Down Home Cajun Music- Khoury's 700 Series

This episode documents the final Cajun recordings on George Khoury's Khoury's label. The Khoury's label began in 1950 and lasted into the 1960's. The 700 series is basically 45 rpm releases beginning with Nathan Abshire's 701 in 1957. Khoury released 6 Cajun records on the 700 series as listed below. But by 1960's, he reissued several of his old 78 rpm recordings on 45 rpm. I've included two examples of those. To me, these are some of the greatest examples of Cajun music in the late 1950's. By the late 1950's the studios improved their sound and the pressings improved. This would lead to other labels releasing great Cajun music in the late 1950's into the 1960's. But Khoury's musical legacy is filled with absolute great music.

This episode is devoted to a overview of the recordings of Ervin Lejeune. By 1963, Ervin moved to Sulpher and met Jake Bertrand.
His first recordings were with Jake and the Calcasieu Cajuns in the late 1960's. By the early 1970's, he had some recordings with Goldband,
recording as Iry Lejeune Jr (Eddie Shuler's idea). During this time, he recorded with Jake's son, Robert Bertrand. We round up this episode

Down Home Cajun Music- Cajun Recordings on Decca Records (1934- 1939) Part One

By 1934, the Depression found the major labels not interested in recording Cajun music. Afterwards, only 3 labels would record French Arcadian music. One of them was Decca Records. The label held large recording sessions with Joe and Cleoma Falcon, Leo Soileau and Amede Ardoin early on. 1937 and 1939 found them recording groups such as Sons of Acadians and Jolly Boys of Lafayette. When Joe Werner left the Hackberry Ramblers, he recorded for the label as well. The labels Cajun output reflects a change in musical styles; one that would not return to it's roots until the mid 1940's.

Down Home Cajun Music- J' Ai Ete Au Bal

On this episode we explore the history of one of Cajun Music's most familiar songs. First recorded version was in January of 1929 by Bertrand & Pitre (Rabbit Stole The Pumpkin), later in the same year, Soileau and Robin recorded their take on the melody, (Je T'Ai Recontre Dans Le Brouillard). In the same year Babineaux & Guidry recorded yet another take on the melody, (J' Vai Jouer Celea Pour Toi). While many believe that Iry Lejeune recorded the first commonly known version of "I Went To The Dance", we know for certain that Joe Falcon's 1934 version is the first (Ne Buvez Plus Jamais). Later in 1938 J.B. Fuselier recorded his take on the song as "Chere Te Te". During the 1950's, Nathan recorded his version as "Point De Lou" and Lawrence used the melody for "Johnny Can't Dance". And from there it has continued on..

Down Home Cajun Music- Early Dewey Balfa Recordings 1951-1965

Starting off Season Four with one from the heart. This episode of the podcast is dedicated to the early recordings of Dewey Balfa . We heard recently there was a discussion of the life of Dewey and his music in Lafayette and sadly much of his early recordings weren't mentioned. We here at Down Home Cajun Music would like to correct that.

While he was known for the folk revival, Dewey Balfa also was a big part of the Cajun Honky Tonk sound of the dancehalls. Dewey made many recordings prior to his recordings with his brothers on Swallow. Dewey made his debut recordings in 1951 with Elise Deshotel on the Khoury's label. By 1955 he began recording with Nathan Abshire, a association that would last a lifetime. Dewey's vocals and fiddling were a big part of Nathan's band and Nathan would keep Dewey in the studio with him when he made the label transfer from Khoury's to recording for J.D. Miller. Later Dewey would record with the Sundown Playboys on the Goldband label.

Down Home Cajun Music- Folk-Star Records

On this episode of the podcast we look at Folk-Star Records. Eddie Shuler first started Goldband to promote his own band; the labels first releases from 1945 to 1951 were of his own. He started Folk-Star in 1949 to promote Iry LeJeune; as Eddie thought Cajun music to be "folk music". But like Goldband; it turned out to a label of a variety of music. The labels first releases were of Cajun, Hillbilly, Early Zydeco and Swamp Pop. After Iry's death, he recorded the first recordings of Sidney Brown, Boozoo Chavis and Cleveland Crochet on Folk-Star. He seemed to revive the Folk-Star label in the 1960's to promote artists such as Robert Bertrand, John Oliver and Phil Menard. The label lasted well into the 1960's and Eddie came up with even more labels to keep the jukeboxes filled.

Down Home Cajun Music- Khoury's Recordings

This week's podcast focuses on Khoury's record's label. George Khoury was a Turkish-American businessman from Lake Charles and record store owner. In 1947, he noticed a lack of Cajun music being recorded in south Louisiana and decided to open a business to compete with Ed Shuler’s Goldband Records and J. D. Miller’s Fais-Do-Do and Feature labels. His base of operations was just around the corner from Ed’s on Railroad Ave in Lake Charles. Khoury decided to create two labels simultaneously, Lyric and Khoury’s, in 1950. The label had such artists as Lawrence Walker, Nathan Abshire, Dewey Balfa, Maurice Barzas, Will Kegley, Atlas Fruge and Crawford Vincent to name a few. Khoury continued the label into the 1960's, creating a musical history rich of influential Cajun music.

