Jeff Durbin- John 1:12-13 -We are in our exposition and series on the Gospel According to John.Today, we are going to examine a powerful and central theme in God's incredible story of redemption: regeneration or the new birth. Scripture teaches throughout (and John makes the point over and over again) that man, in his natural state, is fallen and spiritually dead. We are alienated from God because of our sin and we are unable and unwilling to come to God for life, peace, and forgiveness. However, John gives us a beautiful truth in the text before us. Our being children of God and our having a new birth is not something in us, through us, or because of us. It is solely a work of God with all of the boasting, credit, and glory to God Himself. That is a soul-satisfying truth. It gives us confident hope in our walk before the Lord and our future inheritance with Him. He loves us. He gives us everything we lack and all that we need through His sovereign will and power.
We are in our study and exposition of the Gospel According to John: St. John's Gospel - He Walked Among Us. Today, we are looking at the life and ministry of John the Baptist. John was a powerful and mighty believer. God gave prophecy concerning his coming and God used him to prepare the people of God as well as introduce Him as the forerunner.I pray that our study of John will empower us to trust in the faithful God Who keeps His promises and to live our lives with the same passion, discipline, and commitment as this mighty man of God.
-Jeff Durbin-We are in our expositional study of St. John's Gospel. Today, we are listening to John expand upon the identity of the One He wants us to believe in and have life in.John 1:1-14 delivers a potent and unmistakable message about Jesus. John puts a fine point upon his explanation so as to make it impossible to distort without obvious distortion: Jesus is the eternal God, always in the presence of the Father, the One in Whom life itself originates, the One Who condescends and walks among us to bring light that obliterates darkness. This is John's Christ. The True Christ. Our Christ.
Today we dive back into John 1:1, but since the Jehovah's Witnesses who come to your dooroften have pre-memorized speeches about the verse, we need to be prepared. There are awhole range of ingenious interpretations of the first verse of John's Gospel that have beensuggested down through the centuries by those who rejected, for one reason or another, theover-all message of the Gospel of John. We will be looking at a range of these objectionstoday so that we will be ready to "give an answer" when the opportunity arises.
Jeff Durbin- John 1:1-3 -This week at Apologia Church we start our new sermon series on the Gospel of John.
Jeff Durbin-1 Corinthians 1:18-31-I want to thank our Lord for the blessing, honor, and privilege have had in preparing and delivering messages from the Book of Proverbs these last few years. This sermon series was so challenging to me, personally. It was challenging in at least two ways:1. Preaching through Proverbs is a very different preparation, process, and delivery than other types of books and letters in the Scriptures. Many Pastors have told me they have avoided preaching through it because of the unique challenges it presents in delivering weekly expositional messages through the book.2. The content in this marvelous book is so cutting, convicting, and transforming it had to always be preached to myself before I ever dared bring it to you. I've been changed. And 1 am so grateful.Today, we are on the final summary message on the Wisdom from Above: Christ is the true Wisdom of God.May God bless us all to see this incredible truth.
Brian Gunter- Revelation 14:9-13 - We worship an infinitely holy God who demands justice against sinners for their sin. Our doctrine of Hell even affects some essential Christian doctrines, so we must be prepared to explain and defend what the Bible teaches about Hell.
-Ephesians 2:1-10-A deeper understanding of the Grace we have received in Christ enables us to be more gracious and patient. It cultivates faithfulness, humility and a deep reliance upon Christ who is the only fount from which this blessing flows. May the Lord bless His people this evening through His word and give us a more robust understanding, and appreciation of this glorious gift. This week at Apologia Church the sermon was preached by Wes Fuller from County Line Church and our partner in End Abortion Now!Soli Deo Gloria!
-James White-Psalm 121 is one of the Songs of Ascent. God's people have sung, and read, and meditated upon, these words for thousands of years. What does the Lord have for us in these words today?
