After Fabian’s bday party at Buddah, I started playing there every Saturday in summer 2004. The owners wanted me to play lounge beach house which became quite dull for me. Anyway, the bar manager, a top bloke called Tom, promoted a lot of club nights so I did him this demo of more banging upfront house stompers.

Naresh was a founding partner of Karmarama, a creative agency I helped appoint for Emap radio. Naresh is a big music fan and I still see him every year back stage at Glastonbury.

He’s into rock more than dance and over a lunch he once told me he didn’t really know much about house music... so, as a thank you for the lunch, I promised to burn him a few CDs. I picked a few mixes from the vault, but laid down this blend of 90s anthems especially.

So, Paul and I were inseparable best buddies for through ‘99-’01, so when his lovely partner, Fabian, asked me to dj at his 30th, it was a pleasure. We spent a few nights in Soho in January looking for the perfect venue and decided upon what used to Buddah Bar on Frith Street.

The party invite was a 30 minute CD, for which I spent a whole afternoon burning 100 discs. The attached mix is that invite, introduced by Fabian, who recorded his voice over in the Kiss 100 studios.

Of course, the night itself (6 March) rocked. I took my old sound system down and we turned the quiet bar into a sweat box.

After the party, the owners of the bar made me their Saturday night dj. I kept it up through the summer for the cash, but they wanted me to play more mellow lounge house music, so it got a bit boring.

Enjoy the mix.

Fabian’s birthday invite.

Uploading these old mixes, I’ve noticed that I always manage to knock out something special every February. Maybe it’s because I’ve fully recovered from the Christmas hangover. Perhaps it’s the Miami WMC on the horizon, so there’s a wad of inspiring new tunes out...

Most probably it’s because it’s Selina’s birthday, which I often forget and so have to deliver a decent mix for her - even if it’s late.

80 minutes of funky house tracks from feb ’04, with a few bootlegs and classics from the back of the box for good measure. Pure party fodder.

The ‘all over my face’ track was co-produced by a good friend and former work colleague, Jon Shaw, who is sadly no longer with us. I still play the tune out as it’s a great warm-up track, and think of him every time, Lovely, lovely fellow.

This mix is part of a trio of sessions I laid down for a trip to Ibiza in 2003. Selina & Matt, Ben & Lara, Lisa, Malcolm and myself took a villa up in the hills and had a fantastic break. I sorted out a wad of minidiscs for lazy poolside days.

From memory, and from reviewing my limited notes, this mix was actually two separate sessions. I initially recorded something in May which I guess I wasn’t very happy with - it may have been one of my late night pissed-up adventures - but liking the first few tracks (particularly the blend into Groove Armada’s My Friend) I decided to pick up the mix from half way through, adding tracks 6 > 13 in August.

Both the Aug and May sections lacked any meticulous planning. I just grabbed recent tunes that went with the laid-back mood to get some deep house faves into a mix for the holiday. It works on the whole but I’m sure the last few tracks (esp that Marvin Gaye booty) were probably just filler to use up the minidisc.

Enjoy!

Sunshine pop, disco, hip hop and few summer house classics. Easy going party vibes for beer o’clock: mid afternoon with hangover clearing, time to gear up for the night ahead...

Another daytime poolside session for our trip to Ibiza 2003. This time it’s all house tunes, but stacked with girly floorfillers and bootlegs (hence the title).

Private Eye is a bootleg of Hall & Oats’ I can’t go for that; the Coloursound tune is lost gem here in it’s original form; G Club’s Guitarra G oozes Ibiza sunshine; and with Balearic faves by A Man Called Adam and Smokebelch towards the end of the mix, you definitely know which island you’re on. Enjoy.

Another one of those sessions mixed with the decks on the floor in the hallway because we were still doing up the flat. Jill had just left the Kentish Town Massive and moved in with Nick, so it was a little house warming gift for them. I remember it blearing out at a BBQ they had that summer.

Funky house favourites from early ’03.

