Santa Clara County District Supervisor shares her thoughts on her neighbor Santa Cruz County
As a lifelong public servant and Felton resident, I’m running for 5th District Supervisor because, like you, I’ve lived through the challenges of the last few years: the pandemic, CZU fire, winter storms. The 5th District is where I’m raising my children, and I want them to grow up in a thriving, resilient community. It’s also where I’ve witnessed county government fall short in helping to rebuild lost homes, and the failing of basic infrastructure like roads, power, broadband, and water. I want to change that - to be a strong voice for the 5th District to accelerate recovery, strengthen resilience, and represent all voices. We deserve better.

Open Ocean Swimmer ……While some of us dance around it, Kim is forthcoming about her competitive nature, and is quick to acknowledge the desire to be “the first”, “the oldest”, “the fastest” in a sport where the water is open and we just have to seize the opportunities before us. Kim sure makes it sound easy to look past the walls you hit during a big undertaking, but selflessly attributes her dogged determination to everyone who has made her impossible swims possible.
Dave Ebert is known as the ‘Lost Shark Guy’ and throughout his career he has searched for, and frequently found, those unknown or little-known sharks, rays and ghost sharks that most people know almost nothing about. How did I get interested in sharks? It started with his parents who gave me a book when he was about five years old. Thumbing through the pages and looking at the various illustrations, he thought these were the coolest critters he had ever seen! He was hooked at an early age and decided to make it my lifelong passion to travel and search for these unusual sharks.
He has always been an explorer at heart and what better way to explore the world than to travel and search for ‘lost sharks’! ‘What is a “lost shark”?’ you might ask. It is basically most species except for those charismatic ones, such as the white shark, that feature in numerous documentaries and in shark attack horror movies. With the exception of Shark Week’s successful Alien Shark< and Extinct or Alive series that feature rare species such as the megamouth and goblin sharks, most shows of this nature only feature the large, toothy variety of sharks. he made it his mission to search for, discover and document the ‘lost sharks’.

Laird also served as a member of the State Integrated Waste Management Board from 2008 to 2009 and taught state environmental policy at University of California Santa Cruz. In 2002, he was elected Assemblymember for the 27th District, which included portions of Monterey, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties, and reelected in 2004 and 2006. While serving the maximum three terms in the Assembly, Laird authored 82 bills that were signed into law.
Prior to serving in the State Assembly, Laird was an elected member of the Cabrillo College Board of Trustees from 1994 to 2002. He also served as executive director of the Santa Cruz AIDS Project from 1991 to 1994.
In 1981, Laird was elected to the Santa Cruz City Council, and served nine years until term limits ended his council service in 1990. He was a two-term mayor from 1983 to 1984 and from 1987 to 1988.
The son of teachers and raised in Vallejo, Laird graduated with honors in politics from the University of California – Santa Cruz in 1972. Al Ramadan is a co-founding partner at Play Bigger Advisors. He has been a CEO, entrepreneur, operating executive and sailing technologist.
Al co-founded Quokka Sports, which pioneered data-intensive sports immersion on the Internet and revolutionized the way people experienced sport. He then joined Macromedia — and Adobe, after Adobe acquired Macromedia — where he spent almost ten years changing the way people think about great digital experiences on the Web and on then-new mobile devices. At Adobe, Al led teams that created the Rich Internet Applications category and helped develop the discipline of experience design.
Al started his career as a mathematician and software engineer — an old-school data scientist. He cut his teeth writing Fortran 77 on a VAX 11/780 and still writes the odd piece of Python code. In the ‘80s he built real time analytics engines for big steel manufacturers and brewing companies. In the early ‘90s he applied data science to Australia's Americas Cup — an innovation in sports performance analytics. His work in sailing led directly to the idea for Quokka.
Al loves the outdoors and remote expeditions. He has hiked the John Muir Trail, sailed in the Sydney / Hobart yacht race, surfed Mavericks, lived on remote atolls in the Pacific and Indian oceans and can often be found bombing back country lines around Tahoe on a split board. He is also a mentor, father and favorite uncle to an ever-growing circle of next-generation superstars.
There are plenty of names people normally associate with Santa Cruz: Peter Mel, Anthony Ruffo, Ken "Skindog" Collins, Flea...certainly the name O'Neill has been branded into the identity of this scruffy little Northern California surf town. But for those who have lived and surfed here for any length of time, there is another name that is equally known, respected and admired: Doug Haut.
Doug Haut started surfing in Santa Cruz in 1957 -- before wetsuits, before leashes, before the university, before crowds.
"Back then, the town closed up at 6:00pm and it was done," Doug laughs. "They rolled up the sidewalks and everybody went to bed. Houses rented for $75. There weren't a lot of surfers around -- the Van Dykes, Jim Foley and his dad, Don Schneider, Danny Reed and those guys."
In 1959 Doug split town to spend a winter surfing on the West Side at Makaha. While there, he fell in love with the powerful Hawaiian waves and easy aloha living and decided to stay awhile. He made enough money to survive by sanding boards for the once-proud Inter-Island brand. Doug also sanded many of the boards built by legendary surfer/shaper Mike Diffenderfer.
"I lived in Hawaii off and on for about six years," Doug says. "I went to school over there, too, at the University of Hawaii. Mainly I lived on the North Shore and in Honolulu. Did a lot of Honolulu surfing. Oh God, it was so good. I used to work on all the local guys' boards: Conrad Cunha, Buddy Boy...and then I started shaping over there on my own. Sanding Diffenderfer's boards for all those years I could feel them in my hands and reproduce that stuff.
"Clean lines. That's what Diffenderfer taught me; curves and foils."
Haut was invited to compete in the prestigious Duke Kahanmoku Invitational in 1964, and by '65 he returned to Northern California and set up his first shop.
"I started shaping locally here for George Olson," Doug explains. "He was getting behind with his orders so I started helping him out. And then this guy Gale Yount had a surf shop in Soquel -- a barn; an old barn back there. Gale went into the Coast Guard and I got his barn and all his tools. And I started my own shop in '65. That was the beginning of the Haut label."