Jeff Durbin-Proverbs 13:24-We are in the final stages of our study of the Book of Proverbs, Today, we are going to meditate upon the many instances in the glorious book where God speaks to how we are to love our children with discipline. The world is broken and sinful. However, God gives us His loving instruction and wisdom on how to help to guide, transform, and correct the heart of a child so that when they are older they know how to walk and live in His world.I pray that God uses these truths to transform us all.Soli Deo Gloria!
Jeff Durbin-Proverbs 28:1-We are in the final stages of our meditation upon God's Wisdom in the Book of Proverbs.Today, we will look to God's Word about what distinguishes the wicked from the righteous: boldness. The wicked flee and are cowards. The righteous are as bold as lions. Bold in life.Bold in death. Bold in conflict. Bold with the truth.May God, by His Spirit, make us bold. May God free us from the temptation to flee.Soli Deo Gloria!
Scripture says a lot about fear. One the one hand, God is constantly calling His people to not be afraid, to not fear, to resist the fear of man, and to trust Him. On the other hand, God calls us to fear Him.Fear God. Not man. Not our circumstances. Not the future. Not any human being. Not what someone can do to us.We are safe in the Lord. Always, and in all circumstances.May God help us to rest in the safety we have in His sovereign hands.
Pastor Jeff Durbin continues our Wisdom From Above series with this sermon Proverbs 29:1.
Jeff Durbin-Proverbs 28:9-We are continuing in our study of God's Divine Wisdom in the Book of Proverbs. Today, we are going to examine God's Wisdom and warning about turning away our ears from hearing God's Law. This truth from the Word of God is particularly important in our day. The theological landscape is filled with unbiblical views on the Law of God. Many are taught that God's Law is no longer an abiding standard for Christians under the New Covenant. They are encouraged to no longer hear the Law of God. It's imbedded in their theology and preaching. God's Wisdom says something so different. It gives us guidance on what our heart, mind, and ear's posture is to be when given God's instruction.May God bless us with a love for His Law!
The Son of God is risen from the grave! Death has been defeated! Because He lives, we will live also! It's hard, truly hard, to express which point of God's story of Redemption is more beautiful. I struggle with this. And, that's perfectly alright. It's a good, necessary, and appropriate struggle. What can we explain the glories of more? The power and love of His death for us? The power and victory of His defeat of death? It's too hard to manage. How can we? Creatures like us will never fully comprehend the depths of both events. Yet, here we are. Once again, we will delight ourselves in the majesty of Incarnate love. The full stretch of incomprehensible wonders in the God Who loves the offenders with such a depth that He steps down to chase them and pay their debt. Before He drew us, we reveled in that debt and its consequences. Until that glorious redemption was applied. We are great sinners. Jesus, during this week of redemption accomplished, shows us that He is a better Savior than we ever are sinners.
Jeff Durbin-Acts 17:1-17-This week will mark my personal 30-year anniversary of going to minister the Gospel at the Mormon Temple in Mesa. During that time, I have had the privilege of giving the biblical Gospel to millions of Latter-day Saints, face-to-face, and through the platform that the Lord has given. God has blessed the proclamation of His Truth and countless Mormons have come to a saving trust in the true Christ. We live in Arizona and have quite a diverse local mission field. However, a large portion of the community that surrounds us are Mormons. These people are lost and are following a false Christ, a version of Jesus that does not exist and has no ability to save. My passion is to reach them with the Gospel, the only one that truly saves. I believe that love for the lost will cause us to cast of indifference for the state of their souls. I believe that a genuine love for Mormons will lead to boldness and an effort to reach them in whatever way the Lord grants us opportunity. I hope to encourage you, today. I want to encourage you with the Scriptures and with stories of His faithfulness. As I always say, "God blesses faithfulness." I hope and pray that God would bless us as a faithful church that will reach this large community around us, leading to the end of Mormonism and so many Mormons coming to know the One Who gives everlasting life.
Jeff Durbin-2 Timothy 3:1-8-Today, we are going to address some of the prevailing sins of men in the world and the church. God created man. When He created Him, He called it "good. It's good to be a man (as my friend Michael Foster has spoken and written about.) However, because of the fall, men have to deal with and face prevailing sins amongst men. My hope is to address what Scripture says about these sins and strengthen our resolve against them. God sanctifies us by His Spirit and through His Word. May today's message do just that and may we, as men, be the light of Christ to the world because of that sanctifying work.
