Older than the U.S. Air Force itself, AFAS traces its roots back to 1942 and the great 5-Star General Henry “Hap” Arnold. His vision of an organization that embodied the ideal of Airmen helping Airmen still drives our mission today.
Tune in and learn how we’re still delivering on this mission and continuing to make an impact in the lives of so many Air Force families.
Sean Molino, Founder of Veteran Awards CIC, joins the Airmen Helping Airmen Podcast with John Farrell to discuss the fitness role in maintaining and improving veterans' physical and mental health, how Veterans Awards CIC inspires future service leaders, and shares military skills that help veterans succeed after the transition.

Key takeaways
* Serving in various military tactical units, Lila was often the only black female in the room, which came with some challenges. But she relied on strong leadership and individuals, learned from them constantly, and rose up the ranks.
* If you find yourself in a situation where you are the only minority in the room, be aware of what you bring to the table, walk in with confidence, and help the unit or team get better.
* There is always room for growth, so be open to constantly learning from the people around you. Find a mentor to guide you and lean into your potential.
* Transitioning from military to civilian life could be challenging and unbearable for some people, which is why Lila advises them to reach mental health services.
* Though there is still a stigma around mental health for the military, you should overcome it and take that step forward to get help and support.
* The Camouflaged Sisters movement was started by Lila sharing stories of women veterans in her books. So the platform is based on the power of storytelling, how it empowers military women to take back the narrative of their stories and encourage other people who still serve or plan to.
Key takeaways
* As a military spouse, there are times when you feel extra pressure, and you might have to put your career in second place.
* Just like some military folks who have a hard time separating the identity of the uniform when finishing their services, military spouses find it difficult when they have to take breaks from the workforce, take an underemployed and overqualified position, and have gaps in their resumes.
* A civilian employer might find it tough to understand why a military spouse wants to take an entry-level job when she has a master's degree and work experience.
* Laura started The Operation Freelance organization to help military spouses find freelance and remote career opportunities.
* In Operation Freelance, Laura focuses on helping beginners get their very first clients by teaching them how to pitch themselves, write a proposal, negotiate contracts, build a marketing plan, etc. It's the 101 of just getting started and diving in there.
* There are two routes military spouses can take to address some of the career challenges they face. One is becoming an entrepreneur and working for yourself, and the second is becoming a remote employee.
Errol Doebler, Founder of Leader 193, joins the Airmen Helping Airmen Podcast with John Farrell to discuss the lessons he took from Navy SEAL and FBI about effective and poor leadership and his five-step process for effective leadership.
Key facts

* Errol’s Instagram

* Leader 193 Website
* Leader 193 Facebook

* Served as a SEAL Team and Surface Warfare Officer in the US Navy for eight years
* Served as a Special Agent for the FBI for over thirteen years
* Errol is also a top keynote speaker who inspires and motivates audiences to become the best versions of themselves as both leaders and individuals
Key takeaways
* During his time as a Navy SEAL and FBI Agent, Errol designed a five-step process for effective leadership and tested it in the most high-stakes, high-stress environments possible
* Military leadership differs from FBI leadership. In the military, orders must be executed, even if you have doubts. In the FBI, special agents have a tremendous amount of autonomy
* Often, it doesn't matter what you say but how you say it. And you can make someone take your side simply by adopting a convincing attitude
* In every action that you take, there is a trigger that generates emotion. Then you fall back on learned behaviors based on that emotion you are probably unaware of and act in some manner. If you can be aware of each of those elements, you will start making better and more conscious decisions. Next, you must reflect if your decision was a success or failure to adjust it in the future
* Conscious decision-making is the cornerstone of effective leadership

John Osarczuk, Executive Vice President and National Director of Advisor Operations at First Command Financial Services, joins the Airmen Helping Airmen Podcast with Kaleth Wright to discuss the partnership between First Command and Air Force Aid Society, some of the recent changes to the TSP, and how we can help all our service members navigate those changes.

Key takeaways
* Air Force Aid Society and First Command are teaming up in honor of the Air Force's 75th birthday and the Space Force's third birthday. This year, organizations want to match dollar-for-dollar donations up to $25,000
* More than half of career military families feel financially insecure month to month. Though government benefits are significant, they don't cover some specific needs many members need
* In 2022, there was a 4.6% pay raise for military members, the biggest one in two decades. To maximize the benefits of the pay raise, First Command suggests creating a plan for how to allocate those extra funds
* In that plan, allocate about half of that pay raise to your lifestyle. In other words, pay yourself first. Next, save three to six months of living expenses in your emergency savings. With what is left over, put that money towards something that will improve your progress toward your goals
* A great opportunity to make sure that you're maxing out your TSP. Recent TSP changes will offer more investment options through a brand new mutual fund window

* The Attributes: 25 Hidden Drivers of Optimal Performance Book
* Rich has over twenty years of experience as a Navy SEAL Officer
* Rich achieved multiple leadership positions, including the Commanding Officer of a Navy SEAL Command
Key takeaways
As part of a specialized Navy SEAL Command, Rich was responsible for determining which attributes make successful recruits
Passing the basic SEAL training requires courage, adaptability, perseverance, resilience, information prioritization, and high focus. Regarding specialized training, the distinguishing factor is the predominance of the mental acuity attribute. This includes situation awareness, compartmentation, task switching, and learnability
If you want to become a Navy SEAL, focus on why you want to do it. You also need to be highly physical and mentally prepared
Transitioning from a Navy SEAL to a civilian can be challenging. So ask for help from other people, use transition opportunities, and find resources that will make the transition easier
In his book, The Attributes: 25 Hidden Drivers of Optimal Performance, Rich describes the importance of focusing on attributes to judge performance
To develop attributes, you need self-awareness, self-motivation, and a willingness to put yourself into an environment that tests and teases that attribute. Those are going to be uncomfortable environments because it's asking you to do something you are not naturally good at doing
There is a difference between being in charge and being a leader. You can have a high rank or position, but people may not see you as a leader. Other people decide whether or not you are someone they want to follow
The leadership attributes people look for are empathy, selflessness, authenticity, decisiveness, and accountability

* “Although it's cool to be a Navy SEAL, doing the job of a Navy SEAL is never cool. It's always tough, gritty, and dangerous”
* “We are judging performance based on visible skills. But we're missing a huge percentage of the performance equation, and you will not get any information or data on how you or anybody else will perform in a stress challenge and uncertainty”

Key takeaways
* After caring for her husband, a disabled veteran who suffered from PTSD for over a decade, and experiencing homelessness with her family, Ginger vowed to be victorious and worked three jobs and went to school full time to pull her family out of homelessness
* Tackling veteran homelessness requires getting those veterans outta homelessness and preventing others from being homeless at the same time. Becoming homeless is not an overnight process. People first become unstable. When veterans are unstable, they don't reach out for help
* If someone finds themself in that unstable position, they should embrace the reality and ask for help. The best way is to go to a specialized organization, like Women Veterans Interactive
* Women Veterans Interactive started as a division of John 14:2. Then, it became a nonprofit organization that brings a fresh new interactive approach to support women veterans. The foundation works through paid memberships and volunteering
