In my podcast "On the border" I want to share different voices from and about Burma / Myanmar.
In the latest episode recorded on January 12, 2018, I meet with David, Kyar Htae and Chu Wai who have different backgrounds and come from different parts of Burma. All three are living and working in an NGO in Mae Sot, a Thai town just on the border to Burma. In our brief discussion, we talk about the choices they have made and their thoughts about the future. Would you change anything in your book about The Lady if you would write again today? - was one of the questions I asked author and journalist Jesper Bengtsson whom I had the privilege to speak to on October 4. Since he is also from Sweden, we of course had to start with a short check in about the weather. However, the main focus of our conversation was the peace and democracy process of Burma, a situation that he has followed for many years.
Detta avsnitt av Burmapodden fokuserar på jämställdhet och feminism. Jag möter Pyo Let Han som var med och startade organisationen Rainfall Gender Studies Organization där hon nu verkar bland annat som redaktör och skribent för magasinet Rainfall. Vårt samtal handlar om hinder, möjligheter och förändringar i området jämställdhet, främst mellan kvinnor och män, i dagens Burma.
Efter att ha varit en hårt kontrollerad och stängd militärdiktatur under 40 års tid står Burma nu mitt inne i stora positiva förändringar. Det första demokratiska valet på 25 år genomfördes i november 2015 och medförde ett maktskifte då National League for Democracy vann en jordsskredsseger med 80% av rösterna. Hur ser människor i Burma på framtiden? Vågar man tro att förändring är möjlig? I detta avsnitt av Burmapodden möter vi taxichauffören Stephen och studenterna Lum San Raw Bu och Nilar Aung som ger oss sina tankar och åsikter.
Det allra första avsnittet av Burmapodden utspelar sig i staden Mae Sot i norra Thailand, mycket nära gränsen till Burma. Det uppskattas att ungefär halva Mae Sots befolkning är migranter från Burma. Stora delar av avsnittet handlar om Mae Tao Clinic som startades 1989 av Dr Cynthia Maung för att tillgodose rätten till hälso- och sjukvård för de många migranterna i området. Förutom Dr Cynthia får vi träffa Kennedy som jobbar på kliniken.