Down Home Cajun Music- Miller's Merrymakers

While 1935 saw the rise of Cajun string bands recording, it wasn't until 1936 when one of the finer groups recorded. The Miller's Merrymakers were a string band led by Beethoven Miller, fiddler Jean Baptiste Fuselier and guitarist Preston Manuel. The group only had two sessions; one in 1936 and one in 1937. Beethoven left the band after their last session and JB took over the group. But their two sessions provide plenty of essential listening.

Down Home Cajun Music- Alex Broussard

This episode of the podcast focuses on the early recordings of Alex Broussard. The singer and songwriter from Maurice emerged on the recording scene in 1959 with recordings on La Louisianne Records. Alex had a musical ear and played a variety of instruments; his early recordings featured Doc Guidry and Happy Fats. On this episode of the podcast we feature a out of print Lp from the Clement Brothers. Recorded in 1984 as a tribute to Nathan Abshire who had passed away in 1981. The record was released on Kajun Records out of Crowley and to my knowledge hasn't been issued on cd or digitally.
Along with the Nathan covers, Terry and the band remake their first recordings on Feature Records. Recorded at Master-Trek Sound Recorders, the band includes Terry and his brothers, Purvis and Grant, along with Ronald Goodreau and Linus Simar.

Down Home Cajun Music- Doc Guidry

On this episode of the podcast, we focus on the recordings of Oran "Doc Guidry". Born in Lafayette, he started his career with Happy Fats. In 1939 he formed the Sons of Acadians and recorded for Decca. But Doc recorded with everybody, it would impossible to provide all the records he played on.
He recorded with Happy again in 1948, had a off session with Jimmie Davis's band in 1953 for Decca again. In 1961 he recorded again with Happy on La Louisianne. In 1966 he had a solo album on La Louisianne with a all-star band backing him, called "King of the Cajun Fiddlers"; titled rightly so. Long live the music and legacy of Doc Guidry.

Down Home Cajun Music- Octa Clark and Hector Duhon

On this episode of the Down Home Cajun Music podcast, we look at the music of Octa Clark and Hector Duhon.

Octa and Hector began playing music together first in 1928. Later they formed the Dixie Ramblers, but when Cajun went out of style and went toward country; Octa left the group. The duo would reunite in the 1950 and continue playing into the 1980's. This episode features some of the recordings they made in 1981 and 1982.

Down Home Cajun Music- Angelas LeJeune

One of the most obscure Cajun artists of the late 20's and 30's was Angelas Lejeune. As a teenager, As a teenager, Angelas was collaborating and interacting with both Amede Ardoin and Dennis McGee. Angelas developed into a visible figure on southwest Louisiana's dance circuit, sometimes performing five nights a week at house dance in and around the rural Pointe Noire community. In 1929, Angelas recorded during a Brunswick session that lasted from September 30th to October 2nd in New Orleans. Many of modern Cajun tunes can be traced back to some of the earliest recordings of his. His recordings feature fiddlers Dennis McGee and Ernest Fruge, providing some of the most intoxicating music of the era. For fans Iry Lejeune; this was his great uncle who he learned from.

Down Home Cajun Music - Aldus Roger 1963-1967

Aldus Roger had been recording since the early 1950's. By 1960, he retired but his retirement was short lived for in 1962, he was chosen by the State of Louisiana in the National Folklore Festival in Washington, DC. As a result of the honor, Roger was persuaded to reorganize his band. In 1963 he started recording for the La Louisianne label out of Lafayette. This period would be one of the most productive times of Aldus and the Lafayette Playboys career, recording for the label from 1963 to 1967.

On this episode we continue exploring the recordings of the most influential Cajun musicians after WWII. Iry Lejeune grew up listening to the sounds of early accordion players such as Amede Ardoin, Joe Falcon, Angelas Lejeune and Amadee Breaux. Those early influences were woven into the songs he created during the late 40's until his early death in the mid 1950's. Down Home Cajun Music - Rayne Bo Ramblers 1946 RCA Victor Session

At this point, Happy and the Rayne Bo Ramblers had stayed busy recording since 1935. In 1946, Happy and the band recorded their last recordings for a major label when they recorded this session for RCA Victor. 1946 seemed to be the end of an era and beginning of a new one. This session on Victor was one of the last Cajun string band recordings by a major record label. Not long afterwards, RCA Victor would abandon all things related to Cajun music, probably due to lack of sales nation wide. Independent labels were taking off and Happy would have to look at other outlets, which he did, with J.D. Miller's new independent label called "Fais Do Do" records. But this session has many great moments to enjoy, from "La Valse de Bosco" to the early rockabilly of "Cajun Boogie".

Elton Bee Cormier founded the Church Point Playboys in 1949. In the 1970's he wanted to record him and his band. But at that time , not many studios wanted to record Cajun music. He purchased a tape recorder and started to record musicians. Bee Records was born from his early recordings. This episode features many of the label's first recordings.

Down Home Cajun Music- Dennis McGee and Ernest Fruge: November 1930

Dennis McGee recorded his last pre war session of his own in November of 1930. Recorded in New Orleans, McGee brought along fiddler Ernest Fruge to accompany him on these recordings. The recordings suffered from poor record sales, due to the Depression, and were mostly forgotten. It has been said that these recordings did not become available to the public intil a year later. As far as the music they recorded; it was some of the most powerful music in Cajun history.

