Dr. Garen Wintemute, an emergency room doctor and expert joins us to further discuss the issues and impacts of gun violence along with guests Dr. Julie Parsonnet, Dr. Dean Winslow and DeVitta Briscoe.
Garen J. Wintemute is a renowned expert on the public health crisis of gun violence and a pioneer in the field of injury epidemiology and prevention of firearm violence, which results in approximately 30,000 deaths a year and approximately 75,000 nonfatal injuries seen in hospital emergency departments.
Dr. Wintemute’s longstanding commitment to understand the nature of firearm violence and its underlying causes has produced a uniquely rich and informative body of research on firearm violence that directly improves the health and safety of Americans and has positioned California and UC Davis as national leaders in efforts to break the cycle of gun violence.

“From Juvenile Hall to City Hall: Your Resume Can Change” is the title of the autobiography & journey of Alive & Free alum & San Francisco’s District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton.
“Because even in my life professionally having something to look forward to is always something that drives me and the fact that. When I came home, I knew I had an opportunity to go back to a historically Black college and university. It was right before my senior year. Now, I always gotten decent grades, even through incarceration, even through being expelled from school, even being a teen parent. All these things are talked about in the book because your circumstances really can change. But that trip changed my life forever and I truly believe without that experience, I would not be sitting here with you.”
We are also joined by author Terrance Hunter who author his memoir written a memoir “My 30 Years with the California Department of Corrections: Thirty Years of Incarceration… Led to His Miraculous Transformation!” in which Terrance expresses the spiritual and mental shifts he underwent while within the correctional facility.

The 6888th had 855 predominately all Black women, both enlisted and officers, and was led by Major Charity Adams. It was the only predominately all-black, all-female battalion sent overseas during World War II.

Stopping the Violence: Why is there so much violence and what have you seen work to stop it?
Callers share their thoughts about the issue as we speak with violence prevention leaders across the country and world.
On the panel: Devitta Briscoe, Khalid Elahi, Tamiko Ferguson, Stefan Wilson, Garey Thompson, Jermaine King, Doug Fort, Llowellyn Syce and Tamisha Walker.
“I’ve been thinking about this, especially with our team and our organization-the Safe Project- when we address Issues of violence- we look at systems, cultures and situations. What we always discuss is choice and mindset. A lot of what we talk about is a lot of what you teach- we have conversations about respect what do you get out of violence. And so for me when I think about why there is so much violence, whether it’s gun violence or domestic violence, I think there is a challenge with communication and how to express yourself.
Emotional intelligence is so important to teach and our communities and society, because not every situation has to drive you to the point of committing violence.
I think understanding your own emotional intelligence and the trauma that you’ve faced and the potential to harm other people, what the consequences of it can be. I think it’s easy to choose violence. It’s harder to think through and use your emotional intelligence to assert the impact that not just to the individual you’re harming, but to yourself, to your family and to your community,” shares Tamisha Torres Walker, Antioch’s Mayor ProTem and executive director of Safe Return Project- a non-profit that works to dismantle the mass incarceration system and utilize those funds towards resourcing, rehabilitation, and prevention in the community.

We stop, you stop! Street Soldiers Radio talks about the use of the n-word in the aftermath of the student/teacher incident at Richmond High School.
Markeith Anderson, a sophomore and Black Student Union member, organized a protest in protest of the use of the N-word on campus after a student allegedly used the racial slur when talking with a Black substitute teacher. The substitute was seen on video grabbing the student, throwing him to the floor, and forcibly removing the teen from the classroom.
He joins us along with Kiraa Easter, an advisor for Richmond’s BSU.
We also speak with local Bay Area teachers about the incident.

The Blerd Academy (Black Nerds) joins Street Soldiers Radio to share how they help African-American students earn scholarships to HBCU’s and graduate debt free!
Meet Douglass Fort, founder of the Blerd Academy, who works with college-bound students, who may be enrolled in advanced placement (AP) classes with above average grades.
Fort says that since these kids are expected to go to college, school administers rarely put resources toward celebrating and guiding these students.
“In the black community, we highlight three different people,” Fort says. “We highlight the athlete, the musician or the misbehaved. We never highlight the nerd.”
