An old lighthouse keeper, who lives with his daughter, tries to suppress the legend of a prehistoric amphibious reptile monster, even though he knows of its existence. However, when the monster begins attacking the quaint beach town of Piedras Blancas, people start losing their heads, literally.
We also get distracted by talking about the 1970's Shazam Saturday morning show and recent movies. When we run out of things to talk about, Rish regales us with his experience watching the 1987 John Cusack action comedy film Hot Pursuit.

- You will be assigned a story title and AI-generated image based upon a song title from the band Journey. This will be the basis and inspiration for your story. You will receive this assignment via email, and on a podcast episode on August 9th.
- You must submit your new original story by 12:00:00 AM Mountain Time on December 1, 2024
- Winners will be announced on the show and by email before January 1, 2025
- The 1st place story will be produced for audio publication on the podcast in 2025.
WORD COUNT: No word limit, but judges may tire while reading an overlong story.
STORY REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES:
- The story must be titled as assigned and be based on the AI-generated image you are given.
- Please write an original story based on inspiration from the assigned title and image. There is no way for me to enforce this, but the spirit of this contest is to provide a prompt for a new story.
- Preference for speculative fiction, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, and various combinations and sub-genre.
- Remember the 1st place winning story (possibly more) will be produced for the podcast, so we will be looking for stories that "work well in audio."

Bad Dreams - Valerian, a young spatio-temporal agent, chases a dissident from the year 2720 to 11th-century France and encounters the resourceful, and pretty, Laureline, who aids him in his mission.
The Empire of a Thousand Planets - Valerian and Laureline travel to Syrte the Magnificent, capitol planet of the Empire of a Thousand Planets. They are the first people from Earth to visit this system, but they soon get caught up on a revolution and face off against the mysterious Enlighteneds, a priestly order with great influence in the Empire.

One of the premier drama programs of the Golden Age of Radio, was subtitled "radio's outstanding theater of thrills" and focused on suspense thriller-type scripts, usually featuring leading Hollywood actors of the era. Approximately 945 episodes were broadcast during its long run, and more than 900 are still in existence.Ray Bradbury is the world’s greatest science fiction writer. Some may argue, including Ray himself, that he writes fantasy rather than science fiction. He once said that Fahrenheit 451 was his only true science fiction work. His stories may tells us very little about science, but a great deal about the netherworld of imagination buried deep within all of us. In addition to over 1000 short stories, several novels and a handful of plays; Ray Bradbury has written poetry and scenarios. He adapted the novel Moby Dick for the movies, and has seen several of his own stories made into motion pictures, as well as television and radio shows. - You will be assigned the four words on which to base your story by email, and for those who have already entered, by listening to this episode of the podcast.
- You must submit your new original story by 12:00:00 AM Mountain Time on May 1, 2023
- Winners will be announced on the show and by email by June 1, 2023
- Winning stories will be produced for audio publication on the podcast in 2023.
WORD COUNT: The story shall be between 7500 words or less in lengthSTORY REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES:
- The story must contain your four assigned words in a significant way.
- Please write an original story based on inspiration from the assigned words. Please don't stuff these words into a story you have already written. There is no way for me to enforce this, but the spirit of this contest is to provide a prompt for a new story.
- Preference for speculative fiction, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, and various combinations and sub-genre.
- Remember the winning stories will be produced for the podcast, so we will be looking for stories that "work well in audio".
CONTEST RESTRICTIONS: Please no splatter horror, grimdark, or explicit sexual content. Also please avoid coarse profanity (including Schlonz).
WHO WILL DECIDE THE WINNERS: A panel of volunteer judges.
PRIZES: 1st Prize: $20, 2nd Prize: $15, 3rd Prize: $5. All winning stories will be produced as a full cast audio production for the podcast.

Mind Webs was a 1970's series out of WHA Radio in Wisconsin that featured weekly semi-dramatized readings of science fiction short stories performed by Michael Hansen. It aired stroies by some of the genre's best writers like Norman Spinrad, Arthur C. Clarke, Gordon R. Dickson, and Ray Bradbury. Many of the readings were enhanced by music, periodic sound cues, and the occasional character voice, however they are not completely dramatized.

Poe Theatre on the Air is a production of the National Edgar Allan Poe Theatre. Each episode is an adaption of a different Edgar Allan Poe short story. While by-and-large faithful to the source material, the writers make sure to put their own spin on the stories. This largely relates to the framing device. The framing device is that you, the listener, are a guest at the asylum of Dr. Maillard. He has developed a radical new treatment to cure the mentally crippled, and he considers all of the inmates his children who have lost their way. Lights Out was one of the first radio series devoted mostly to horror and the supernatural, predating Suspense and Inner Sanctum. Versions of Lights Out aired on different networks, at various times, from January 1934 to the summer of 1947 and the series eventually made the transition to television. It featured two of the most creative writers at the time, Wyllis Cooper, and Arch Oboler.

