Is the Impossible Burger safe for you to eat? The answer is pretty basic to understand. First and foremost, humans consume food. Food is not 14 patents and over 100 patents pending. Food should nourish and not destroy your DNA, cause inflammation (the cause of all disease) and destroy the earth.

DO YOU NEED CARBS AND FIBER?

The answer for this question is more simple than you may think. Do you need carbs to rebuild cells? Do you need carbs to produce hormones? Do you truly need carbs to function? The answer is an astounding NO. Carbs are fuel. Pure and simple!

1g carbohydrate= 4 calories. Therefore, 200g carbs= 800 calories. An intense weight training session requires only 200 total calories. Therefore, where is the other 600 calories going? Add another 50g protein, which is another 200 calories and you just overfilled your gas tank.

How to cure your acne with nutrition and hormone regulation

Intro/ Acne’s effects With Diet

  • 85% of teenagers have acne

    • A history of moderate to severe acne is highly correlated with increased risk of breast and prostate cancer

      • Hormonal based and TOR
      • It is considered a western disease and is far less and even nonexistent in many countries, especially less industrialised
    • TOR activity is known to be raised with moderate amounts of dairy and any processed foods

      • Increased TOR is correlated to premature puberty, acne, cancer, expedited cellular aging, diabetes, alzhimer’s and more

Acne and Hormones

  • 70% of all young adults have skin problems during puberty

    • Most times acne significantly improves as an adult, (over 25yrs) but 40% still are affected by it, predominantly women at 85% of them
    • Adult Onset in the “t-zone” of the forehead, nose and chin is a correlated sign of hormone imbalance, usually high testosterone

    • Same with the chin strap

    • During puberty, male and females get a surge in all hormones, including androgens

    • This stimulates sebrum in sebaceous glands, and too much accumulation causes acne

      • Too little causes cracked dry skin, too much can cause a hard plug around follicle to cause acne
      • For men, our hormones typically stabilize after puberty, women is a different story
    • Monthly fluctuations for 20 years, massive changes post menopause, pregnancy causes several more monthly surges.

    • Earmuff talk for The Mad Scientist;- premenstral acne

      • Women are most likely to get it in the 2nd half of their cycle
      • Progesterone and Oestrogen increase heavily in the first 2 weeks, and then plummet right before…”it” happens and they are at their lowest

        • When they drop, testosterone is actually higher than most female reproductive hormones, sebrum is still high from progesterone boost, and acne is likely - Some women find that contraceptives help via SHBG (sex-hormone binding globulin) sponges up testosterone with increases estrogens and decreases sebrum, and acne

The Gut to Skin Axis

  • If there is SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and the gut is inflamed, it rapidly causes systemic inflammation via inflammatory cytokines throughout the body

    • Skin is the largest organ of the body so no wonder it frequently gets attacked
    • This is leaky gut, what occurs with food sensitivites and allergies that aren’t in check, SAD diet, etc
    • Skin, brain fog, and bloating are the most common symptoms when there is a gut issue, and when it is the primary factor involved, going on a precise healthy lifestyle for the individual typically causes rapid changes in all 3 areas.

Dairy Acne

  • Research showed that dairy and sugar are among the greatest factors associated with acne. In this analysis, more people with acne consume dairy products (48.2%) compared to those who don’t (38.8%). People who regularly eat soda, pastries, chocolates and other sweets were also more likely to suffer from acne

    • There is also all the sugar that is in milk, as well as inflammatory for many people with sensitivities which increases acne chance
    • Acne is mostly a Western civilization disease with 85% of adolescents having it

    • Aside from a random pimple or 2, basically unheard of in eastern cultures, especially those without high glycemic packaged foods and dairy

    • The majority of our milk comes from pregnant cows where their hormones are even higher than normal, but then we add hormones to them to produce even more.

    • Appears to be a part of hormonal acne.

    • We aren’t cows, and we aren’t meant to be drinking milk from mothers into and beyond our 20’s anyway! Not very natural

      • I don’t drink human milk at this age, nor should we (colostrum is a different topic) but it would still be better as our bodies were made a little

Does Chocolate cause acne?

  • Apparently, yes!

    • A study had capsules of white chocolate, placebo, and pure cocoa powder and acne prone subjects ate 240 of them to act as a “binge”

      • The white chocolate group had the most increases in pimples, white/black heads
      • But cocoa still doubled the acne in 4 days.

        • Some pimple prone may get it from chocolate. Likely to decrease as we age
        • This study however was men only

          • Would there be more or less if the hormonal fluctuating women were tested?- don’t know, but we can argue about it?
            • Previously thought it was just the milk and sugar involved (plays a factor though)
            • Cutting back sugar and processed foods however, helps nearly all acne sensitive individuals due to inflammatory markers within a few months, even with severe acne

Acne and Bacteria

  • Drugs are the go to for the majority still in the wEstern culture, though tides are slowly changing to less invasive and damaging modalities, but are still very rampant.

    • Antibiotics are still the first line prescribed treatment for acne, even though it’s statistically not as effective as it was a decade ago

      • Due to more acne caused by hormones and diet?
      • Bacteria have evolved to be more drug resistant
      • More people have acne due to non-bacterial causes which will shift the percentage of antibiotic effective treatment
      • Bacteria can cause acne due to having too much “bad” or good bacteria on the skin where they cause a decrease in the breakdown of sebrum, and cause the follicle to become inflamed and create acne
      • Antibiotics though may inversely cause acne and other issues down the road due to killing the gut flora, causing an imbalance, and then return to systemic inflammation

Other causes?