Produced for my bestest buddy, Selina, on her 30th birthday. There’s something about Sel that makes me want to pull out all the stops for her. This time I had to pull out the decks - Matt & I had just moved house and the building work we had done meant it was too dusty for playing vinyl.

I set up my decks on the floor in the hallway and pulled out some girly tunes I thought she’d like.

Her birthday was a great night clubbing in Brixton. We returned to her & Matty F’s flat (I seem to remember seven of us paying a dodgy cab double fare to squeeze us in??) and danced round their living room to this mix. Happy days.

Another definitive update mix, full of Bethnal Green summer vibes. I was so pleased with this pair of mixes (check out 19.2 too - slightly tougher), that I ended up burning about 50 copies for friends.

This was also a labour of love. The two mixes were put together over a couple of months, grabbing snatches of time here and there. Each track was edited on minidisc, shortened so I could get more on the CDs. This gave me the opportunity to perfect each mix and use the best take. The process of refining, purposefully without computers, meant this project took fucking forever to complete.

It was quite a few months before I did another mix. Partly because moving house left me without decks for a while, but mainly I felt I couldn’t match this one.

After this point, I produced far fewer update mixes, and they are cataloged by dates instead of numbers.

I mixed this for Billy when I couldn’t make it to his wedding. It’s collection of early 90s tunes that we played and heard out lots when we were at uni. With a few acapellas thrown in to segue the tracks, this is mixed for the living room / car, rather than the dance floor.

Summer 2001. Matt, Mikey and Paul were sharing a house in Stoke Newington. The knocked-through lounge / kitchen / conservatory and outside yard made it an excellent party house. And being not-too-far from Finsbury Park made it an excellent venue for post-Pride shenanigans.

As with all these parties, I’d rock up with my mini disc and wire together a few stereos. Here’s a mix I knocked up for the 2001 event. We open with a few funky faves before moving to a few more banging post-trance thumpers, ending with the classic Hold That Sucker Down.

I’m uploading this on a very cold February Saturday - I’ve been playing it to bring a little sunshine through my speakers and thought I should share it with you.

This mix is a collection of vocal house anthems from the 90s. I made it for a summer party at “The Gay Church” (aka Kat and Chris’ apartment in a converted vicarage). The mixing isn’t much to be proud of - from memory, I’d already spent the afternoon prior to the party laying down a couple of mixes for that evening, and threw this together while I was getting ready to leave the house, just randomly grabbing old sunny tracks I had not played for a while.

I guess it’s no surprise the the original track list has gone astray. I recognise most of the tunes anyway. Lots of happy sing-a-long stompers, some already classics at the time.

I may have already mentioned what a great flat Andie and I shared in Bethnal Green. With a large living space it was perfect for big parties, and we had a few. Best of the best were our New Year’s Eve extravaganzas.

‘2001: A Spaced Odyssey’ was the biggest headline event I can remember. Andie’s room was earth, floodlit in green, mine was Mars in red, the hallway was a docking station and the main room was space. Everyone dressed up: gay space cowboys, a whole crew of Star Trek ensigns, monsters, aliens, the lot. Clearing up the day after we filled a box with toy ray guns.

As with all the best parties, it was a joint effort. Ted designed the invite artwork, Paul, Andrew and Cuneyt dressed the venue after raiding the Paperchase post-xmas sale, I was lights and music.

When hosting at home I don’t enjoy DJing through the evening so used to pre-mix the music. This mix kicked in at midnight after Big Ben’s chimes. We start with a few commercial dance favourites from the time, before going into a wad of funky disco house anthems and old skool classics. Ii think I must have run out of time before the party because the last 20 minutes are from a Ministry Of Sound CD. Thanks also goes to Tim Stoller for lending me ‘Salsoul Nuggets’ - my fave track of that Christmas, only available as an instrumental white label at the time.

Originally mixed across 4x minidiscs, the mix appears here for the first time as one continuous session. This is the soundtrack from midnight to 5am, at which point we switched to Strangeways Days Vol 2. It’s a big file so may take some time to dload.