Down Home Cajun Music- Riverside Ramblers

The Riverside Ramblers were actually the Hackberry Ramblers recording by a different name. By 1936, the band was broadcasting from the Montgomery Ward store in Lake Charles and the station held a contest as to what to name the group. The store's most popular tire was the "Riverside" and some listener won with the suggestion of Riverside Ramblers. Under this name the group scored a country hit with “Wondering,”. From 1937 to 1938 The Riverside Ramblers recorded a mixed variety of originals and cover songs. These recordings revealed Luderin Darbone, with his lilting, lyrical fiddle style, as a leading creative figure of his day whose contributions have come to be considered historic.

Down Home Cajun Music- Hot Rod Records

After Virgil Bozeman's failed attempt at the Opera label, and then his finances for his O.T. label dried up, he moved back to San Antonio where he started the Hot Rod label with local record man Bob Tanner. There are only 7 known records made by this label; dating from 1949-1951, including songs by artists such as Nathan Abshire and Cliff LeMaire, Ernest Thibodeau, Wilson Granger and Clifton "Tan" Benoit. This label predates Tanner's Tanner TNT label which he would go on to create releasing material by Iry Lejune and Aldus Roger.

Down Home Cajun Music-Joe Bonsall and the Orange Playboys: Cajun Jamboree Singles Volume One

John “Tee Bruce” Broussard answered the telephone for Huey Meaux's Cajun show on KPAC Radio station and later at KOLE Radio. He then was able to start his own Cajun show on KOGT Radio in Orange, Texas. During the period of time between 1964 and 1982, he produced records on his own label “Cajun Jamboree Records”. Joe Bonsall had previously recorded for Goldband and Swallow Records before he joined the Cajun Jamboree label, recording for them from 1965 through 1970'

Down Home Cajun Music- Nathan Abshire 1973-1978

After recording for Floyd Soileau for the most part of the late 60's and early 1970's; in April of 1973, Nathan started recording for La Louisianne Records. In March of 1978, Nathan recorded a album for the Sonnet label with a great backing band of Sady Courville and Preston Manuel. In August of 1978, he recorded one more album for La Louisianne, which would be his last. On these recordings we get to hear Nathan record many classics he had not recorded before. On Chicago Blues, Nathan records his own version of Bosco Blues, he also records covers of Hip Et Taiau and Le Flames D'Enfer. He would pass away in 1981.

Down Home Cajun Music- Leo Soileau's Four Aces 1935-1936

Leo Soileau was the first Cajun fiddler to record back in 1928. After the Depression Leo returned to recording with a group in the string band style and recorded for Decca. While the group recorded songs in Cajun French; they also covered songs by the Carter Family and other country groups, as well as pop hits of the day. This episode features their English string band songs.
Leo's Four Aces was comprised of Leo along with Floyd Shreve and Bill (Dewey) Landry. It is speculated that some of these recordings features Tony Gonzales on drums.

DHCM- The Breaux Brothers 1929-1966

This episode we take a look at the various recordings the Breaux Brothers made from 1929 to their last in 1966.

Amadie and Ophy, along with their sister made their first recordings in 1929, where they recorded the classic, "Ma Blonde Est Partie" for Columbia Records. After the Depression the boys were called back to record in 1934 for Vocalion Records where they recorded the bulk of their recorded sides with their brother Clifford. They would not record again till the 1950's when Amadie and Ophy recorded for the Feature label. The last recording we have from them stems from a 1966 field recording. The Breaux's made a powerful impact to Cajun music; many of their songs live on today.

Down Home Cajun Music- Belton Richard Meets Aldus Roger

In the early 1960's Belton Richard was riding on the success of his first singles on Dago Redlich's Chamo label out of Crowley. Aldus Roger had just come out of his first retirement and was recording for La Louisianne Records. Someone had the great idea for Belton and Aldus to record together. So, Belton got behind the drum set and Aldus played accordion with Tony, Johnny, Rodney and Man Abshire tagging along. Together they recorded a great album in Crowley. Sadly it has never been released on cd. Here's my copy which I cleaned up the best I could.

Down Home Cajun Music- Floyd LeBlanc

On this episode, we celebrate the music of Floyd LeBlanc. The Mermentau born Cajun fiddler started off recording as a member of the Oklahoma Tornadoes in 1947. Floyd released his first records on the Opera label in 1948. In 1949, he recorded for Virgil Bozeman's O.T. label. After that he retired from playing and recording, returning in 1967 to record for J.D. Miller. This collection rounds out his recording output from those years.

