BridgeEurope Podcast is a place to meet, discuss, debate, and talk to people who draw bridges between political perspectives. We cover all kinds of topics and invite experts on important social and political issues.
Founded in 2016 in Berkeley, California during the US presidential election campaign, Bridge was formed to overcome political rifts by offering a neutral platform to constructively exchange views and opinions. Bridge expanded globally and now has both local and online chapters in the US, Africa, Europe, Russia, New Zealand, Argentina, and Brazil.
We hope you are in for a civil and respectful political conversation, which is why we teamed up with Student Radio Maastricht to bring you current hot news every two weeks in a chill format of a conversation between friends, whose opinions do not necessarily match.

It's 2022 and the flow of news about social media companies, new ideas, and major controversies continues without any stop in sight. Europe is traditionally ranking high on transparency rankings across the world. Yet, many challenges still lie ahead in the fight against corruption. Our guest is Daniel Freund, a member of the European Parliament since 2019. After recognizing the independence of the so-called "People's republics" of Donetsk and Luhansk and sending the Russian army into the internationally recognized sovereign Ukrainian territory, Vladimir Putin has ordered an assault on all of Ukraine, starting the biggest war in Europe since the end of WW2. The effects after only a week of fighting are enormous: more than 800 thousand refugees in Europe, more than 2000 civilians killed (according to State Emergency Service of Ukraine), numerous cities bombed. In this episode, we had talked about the current state of things, feelings about the new war in Europe, the shifting world order, and the implications of the war for young people. This February China hosted its second Olympic Games in a little more than a decade. Yet, many things have changed since the summer of 2008 both in China and in its approach to diplomacy and foreign policy. The increasing influence of the Chinese government in the world, its ambitious development programs in Africa and the Middle East, as well as its bolder claims to Taiwan are posing a serious challenge to the Western democracies and global liberal order. In this episode, we've talked to Alex Leopold, an American political economist with a focus on relations between East Asia and the Middle East, BridgeUSA alumnus, and founder of Silk Road Journal. We have discussed the changes in China that have taken place since 2008, the Chinese approach to foreign policy, and the reactions of the United States and the EU to human rights violations by China.

In the first episode of our new format, BridgeTalks, we are discussing the 16 years of Angela Merkel's chancellorship and what it was like to grow up (not only) in Germany with her as the chancellor. Three different perspectives are meeting here: a German, who spent the recent years in different countries, a Frenchman, born and raised in Germany, and a Ukrainian, who has been living in Germany for the last 4 years. We are talking about Merkel's rise to power, her policies, how she managed to stay in the Bundeskanzleramt for so long, and the legacy she has left to future Germany.

South Africa is a big and important country with an interesting and eventful history. Although Apartheid was abolished in 1994, it still affects the state's political and economical landscape. In this episode, we discuss the history and the current socio-political life in South Africa with Martin van Staden, South-African jurist and author. Martin, who is a dedicated libertarian, also shares his view on South-African liberalism, its central ideas and differences with the liberal movements in the United States and Europe.

Diversity of ideas and constructive dialogue are the foundation of our civil society. Yet the polls show that fewer and fewer people are willing to become friends, talk to, or sometimes even be in the room with a person who has opposite political views. Our guest on this episode is Manu Meel, CEO of BridgeUSA, a student-led organization that works towards dialogue, ideological diversity, and solution-oriented politics. Under his leadership, BridgeUSA has grown into a global movement with more than 40 chapters in universities all across the United States and Bridge organizations in Europe, Africa, New Zealand, Russia, Brazil, and Argentina. Through his hard work trying to bridge the gap between political perspectives in American society, Manu made it onto the Forbes 30 under 30 list this year. In this episode, we are talking about the story and the future of BridgeUSA, the reasons for and possible actions against the polarization in democratic societies, and the power and opportunities for young people.

Press freedom and independent journalism are a foundation of liberal democracy and end up more and more under attack in recent years. In this episode, we've talked to Anastasia Lapatina, a former staff reporter for KyivPost, Ukraine's oldest English-language newspaper, which was effectively closed on November 8th, 2021 in a culmination of longstanding tensions between the staff and the ownership as a result of KyivPost's critical coverage of the country's political news. Among other topics, Anastasia covers human rights issues in Crimea and the fates of the Ukrainian women trapped in conflict zones in the Middle East. We've talked about the career chances for young journalists, the importance of the independent press, and the role of KyivPost as a bridge between Ukraine and the global West.

Universal basic income (UBI) has been a widely discussed topic for a while.