My fondest memory of the party was at about 8am on New Year’s Day. The sun was rising and a Spanish couple we’re dancing. I’d never met them before - friends of friends of friends - but they had just been reunited as he had been living in Spain. They twirled each other around and around gently, never losing eye contact. A beautiful moment amongst the spilt drinks, fag ends and scattered beer cans!

Chrissie is an old mate from my days at Kiss 100. Back in November 2000, she was particularly fond of a tune by Kojak that I’d blagged from one of the programming guys, so I built a mix around it for her birthday.

The session is filled out with various commercial party anthems and other big tunes from 2000. Most of these tracks also appear in the 2001 Spaced Odyssey mix for the following month’s NYE party, which is probably why I have not uploaded this before now, but this mix came first and no doubt inspired that soundtrack.

It appears I never noted the original tracklist for this mix, but all of the tracks were easy to recognise apart from No 4... I can picture the sleeve but it’s one I passed on to the charity shop long ago.

Enjoy!

This mix was laid down one hot summer afternoon for the first BBQ round at The Gay Church (Kat & Chris’ flat). They called it a BBQ, but it kind of started after dark and not much food was eaten...

Summer of 2000 was a scorcher. So many parties too. The mix is very similar to the set I played at a party in West London for one of Jane’s friends. I turned up just expecting to play for half an hour but rocked the joint for several hours. Happy Days.

Here’s a favourite for dancing around Paul’s living room. Many of the tracks here also remind me of Cuneyt, who stayed with Andie and I for a while when he split up with his ex. One Saturday evening we got trashed and danced away wearing a pair of headphones each.

The tracklist is a chunky selection of disco and filtered house anthems which I much overplayed at the time. Daddy’s Favourite is always a crowd pleaser, and the Phunkie Souls track should be one of my Desert Island selections. ‘For real’ by Bushbaby is beautifully lush. Excuse the pop tracks, it’s probably a result of working at Kiss at the time.

More summer anthems from the Bethnal Green days. Lots of Full Intention remixes here, including a retake on Frankie Knuckles’ classic Tears and Jocelyn Brown’s It’s All Good, which was an old Sunday morning favourite of Andie Tickner back in the day.

There’s also one of my early attempts at a live mash up, mixing To Be In Love over a George Morel groove. It’s not perfect but kind of works.

Enjoy!

Classic tracks from my Bethnal Green days. Every one of these tunes reminds me of that particularly messy summer when we partied every weekend. I’d rock up with my minidisc player and annoy your neighbours, and this disc was usually in the set somewhere before Sunday evening...

Mainly commercial funky house, but beware of the trance tracks at the end!

This was my first session after moving to London. I remember mixing it on a grey day in Bethnal Green, so I assume Andie Tickner and I had just taken up residence at City View House. I had just started working at Kiss 100 and was enjoying discovering London’s record shops. From memory, I think was mixed for Matt Fowler as a bit of thank you for letting me stay at theirs until I got sorted with a flat.

I debated whether to upload this mix because the mixing’s pretty ropey through the first few tracks (what was I thinking of? must have been smoking while recording...) but, given that this is meant to be a comprehensive archive, the tunes should be allowed an airing for their tenth anniversary!

In 1999 Cassisus had released his first album, Defected records were throwing us their first beautifully packaged 12”s and Van Helden hit No. 1 with udon’tknowme. Enjoy...

I remember that I’d been wanting to lay down a soul session for a while. I’d done the odd soul tape, but found RnB difficult to beat mix as the bpms can vary so much.

Anyway, I’d just started going out with John L, whose best friend was something of a soul girl. Her birthday presented the perfect opportunity to get this recorded. I did it in one evening, but it took a few hours to perfect.

Between ’99 and perhaps ’05, soul / RnB / hiphop basically became chart-topping pop pap, so I’ve never really been inspired to revisit it for a dj mix. This session is anchored in earlier 90s tunes and includes some real gems - like Rajanee’s turn it up, which is still one of my favourite Sunday morning tracks.