Notes on the recordings:

Aldus recorded for the Acadian Artists label in either the late 60's or early 70's. Acadian Artists was owned by Robert Webb out of St. Martinville and only had 3 releases; two by Aldus and one by Tee Denise.
Erwin recorded this with Jake Bertrand and the Calcasieu Cajuns in the late 60's. The song also feature Atlas Fruge and Tan Benoit. Buck Records was a early label of Clinton "C.E." Diehl out of Jennings.
Wayne Hebert recorded this record in 1969 for C.E. Diehl's Circle D Records. It is one of the three records he ever made.
While Lanor wasn't a small label; this was a private custom series they put out. Ernest Thibodeaux was a original member of the Pine Grove Boys. This custom record was recorded in 1982 with Danny Shuff on accordion.
Jake Broussard and the Midnite Ramblers recorded this record in 1972 on the Kajun King label.
We featured Charlie Broussard's other Cora B on the first episode. Here is his first 45 on the Cora B label recorded in the 1980's.
Abe Manuel probably recorded this as the same time as the other Tribute 45. One can assume JD Miller put this out, as it was recorded at Modern Sound Studios.
Theotis Denise recorded as Tee Denise. I have tried for several years trying to find out who he was but have had little success. He recorded is record in 1960's. Tee Denise also played with Happy Fats.
Ronnie Fruge recorded this record in 1976 for C.E. Diehl's Circle D Records.
The flipside of one of Aldus's Acadian Artists 45. He had recorded KLFY Waltz previously for La Louisianne in the late 1960's.

Down Home Cajun Music- Independent Cajun Labels on 45 rpm: Volume One

This episode focuses on some of the releases from smaller, independent labels to come out of south Louisiana from 1950's to the 1980's. With the recording advancements of the time, many of these smaller labels started recording many local artists. Some of these records were put out by the artists themselves; bypassing a recording contract or studio fees and selling them their selves. Many of these labels aren't as well known as some of their contemporaries of the time such as Swallow and Goldband; but the music was equally as exciting.

Notes on the recordings:

The Marie label was started by Ed Credeur and featured Issac Leger and the Country Cajuns. This one record seems to be the only release on the label. Recorded in 1975.
We know of other releases on the Pitre Ford label, but they are not as good as this one. I haven't found any info on Addie Guillory. These Pitre Ford releases seem to be promotional items for the Pitre Ford dealership out of Eunice. This release by Addie Guillory and the Grand Prairie Playboys was recorded sometime in the 1960's.
Ed Credeur shows up again this time as part of Jesse Lege's Jeff Davis Ramblers. Circle D Records was one of the many labels to come out of Jennings and was ran by Clinton "C.E" Diehl. Recorded in 1987.
Charlie Broussard recorded one record in the late 40's on the Opera label and didn't show back up on record till 1980's. He recorded two records for the Cora B label then.
Dalton Alleman recorded this track at his home in the 1960's with Shorty Sonnier. While the Belle label is a mystery; we know La Louisianne helped get the record pressed.
The Big D label was ran by Richard Duplechian out of Lake Charles. Dillard Duplechian and his Louisiana Travelers recorded 3 records for the label in the mid 1960's. For the recordings, they used Goldband Studio.
While Rufus Thibodeaux had recorded a album with songs of Harry Choates in the 1970's; this 45 on the Tribute label seems to be the work of JD Miller as it bears his Jamil publishing name on it.
Adam Hebert recorded two Cajun 500 releases in the late 50's. This 45 was recorded at JD Millers studio and put out by Adam.
Jimmie Choates was a cousin to Harry. Jimmie recorded for JD Miller, George Khoury and Eddie Shuler from 1948 until the mid 60's. He recorded this track on the O'Day label in 1967.
Milfred Simon recorded this track on the Circle D label in the 1970's and features Blackie Fruge on fiddle.
This Balfa Brothers track was recorded in late 1970's and features Bill Keith on banjo and Nathan Abshire on accordion. As for the Rocky Road label almost nothing is known.

Down Home Cajun Music- The Clement Brothers

Terry Clement grew up in a musical family. He and his brothers started a band, modeling their style after their hero; Nathan Abshire. In the mid 50's they recorded one record for JD Miller's Feature label; "Te Maurice" and "Diggy Liggy Lo". As rock and roll became popular, they recorded not only Cajun French recordings for Miller, but rock and roll sides as well. Their recordings from 1960- 1961 are a mix of these styles. They didn't record again till 1984 when they deceided to record a tribute album to Nathan Abshire.

Down Home Cajun Music- Lionel Cormier & The Sundown Playboys

Formed in 1947, The Sundown Playboys were the musical journey of the Lionel Cormier family. The group recorded for JD Miller's Feature label in 1951 and didn't record again till 1956, this time with Goldband records. For the 1956-1957 recordings, Dewey Balfa replaced Wallace Toucet on fiddle, but Wallace was back for the 1959 Goldband recordings. On their 1960's recordings, they returned to recording for JD Miller on his Cajun Classics label, but during these years original member Howard Mire was replaced with Darrell Higginbotham. The group's last recording with Lionel was done in 1969. Sadly, Lionel passed away in 1971, with a new era of the Sundown Playboys to emerge afterwards.

Down Home Cajun Music- Leo Soileau Anthology 1928-1937

Leo Soileau was one of the pioneer artists of recorded Cajun music. He was the first Cajun fiddler to record starting in 1928 and had a recording career that lasted until 1937. He made more than 100 recordings during these years and many of the later ones have not been reissued. Along his with Cajun recordings, Leo also recorded a lot of blues and some jazzy numbers. His influence is undeniable, as he influenced fiddlers like Dewey Balfa and Harry Choates.

In his later recordings, he adapted with the times and recorded country, string band, blues, jazz and pop tunes. Here is a retrospective of the recording career of Leo Soileau.

