On this episode we had the privilege to spend some time with Tyisha Chambers Todd. Her story made national news and shocked our nation getting attention from our president at the time, Barrack Obama. He sent his well wishes along with so many others at the funeral. On April 6, 2015 Tyisha’s life would change forever. Seven of her children and ex-husband tragically were poised by Carbon Monoxide and died in their sleep. Tyisha shares with us a few memories of her children and how her surviving son and herself plan to keep their memory alive while serving others.

On Saturday, April 1st, 2017 a well established Community Organization, Fireflies of Denton Maryland honored youth across the Eastern Shore who are excelling in the areas of music, art, sports, academics and community service. This organizations foundation is based upon strengthening the family and community. They have hosted other events including 100 Men of Distinction and 100 Ladies of Elegance. These events have drawn crowds of hundreds! The community gathered at North Caroline High School for this latest event to acknowledge and support the recipients on this day. The age range was from K-12 and up to 20 years old. This event was also well diverse. Supporters and speakers included the Mayor and dignitaries from the Governors office. We were able to chat with parents, grandparents and other family and friends that traveled as far as Washington DC to attend this event.

Treena Ringgold is the Director of Sozo Performing Arts Ministry & CEO & Founder of PlayLady Studios. At an early age, Treena always had a knack for writing stories. However, her gift would lie dormant for many years until 2007, with a push from her Pastors, Treena wrote and directed her first stage play called, “The Lunch Date”, which tackled complex social issues such as domestic violence and AIDS.
In 2009, Treena won the National Black Gospel Play Award, headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee for her play, “Preach the Word”. Since that time, Treena has continued to write plays that challenge the traditional structure. Treena has partnered with various community groups to raise awareness of social issues facing the African-American community. She has also performed her plays at local universities such as Morgan State and Salisbury University.
Treena noticed an intense desire to write films. In 2013, while talking with a co-worker, the idea for PlayLady Studios was born. “Keeping the reel real” is the slogan. In 2015, Play Lady Studios shot its first film called, “Secrets in the Pulpit”, detailing the life of a pastor who has a problem with domestic violence in his home. PlayLady Studios reaches across generational lines to provide real solutions to real problems.

This weekend we were on location at the Annual Harriet Tubman Banquet on in Cambridge, MD, for Harriet Tubman Day, hosted by the Harriet Tubman Association as they commemorated the life and legacy of this great woman who was born in their town. Antoine Patton is a Sergeant with the Cambridge, MD Police Department and supervises the departments Community Policing/Special Operations Unit. While being the supervisor of these divisions he received a governors citation from the governor for his contributions and efforts to reduce crime in the city of Cambridge. While working with the police department Patton has received six honorable service awards and five meritorious awards. He has worked as a K9 officer, Bicycle officer, Narcotics officer, Detective and was a member of the Cambridge Police SWAT team.

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised by a single mother, T,Chanel was raised in a Baptist church where her great-grand mother was the Pastor. Growing up surrounded by the sounds of southern Gospel, she could not help but develop a love for music and began singing in the church choir at age 5. Under the tutelage of her mother, the choir’s lead vocalist, and her aunt, the church pianist, T’Chanel began to develop her musical acumen and cultivated her ear for music. Her appetite wetted by her affinity for music and supported by her inherent musical ability, the young musician ravenously sought to increase her knowledge of music throughout her youth by joining her elementary, middle and high school band, learning to read music, and playing multiple wood wind instruments, including the flute and recorder. As she matured as a musician and a young woman, so too did her musical influences.

Dr. Brad Christensen develops STEM curriculum and conducts teacher workshops on STEM pedagogy at the Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (CeMaST) at Illinois State University. He started his career over 30 years ago as a shop teacher at a small school in rural Nebraska. He holds both an MA and Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on integrated STEM instruction. Dr. Christensen makes extensive use the constructivist learning cycle format and believes strongly that we all learn best by doing and most of us learn only when we have a compelling reason to do so.