I can’t really remember the story behind this mix which was recorded when I lived in Chorlton, Manchester. I think I wanted to pull together a selection of the different loops and grooves and riffs that had guided my taste through the recent years. The session journeys through funky house grooves, through fat speed garage b-lines, to a handful of pre-trance up-tempo favourites.

I love the total recall track. I think it was in a box of 12s that got nicked when I was moving to London. Naline & Kane’s Beachball will always be a fave too.

Another archive session with Selina’s name in the title. At the time I was still living in Manchester and traveling to London once a week to set up a new creative team at Magic & Kiss FM. I stayed at Selina & Matt’s regularly, trying to plan my trips to coincide with weekends. This mix is one of a few that regularly accompanied up and down the M6.

I’ve no idea why it’s called Selina’s Housewerk Mix. Maybe I thought thought she’d be up and down with the Hoover to it...

Hearing this reminded me of a few forgotten treasures: Bob Sinclar’s ‘2-3-4-5-6-7-8 and back’ Gymtonic, the original Holiday/Music Sounds Better bootleg, even Madonna’s Substitute For Love remix can still raise a hair on the back of my neck. Enjoy x

I can’t remember much about this session. I recorded it to minidisc when living in Chorlton, Manchester. It’s a mix of funky house and UK garage tunes from the summer of 1998. There’s are a couple of chart tracks in the mix (Tamperer and Horney) and Mad Professor’s dub-style Teardrop at the end for some reason - a 12” I had stolen when I moved flats in London - but most of the grooves still cut the mustard.

Enjoy!

Whatever happened to UK Garage? One minute it’s The Newest Bestest Thing In Town, then suddenly we’re all listening to rock and 80s-influence electro... These days it’s back underground

UKG had its roots in the South (“it’s-a-Lon-don-thing”), but despite being based in Manchester, I was really into it. I loved the darker, grittier, harder Speed Garage tracks too. You’ll find plenty of them in this mix.

This session was recorded some time between March and September ’98. I can’t find an exact date on any of the minidiscs. It was around the time I was DJing at Via Fossa on Canal Street in Manchester, filling in for Chris Buckley. He would often lend me his records and I had first dibs on the promos he didn’t want/sell, hence I ended up with quite a wad of Speed Garage tunes.

Also, in 1998, every pop tune seemed to be released with a selection of different genre mixes (RnB, house and UKG) as record companies hedged their bets to gain a hit in any scene. This is why the likes of Robbie Williams, All Saints & Janet Jackson turn up in this tough underground mix; although you could miss them if you didn’t check the tracklist.

Running at over 100 minutes, the mix was split over two minidiscs. In transferring it to a downloadable format I’ve edited the mix together as a single piece of audio. This is the first time it has existed as one continuous mix.

Enjoy!

There’s something exciting about a new bag of unplayed vinyl. Working as a radio producer at Key and Kiss, people often chucked unwanted wax my way. This mix was laid to minidisc after being handed a wad of upfront 12s by Chris Buckley. It was probably one of the weekends I filled in for him at Via Fossa.

The session starts off with some smooth uk garage tracks, and moves into chunkier house. It was originally recorded in two parts as it didn’t fit on to a single minidisc. It is one of a few two-part mixes that I have now edited together - finally a continuous piece of audio after almost ten years.

The transfer from minidisc to audio file, including the editing and chaptering, have been completed entirely in the digital domain, which means the resulting audio is as true to the original as when I put the needle on the record. This remains true for the majority of the mixes you’ll find on these pages.

Here’s an old Manchester mixtape that was always in the car stereo. I’m a little fuzzy on when it was finished, probably mid summer 1997 guessing from the tunes in the mix. Following the double update 1.1 / 1.2, I couldn’t wait to get back into the studio and cut up a new set of tracks.

