Dr. Pernell says when it comes to Daylight Savings Time, the extra hours of daylight offer us more than we may think. As we move out of Winter and into Spring, the longer days afford us more opportunities to do the things that bring us joy.

In an interview, Dr. Pernell can discuss the following ways to put those extra hours to good use.

  • Get Outside! Gone are the winter days where by the time we get off work, the sun has gone down and we want to do nothing but go home, eat dinner, and jump back in bed. The extra hours of daylight offer more opportunities to get outside, enjoy the warmer weather, and soak in more Vitamin D! Time outdoors and time in the sun has been proven to lift moods and help alleviate signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety.

  • Use the extra hours to try new recipes or pick up a new hobby. Whether you are getting up earlier or just utilizing the extra daylight at the end of a workday, the longer days may have you feeling inspired to try new recipes or pick up a new creative outlet. This is a great way to boost moods, expand your interests, and continue to grow and learn as an individual.

-Elevate your morning routine. Winter mornings are tough. It can be hard to get out of bed and greet the day with gusto when it is cold and dark. With the arrival of Spring and more daylight, comes new opportunities to revamp your morning routine to get your day started off right. Maybe you want to do a healthier breakfast, maybe you can squeeze in a 15 or 20 minute workout, maybe you have a minute to start your day with mindfulness or meditation. The way we start our day can affect the rest of the day's events, so consider upgrading your morning routine.

  • Make a vision board. Use this time of renewal to create a visual representation of the goals you would like to set for yourself. Vision boards can be a great way to bring your goals to life and clearly define what it is you are trying to accomplish.

  • Reconnect. With longer days before us, we are likely to feel less inclined to hole up at home and rather be drawn to more opportunities for socialization. Reach out to a friend on the drive to work. Invite a co-worker out after hours, or make time to reconnect with friends, family, or neighbors, you may have lost touch with through the winter.

MASON COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH DIRECTOR DISCUSSES THE NEXT PHASE OF THE PANDEMIC AS THE STATE MASK MANDATE ENDS

(KMAS) Jeff Slakey chatted with Mason County Public Health Director Dave Windom for the first time since the statewide mask mandate ended over the weekend.

Oregon and Washington lifted their mask mandate effective Saturday, becoming the last states in the country to end the policies that began at the start of the pandemic in the U.S. in 2020.

Windom was hopeful about the declining numbers in Covid numbers and stated that we are entering more of an “endemic” stage of Covid 19, putting an emphasis on people managing their personal health as opposed to government mandates.

An “endemic” means Covid is in the community and is going to be in the community.

“Think flu,” Windom explained. “We don’t do mandatory reporting for flu cases but we do track flu hospitalizations. We will be paying attention to numbers in the hospitals and using case counts as we pay attention to Covid as the numbers continue to come down. We will be treating it more like the flu.”

“Numbers are looking better than they have looked since last July so that is looking good. Here in Mason County, we are down to just a few new cases a day,” said Windom.

He did emphasize that the low numbers are a good sign but also perhaps a sign that since many people are now testing at home and not reporting their personal results, the numbers might be especially low for those reasons, too.

Windom says that the best thing people can do right now is to pay attention to themselves.

“If you’re symptomatic, you can take a test. If you’ve been with someone who is a known Covid exposure, wait five days and take a test,” said Windom.

He also pointed out that we should offer grace to people who will choose to stay masked up, despite the mandate going away this past Saturday.

“There are people out there who are still not comfortable with taking masks off and we need to respect that,” Windom stated to Jeff in the Daybreak interview.

Windom reminds people that the County still has test kits and masks available to those who want them.

Jeff shared with Windom and the listeners that when he recently visited the North Mason Chamber of Commerce office, there were test kits available while supplies last.

Windom says Mason County Public Health will be analyzing what went well and what didn’t go well during the past two years, and make adjustments in case things crop up again.

If you have questions or concerns, call 360-427-9670, extension 588, for the Mason County Covid Team.

Executive Director Wendy Smith and Commissioner and Commission Chair Dick Taylor checked in with Jeff Slakey on Daybreak.

Wendy announced that the wingsuit manufacturer Squirrel LLC, which recently leased a space at Sanderson Field, is breaking ground and relocating their whole manufacturing facility to the Port of Shelton from Seattle.

Everyone is extremely excited about this addition of Squirrel LLC to Sanderson Field, especially after the long delays from Covid and the long process of proper permit acquisition. They should be able to roll out full operations by early summer.

“It’s like having a little piece of Hollywood along with the jump team at Kapowsin. It helps put Shelton on the map to have them making the suits right here,” Wendy explained.

The Port of Shelton recently had its retreat and they discussed how to improve tenant retention as well as some expansion projects.

“In terms of our cash position, we are in a super position. When I came on the Commission a long time ago,” Taylor said with a smile, “we had about $100,000 in reserves. Now we have just under $5 million.”

Taylor went on to explain how this is a huge benefit to the Port and its projects.

“It means we have capital that we can use towards building new projects to benefit our tenants and the community and bring in more jobs. I am excited for our future,” Taylor said.

Smith added that the Commission recently purchased a couple of buildings that they are currently renovating and that have good lease potential, which opens up the possibilities for every area of the community.