Down Home Cajun Music- Harry Choates: Gold Star Recordings 1946-1950

While our previous episode on Harry Choates focused on his last recordings; this episode goes back to the beginning with his first recordings for Goldstar in 1946. While Harry had been a sideman for groups such as the Rayne Bo Ramblers and Leo Soileau; he steps out on his own with Bill Quinn and Gold Star Records. With these recordings Cajun music was introduced to the mainstream and the genre was revitalized.

Lawrence Walker began his recording career in 1929, when he recorded some early sides for the Brunswick label. By the mid-thirties he recorded for the Bluebird label, then he returned to recording in 1950 for the Khoury's label. By 1955, the label faded out as 45rpm records were coming in. Lawrence recorded for Floyd Soileau's early labels then started recording for La Louisianne and ended his recording career with them. Here's Lawrence's complete output from 1957-1962.

Down Home Cajun Music- Sons of Acadians 1939

Sons of Acadians were formed by a team of Lafayette area musicians in 1939 to capture the sounds of the popular music coming from the radio. Made up of cousins, Oran "Doc" Guidry on fiddle, Nason Guidry on upright bass, and Sidney Guidry as guitarist and vocalist, they teamed up with either steel-guitarist Roscoe Whitlow or steel-guitarist Francis "Red" Fabacher and began playing night clubs in Rayne.

Decca Records wanted the group to take hillbilly and swing songs and convert them to french songs. So the group travelled to the Rice Hotel in Houston on September 5, 1939 and recorded covers of Western Swing and Jazz classics along with Doc Guidry's original; "Aux Balle Chez Te Maurice". This one session would be their only recording output. While only a couple of the songs have been reissued; here is the entire 1939 session from the Sons of Acadians.

Down Home Cajun Music- Early Lawrence Walker 1929-1935

While he is better known for his later recordings on Khoury's and La Louisianne Records, Lawrence Walker's first recordings were made in 1929 with his brother Joseph Elton, recording one record for the Brunswick label. Lawrence would not record again till 1935, it was then they he recorded 3 records for the Bluebird label during the string band era. Lawwrence would also team up with Tony Alleman to record one record for Bluebird at the same session.

Down Home Cajun Music- Amede Ardoin & Dennis McGee Part One

This week we are coming up on the anniversary of Amede and Dennis's last recordings together in 1934. On this episode we reflect back to their first recordings, starting in 1929 and ends in the middle of their 1930 recordings. Their music represents some of the most intense music ever produced out of the pre war era. Their style was unmatched, and their music went on to influence Cajun music even up to today. Any Cajun song you hear today, more than likely stems from a Amede Ardoin song.

Down Home Cajun Music- Hackberry Ramblers 1935-1938

The Hackberry Ramblers started playing together in 1933. They were the first band to combine Cajun music with country music, sung in English. Besides country music, they played western swing, blues, traditional jazz standards, a wide range of popular songs. They were also the first group to use amplification to boost their sound. This episode features some of their early recordings; some which have not been reissued.

Down Home Cajun Music- Cajun Recordings on Paramount Records

Paramount Records was well known for their recordings of country, blues and jazz. But they also recorded Cajun music at three sessions. This episode features recordings from those three sessions.

By 1929, Paramount Records had taken notice of the success of Cajun artists on Columbia, RCA and ARC. Soon, they too were scouting musicians from south Louisiana to record. The first session was in January on 1929 and featured accordionist John Bertrand and guitarist Milton Pitre.

By the time the records had come out Milton Pitre had been shot and killed in a dispute over a woman. So for his second session in March of 1929, he brought along a guitarist from Acadia Parish, named Roy Gonzales and his son Anthony.

For the third session in July of 1929, Roy Gonzales returned along with the duo of Leo Soieau and Moise Robin. Fiddler Leo Soileau had lost his original accordion player, Mayuse LeFleur, when he too was killed. He returned to recording with Moise on this session for Paramount.

After these sessions, the label didn't pursue any more Cajun artists. Soon after after the Depression the label would be folding up. John Bertrand along with Roy Gonzales would not record again. Leo Soileau would keep busy recording well into the late thirties.

In 1962, Belton and the Musical Aces recorded for Redlich's Chamo label out of Crowley. These first recordings the group did for the label were recorded at the local radio station, KSIG in Crowley. J.B. Fuselier was a popular Cajun fiddler during the 1930's and 1940's. He first started recording with Beethoven Miller's group, Miller's Merrymakers and soon was leading the band under his name. Even during this time, J.B. would bring his accordion to dances and play it. He is credited by many musicians to bringing the accordion back in style. After WWII, Fuselier joined with Iry LeJeune and the two ruled the dance hall circuit until 1955 when LeJeune was killed and Fuselier severely injured when hit by a car. Despite his injuries, Fuselier never stopped playing and recorded a number of sides for Goldband in the 1960s.

Down Home Cajun Music- Rayne Bo Ramblers 1935-1941

Leroy "Happy Fats" Leblanc started off his recording career in 1935 with the Bluebird label with his group, The Rayne Bo Ramblers. The group continued recording all through the pre war era for the label recording many great classic songs, embracing the musical styles of the era. Happy had a good ear and surrounded himself with many great musicians through the years, including Nathan Abshire, Doc Guidry, Harry Choates and Papa Cairo to name a few. Out of all the Cajun string bands to emerge from the 1935 sessions, the Rayne Bo Ramblers never seem to get the attention they deserve. This episode focuses on the groups early recordings from 1935-1941.