I’m still quite proud of this session. The tunes are great: a beautiful summer mix of the classic Sueno Latino, Masters At Work’s groove-bound rework of Brand New Heavies’ Sometimes, fat funky remixes of Shola Ama, Ultra Nate and MK’s Always. The Rosie Gaines track reminds me of DJing at Via Fossa because one of the bouncers always requested it, and in this mix it kicks in beautifully to Sandy B’s much-sampled You Make The World Go Around. We even end with a bit of early euro trance...

With this being another studio mix, all the tracks are edited and mixed perfectly. Another labour of love, making the most of weekends and down time in the studio.

Geek speak:
I remember beat-matching and recording all the vinyl on to a Nicam video before loading it into Studer’s Dyaxsis software. I’m not sure why, maybe the video was simply the easiest way to get the tunes onto the computer. Vinyl turntables were removed from the com prod studio just before I started working at Key 103 - in fact the station had recently relocated to Castlefield and the new studios only had turntables in the one production studio that Stu Allen used.

Somewhere along the line I made a mistake and the first half of the mix is in mono. I can’t remember how this happened but by the time I’d noticed - which was when I was working on track 9, MK’s Always - it was too late. I’d already completed so much, it would have been a mammoth task to start again from scratch. The mono tracks aren’t too noticeable because parts were mastered with some stereo effects and there’s a wicked point in the MK track where the stereo kicks back in. Simple, but really effective.

Enjoy!

So, this is where it all began: a series of noël mixes with numbers in the titles that just confused everyone.

Through the early 90s I was pretty efficient at knocking out a new mix tape every month or so, but for some reason - probably a combination or work and going out too much - I hadn’t committed anything to tape or minidisc for a while. At the time I was working at Key 103 and I’d recently done my first mix in the studio, which I was pretty proud of. I decided that if I was going to ‘update’ my catalogue, it needed to be a stonker. And, with so many tunes to catch up on, I knew if would have to be a double disc.

And cramming in so many tracks would allow me to indulge in my second favourite hobby (next to DJing) of music editing. The station had spent £60k on a computer-based multi-track audio system, which I had just about mastered, and I couldn’t wait to get cracking on a personal project. It meant using the studios outside office hours, grabbing the odd hour in the evenings or going in at the weekends. This was certainly going to be some project...

Burning CDs was pretty new too. No one had computers or even hi-fi CD recorders back then, but we had an expensive Studer one at the radio station. I remember the blank discs alone cost £16 (maybe it was £30) each. Simply committing it to CD gave the mix a little more prestige.

Matt designed the cover - the ‘n’ in a circle - and came up with the font variation for track lists (bold = artist, regular = track, italic = mix) which I still use today. OK, it’s not rocket science, but these were the days when everyone was just moving from dot matrix printers to laser and bubble jet: things suddenly looked a lot smarter. The inlay was printed on tracing paper with the ‘n’, the circle and the title on different layered sheets. He’s always had a talent for great CD packaging, utilising different types of paper, plastics, even petals and leaves.

I’ve lost the front cover, but you can download the back cover here.

I gave the first copy of this to Kath or Janine. I’m pretty sure it was Janine. She had a boozy Sunday afternoon session in Chorlton’s Lead Station to celebrate her birthday.

Enough of the history, on to the tunes. We open with Get Carter, as my good mate and boss at the time had a thing about the melody in the movie. We were going through a pretty hedonistic period and this disc was often the soundtrack.

The first mix sets us up with some funky and commercial party tracks, then turns up the heat in preparation for the tougher second mix, which you find here.

Part two of update 1.1.

We pick up the tempo on this disc, but it’s not all banging stompers as there are a few blissed-out moments courtesy of Chicane and Way Out West. And I still love the deep phat ‘Huff and Puff’ track.

With appearances from the likes of BT and Paul van Dyke, alongside tracks from BBE and Natural Born Grooves, you can see how this pumped-up yet euphoric sound was a precursor to the 1999 trance explosion (with a little help from Mitsubishis...). Those latter two tracks remind me of a Manchester Mardi Gras when Key 103 sponsored an event at GMEX - a particularly messy evening!