  • Over washing your face

    • Just like how over doing hand sanitizer kills the bacteria that creates a protective barrier and can increase the risk of warts

      • This can deplete the protective skin barrier allowing bacteria and blockages of pores and increase acne
      • Skin could then try to overcompensate for depleted oils, and create more which can in turn, lead to more acne

Tea tree oil or Benyzol alcohol

  • These are the 2 most commonly used self care items people try for acne, and for some decent reasons, mostly due to they are the top google findings and searches for it.
  • There was a RCT comparing the 2

    • In 6 weeks with tea tree oil

      • 40% decrease in white/black heads, 47& drop in pus filled pimples and 40% drop in red and tender acne bumps

        • 3.5x more effective than placebo - Helps with the inflammation, but not bactericidal in pimples due to a biofilm protective layer- works in petri dish just fine….
          • Benzoyl peroxide- most common over the counter method, even with known side effects
      • May cause irritation, red itchy skin, peeling, dryness, or burning

      • Was about 5-15% more effective than Tea Tree oil

Barberry

  • I was asked about this one specifically, so here it is

    • Looks like an elongated cranberry
    • Has berberine in high amounts
    • 43%-45% less pimples and zits in 1 month

      • 2 tablespoons of juice a day

Many things associated with poor health can be either directly or indirectly linked to our lifestyle habits - the things we do on a day to day basis, the people we interact with, the eating, drinking, and movement habits we form.

  • Studies have shown that the most effective way to make lasting lifestyle changes is to correctly identify limiting beliefs and assess your existing relationship with the areas in your life (like health) where you could potentially improve.

Our goal is that you will finally have the chance to identify and assess limiting beliefs they have about their health and wellbeing to enable them to make lasting effective change!

Intro

  • The carnivore diet has been becoming more mainstream as of late and gaining attention over media

    • Some attention has been positive, some negative, and like always with nutrition there is a lot of conflicting evidence.
    • Let’s straighten this out
    • The Keto Project Movie- Phase 3 in full force

    • Dr. Mike is living this lecture with Organic End Grass fed beef to compare to the Burger King burger diet for a month

What is it carnivore diet

  • Potentially a form of a Ketogenic diet

    • Similar to how pescatarian, lacto-ovo, vegan, etc, are all similar sub categories of vegetarian
    • May cancel some out of ketosis if protein is high enough, hence the “potentially a form” of a ketogenic lifestyle

      • The concept is that high enough protein can cause the body to go through gluconeogenesis which will increase blood sugar levels and potentially negate ketosis
      • Literature is mixed so larger and longer studies required

        • If unsure, cover everything is butter, coconut oil, and cheese to increase the fat to protein ratio to increase ketogenic effects
        • What do people eat?
    • Anything from a meat/animal source

      • Beef, chicken, organ meats, fish, eggs
      • Bone marrow/broth, lard, dairy

        • Inuits are the gold standard example
      • Incredibly low levels of heart, liver, and kidney disease

      • Eats a crapton of blubber and organ meats
      • Higher fat content in meat than many that practice the carnivorous approach
      • What Don’t people eat
    • I have had this argument before

    • Alcohol, coffee, chocolate

      • What animal does hobbs, rye, coffee beans, and chocolate nibs come from?

Potential benefits from it

  • Weight loss depending on dietary lifestyle prior

    • Higher satiety from high fat and protein so less likely to over indulge
    • Can increase testosterone levels

    • High healthy animal meats, specifically red meat and more on the medium rare side

    • Can increase RBC’s and heme-iron stores for a better cardiovascular system

    • Quality of meat is a huge factor

    • Metabolism may increase by up to 10-20%

    • Protein take more energy to digest and takes more effort to breakdown

    • More thermogenic activity

      • The body gets hotter when doing high metabolic processes; The Meat Sweats
      • It can help blood pressure, glucose regulation, cholesterol levels, and gut flora balances
      • Mild evidence suggests it can increase autophagy if protein is high enough over fat ratios

Why you may not want to do it

  • Majority of lifestyles may not be the best with specific health conditions which is why medical history should always be a part of deciding the best lifestyle for one to follow
  • We know that we can eat up to 4.4g per kg of body weight and cause no short term health issues
  • If your religion is against eating meat
  • If you have a current kidney or liver condition

    • Research have suggested that high protein/meat diets do not cause organ damage but may worsen it if already present

      • It’s like running on a broken leg compared to a healthy leg
      • Running takes a larger toll on the leg than sitting but won’t be an issue if the limb is healthy

        • Wouldn’t recommend jogging if leg has an issue
        • Same with the kidneys, liver, and high protein/meat based lifestyle

          • High protein makes them work a little harder, but the body will handle it fine as long as it’s healthy
          • Gout- Red meat is one of the main things suggested to avoid due to uric acid build up

Better than vegan?

  • Depends on the health status and goals of the individual.