Jeff Durbin-Titus 2:3-5-We are going to spend two weeks looking into some of the common and prevailing sins that men and women struggle with as men and women. This week, we are going to start with some of the common struggles of women that we see addressed in Scripture. We're going to start with women because my hope is to end with the need for men to take primary responsibility for dealing with the sins of both groups.May God us this short series to sanctify us both and make us more like our Savior!
-Proverbs 29:18-In our study of God's Book of Divine Wisdom we are now meditating upon the role that God's Revelation has in protecting and preserving, not only our lives, but the lives of those around us. When we hide or don't speak the Word of God, the Scriptures are clear, the world will fall apart. People throw off restraint when the Word of God isn't given.May our meditation upon this truth be used to embolden us and allow us to be salt and light so that people will give glory to God!
-James White-Revelation 21We look to the promises of Scripture about the fulfillment of God's great work of redemption in our study today. But our focus will not really be heaven and its joys, though we will surely make note of these truths. Instead, we will be doing a challenging study in how this text gives us a balanced, important witness to the doctrine of the Trinity and to the deity of Christ. We at Apologia Church take the Trinity seriously, and so today we will work to sharpen and hone our skills in understanding, and presenting, this beautiful truth.
-Jeff Durbin-Proverbs 16:33, 19:21, 21:1 and 21:30.The universe is busy. The world is busy. Life is busy. Everything is always moving. Sometimes it seems like a machine, smoothly running. More often than not, it seems like the parts are colliding and going off course. There are so many moments where it feels like the conductor has left his station and nothing is where it's supposed to be. That's what a fallen world feels like. Out of control. Out of place. However, Scripture tells us throughout, that God remains in control. He is the sovereign. He not only ordains every moment, He also sustains these moments and carries everything along to its intended purpose. This is wisdom. To know this and to live and rest under the shade of this truth.Soli Deo Gloria!
Jeff Durbin-Romans 5:8-We've been in God's Book of Divine Wisdom for some time. It has been such a blessing and a transformative experience for so many of us. Today, my heart's desire is to focus our minds on the glory and beauty of the Good News of God.A love of God's Wisdom can only come from a heart that has been changed and a relationship of peace with God. That can only come in one way: the Gospel. May God never let our hearts stray from a passion for the Good News. The Good News that God loves sinners like us.The Good News that He has reconciled us to Himself. The Good News of Eternal Life. The Good News that we now have peace. Eternal peace with the God Who is Love.Sola Deo Gloria!
We are continuing our study of the Book of Proverbs. Today, we see God's Wisdom that is testifying to what we see in the whole of Scripture: the goodness and blessing of God's Law.We live in a time with so many turning their eyes away from the goodness of God's Law.Unfortunately, both unbelievers as well as professing believers. Here in God's Wisdom, we see that God calls us to view His instructions in His Law in a different way. A way that leads to light and blessing. May God renew our minds and make us wise like our savior.
-Jeff Durbin--Proverbs 26:4-5- As we continue our study and meditation upon God's Wisdom From Above" we are now in The Lord's instruction on how to converse with the fool. It really is a gift to have God's instruction manual on how to answer someone who has abandoned God's ways in how they think and speak. Today; we will listen to the Lord's Word on just how it's done and provide a number of examples of how to be wise in our conversation with fools. The world is filled with a lot of them so this should be good!In the end, this is light and instruction on how to reason like the lord Jesus and to think and speak like Him.
-Jeff Durbin-Proverbs 24:23-26Today, we continue our study in the Book of Proverbs and are learning about God's call to speak the truth about the evil around us. We are called to abandon the commitment we have to our favorite faces (partiality) and to tell the truth about the evil or sin that we are presented with There are consequences for blurring the lines of what is actually true. Good ones andbad onesMay God create in us a humble boldness and we shine the light of His Truth into the world around us.