Fredric Brown (October 29, 1906 – March 11, 1972) was an American science fiction and mystery writer. He was born in Cincinnati. He is perhaps best known for his use of humor and for his mastery of the "short short" form—stories of 1 to 3 pages, often with ingenious plotting devices and surprise endings. Humor and a somewhat postmodern outlook carried over into his novels as well.The famous pulp writer Mickey Spillane called Brown "my favorite writer of all time". Science fiction and fantasy writer Neil Gaiman has also expressed fondness for Brown's work, having his novel Here Comes A Candle narrated by the character Rose Walker in the collection The Kindly Ones of The Sandman. Brown also had the honor of being one of three dedicatees of Robert A. Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land.
X Minus One was a half-hour science fiction radio drama series broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958 in various timeslots on NBC. Initially a revival of NBC's Dimension X (1950–51), the first 15 episodes of X Minus One were new versions of Dimension X episodes, but the remainder were adaptations by NBC staff writers, including Ernest Kinoy and George Lefferts, of newly published science fiction stories by leading writers in the field, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Robert A. Heinlein, Frederik Pohl and Theodore Sturgeon, along with some original scripts by Kinoy and Lefferts.

2020 “JOURNEY INTO JOURNEY” WRITING CONTEST SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
CONTEST TIMELINE:
* You must declare your intention to submit a story by 11:59:59 PM Mountain Time on January 31, 2020
* You will be assigned your story title (Journey song title) on the show and by email on February 8, 2020
* You must submit your new original story by 11:59:59 PM Mountain Time on March 31, 2020
* Winners will be announced on the show and by email by April 30, 2020
* Winning stories will be produced for audio publication on the podcast some time in 2020 or 2021.
WORD COUNT: The story shall be between 2000 - 7500 words in length
STORY REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES:
* The story title must be the Journey song title assigned to you.
* You must include two phrases from the song lyrics somewhere in your story utilizing 4 words or more for each phrase.
* Please write an original story based on inspiration from the song title. Please don't tack this title onto a story you have already written. There is no way for me to enforce this, but the spirit of this contest is to provide a prompt for a new story.
* Preference for speculative fiction, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, and various combinations and sub-genre.
* Remember the winning stories will be produced for the podcast, so we will be looking for stories that "work well in audio".
CONTEST RESTRICTIONS: Please no splatter horror, grimdark, or explicit sexual content. Also please avoid coarse profanity (including Schlonz).
WHO WILL DECIDE THE WINNERS: A panel of volunteer judges.
PRIZES: 1st Prize: $25, 2nd Prize: $15, 3rd Prize: $5. All winning stories will be produced as a full cast audio production for the podcast.

Her short story collection, RETURNING MY SISTER'S FACE AND OTHER FAR EASTERN TALES OF WHIMSY AND MALICE, was published by Norilana Books and can be found on her website at eugiefoster.com. Her works have appeared in Realms of Fantasy, Interzone, Fantasy Magazine, Apex Magazine, Cricket, and Orson Scott Card's InterGalactic Medicine Show just to name a few.
Eugie died on September 27th, 2014 of respiratory failure related to Lymphoma at Emory University in Atlanta. Her story, ”When It Ends, He Catches Her,” published the day before her death, was nominated for the 2015 Nebula Award.
Laurice White is a recent theater graduate and long time theater student, and has read stories for Podcastle, Pseudopod, Journey Into..., and for John Joseph Adams and Hugh Howey on The End is Nigh and The End is Now, the first two volumes of The Apocalypse Triptych.

Ray Bradbury is the world’s greatest science fiction writer. Some may argue, including Ray himself, that he writes fantasy rather than science fiction. He once said that Fahrenheit 451 was his only true science fiction work. His stories may tell us very little about science, but a great deal about the netherworld of imagination buried deep within all of us. In addition to over 1000 short stories, several novels and a handful of plays; Ray Bradbury has written poetry and scenarios. He adapted the novel Moby Dick for the movies, and has seen several of his own stories made into motion pictures, as well as television radio shows. His writing has appeared in nearly every American magazine publishing quality fiction, and in over 100 anthologies of short stories.
Bradbury 13 was a series of radio adaptations of Ray Bradbury stories. The series was created by Michael McDonough, who also adapted the stories, directed and produced the programs. Bradbury 13 aired nationally on NPR Playhouse on over 250 radio stations. Ray Bradbury introduced each episode, and Paul Frees acted as the announcer of each of the thirteen stories. Original music was composed by Roger Hoffmann and Greg Hansen. Bradbury 13 has achieved a cult status with many fans over the years, especially with those who enjoy radio drama. The series won a Peabody Award and two Gold Cindy awards. (Wikipedia)

R.C. Anderson is an amateur writer that aspires to slightly above amateur status. His primary career is in the engineering / construction field, and many of his works reflect this. He was born in the early 80s, and raised in rural Arkansas, where his passion for stories was developed inside his mother's video store. In 1990, his family moved to California's central valley, where he lived and went to school for most of the next twenty years. In 2009, he moved outside of Portland Oregon, and currently resides in the city of Hillsboro. He lives with his girlfriend and four cats.