    • Oddly easy to compare carnivorous to veganism
    • Polar opposite but similar caveats
    • Both may require specific supplementation
    • Both heavily differ on effectiveness of a healthy life style depending on what quality of food you intake

      • Vegetarian can eat just cakes and chocolate
      • Carnivore can eat just Burger King
      • Having organ meats, bone broth and marrow, preparing meat in quality oils and not deep frying, etc
      • Organic grass finished will have higher levels of omega 3’s, and more abundant supply of micro nutrients

Likely supplementation to assist

  • Bone collagen or bone broth could help keep bacteria at a healthy ration compared to just meat portions of animal products

    • They will have the SCFA (short chain fatty acids) butyrate

      • Helps protect the intestinal wall for leaky gut prevention and assistance
      • May need to add vitamin c
    • Also will help the iron absorption and avoid scurvy if this life style is done long term

      • Can be found in liver and eggs
      • Organ meats and bone marrow/broth will stop most potential deficiencies

        • Like seaweed for B12 and vegetarian based diets
        • Prebiotic/fiber
    • High protein diet will offset bad bacteria that was acquired through high carbohydrates and process foods

      • Needs prebiotics to feed the good bacteria

Debate- “Quarantine 15lbs” is “No Big Deal”

  • Intro-
  • Weight gain during quarantine makes sense, but doesnt mean it should be accepted or not changed

    • “Middle aisles” in grocery stores were empty early on in April 2020
    • Only 18% went to gyms regularly, defined as 104 days of the year

      • 2x a week, so how much of this weight gain is the gym?

        • Reminder- we don’t need gyms to exercise.
      • Calisthenics, tennis, parks, biking

        • Eat less if you are less active than previous
        • There has been a lot more stress, depression, and at first there was food scarcity scares
        • Gyms closed, and many still are
      • Term is “quarantine 15”, but we don’t know what the averages is, just that our weight and waist line is going up

    • Height, weight, body curves, size of features, etc
    • Includes how you feel others believe you look

      • Connected to self esteem and self worth
      • What’s a healthy body image?
    • You are genuinely comfortable with and feel good about the way you look

    • It has more to do with mental health than physical much of the time
    • We are all very aware of professional celebrity and even social media photos being unrealistic

    • Photoshop, dehydrated, exercises prior, specific lighting and background color, body position and flexing, etc

    • My body image

    • History of anorexia

      • Highschool wrestling and fear of becoming obese

        • Was easy to hide for me but I was very aware
        • Nobody expected it from a male, and controlling weight for sport was a simple cover up with competing year round. - “Got over it” from lifting weights and worrying about the weight of the dumbbells and not my body - Aspects of mindset doesn’t always go away

        • Swore to have abs 15-50yrs, and plan on more

          • Dysmorphic
      • I feel like it’s controlled and has helped me achieve things I wouldn’t have otherwise.

      • Debatably healthy

Disorders

      • “My abs are popping enough”; “My butt and legs are too big/small”; “my left shoulder is so flabby compared to my right”; etc

        • Stops people from fully enjoying or participating in social settings
      • Does not wear revealing bathing suits, refuses to take shirt off at beach, responds negatively when someone comments or even compliments your body aspect

        • This is me personally now
      • Orthorexia nervosa-
    • Involves a strong obsession with healthy eating

      • Revolves more around food quality and not quantity
      • Rarely focused on losing weight
      • More on being as healthy as possible and may appear to be fanatical to others
      • Associated with and could be a gateway into hypochondrial disorders
      • Anaorexia
    • Disordered definition- an emotional disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat

    • Medical definition- lack or loss of appetite
    • Approximately 1% of the USA population has anorexia in their lifetime

      • 1 in 5 die from it or complications from it
      • About half have comorbid anxiety or social disorders
      • 60% “fully recover

        • Stays focused on food and weight but lives a normal life

        • Bulimia Nervosa
    • An emotional disorder characterised by extreme eating and then regret and purging thereafter.

      • Goes to the bathroom right after eating every meal

Sports and relation to eating disorders and body image?

  • More athletes have eating disorders than non-athletes
  • 49.2% of College D1 and 40% of DIII athletes are considered to have an eating disorder.

    • Extreme pressure from collegiate and professional coaches

      • More stress of body image comes from teammates

        • Constantly trying to be better than their peers
        • Teasing each other for how they look and eat while being an athlete
        • Those more susceptible to body image issues are well documented at avoiding sports due to uniforms
    • Some are functional and have an advantage like swimmers

    • Others like volleyball do not and the difference between male and female uniforms are obvious and likely due to in part of sexual exploitation

      • Or cross country males with shorts. This is functional to a degree, but has stopped many from competing in the sport
      • 33% of all female athletes have a body image or eating disorder
    • 33% of males in weight and aesthetic sports

      • Wrestling, Bodybuilding, Jockey
      • Football 40% collegiate and professional athletes binge and purge like bulimia
      • Perception of men vs women athletes
    • Average and smaller than average men want to be larger with various goals of tone

    • Women of all sizes want to be smaller

Thin and Fat shaming-

  • Defined- Prejudice to the thin/obese
  • Thin shaming

    • Women who are naturally thin and are assumed to be anorexic

      • “”Go eat a burger”
      • “Only dogs want bones”

Fat Shaming

    • More well known long standing
    • Big in children
    • Increasing over social media of all ages

Parent’s Roles for Children

  • Children obviously watch and listen to us all the time and affects them consciously and subconsciously.
  • They will be swayed by your habits and ideals

    • Healthy habits you do, they are more likely to do as well

      • Eating well, exercising, confidence, etc
      • Avoid “Fat Talk”
    • When you talk negatively about your own body in front of others

      • Many parents to this and it affects their kids
      • “I look fat in these jeans”, “I look disgusting”, “Gosh I’m heavy”
        • Children will be more likely to have these talks and the negative mental loop occurs
      • Talk positive instead, it’s better for everybody anyway

How to deal with these first person and 3rd person?