DHCM- Andrew Cormier and the Rambling Aces: Early Recordings

Andrew Cormier and his Rambling Aces were a driving force in Cajun music; and the kings of the dancehall. Andrew was originally from Church Point, but moved to East Texas, and with his band, the Rambling Aces; had the crowds following him. A accordion player with a great style, who, in Marc Savoy's words; had a "joie de vivre" Here are some of their early recordings from 1958 thru 1962.

Down Home Cajun Music- The Sugar Bees

Cleveland Crochet first recorded as The Hillbilly Ramblers in 1954, recording for Eddie Shuler's Folk Star label. This group was different than the later line up with the exception that Charlie Babineaux was on guitar. It wasn't until 1957 when Cleveland got the lineup right when he recorded for George Khoury's Lyric and Khoury's label. Joining him this time was Vorris "Shorty" LeBlanc on accordion, Jay Stutes on steel guitar, Charlie on guitar and Clifton Newman on drums. In 1960 they recorded "Sugar Bee" for the Goldband label and soon changed their name to "The Sugar Bees". The group recorded for Goldband until 1963 and sometimes used other musicians such as Rufus Thibodeaux, Abe Manuel and Benny Martin among others. The group split up in 1965 when Shorty LeBlanc passed away.

By 1958, the recording career of Nathan Abshire and the Pine Grove Boys with Khoury's was coming to a end. Knowing Nathan Abshire could still sell records, J.D. Miller quickly signed him to a contract and had the band in his studio in Crowley to record. He recorded on Miller's KAJUN label from 1960-1964 with his new band that consisted of Dewey Balfa, Junior Benoit, Thomas Langley, Will Kegley, Cleveland Deshotels, Darius LeBlanc and Robert Betrand. With this band and Miller's studio production, we have some of Nathan's best recordings.

Down Home Cajun Music- Joe & Cleoma Falcon 1936-1937 Part One

By 1936, Joe and Cleoma's group consisted of themselves and family friend Moise Morgan playing the fiddle. They recorded two sessions in 1936 and another two in 1937. Their original songs were losing popularity and they felt the pressure to release more music, including popular radio tunes. Their last recording session was December 15, 1937. Instead of Morgan on fiddle, they brought along Cleoma's brother Clifford for the session. It seems by 1937, they were done, they were tired of the recording buisness and had enough work to keep them busy locally. They husband and wife duo were the first to record in 1928 and had kept busy recording for almost ten years.

DHCM- Joe and Cleoma Falcon 1934 Part One

While Joe and Cleoma had recorded in 1928 and 1929, the Great Depression had halted any more recordings by them. In 1934, the Falcons did two seperate recording sessions. In August of 1934, they recorded for the Bluebird label and in December they held another session for Decca records. Their 1934 recordings proved to be more prolific and lead to more recording with both labels. These two sessions would be their last until 1936.

Down Home Cajun Music- Alley Boys of Abbeville

In 1939 Vocalion Records was looking for Cajun French bands to record at their first field recording session in Memphis. The Alley Boys (Sidney Guidry, Murphy Guidry, Maxie Toutch and Frank Maihes) paid $125 dollars for a taxi to drive them to Memphis for a recording session on June 30, 1939. The sixteen sides they recorded that day resulted in one of the best sessions in Cajun music.

Down Home Cajun Music- Mosquitoes and Moonshine 1935-1938

After the Great Depression, Cajun music returned to being recorded, but it was string bands that dominated with the fiddle replacing the accordion. Cajun musicians mixed their traditional music with pop music, country, western swing and jazz. This era would last until the mid forties, but the period leaves us with some great recordings.

Down Home Cajun Music- Austin Pitre 1949-1956

Before his well known recording career with Floyd Soileau, Austin Pitre's recording career started with a one-off recording that was put out by 4 Star Records around 1949. The next year found him releasing records on the Crowley based label, Feature Records. He released two 78's with the label and didn't record again until the late 1950's. Then he returned on a vanity label released by JD Miller called French Hits. He released two records for that label as well.

In 1928, a couple from Rayne made the first Cajun recordings for Columbia Records. These recordings were a success and led to more Cajun artists recording for different labels and lead to a new genre of music being recorded. Many of the songs have carried on throughout the years. This episode documents their first recording session on April 27, 1928 in New Orleans for Columbia Records. This year marks the 93rd anniversary of these recordings.

Down Home Cajun Music- Delma Lachney and Blind Uncle Gaspard Complete Recordings Part Two

We continue on with Lachney and Gaspard's recorded output on this episode. With the first two songs we complete their first session in Chicago. "Marksville Blues" is one of the most compelling numbers Gaspard recorded along with "Sur Le Borde De L' Eau". The duo travelled to New Orleans for their second session. After this session the Depression hit and they didn't record again sadly. But by the time labels started recording Cajun music again in 1934, it seems we lost much of the originality of early Cajun music. These recordings offer us a window into a time when this music existed.