All agreed that the diversity of the Port of Shelton’s tenants adds richness and diversity to the community.

If you are looking for an event space rental or for potential areas to develop or to expand your business or organization, reach out to the Port of Shelton at www.portofshelton.com.

(KMAS) Dan Griffey made his weekly appearance this week on Daybreak and he and Jeff Slakey discussed the new transportation-construction package in the House, among other things.

The controversial cross-border tax was struck from the bill.

Unfortunately, according to Griffey, the money would now be taken from the Public Works Trust Fund. Many communities use this fund for a variety of infrastructure projects. Representative Griffey does not think that this redirecting of the Trust Fund money will stand in final reviews.

Jeff asked who constituents should reach out to should they want to contact someone about this legislation. Representative Griffey suggested contacting the committee chairs, who know the ins and out of the process. Constituents can also call Representative Griffey’s office at (360) 786-7966, and they can help state their case to the committees. His website is dangriffey.houserepublicans.wa.gov.

The two also addressed the “Rainy Day” Fund and how low it is as a percentage of the budget. Griffey guesses the strategic reserves will be somewhere in the amount of $100 million out of a total spending amount of around $65 billion.   “With $13 billion in unexpected revenues, I think we could have done a lot better,” said Griffey.

Representative Griffey also suggested we should be prepared in light of the war in Ukraine, saying the events between Ukraine and Russia will have global implications.

He said that the state’s ability to repay debts is similar to an individual’s ability to repay debts and that the more money a state has in reserves, the higher the state’s bond rating. This has a big influence on Washington’s ability to borrow money and to pay it back.

The upcoming fire season was also a subject of discussion in the interview.

“A resilient forest is one that resists the effects of wildfires."

“When you look at the treated sections and the non treated sections, it’s night and day as far as resistance,” Griffey said. It’s the difference between a fire hitting a forest at a “snail’s pace” versus the swiftness of a “freight train.”

Representative Griffey, a local firefighter as well, explained we can’t let our guard down.

“We will need to make sure our firefighting equipment remains state of the art and that it can be deployed quickly”, said Griffey.

Representative Dan Griffey represents the 35th District and appears weekly on Daybreak during the Legislative Session.

From the Press Release:

Hunting Bigfoot Opens at Shelton Cinemas; Friday, November 12.

The film’s star, John Green, will attend the Saturday, November 13, 7 pm screening and take part in a post-screening Q & A.

When filmmaker Taylor Guterson (Old Goats, Burkholder) initially contemplated his fourth feature film he knew two things “I wanted to film predominantly outdoors in the Northwest and John Green was going to star in it.”

A Northwest native, Guterson loves the outdoors and realized “the natural beauty of this region would give a movie a visual appeal and production value well beyond anything money could buy.” Guterson had worked with Green before, having cast him in a small role in a previous film in which Green made a definite impression, “After the first take of the first scene John was in, I knew this was someone I could build a feature film around” Guterson recalls.

The film which ultimately emerged, Hunting Bigfoot, is a compelling drama (which includes a healthy dose of humor) about a man obsessed by an all-consuming quest to verify the existence of a Sasquatch he claims to have witnessed. The film introduces the audience to the Bigfoot subculture, featuring interviews with people recounting their Bigfoot encounters and appearances by recognized Bigfoot authorities.

But, as Green observes, “the film is about a lot more than Bigfoot. It’s about a human being searching for meaning in his life. That’s what gives it a universal appeal.”

Hunting Bigfoot is being released by Xenon Pictures. Leigh Savidge, Xenon CEO and an Academy Award nominee for his screenwriting work on Straight Outta’ Compton, is one of the film’s Executive Producers, as is Tom Gorai, whose producing credits include Outsourced, Nostalgia, and Arlington Road.

The film’s unique distribution strategy initially focuses on a region by region national theatrical rollout partnering primarily with owner-operated independent theatres. The strategy also includes working with local Chambers of Commerce to encourage local business communities to engage in network marketing and related activities in support of the film.

In addition to providing independent theatres a film which is not simultaneously available for streaming at home, a rarity in the current environment, Hunting Bigfoot offers significantly better financial terms than independent theatres typically receive. “When we say we want to partner with independent theatres in presenting this film we mean it” says Savidge. “We want them to be engaged and be able to really benefit from its success.”

For independent theatres coming off a year plus of Covid-19 restrictions this distribution approach holds a lot of appeal. “The financial terms and not having to compete with folks being able to stream the same film at home are both very helpful” says Beth Burrows, owner operator of the North Bend Theatre. She also notes an additional benefit “Their willingness to ask for our input on the best ways to reach our audience and really listen to our advice is a breath of fresh air.”

According to Kelly Coughlin, Executive Director of the Snoqualmie Valley Chamber of Commerce, “Our members are happy to help spread the word because they know a film drawing large audiences at a local theatre means more business for coffee shops, bars, and restaurants, before and after each screening. “

“There’s nothing more instructive for a filmmaker than to see their work in front of a live audience" says Guterson, who is especially gratified to have Hunting Bigfoot supporting independent theatres like the Shelton Cinemas, "They will immediately let you know what works and what doesn’t, and in either case, the energy and engagement are amazing." Ultimately, observes Guterson, "It’s the way movies were meant to be seen.”