  • Have goals that aren’t based on your negative view point

    • For example, I focused on weight of dumbbells instead of the scale
    • Focus on your sport’s drills and skills to be faster and more precise
    • Know that a lot of these features may stay with you, but embrace it and turn it into a strength
    • Know that in general, nobody else cares what you look like
    • Be the best version of you and know that the way you look, really isn’t part of that

Why women live longer

Intro

  • American Man 76yrs, Woman 81yr

    • And the woman’s extra years tend to be healthy ones.
    • World Wide avg is about 3 yrs if born the same day and location.
    • Women live about 5% longer than men

    • Including “Deaths of all causes”

    • In 2015, of 50 oldest people alive, 2 were men
    • This gender gap in life expectancy is true for all societies, and it is also true for the great apes, chimpanzees, orangutans.
    • One early thought was that men worked more physical jobs throughout their lives.

    • But if that were so, the gender life expectancy would be getting more narrow, it’s not

Early life

  • “Early advantage” More males are born; 105 to every 100 girls

    • 7% higher fetal death of males
    • Increases to 21% more than females by first birthday
    • Pattern continues, by 65yrs old there are only 75 men for every 100 women

Men vs Women General

  • Men are larger

    • Larger bodies use more energy, which causes more wear and tear
    • Taller people have more cells that turn over and greater chances for mutations
    • Eating 1600kcal will have you live longer than 2000
    • More Stubborn with avoiding health care for routine checkups and health concerns

    • And less compliant to treatment

    • Men have more visceral fat whereas women have more subcutaneous fat

    • Testosterone Vs Estrogens

    • More visceral fat increases cardiovascular disease risk

Risky behavior-

  • Valid, but not the largest factor in life expectancy difference

    • Increased habits of smoking, drinking, and over eating

      • More so in some countries than others
      • Russian men die 13 years on average prior to women

Risky/Avoidable Early Death

  • Men more likely all deaths from all causes in all age groups-accidents, suicide, malignant neoplasms, diseases of the circulatory system, homicide, and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis

    • except automobile accidents - as driver

      • Possible reasons

        • In general women drive less
        • They are shorter and can make it harder to see, especially at intersections
  • Men `10x more likely to die at work- riskier jobs and take larger risks when on job site

  • Women have always gotten sick more, even after accounting for how they care more about being medically checked on

    • Theory- women get more infections to build antibodies for offspring for a better immune system

Hormones

  • Estrogens

    • “Jogging female heart” hypothesis –

      • Women’s heart rate increases during 2nd half of menstrual cycle

        • Offers the same benefits as mild/moderate exercise
          • Sex hormone Oestrogen is a strong antioxidant
      • Estrogens have been found to prevent DNA damage and aid longevity

      • Men can benefit from it though too
      • Testosterone
    • Korean scientist noticed Eunuchs lived for 70yrs on average

      • Average male was 50yrs
      • 130x more likely to see their 100th birthday

        • Same finding for psychiatric patients “treated” by castration
      • But only if done so before the age of 15

        • Testosterone protects our cardiovascular system early in life, and increases risk when older
      • Hypertension, CVD, atherosclerosis, etc

Chromosomes

  • Chromosomes come in pairs, and whereas women have two X chromosomes, men have an X and a Y chromosome.

    • May slightly alter the way cells age

      • Women having an extra copy of every gene is a “spare” if the other goes faulty/mutated
      • Men don’t have that back-up. The result is that more cells may begin to malfunction with time, putting men at greater risk of disease.

        • Thousands of cell cycles later could make a difference

Clay Diet

  • Various methods, main staple is eating bentonite clay

    • Made from ash, used for many healthy purposes- skin for example
    • Weight loss Concept

    • It swell in stomach to 2x the size to fill you up

    • Attaches to heavy metals and “toxins”
    • Star Power - Zoe Kravits was recommended Clay Diet to lose 20ls for “The Road Within”

    • It worked, but she said it

    • “Felt awful” “I was a space cadet and sick” “ I don't recommend this to anybody
    • “Ate a mason jar of clay and purred vegetables and ran a lot”
    • Complications

    • Studies do show it causes abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and constipation.

    • Can perforate bowels and cause acute kidney damage
    • Binds to everything good and bad

      • Slows calcium and iron absorption
      • Can slow down medications
      • Supports Often Say
    • “Proven” to attach to fat, in rat models. But what’s wrong with fat? And I’m not a mouse

    • Aboriginals do it!

      • Australian Aboriginals do it for weight loss where most do it to combat hunger
      • Australian aboriginals have some of the highest Diabetes and heart disease in the world for tribesmen

        • Comparing a healthy habit to one of the least healthy of their kind?