Have you been told that the ultimate hope for the Christian is to leave behind this world and our bodies and go into the "better" spiritual experience? Now, of course it is true that everyone who trusts in Christ and receives the gift of salvation through faith will die and be with Jesus (immediately). However, the Bible's story of victory for the future is that God is going to finally deal with death and we will spend eternity in a resurrected or renewed earth, with God, and in our resurrected and glorified bodies.

We are in a series now on Philippians. We are studying chapter 3, a famous section of Scripture, wherein the Apostle Paul talks about receiving a righteousness that is not his own, but, one that comes from God on the basis of faith. He even uses some strong words to show his detestation of those who would muddy the message of Life and he uses a very strong word to describe his own attempts at righteousness.

Since we have Christ’s example; because He became a man with humble obedience dying upon the cross for us we are called to obey God, to work out this salvation that Christ has secured with fear and trembling. And simultaneously as we work this salvation out with active participation we are to understand the source and strength of this working out, that God is the one who wills and works in us for His good pleasure.

The final message from the Olivet Discourse on the subject of the Great Tribulation from Pastor Jeff Durbin of Apologia Church. The modern church (in the West) has been heavily impacted by a view of the future that didn't exist before the 19th-century: Dispensational Premillennialism. Within this view is the idea of a rapture, followed by 7-years of tribulation (some are pre-trib, mid-trib, or post-trib), followed by a literal 1,000-year reign of Christ on earth. Many appeal to the Olivet Discourse to support their views on this. However, we need to ask the questions: What does Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 actually teach? Who would endure the "Great Tribulation", what generation would see "these things", and who was to be "left behind"?
-December 8, 2019-
Pastor Jeff teaches on the Great Tribulation and the Olivet Discourse. The section from this Sunday is about the Lord Jesus coming on the clouds. What was Jesus quoting from when He referred to this? When did the Lord Jesus teach that this would occur?
-December 1, 2019-
Pastor Jeff Durbin preaches in our series on the Olivet Discourse and the Great Tribulation. The Lord Jesus said that the end of the Age would be accompanied with the sun darkened, the moon not giving its light, and the stars falling from heaven. However, He taught that these things would happen during the lifetime of His listeners (before they all passed away). The question is: Did it happen? The answer is unquestionably: Yes. Watch as Pastor Jeff teaches from the Old and New Testament and demonstrates that the Lord Jesus was actually quoting from Isaiah (and others) in this section of Scripture. He is using language that was common for the prophets.

This is from our series in the Gospel According to Matthew. This is an often misunderstood section of Scripture that has been used in the creation of many aberrant religious groups and has been used as a source of criticism from many unbelievers and higher-critical scholars. When did Jesus say He was going to return in judgment? Where did He say this was going to take place? Why was He warning them of this?
Is this passage about the "end of the world" or the end of the Old Covenant "age"? As Christians, we all believe that Jesus is returning for the resurrection (1 Cor. 15). However, is this particular passage about that truth or is this about a local judgement upon His generation?

Pastor Jeff Durbin of Apologia Church teaches on the relationship between the Christian and the Law of God. Many people abuse the Law of God by falsely teaching that it can be used (in any way) as a means of getting justified before God. This is false and is refuted by Scripture. However, on the other end of the spectrum, there are those who teach that because we are saved by faith alone in Christ alone that the Law of God is irrelevant under the New Covenant. What does the Bible teach? This is Part 2 of Jeff's message on this.
-March 3, 2019-

You do not want to miss this powerful and important sermon from Pastor Jeff Durbin on the foundation of false religion. This message is from Apologia Church for our sermon series called "The Kingdom of God." We are in the Gospel According to Matthew in chapter 15. Jesus taught that what comes out of the mouth is from the heart. His confrontation with the leadership in His day went to the foundation of their problem: their hearts. If we are ever going to change we have to look into the basement of our lives. Go to the bottom. Only the Gospel can heal it.