Gregory Bray was born and raised in Sacramento, CA where he still resides with his wife and son. For fun, he writes, plays hockey, geocaches, cooks, and chases around his son.
Gregory didn’t have an idea for this contest until a week before the deadline. Normally, all his story ideas come from his son, and are for picture books. He recalls this one came to him as he was falling asleep to Seinfeld. He woke up the next morning and there it was.

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 and became an American author, poet, editor and literary critic. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre, as well as the genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Poe died in 1849, in Baltimore, under mysterious circumstances, but he left us with a legacy of tales of wonder and woe, the marvelous and the macarbe.
The CBS Radio Workshop was an experimental dramatic radio anthology series that aired on CBS from January 27, 1956, until September 22, 1957. Subtitled “radio’s distinguished series to man’s imagination,” it was a revival of the earlier Columbia Experimental Laboratory (1931), Columbia Experimental Dramatic Laboratory (1932) and Columbia Workshop broadcasts by CBS from 1936 to 1943, and used some of the same writers and directors employed on the earlier series. The CBS Radio Workshop was one of American network radio's last attempts to hold on to, and perhaps recapture, some of the demographics they had lost to television in the post-World War Two era.

Fact Checker:
- It was Randy Quaid, not Dennis Quaid, who played Russell Casse in the first Independence Day movie.
- It was Jesse Usher, not Michael B. Jordon, who played Dylan Hiller in Independence Day: Resurgence.
- In the Doctor Who movie, Sylvester McCoy played the 7th Doctor (and also Radagast in the Hobbit movies). Paul McGann played the 8th Doctor.
- The Magnificent Seven were played by Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeier, with back-up from Haley Bennett.

Ray Bradbury is the world’s greatest science fiction writer. Some may argue, including Ray himself, that he writes fantasy rather than science fiction. He once said that Fahrenheit 451 was his only true science fiction work. His stories may tells us very little about science, but a great deal about the netherworld of imagination buried deep within all of us. In addition to over 1000 short stories, several novels and a handful of plays; Ray Bradbury has written poetry and scenarios. He adapted the novel Moby Dick for the movies, and has seen several of his own stories made into motion pictures, as well as television radio shows. His writing has appeared in nearly every American magazine publishing quality fiction, and in over 100 anthologies of short stories.
X Minus One was a half-hour science fiction radio drama series broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958 in various timeslots on NBC. Initially a revival of NBC's Dimension X (1950–51), the first 15 episodes of X Minus One were new versions of Dimension X episodes, but the remainder were adaptations by NBC staff writers, including Ernest Kinoy and George Lefferts, of newly published science fiction stories by leading writers in the field, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Robert A. Heinlein, Frederik Pohl and Theodore Sturgeon, along with some original scripts by Kinoy and Lefferts.

Ken Scholes grew up in a trailer outside a smallish logging town not far from the base of Mount Rainier in the Pacific Northwest. Baptized into Story at a young age, he fed himself on Speed Racer, Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants and Marine Boy sprinkled with a generous dose of dinosaur picture books. When he was thirteen, he read Bradbury's essay "How to Keep and Feed a Muse" and knew he had to be a writer. When he was fourteen, he started writing stories of his own and by fifteen, he had started his own Rejection Slip Collection.
After a long break away from writing, Ken returned to it after logging time as a sailor, soldier, preacher, musician, label gun repairman, retail manager and nonprofit director. He sold his first story to Talebones Magazine in 2000 and won the Writers of the Future contest in 2004. His quirky, offbeat fiction continues to show up in various magazines and anthologies like Polyphony 6, Weird Tales and Clarkesworld Magazine.
In 2006, his short story "Of Metal Men and Scarlet Thread and Dancing with the Sunrise" appeared in the August issue of Realms of Fantasy. Later that year, inspired and taunted by his friends and family to finally write a novel, Ken extended that story and Lamentation was born. Lamentation is the first in a five book series from Tor Books called The Psalms of Isaak. He has since also written Canticle, Antiphon, and Requiem in that series.