The Fletcherizing Diet

  • One of the Original Fad Diets
  • Medical Definition of fletcherize

    • to reduce (food) to tiny particles especially by prolonged chewing

      • Origins of the chew for 32x model
        • “Nature will castigate those who don’t masticate,” claimed Dr. Horace Fletcher,
      • Concept
    • Chew all food 100x, even liquids so they can “properly mix with saliva for digestion”

    • People lost weight

      • Very slow eating period
      • Got full with eating less
      • Got tired of chewing for so long and would eat less

        • Also original who touted to know what it is that you are eating
        • He heavily claimed and announced that this diet can make your feces smell better.
      • For everybody who cares about that…

      • Famous Fletcherizers-
    • Thomas Edison, Mark Twain, and John D. Rockefeller

    • There are known benefits to chewing more

    • Slows us down so we eat less

    • Allows us to enjoy our food instead of inhale and vanish
    • We absorb more nutrients

      • Whole corn or spinach in your stool? Didn’t absorb it, you eat to quickly

        • Chew everything 32 times compared to 10 and…
      • Took almost twice as long to eat

      • Ate 12% less

        • 240kcal on a 2000kcal diet
        • Significant enough to lose weight
        • Fletcher made millions and then a new dietary theory came out called “Calorie Counting”

The Master Cleanse, AKA The Lemonade Diet AKA The Diuretic diet

  • There are a ton of variations

    • All basically come down to 5 to 10 days of lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper into water
    • approximately 600kcal
    • Essentially just ingesting diuretics
    • Does it work?

    • Can lose 10 to 20 pounds of WATER weight relatively quickly

    • An original bonus was cited as you“Don’t need teeth”
    • Should I do it

    • Will gain the weight right back once they eat food and water again

    • Can rapidly lose muscle when in extreme caloric deficit
    • Common side effects of fatigue, nausea, dizziness, dehydration, stomach pains
    • Sounds like montezuma's revenge from school to me (Vitamin C and Magnesium)

The Five Bite Diet

  • Eat whatever you want -- but only five bites of it.

    • No breakfast except black coffee
    • Eat anything you desire for lunch and dinner, but only 5 bites of each
    • Drink as much 0 Calorie fluids as youd like
    • The concept is smaller portions to an extreme

    • Very difficult to get even 1000kcal in if you try

    • Doesn't matter what you eat, just how much
    • Standard day is

    • Breakfast- Black coffee and a multivitamin

    • Lunch- 3 bites of a burger and 2 of a salad
    • Dinner- 3 bites of macaroni and cheese and 2 of apple pie
    • Sounds like justified anorexia

    • Better off not eating (metabolically speaking) then eating so little and being malnourished and rapidly decrease your metabolism

Cigarettes For Weight Loss

  • Smoking kills 1 in 5 people
  • Has been known for decades it is an appetite suppressant

    • Nicotine specifically
    • Is a common reason for teenagers, mostly female, to start smoking

    • Common reason why people don’t stop smoking after they start

    • Eating disorder patients are 250% more likely to smoke
    • Suppresses hunger, but are smokers thinner?

    • Depends

      • Heavy smokers tend to be more obese

        • So its not the more you smoke the lighter you get - Light smokers tend to be thinner then nonsmokers
          • Smoking increases viceral fat
          • Correlated with metabolic syndrome and diabetes type 2
        • Smokers usually gain weight when they quit
    • No longer suppressing appetite

    • Tend to eat food instead of smoking to kick the habit
    • But what about Just Nicotine?
    • Patches, pills, etc

    • Stimulant that releases epinephrine

      • Fight or flight/sympathetic response
      • Increases heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose levels

        • Raises metabolic rate - Can wan hunger

        • Activate reward center in brain opposed to donuts

        • Increases blood glycogen and dopamine to curve appetite
          • Is addicting and can easily cause side effects in large doses
      • Stomach and headaches

      • Dizziness, tremors
      • Nausea, high blood pressure

Fun Friday at Functionised is hosted by Jim Goetz, Chantea Goetz with weekly special guest, Dr. Michael Brandon. Intro- Like diet, we look for east-outs and magic pills for exercise Fads come routinely We look for the least effort, ideally entertainment involved, and promises of maximum results Typically don’t work Wii fit- The whole console had wide spread popularity Cruise lines, retirement homes, day camps, because “active” Wii Fit and Wii Sports Fit- predomenitly on or near a balance board Told weight, BMI, and Wii fit age Based mostly on balance- important but not major part of fitness and exercise health Different modes Strength- single leg extension, russian twist, lunges, plank Yoga- balance Aerobics- jog in place or hula hooping with wii-mote in pocket to track Does have progressions, increased time or repetitions of an exercise Better than “traditional” games for health, but not exercise Wii Sports- calories tracked Wii tennis- 5 calories a minute, real tennis, 8kcal Wii boxing 7kcal/min, Light sparring 11kcal Almost half, but better than nothing Not an exercise replacement Entertaining and easily marketable Hawaii Chair “If you can sit, you can get fit” Oscillates up to 2800rpm in Hula hoop style It does all the work, but proper seating will give a mild core burn from trying to maintain balance Suggested to do at work for phone calls, computer work, etc Ellen Show- Showed her having difficulty pouring water Work isn’t likely going to happen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHiqV... Maybe better for watching tv Hawaii Chair Commercial https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_co... Meuler Belt- Huge in the early 1900’s as a sedentary exercise Stand still with a wide belt around you and gives a rapid and short vibration to and fro Thought was how vibration can cause contractions Validity like the vibe plate, but this just shook the external fat Would change belt position every few minutes to “target” different areas. Vomiting and heartburn was commonplace Don’t eat before you try 1 study showed it increased white blood cell count in the obese; science is unsure why Concept was spot training of the abdominals and buttocks Spot training doesn’t work, and this didn’t affect muscles anyway At best it could give a mild increase in tone as if one was to flex abs all day. Flexing is normal response to outside abdominal movement, like being punched when we tense ourselves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iet33... Here is a class of men using it from the 1930’s Shake weight- Designed to oscillate to “increase muscle activation during exercise” Great marketing tool due to the sexual nature Simply can’t use it and make it look normal Like making eye contact with a friend while eating a banana- hysterical Lacks 2 key elements of strength training Doesn’t work muscles in a full ROM There is no progressions such as increased resistance It has been shown to not increase muscle firing as the product suggests Can give some endurance and tone to forearms at best But so does the old brick tied to a stick method Horse Riding Fitness Power Ace- Company Commercial and box says: “Meant for anyone who wants to workout by riding a horse while watching TV in their living room” Do not attempt these moves without the machine or you may fall and hurt yourself” Meant to mimic the muscles engaged during horseback riding This does impact core and legs rather well on a horse It looks like a partial collapsible bipod with a seat that springs and wiggles lightly Like a far less aggressive mechanical bull that you put the motions into Advertised as working the quads, but the machine stands you up so legs are minimally affected You wiggle and thrust, looks incredibly sexual Lower back does a lot of the effort, and you can fall off if you “get into it” and thrust too hard If weak or inhibited core, could actually hurt your back on this Appears to poorly mimic riding anything, and doesn’t give much of a workout https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtwZM... Healthy Happy Hour with Jim Goetz and Chantea Goetz of Functionised present the dangers and how to protect yourself from harmful EMF exposure. Jim and Chantea Goetz take you through the in's and out's of the causes, effects and modalities to overcome the deletrious effects of harmful EMF exposure.