-Jeff Durbin- December 10, 2017
What does the Bible teach us about what has the ultimate authority? In Matthew 15 the Lord Jesus is confronted by the religious leaders of his day because His disciples were not following the tradition of the elders. Jesus' response tells us about God's call on us regarding how to resolve conflicting claims. Jesus upholds God's Law-word as the standard by which we measure claims. During the time of the Reformation this principle was called Sola Scriptura: the Scriptures alone are the only infallible rule for faith and practice.
-Jeff Durbin- December 3, 2017
The sermon is part of our Kingdom of God Series and is from the text of Matthew 14. Jesus performed miracles of healing and of feeding his people followed by walking on water (and causing Peter to walk on water). What does this text teach us about Jesus? Many things. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
October 14, 2012 -Jeff Durbin-
Will the Gospel and the Church be defeated in history before Christ returns? Are we to expect the failure of the Gospel message in the world or did Jesus teach something different? Are we to anticipate that the Kingdom of God will fill the world or will unbelievers defeat the Kingdom before Christ returns?

-Jeff Durbin- September 17, 2017
The Bible's teaching on God's sovereign grace and choosing a particular people for Himself in Jesus Christ has always been a spot of controversy for humanists and a place of rest and hope for the redeemed. The Bible clearly teaches that the triune God chose to save a particular people for Himself through the redemption of the Messiah Jesus and through the regeneration of the Holy Spirit. God chose to save. God planned to save. God saves for His glory. God saves because of His eternal love and unfathomable grace.
September 23, 1012 -Jeff Durbin_
Will the Gospel and the Kingdom of God lose in history before Jesus returns? Did Jesus teach us to anticipate that the efforts of Christians laboring for the Kingdom would be all for a promised failure. Or do Jesus' parables of the Kingdom teach something different? This message is on the Parable of the Mustard Seed.

What is the significance of the ministry of John the Baptist? How does he create the bridge between the Old and New Testaments? -Jeff Durbin- May 7, 2017
This is an incredible message on the text of Matthew chapter 10. The Lord Jesus promises persecution and judgement on that 1st-century generation. Pastor Jeff Durbin delivered this sermon to Apologia Church and gives a very important connection between the Old Testament and the New. The Old Testament promised salvation, judgment, and a Kingdom. The Gospel According to Matthew is woven together in such a way as to maintain an intimate connection with Old Testament eschatology. Pastor Jeff makes some powerful observations that make the ministry of the Lord Jesus look beautiful.

Brothers and sisters, I am very excited to bring God's Word to you today as we continue to march through Matthew's Gospel. Specifically, we will be looking Christ's calling of Matthew to be his disciple, and the meal they soon shared together with the other Disciples and tax collectors. What can we learn from Matthew's Calling and Christ's response to the criticism of the Pharisees at this meal?

This message was preached by Jeff Durbin at Apologia Church. Pastor Jeff is teaching through the Gospel According to Matthew and is in chapter 9. The story is about the paralytic and Christ's forgiveness. This is an important sermon that gets to the heart of our greatest need that Jesus satisfies: forgiveness. Jeff Durbin Oct 9, 2016
We live in a culture that doesn't like it's sin pointed out. And in response, we've all heard post-moderns say, "Don't judge me, lest you be judged!" But does this verse really mean that we shouldn't judge? Paul Washer, in one of my favorite quotes, said, “People tell me judge not lest ye be judged. I always tell them, twist not scripture lest ye be like Satan.” I'm really excited to dig into this verse this afternoon and hopefully debunk some common misconceptions. I'm also going to talk about modern day Pharisaism and guarding the Gospel. I hope and pray that God uses me to bless and encourage you with the Word.