Favourite of favourites here though is the closing Moonman tune. Bootyful.

Enjoy! May there be many more ‘updates’!

I’m uploading this in December 2009. I’ve stumbled upon a box of old mix tapes from the mid 90s and this one’s a corker, full of main room peak time vocal anthems.

According to my scribbles on the inlay card (pictures attached to the file) I originally mixed this for Tony Mellor after a lost weekend at The Fridge in London. It may have been Pride weekend when I travelled down with Chris Buckley, Mark & Darren. Anyway, I remember mixing this on a sunny day in my flat in Chorlton.

Highlights include the opening pumped-up version of Where Love Lives, Moné’s Movin’, and The Happy Clappers’ Can’t Help Myself. The Lisa Marie Experience deliver ripping remixes of Helicopter’s classic On Ya Way and Nu Soul’s Hide-A-Way. The Naked Music NYC track has just been sampled and release on Defected.

This is one of my first mixes recorded in a studio. I’d just moved into Matt’s in Stetford and he kept getting burgled so I stored my decks at work. This was in the days when Piccadilly Radio was based in Piccadilly Plaza (Manchester). The commercial production studio was separate from the rest of Key103 and I was often working weekends uploading commericals... so of course it wasn’t long before I’d plugged my Technics into the desk.

Anthony (‘Subbo’) and I would have a few beers, get stoned out the back and play tunes.

With this session I learnt how digital editing could allow you to perfect a mix, restructuring songs as I wanted them, and also how prestigious it felt to have a mix burnt to CD - few people burnt CDs in 1995 as it was far too expensive. This mix spawned ideas that later became the Update 1 CDs.

I had a week off recently and whilst digging around for tunes online I rediscovered a chunk of early remixes by Terry Farley and Pete Heller of Junior Boys Own fame. In the early 90s I was a big fan of their work under the Fire Island and Roach Motel monicas. This session pulls together some of my favourite FI/RM looped bassline grooves and brass stabs.

We open in 1992 with Sunsreem’s classic Perfect Motion, slide through dubs of Juliet Roberts and Monie Love (two records I foggily recall mixing back-to-back continuously one morning after Flesh at the Hacienda), In Your Bones reminds me of dancing downstairs at Paradise Factory with Selina, and as one of the finest house tunes ever produced, Movin’ On has to be one of my Desert Island Discs.

Transatlantic was a tune Ted used to play at post-Strangeways chill outs, and we close with a blissful Balearic take on New Order’s Regret - not a great dance floor moment, but a regular on the car stereo driving to work in my Key103 days.

All this seems pretty fitting as Junior Boys Own hosted their own event in London last night (according to the Guardian Guide, their first in 16 years) and much of the catalogue is now reissued through Defected, although I’ve tried to steer around some of those more obvious classics.

Most of the tunes are from ’92 - ’95 but as I only mixed this today, you’ll also find it on my Latest Mixes podcast. Apologies if you get duplicates. Enjoy!

Perfect Motion: Roach Motel / Fire Island - mixed 3 Oct, chaptered 4 Oct.

I recently found a site full of CD singles from back in the day and, well, filled my boots, replacing worn-out vinyl with digital copies and filling a few gaps in the collection.

Having spent years just heading for the lead mix on a 12” it was interesting to rediscover some of the lesser-played mixes. Here’s a session of those alternative cuts, mainly dub versions, with a few of the smoother classics thrown in for good measure. Most of the tunes are from 93/94, and the session was thrown together for Matt on his birthday 2010.

Although the tunes are from the early 90s, I produced this mix in April ’98 for a birthday party at Maple Ave, Chorlton. Includes: The Fog, Loni Clarke, MK, Joe Roberts, Bassheads, Judy Cheeks, K-Klass, Shy One and more.

I think most people already have a copy of this somewhere, but I’m uploading it anyway.

Volume 2 was mixed 27 Dec 1999 for Millennium New Years Eve party in Bethnal Green, although most of the tracks are circa 1993 (hence the date above).