It is estimated that 3-8 percent of populations in developed countries experience serious electrohypersensitivity symptoms, while 35 percent experience mild symptoms, according to Dr. Thomas Rau, medical director of the world-renowned Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland. Dr. Rau also believes that 'electromagnetic loads' lead to cancer, concentration problems, ADD, tinnitus, migraines, insomnia, arrhythmia, Parkinson's, and even back pain.

For people with Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome (EHS), just walking into a coffee shop that is WI-FI equipped can be debilitating, triggering a wide array of symptoms including headache, fatigue, nausea, burning and itchy skin, and muscle aches. Some students have to drop out of school or are unable to continue on to graduate programs once they become electrically sensitive, irrespective of their intelligence and capabilities.

Even just briefly standing in line at the post office, or traveling on public transportation, can be a debilitating experience for some people, sometimes taking hours to restore balance.

Even your physical body, such as your body weight, body-mass index, bone density, and water and electrolyte levels can alter the conductivity and biological reactivity to EMFs. Children are also particularly vulnerable.

Theres a lot of stupid and even fatal things people have done for weight loss

Tape Worm

Gained popularity in early 1900s, now illegal

Would take pills of eggs

Generally effective

Could eat more kcal but lose weight

Appeared to help prevent Hay Fever

Guarenteed vit/min deficiency

Bloated

Eggs get laid and larvae can travel through the body and lay cysts in eyes, spinal cord, and brain

I do this for sport, would ask people in gym why wearing hoodie on treadmil

NOT FAT LOSS

Going to gain it back by drinking, or die from thirst

Organ damage short AND long term

Kidney, heart, liver- my legs

Even sports are trying to get rid of it

Not maintanable

  1. The cotton ball diet

Soaks cotton balls in juice or a smoothie- puts in face

Curbs appetite and reduces calories

Dangerous

Mostly bleacher polyester and not cotton, still bleached if so

Can create Bezoars-

Artificial clumping in the stomach or intestine

Bowel obstruction.convulsion

Nausea, bloating, stomach pain

Gangreen, death

Nutrient deficient

Bleach is a neuro toxin and releases Dioxins

Toxic to immune cells, carcinogenic, and disrupts reproductive health

Technically an eating disorder, PICA

Magic Weight Loss Pills

1950’s/60s prescribed a lot by doctors

Would have arsenic and amphetamines in them

Was effective for weight loss

Increased BMR and muscle activity

. It makes a person’s heartbeat faster, causes them to breathe faster and raises their body temperature. These factors all require more energy

Stays awake longer- burn more by being awake

Causes anorexia and muscle wasting

(yes, methamphetamines) is still approved by the Food and Drug Administration for short-term weight loss for certain people- schedule 2. Schedule 1 is pot, lcd, heroine…

It was effective so people would take more, and die

increased heart rate, anorexia, mood swings, headache, seizure, death, trouble sleeping

Adderrall is a weak variant but still can cause the same side effects, pro and con

Obesity and Cancer- Your Fault or Your Genetics

intro conversation

Does genetics impact you getting obese.

Maybe;

Genetics minor role

Your choices and circumstances can increase or decrease your genetic risk

This means we can somewhat control it

A few hundred years ago we werent eating and very active to survive

hence why we have fat to store

Society allows easy access- and we eat excess

Good news is that you have the control this

Anyone can lose weight

Calories in vs out

Decreased metabolism, diabetes, complicate

But unhealthy life style caused it

Changing to a healthy one early enough reverses it and many others.

Genetics and obesity FTO

Cant deny environments part on making us obese, but how much does genetics matter?

“Runs in the family” - habits, not genetics

Italian pasta sedentary family- kids become?

Our genes didn’t suddenly change 100 years ago.(obesity)

however 100-ish genetic markers linked to obesity.

all of them together account for less than 3% difference in BMI between people

. The “fat gene” (called FTO, “FaT mass and Obesity associated’’) most linked

less than 1 percent difference between people- 0.34 percent.

Do you have FTO?

Who cares- results in a few hundred extra calories per year

In other words, no; those genes don’t make you look fat.

FTO gene has appears weaker among physically active,

may be abolished in those eating healthier diets.