This is the first part of Jeff Durbin's series on the Kingdom of God relating to Divorce. March 6,2016
Your view of end-times matters. We begin our long awaited and anticipated series on the Messiah's victory in history: ESCHATON. We are humbled, honored, and excited to be given the privilege of walking you through the exciting conclusion of the history of humanity. Warning: much of what you have been told about end-times in our modern Christian culture might be wrong. Eschatology (the study of last-things) takes a prominent role throughout the Scriptures. What we believe about this matters- it will affect your life, your reading of Scripture, and the legacy you leave for the Kingdom. Get ready to have your world rocked! He shall have dominion. -March 24, 2013-
Pastor Jeff Durbin of Apologia Church/TV/Radio preached a sermon for The Kingdom of God Series. The Church is in the Lord Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and are now entering into the section where Jesus addresses specific laws.
This weekend's text was on adultery.
A NOTE FROM JEFF The Kingdom of God: Exceeding Righteousness
We've spent a considerable amount of time contemplating, unpacking, and exegeting the text of Matthew 5:17. It is my earnest prayer that our time in this section of Scripture has been transformative and edifying for the Saints and Apologia Church. Today, we will be looking at and listening to the Lord Jesus' statement about the righteousness of the Pharisees. What does He mean that our righteousness has to exceed the righteousness of those disciplined religious people? Is Jesus teaching moralism as a way to God? Is He teaching that only a stellar obedience to God's Law will avail before Him on the Last Day? I pray the truth we search out today will be a blessing to your life for now and eternity. Truthfully, this is where the whole message of what God does in the Gospel rests.
No King but Christ! Jeff Durbin Lead Pastor/Elder Sunday, November 22, 2015
We are now beginning a very controversial portion of the Sermon on the Mount. It is not controversial due to whether or not the Lord Jesus is sufficiently clear. No. The text presently before us is controversial due to the nature of the host of theological systems of thought we often bring to the text of God's Word. What was Jesus' attitude toward the Law of God? Does God do away with the Law He gave in the Old Testament? In what way is the Law of God fulfilled? Aren't Christians under grace? How are believers under the New Covenant supposed to relate to God's Law under the New Covenant? We hope to faithfully answer these questions and many more as we unpack this vitally important section of God's Word. My hope, as a pastor, is that God would use this study to transform us as a body and allow us to be used by Him to proclaim the excellencies of His Gospel and His Law. Soli Deo Gloria! We are continuing our exposition of the Gospel According to Matthew. We call this series: The Kingdom of God. Matthew's Gospel contains the repeated affirmation of the rule and kingship of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus comes on time and as planned. His coming is not a "plan B" in the redemptive purposes of God within history. With that said, we must remember that the Old Testament promised that God was going to do something in history that changed the shape of history, people, and the world... forever. The Messiah was to rule in history. This rule would be redemptive in nature: it was about salvation. This salvation would extend to the ends of the earth and would bring forth the light of God, justice, and the law of God (Isaiah 2, 9, 11, & 42). The Lord Jesus sits upon the Mount and begins to pronounce His blessings of divine happiness upon His people. The Beatitudes wrap up with something that ought to give us a moment or two of meditation and thoughtful reflection. We are the preservative of the world. We are the means of God's grace for the darkness scattering and fleeing once and for all from the world. This is big. This little section says something about God's purpose for the people of God in the world. He means to use us for something. The truth that Jesus saves sinners must never been relinquished or abandoned. However, the lie that Jesus simply saves sinners must be repudiated and rejected with horror. God is remaking the world in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the beginning of the New Creation. We are all new creations in Jesus Christ. God intends on reshaping the world through the means of His people: the church. How? Let's open His Word. Soli Deo Gloria! Jeff Durbin Lead Pastor/Elder Sunday, September 13, 2015
With the recent lawless kidnapping of Kim Davis for Christian beliefs, it’s important for us to understand the law of God and God ordained spheres of authority. God, in the Scriptures, gives us a full orbed worldview. This includes law, procedural law, case law, laws regarding civil magistrates, interposition, and more.
How are we to be salt and light in light of Kim Davis’ kidnapping? Jeff Durbin explains by starting in Matthew and then moving into Romans 13.