Down Home Cajun Music- Delma Lachney and Blind Uncle Gaspard: Complete Recordings Part One

One of the most fascinating duos to record in the early era of Cajun recordings was Delma Lachney and Blind Uncle Gaspard. Their recordings sound out of this world; archaic and raw. Their music is of a earlier tradition of dance and ballad songs that was older than the music we get from the other Cajun music recorded in 1928 and 1929. They were from the Marksville area, which consisted of early colonial French settlers. They recorded two sessions in 1929, before the depression hit. Their music gained interest after "La Danseuse" was included on the highly influential collection from Harry Smith called the Anthology of American Folk Music. This first set documents their first recordings in Chicago in 1929.

By 1950, it had been 15 years since Lawrence Walker had been in a recording studio. While the major labels were no longer interested in recording Cajun music, many independent labels started recording it. One of the independent labels that formed in 1950 was Khoury's. Down Home Cajun Music- KAJUN Records Part Two

KAJUN Records returned in 1973. But J.D. Miller served only as advisor to these recordings, with his son Mark Miller handling the recording process during these years. KAJUN records continued releasing 45's well into the late 80's. As compact discs made their way into the 90's the label ceased vinyl releases. From this era we get early recordings of Wayne Toups with Camey Doucet, great recordings from Joe Bonsall, Blackie Foriester, Nolan Cormier and recording with him since the beginning; Happy Fats. As for the legacy of J.D. Miller; he released Cajun music for over 40 years out of Crowley.

Down Home Cajun Music- Iry LeJeune

Iry LeJeune grew up learning to play accordion from a family member; Angelas LeJeune. He used the same bluesy, soulful style that Amede Ardoin had used in the 1920's. The following mix is selections from the original 78 rpm records. Of interest is the first release of "Grand Nuit Especial" with the unedited ending. Also on this mix is version one of "Duraldo Waltz".

After a brief haitus, the 1970's found new labels emerging out of Crowley. In 1973, Bayou Classics followed the Cajun Classics and KAJUN labels. Some of the artists that recorded for this Miller label had recorded previously with him, such as Bobby Leger and Happy Fats. The Bayou Classics label also featured the first solo recordings of Wayne Toups. We also get one of the last recordings of Will Kegley.

There were a handful of great recordings from JD Miller's Cajun Classics that didn't get issued on 45 rpm at the time. Luckily we get some of them on a rare Cajun Classics lp that Miller released in the late 1960's. Also Flyrite Records released a lp some years later with some outtakes and alternate takes. From these recordings we hear Floyd LeBlanc do his take on "Jole Blon", some unreleased Robert Bertrand, Moise Robin makes a recording appearance after serving jailtime and we get some Nathan Abshire outtakes.

Continuing on with J.D. Miller's Cajun labels. Miller's Cajun Classics were back in 1967. Why the four year gap in the label's output? That remains unknown. But during these years we get some great recordings from Floyd LeBlanc and some other Miller regular recording artists. After 1969 Miller would stop using the Cajun Classics label and a new label would take its place.

Next in JD Miller's Cajun labels was KAJUN, which started in 1960. The label first seemed to be a outlet for JD's newest artist he was recording; Nathan Abshire. The recording affair left Nathan unhappy with Miller's production and he left in 1963. The label's output ended with a few more artist's recordings. Down Home Cajun Music- Cajun Classics Part 1

Continuing on with Cajun labels J.D. Miller started. After he stopped recording Cajun music on his Feature label in 1955, he started up two new labels devoted to Cajun recordings in 1959. In that year he started the Cajun Classics label and signed Nathan Abshire after he left the Khoury's label. Many of the other artists that appeared on this label had recorded for Miller before. In 1964 after only a couple of releases, Miller stopped releases on Cajun Classics, only to revive the label a couple years later. This set collects one side from each of the label's releases from 1959 and 1964.

While the 1950's and 1960's found the up rise of many independent labels, the first one in Louisiana devoted to Cajun music was started by J.D. Miller. Starting in 1946, J.D. started his first label, Fais Do Do. Over the next couple of episodes, we will devote episodes of the podcast to labels Miller created for Cajun music.

Down Home Cajun Music- A Fais Do Do Series 1947-1955

Starting in the late 1940's, J.D. Miller starting recording Cajun French music in Crowley. He first started the Fais Do Do label, there he recorded Happy Fats and Doc Guidry, Lee Sonnier, Jimmie Choates and others. He followed with his Feature label where he recorded Amadie Breaux, the first recordings of the Sundown Playboys, Aldus Roger and Pee Wee Broussard. J.D.'s labels were the first independent Cajun labels in Louisiana giving many artists a platform to record at. He continued recording Cajun French music till around 1955, then shifted his focused on country and blues. His first labels would be some of the many that he started.

Down Home Cajun Music- Percy Babineaux and Bixy Guidry

The recordings of Percy Babineaux and Bixy Guidry are a treasure, but somewhat lost in time. The duo's recordings are among the most obscure Cajun recordings from 1929. They recorded in New Orleans in 1929 for Victor, and their last recording was issued on Bluebird in the early 1940's. Their haunting recordings are overshadowed by other artists of the time, sadly. Of special note, their recording of "J'vai Jouer Pour Toi" was the original version of "J'Ai Ete au Bal". Also their "Vien A La Maison Avec Moi" became what is known as the "Kaplan Waltz". Their recordings can be found on the Tompkins Square cd- "Let Me Play this for You".