FTO only appears to affect certian high sat/tran fats and sugar

Thos active and healthy eating, no increased weight gain risk even with fto from both parents

FTO gene status does not appear to affect your ability to lose weight.

We were designed for food to be addicting

Obesity does usually become lack of willpower

Eat right, workout right, live well)drink smoke)

Our environment makes us use self control for food

Id love to eat a bunch of junk too, some of it is delicious!- moderate

We are designed to eat everything, and move to survive- not required anymore

its why we crave sugar and fat- fast and high cal

Since food wasnt always available, those that could eat the most survived the longest.,

We no longer need to be active to be alive, so we have to do it voluntarily a lot- exercise

Cancer and genetics

Cancer= mutations, then uncontrolled growth

External- tobacco, alcohol, standing in radioactive sludge, south park microwave etc

Internal- “random cellular changes

Inherited mutations-

Different; in the dna of every cell

Genetics affect cancer, but so does environment

Inherited genetic mutations plays role in 5 to 10 percent of all cancers

Slightly more with hormonal cancers in generl

Colon CA- has been increasing 1% to 3% annually- not solely genetic

Our environment will activate those susceptible to cancer

Cancer growers- like kidney stone growers

.Genetic testing for cancers-

can, but may not want to, depends.

Suggested if

several close relatives have had it,

if youve had it or another cancer before,

Just want to be proactive

Have a physical trait suggesting CA- Café-au-lait spots

Neurofibromatosis-

Genetic, changes nerve growth, causes nerve tumors

10% to 25% have café-au-lait spots; NF

is suspected when a person has 6 or more

Cancer and Enviroment-

“Everything causes cancer now”

Cleaners, tobacco, alcohol, standing in radioactive goo, cooking with foil

Cancer percentage has increased

Especially younger adults, 20-50yrs

heavily correlated with youth obesity

Excess body fat increases

Colorectal, uterine, kidney, pancreatic and more

constantly from inflammation

Visceral fat releases estrogens

higher estrogen levels increase cell production, could result in tumor growth,”

Fat cells release proinflammatides

Ending thoughts?

Healthy lifestyle = diet AND exercise people.

healthy lifestyle can help prevent and treat diseases more than genetics

Not excuses for why youre unhealthy, find reasons and ways to change it

Meet Brad Kearns, an Athlete who has no limits.

Brad Kearns is all fired up to be Functionised in this episode of the Functionised podcast with the madscientist Jim Goetz.

Highlights from the episode;

  • 10.33 Brad speaks about how becoming an athlete is not all about having fun.
  • 16.30 Brad dwells into some of the extreme endurance athletes.
  • 35.00 Brad Kearns discusses the big three modern foods.
  • 53.39 Brad offers some life advice.

Brad talks about when he got his ass kicked many times and only then did he realize that his impersonality flaws got the better of him, but regardless, he still wanted to compete at the top level with the very best. He says that he had to make adjustments like resting more and regulating his heart rate, thus sticking with the plan patiently.

Brad Kearns narrates about a dream he had of becoming an athlete his whole life. It was difficult because he was a young guy in the game trying to compete, but he says that he enjoyed that challenge. In his first year, he upset the top-grade guys in the world, and right there he made his name known to the people. Several media centers and sponsors started reaching out and from there onwards, he started getting more serious because of the challenges. Asked if his training times were commensurating with where he should be, Brad says you have to cultivate the natural sense of confidence which builds gradually through hard work.

As the episode rolls on, both the mad scientist Jim Goetz and Brad Kearns talk about the Netflix documentary called iron cowboy. You’ll hear Brad Kearns laugh a little bit and says the extreme endurance athletes are amazing in what they do and it’s a great inspiration, but one has to take care of the body physically and not push it too much. According to Brad Kearns, the greatest training breakthrough was the wireless heart rate monitor which he says he wears one even now.  He mentions his app called (BradBeat HRV) where he says he doesn’t want numbers telling him what to do but instead uses his intuition.

Asked whether he's been living a ketogenic lifestyle which is believed to be a suitable lifestyle for athletes, he replies by echoing about a recent discovery where your body adapts to be a fat-burning machine without the necessity of external calorie ingestion. What's needed is to change your diet into one that has fewer carbs (he explains it so well)

Brad Kearns emphasizes that the best way to get into ketosis is through fasting rather than taking in lots of fat. Brad Kearns being in the health business for a while, is triggered to talk about MOFO (Male Optimization Formula W/Organs). Before we forget, when it comes to speed golf, Brad is among the top 20 across the globe in the pro circuit and In fact, he set the speed golf score record and then broke it twice.

Brad Kearns offers some advice to the public stating that no matter the age, the athletic background, or current life circumstances, you just have to find that one thing that lights you up to keep you going every day you wake up. Brad Kearns has a podcast called get over yourself.

What is it?

With nutrition we typically think of weight loss, what about brain loss?

Dementia from brain degeneration

Physiology

Slow onset

Prevention and a healthy lifestyle is key

Amyloid plaques/tau proteins

Clumped protein, sticky, kills nerve cell and neuronal connections

Nerves don't innervate other neurons, they become unhealthy-progression of dz

Causes many “mini strokes”.

Berry aneurysms when bad- acute dementia

Causes?