Today we are going to unpack the truths surrounding the Lord Jesus' promise of blessing upon those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Over the last couple of weeks I attempted to faithfully handle the biblical possibilities and meaning of the term righteousness in this verse. It seems unavoidably clear that the Lord Jesus' is speaking here of hungering and thirsting for true 'uprightness' or the righteousness that comes from a pure heart.
How do we live in light of this blessing? Have you ever struggled with doubt, discouragement, and depression in your walk with the Lord? How do you maintain a hunger and thirst when we often feel conflicted and even defeated?
Open the Word of the Living God. Let's seek His promises.

The Sermon on the Mount is the most popular sermon in the history of the world. In the beginning of the sermon, the Lord Jesus pronounces divine happiness (blessings) upon His people. He promises blessings upon His people for things that seem upside-down. Blessed are those who mourn? Blessed are the meek? Blessed are the persecuted? And in today's message: Blessed are the merciful. Seems out of place for many. What if we are wounded? What if we are abused? Doesn't God care about justice? Isn't God concerned with truth? How can Jesus pronounce divine blessedness upon those who are merciful and tell us that the mercy-ing ones are the ones who receive mercy? Open your Bibles and ask God to open your hearts and minds to this glorious truth.

This Lord's Day, we are going to explore God's Word about the subject of suffering for the cause of the Gospel. God calls us out of darkness and into His light. He then empowers us to live lives of obedience and delight in Him. The great joy we have set before us is to know God and to make Him known. I want to emphasize that: Joy. However, as we get on our beautiful feet to proclaim the Good News to the world we will inevitably be confronted with difficulty, persecution, and at times very serious suffering. How are we to walk through these moments? Let's get into His Word.

Gospel means "Good-news". In the Scriptures, it is referred to as Good-news of the Kingdom (Matthew 4) and God's Good-news (Romans 1). God is sovereign over salvation; down to every nut and every bolt of its accomplishment and its application. However, it's vitally important for us to remember that God uses the proclamation of the Gospel to bring His elect to Himself. We are the means of the grace of the Gospel when we proclaim it to the lost. God calls us, all of us, each and every one of us (Yes, you.), to bring the message of salvation in Christ into the very fabric of our daily lives. But, how do we do it? What do we say? Let's dig-in.

In the Lord Jesus' famous sermon on the mount, we have the promises of divine happiness upon the most unlikely (humanly speaking) of candidates. The poor, the mourners, and now, the meek. The promise of divine happiness upon the meek extends to a point that is very easy to miss. It's not that it is hard to miss. The Lord was not unclear or hiding His statements. We don't have to spend a few months in a seminary course learning how to translate Greek or about fancy systems of Biblical interpretation: Thank you, Professor Herman Newticks. That was a theological nerd joke for those of you paying attention. Jesus' statement was, and is, straightforward: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Inherit the earth. Did you catch it? Doesn't sound like what we're accustomed to hear- ing in our current context. That's why it's easy to miss. We can be so focused on es- caping this world, so focused on the evils around us, and so focused on what seems to be defeat all around us, that we can miss what is a clear and direct promise from the lips of our Savior: God's people will inherit the earth; not the wicked. Close your eyes. Take a breath. Meditate on that. Fix your eyes upon the Sovereign God Who controls the future and trust in His promises. The earth is the Lord's.

