[ep 3 cover: The Polish People’s Army Film Crew (Czołówka Filmowa Wojska Polskiego), led by Aleksander Ford, followed Soviet forces in their liberation of the Majdanek and Auschwitz death camps. Producing the first documentary showcasing Nazi crimes within the camps, Majdanek — the Cemetery of Europe,similar film crews accompanying Soviet forces produced some of the most iconic images from the Holocaust. Among which is the infamous image of the “Auschwitz Shoes”, seen on this ep. cover, an attempt by Soviet photographers to encapsulate the magnitude of loss and horror encountered in the death camp. The symbolic use of shoes to represent loss is an image that resonated internationally and has remained a staple of mourning memorialization as recently as 9/11.]