Genetic- nope

Parents have it- its shared lifestyle- we get from parents/family

African American's in Nigeria- 5x less likely then Indianapolis, Indiana- nurture not nature

TBI Head Trauma-

Neuro-inflammation

Post concussion syndrome- symptoms yrs later

Major contributor for many neurological disorders

Vascular- the big one

Cranial atherosclerosis appears #1 cause of alzheimers/dementia

Less blood flow, no O2, neurons die

1quart blood in brain a min

15-20% less by 65yrs

Silent “mini strokes” brain atrophies and plaques

Berry aneurysms- acute dementia

Risk factors- high BP/cholesterol, DM

Nutrition

High sugar/cholesterol

Pro inflam/atherosclerosis

Heavy metals- copper- multi vits unless tested to need it

DM type 2/ “Type 3”

15-20x more likely for alzheimers

Insulin resistance increases amyloid plaque

Oxidized cholesterol

Beta oxidation of fats

Have your veggies/antioxidants

sugar/trans/sat fats except sterate and laureate (lowers LDL)

Chronic Poor Sleep- Glyphatic system

Damaged tau proteins get cleaned in deep sleep

Turn to plaque, cell death

“Graveyard shift”

Higher rate for heart dz, stroke, DM, dementia, CA

Circadian rhythm needs regulation and ran by light

Eating late- dietary circadian rhythm, not as much as tv/cell light

Prevention/symptom assistance

Low Carb/Swank diet/keto

Made for neuro- myelin sheath/ketones

Mediterranean lowest alzheimers rate

olives/fish/veggies

Fasting

Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor learning/memory, makes hippocampus cells

Neurons more resistant to stressors/oxidation

Autophagy of plauqes/dead cells

Lowers insulin resistance/sugar levels

Turmeric/saffron

Slows inflammation, slows amyloid production

Jim Goetz and Dr. Mike Brandon of Functionised discuss the in's and out's of body fat, why you gain it, whats good about it, what's bad about it and how to remove excess.

Woes of Fat

Define fat- adipose, so body fat%, not bmi!

Speaking white adipose here, not brown

For men, a percentage of body fat greater than 25% defines obesity, with 21-25% being borderline. For women, over 33% defines obesity, with 31-33% being borderline.

-other than being ugly, we get told to lose it, but why?

Just to buy new clothes

Physical

Excess weight on joints, back, neck

More difficult for correct posture which leads to more pain

Hormones it effects- why they matter

Leptin

suppress hunger, when depleted increases obesity- Where does it come from/why does it stop

Injections dont help. Ceiling for it and brain becomes resistant to it Does not increase leptin by decreasing food intake; rather, lack of leptin acts as a signal to increase food intake Obesity decreases sensitivity to it, so DM and obese have a harder time feeling full

Aromatase- is released

Converts test to estrogen- decreases metabolism, increases insulin resistance

High estrogen issues

Females- Homronal acne, depressed metabolism, irregular menstration, bloating, cold/itchy hands/feet, insomnia, headaches, low sex drive, increased breast and other cancer risks

Males- gynecamastia, low sex drive, Erectile dsfunction, infertilaty

Resistin- also released by epithelial cells, increased secretion with a high body fat percentage

Directly increases insulin resistance-

Increases production of LDL cholesterol

Increases cardio vascular disease risk

Appears that centralised/wastline adipose releases more than other locations

Association with DMtype 2 and centralised obesity faster than booty fat

Pro inflammatides- mainly from resistin

Interlukin 1, 3, 6; tumor necrosis factor-

Causes systemic long term inflammation, like food sensitivities too

Inflammation basis for …

Increases risk of rheumatoid conditions

Neuro transmitters

Serotonin is released with insulin secretion, mainly from carb diet which is VERY common in obesity.

“Use too much” serotonin and we get a little depressed, eat more sugar to increase mood, becomes less effective so do more frequently

Part of the addiction cycle of carby foods

Leads to many more poor choices when depressed

Serotonin and dopamine

Decreased transporters, so it gets harder to use these happy hormones/endorphions

Comorbidities- things that are increased risk and caused by or in part by obesity

Heart disease

DM- resistin, and poor life style habits

Cancer- hormonal cancers more so, but increased of all cancers since others are inflammatory

Stroke - better chance surviving it...but also getting it

Homron imbalances- stated above

GI issues - inflammation of bowel, and then colon cancer,

Dementia-

Healing time?

Depression- serotonin burn out

Body dysmorphic disorder describes a condition where a person can’t stop thinking about one or more perceived flaws with her appearance. The flaw can either be minor or one that is imagined. Seen from an outside perspective, the obsession with these flaws will seem unnecessary or baseless, but to the person, her appearance seems so shameful and distressing that in some cases she won’t want to be seen by anyone.

Liz Murphy, known on Instagram as "Red Bank Red", knows this first hand and also has done a remarkable job in helping others overcome this as she has overcome it herself. How Do You Digest Your STRESS??

Did you know that up to 27% of adults use STRESS as an excuse for overeating? (34% of these admit it to be a habit!)

If you’re one of the many people who turn to food as a means of dealing with their STRESS, then you’ve come to the right place. Emotional (or stress) eating has become an ever-increasing problem among today’s workforce, to the extent that it can often be difficult to determine if what you’re feeling is actual hunger, or simply an unprocessed bout of stress and extreme emotion.

Repeated Thoughts, Repeated Action

The more often you treat a period of intense stress or emotion with an excess intake of food, the more accustomed your body becomes to receiving it, and the more likely it is that it will happen again.

Quite often, these periods of intense emotion or stress can be confused with the need to overeat, simply because you’ve created a habit of doing so.