This week let us ponder the words of Jesus' Sermon. These are the blessings: Matt 5:1-12 Soli Deo Gloria!
(Apologies for the poor audio quality of the original recording) After spending a few days in Philadelphia at the Herald Society, I thought it would be a blessing to our community to share the message I preached at the conference. The men and women in attendance were bringing glory to God and testifying to how they were challenged by it. Note: the first 10-minutes of this message are missing. That does not detract from the sermon. Also, the audio itself is not superb, but, is still worthy to post.
By God's grace, I pray that God stirs us. Jeff Durbin Lead Pastor/Elder Sunday, October 26, 2014
(Apologies for the poor audio quality of the original recording) John the Baptist plays a significant role in the New Testament record. Many will be interested to know that John the Baptist was a well-known figure in the 1st-century outside of even the New Testament record. Flavius Josephus (a Pharisee and participant in the Roman vs. Jewish war) writes about John the Baptist's death at the hands of Herod. He says:
“Now some of the Jews thought that the destruction of Herod's army came from God, and was a very just punishment for what he did against John called the baptist [the dipper]. For Herod had him killed, although he was a good man and had urged the Jews to exert themselves to virtue, both as to justice toward one another and reverence towards God, and having done so join together in washing-” Antiquities 18.5.2 116-119
What is the significance of the John the Baptist figure in God's story? Why is it compelling that John the Baptist came preaching repentance and that he was the forerunner of Messiah? Why is it doubly significant that John the Baptist preached about the "Kingdom of Heaven" being "at hand".
I think the answer will anchor your heart to Jesus and might just transform your life and the world around you.

Matthew has prepared the ground. He has given us the marvelous announcement that the Davidic King had arrived. He had the right to the Messianic throne. He is the substance that all the prophecies were pointing to. The time had come. God was and is faithful.
As we open Matthew chapter 2, I want to dwell on and think through the powerful promise that is quoted by Matthew from Micah. We often miss the beauty of what Matthew is thinking about because we don't go and put our eyes on the actual text that is being quoted. Look at the rest of Micah's text:
And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. When the Assyrian comes into our land and treads in our palaces, then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men; Micah 5:4-5
And, this morning, we will celebrate this promise fulfilled. This morning we will talk about how God will use us in its continued fulfillment.

The Bible isn't a Hodge-podge of disconnected parts and pieces thrown together willy-nilly. The Bible is God's Revelation to the very image-bearers He placed in the world. The Bible is God's story. It is not only the very voice of God to mankind, it is the demonstration of His power in history, His immeasurable love and kindness, His mercy for sinners, and the unfathomable extent of His sovereign plan. That sovereign plan is over the macro and micro issues. It includes the whole story and the little bits in between. Part of that story is the story of Israel: a people chosen for God's own possession. And in Matthew chapter 2, we begin to see that Israel's story is actually the story of Jesus. Only, in Jesus, we have the fulfillment of what Israel (God's son) was supposed to be all along. In Jesus, we have the perfection of the image and light of God that humanity was expected to broadcast out into the world. Jesus' story is perfect. Jesus is the summary of what Israel was supposed to be. Matthew wants us to know. God kept His promises. He is in control. History is going where He wants it to go.

Tonight, we are going to witness the record of the covenant and promise keeping nature of our great and awesome God! Let's dig-in: 1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,[a] 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,[b] 8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos,[c] and Amos the father of Josiah, 11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel,[d] and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, 14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, 15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. Matthew 1:1-17 Jeff Durbin Lead Pastor/Elder Sunday, February 23, 2014
I am humbled and honored to begin our newest series at Apologia Church:
The Kingdom of God: An Exposition of the Gospel According to Matthew
God's people have been savoring the divine truths preserved for us in this book for 2,000-years. Think about that for a moment. We have the privilege of opening this treasure chest containing the story of the promised Messiah that our brothers and sisters drank deeply from long before us. Many of those in our spiritual lineage sealed their love for this book and their desire for you to know it with their own blood (in one way or another). That kind of thought causes me to pause and take a deep breath only to stare back at the page again in wonder. Sometimes I wonder how many sets of eyes scanned the text of Matthew. I sometimes wonder how many times certain passages were covered in tears. How many were tears of joy? How many tears dropped because despair was being lifted? How many tears dropped because someone approached the book and fell in love with Jesus for the first time and they painted these pages with salt? Only God knows how this book has been used. Only He knows what He intends to put into you as a result of committing yourself to owning the truths contained within its pages.
There is so much to say. There is so much to learn. I can only begin this series thanking God. Thanking Him for using someone like me to even speak from it. Thanking Him for the gift of its preservation. And thanking Him for what He is doing in our lives through this book to bring about the exaltation of the Messiah throughout the whole world. No King but Christ!
