impossible. Hoemke hopes that her family’s story will serve as a wake-up call to people everywhere about the drug epidemic across this country, and as a song of hope for those suffering through what her family has.

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, where as a child I was sexually abused by my parish priest. This abuse plunged me headfirst into drug addiction, incarceration, ruined-relationships, and homelessness. As a survivor of sexual abuse, I found my voice at 32 years old and I have gone on to be an outspoken advocate for the protection of children. I am actively involved with and support those that push for legal remedies to protect children. As a recovered addict and a survivor or sexual abuse, I’ve dedicated my life to helping those going through what I experienced and show them that abuse and addiction do not have to limit them from all of life’s joy and beauty.

Sometimes in life, things happen too fast. We barely solve one problem when two problems surface. We’re feeling great in the morning, but we’re submerged in misery by nightfall. Every day we face interruptions, delays, changes, and challenges. We face personality conflicts and disappointments. Often when we are feeling overwhelmed, we can’t see the lessons in these experiences. One simple concept can get us through the most stressful of times. It’s called gratitude. We learn to say, thank you, for these problems and feelings. Thank you for the way things are. I don’t like this experience, but thank you anyway. Force gratitude until it becomes habitual. Gratitude helps us stop trying to control outcomes. It is the key that unlocks positive energy in our life. It is the alchemy that turns problems into blessings, and the unexpected into gifts.

Today, I will be grateful. I will start the process of turning today’s pain into tomorrow’s joy.

Sometimes it seems as though there is so much wrong with the world that we might as well forget trying to make a difference. “After all,” we think, “what in the world can I do? I’m just one person.” Whether our concerns are so broad that we desire global peace or so personal that we simply want recovery made available to every addict who wants it, the task seems overwhelming. “So much work to do, so little time,” we sigh, sometimes wondering how we’ll ever do any good. The smallest contributions can make the biggest difference. To gain more from life than an ordinary, plodding existence requires very little effort on our parts. When we smile at someone who is frowning, when we let someone in front of us on the freeway, when we call a newcomer just to say we care, we enter the realm of the extraordinary. Want to change the world? Start with the person sitting next to you and then imagine your act of kindness multiplied. One person at a time, we all make a difference.

The importance of using evidence based treatment to CURE addiction and alcoholism. There is extensive research that shows that only by healing the underlying causes of addiction and alcoholism -untreated depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc. and unresolved trauma- with a combination of medication and cognitive behavioral therapy can individuals be CURED of their addiction and alcoholism yet most of the nation's rehabs aren't using evidence based treatment. This lack of evidenced based treatment is equivalent to medical malpractice and needs to be addressed so that we can save millions of lives and end homelessness.

Recovery involves change, and change means doing things differently. The problem is, many of us resist doing things differently: what we’re doing may not be working, but at least we’re familiar with it. It takes courage to step out into the unknown. How do we find that courage? Just for today: I welcome change. With the help of my Higher Power, I will find the courage to change the things I can.

In recovery, we begin to interact with the world around us, we no longer live in isolation. But freedom from isolation has its price: The more we interact with people, the more often we’ll find someone stepping on our toes or reminding us of our 'Old Behaviors'. Here is where the circumstances in which resentments are often born. Resentments, justified or not, are dangerous to our ongoing recovery. The longer we harbor resentments, the more bitter they become, eventually poisoning us. To stay clean, we must find the capacity to let go of our resentments, the capacity to forgive. Then, and only then, will we be able to embrace a clear internal calmness while dealing with life on life's terms.