Radio Guest: Claudia Toback began her teaching career more than 50 years ago in New York City’s public schools. She considered herself a six-week wonder, as a “graduate” of the Intensive Teaching Training Program. With science and math teacher shortages looming, NYC offered recent college graduates the opportunity to teach. She took the challenge and began teaching 9th-grade science to inattentive students. That changed when she buckled down to make science more exciting. Claudia developed special class projects that integrated science, math and engineering, which she claims is the precursor to STEM. Although retired from the classroom, Claudia is actively engaged in working with a new generation of science teachers in her position as a field supervisor for Hunter College.

Dr. Sheila Williams has over 20 years of successful professional experience. Her expertise is very eclectic as she is an Independent Consultant (SW Consulting Services, LLC), a Mental Health Therapist, a Behavior Analyst, Counselor, Published Author and Educational Leader where she currently holds the position of Director of Education. She has an extensive educational background as she holds a BA in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from the University of Central Florida, an MA in Counseling from Webster University and a Ph.D. in Leadership and Education from Barry University.
After caring for her Mother who suffered from Clinical Depression and Multiple Sclerosis, Dr. Williams decided to pursue her education and career in the Mental Health field. With a love for education and a background in helping others, she remained in the Social Service Industry for over 10 years. She saw the correlation between at-risk students and social/emotional disorders and decided to make the transition to higher education administration.
Dr. Williams has a natural love for life and finds joy in helping others to reach their fullest potential. She often is encountered by those who can’t believe her story, so with that, she decided to write her autobiography. In this episode we will be discussing "I'm on my job: What it means to be a real father." In honor of Fathers Day I will be interviewing Wallabe CEO of Wallabe Enterprises, youth motivational speaker, and artist. We will be discussing his journey in life and fatherhood.
For the last 20 years of his professional and personal life, Kami Roberts has worked with teenagers, families, couples and individuals to look at the various issues that are negatively affecting their lives. He graduated from New York University with a Bachelors’ degree in Applied Psychology (1994) and then he went on to get a Masters’ degree in Social Work (1997) from New York University Graduate School of Social Work.
His work included stints in the Department of Education, Kings County Hospital, Grand Street Settlement, Jewish Board of Family and Children Services (JBFCS), Youth DARES and Bridge Back to Life.
With his vast experience working with New York’s most troubled families, this has helped to prepare Mr. Kami Roberts to start his own organization. Mr. Roberts currently has an office in Brooklyn (Ditmas Park) where he meets with clients. He also does presentations to help organizations in need of insight as to how to better work with problematic situations in their midst . Mr. Roberts recently served as Chairman of the Elder Board at Clarendon Road Church of the Christian & Missionary Alliance. He currently resides in Central Brooklyn with his wife of 20 years and his two children.

Inspired by her love of children, Stephanie is an educator, artist, and mother of Tiffanie Nina Simone Hayes. She is also the founder of Dreams of Becoming a Better Me. The Tiffanie Nina Simone Foundation. The foundation was created in memory of Tiffanie who passed away in 2011 from the neurological disorder, Rett Syndrome at the age of 14. Rett Syndrome is a progressive disorder that affects girls in the infancy stages and currently there is no known cure but great strides are being made daily through research. Ms. Gives is a frequent guest speaker at local community programs and women groups in her city and the South East.
Stephanie has been an educator for Pre-K programs for a number of years. Her first children’s book entitled, “The Best Girlfriends Ever”, is based on her daughter and her three best friends. Her next project, which she is also writing and illustrating, will be entitled, “Mommy and Me Under the Magnolia Tree”. Akhirah enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, writing, and playing soccer and running track. She is looking forward to writing more books.
Kelsie Akers is currently the host of K-Star Radio Show. She is a high school student in Baltimore Maryland and believes in the importance of teaching young girls that they can be anything and everything they want to be. The focus of today's program is the school-to-prison pipeline and it's impact on students of color and the educational landscape. From the early 1980's strict "Zero Tolerance" policies and the political climate of the day yielded an increase in the response to student discipline in schools across America. This response resulted in a disproportionate number of minority students being negatively affected by the application of these polices.