You don't have to like just Cajun music to appreciate the record collection and research of Ron Brown. His collection and devotion to research go beyond just that. Although I talk to him on a regular basis; I felt it was important to document and discuss his research and collection of Cajun music. Robert Bertrand was a great fiddle player and singer. He left behind a impressive discography as a sideman and on his own. He recorded from 1958 until his early death in 1974. The episode provides a overview of early recordings done by Robert; especially those that features his vocals.

Dennis McGee recorded early on from 1929 till 1934, recording many classic Cajun fiddle songs. After 1934 he didn't appear on record again till the 1970's. Down Home Cajun Music- Marc Savoy: Early Recordings

Marc Savoy first met Andrew Cormier and the Rambling Aces in 1964 when saw them at the Rodair Club. He struck up a friendship with them that night. From 1964 to 1966 he made several recordings with the Aces and others on Huey Meaux's Crazy Cajun label. This episode features some of those great recordings.

"Pappy" purchased Harry Choate's masters from Goldstar in 1955. He began re-releasing Harry's Goldstar recordings on the his Starday and D labels afterwards. Some of these were leftovers from the Goldstar sessions and others were old titles that had been renamed. By 1950 Harry's Melody Boys had broken up and he soon started recording for Macy's with a new set of musicians. The last track is from 1951, from what was Harry's last session for Bob Tanner's Allied label. He would pass away on July 17th of 1951.

Down Home Cajun Music- Chuck Guillory : 1948-1987 Recordings

Murphy "Chuck" Guillory was one of Evangeline Parishes most popular Cajun string band fiddlers of the 1950s. He recorded early on in 1948 for Colonial and Modern before recording J.D. Miller's Feature label in 1950. After the breakup of Harry Choates' Melody Boys, Guillory attracted two of his biggest sidemen in the industry, Curzy "Porkchop" Roy and steel guitar player Julius "Papa Cairo" Lamperez. His early group featured Preston Manuel as well. He retired in 1958, stopped recording and went into the grocery business in Mamou for many years. In the 1980's he reformed the group and recorded for the Arhoolie label. This episode features some of those great recordings.

Down Home Cajun Music- Joe Bonsall: Goldband Recordings Volume 1
While Joe Bonsall's Cajun Jamboree and Swallow recordings have been well documented; his Goldband years have not. Joe and the band recorded for Goldband in 1962 and 1963 before recording with any other label. Here they recorded some great raw numbers showcasing the the band at the time. Joining Joe on these recordings were Bobby Caswell, Wilson LeJeune, Ivy Dugas and Hayward Doucet.

Sidney Brown recorded for Eddie Shuler from 1955 to 1960 and then afterwards he recorded one record for Swallow records. Early Cajun Honky Tonk 1948-1950

With the success of "Jole Blon" and "Pine Grove Blues", more Cajun artists started to record. They mixed their Cajun French with driving rhythm and steel guitars to create a new style of Cajun Honky Tonk played though the dancehalls. In this mix of early recordings we explore some of the early artists and some rare recordings. After 1950, the dance hall scene exploded with new artists and record labels releasing this music.

1946-1948 The Return of Cajun Music

After World War II, soldiers returning home wanted to hear the music of their youth. While the output of recorded Cajun music in the early 1940's was slim; by 1946 Cajun music returned by way of the birth of independent labels. Among those were Bill Quinn's Gold Star, JD Miller's Fais -Do -Do, Bennie Hess's Opera, and Eddie Shuler's Goldband and Folk-Star label. This was the start of a new era for Cajun music, as the 1950's brought around a new resurgence.

As music changed from accordion-led duos towards string bands in the mid 1930s, Joe Werner scored a series of recording sessions with both RCA Bluebird and Decca Records. First with the Hackberry Ramblers, then with Joe Werner and the Ramblers, Joe's Acadians and the Thibodeaux Boys. These groups, led by Joe himself, recording as often as he could with whomever he could find to play with at the time.

In 1935 Bluebird Records recorded a massive amount of Cajun recordings. Back from the Depression, the style shifted more to string band and this year give us sets the style for the next couple of years. 1935 gives us our first recordings of Nathan Abshire, The Rayne Bo Ramblers and the Hackberry Ramblers. Nathan recorded for George Khoury's label from 1951 to 1958 issuing some monumental recordings for the label. For the 51-53 sessions, radio stations were used to record the songs. In the mid 1930's Cajun musicians were adapting to the more modern string band sound. Many of the groups in south Louisiana were traveling to Dallas to audition to the labels; The Jolly Boys of Lafayette were one of them. They recorded one session in 1937 and along with Joe Falcon, they were one of the last groups to record Cajun music with a accordion until the 1940's.

This episode features Lee Sonnier of Crowley. He was the first Cajun to record with the accordion following World War II. His music was the earliest examples of the Cajun Honky Tonk era to come. While his music has been overlooked sadly, we hope to shed some light on him with this episode.

On this first episode, we go into old songs that have evolved into newer songs. Betrand and Pitre's "Cousinne Lilly" being used by Adam Hebert almost 30 years later is a good example. The Segura Brother's "Mosquito.." later became a Nathan Abshire classic. A reoccurring theme in Cajun music, but it's interesting to hear where the songs originally came from next to the later versions.
