The Evergreen Exchange is a podcast by Evergreen Gavekal. We discuss topics related to macroeconomics, investing, personal finance, and general wealth management.
There are many professional economists who can tell you what is on the horizon for 2024. In this episode of Think Ahead, Kaeli Kaainoa gets Co-CIOs, Jeff Dicks and David Hay, take on what investors should keep an eye on in 2024. Some topics discussed include the upcoming US presidential election and anticipated falling interest rates, rising federal debt, and removing emotions from portfolio decisions, all in our new and more concise interview format.
On this episode of Think Ahead, Katie Vercio and Kaeli Kaainoa discuss how they advise clients to choose people to name for various roles in their estate plan. This podcast covers Vercio’s recent blog post “A Guide to Advanced Medical Directives”, and goes more in-depth, using real-life examples of successes and challenges when those documents are put in force.
Some topics they cover:
· What are the key elements of an estate plan?
· What are advanced medical directives, and what are strategies for implementing them?
· Who should you choose to be agents of your estate?
· What are a few common mistakes to avoid if you have an estate plan in place?
· What role does my financial advisor play in my estate plan?
· What are the consequences if I never create an estate plan?

We all have friends who talk about their diets. I’ve always been struck by the fact that people who like to talk about them the most are typically overweight. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I heard a skinny person going on and on about his/her formula for success. In dieting and investing, it would seem that self-discipline plays a crucial role. So, what does self-discipline mean for investors? I think it can be a number of things, but here are some of the most critical elements as it relates to investment discipline.

As an asset manager, outsiders may believe Evergreen's primary duty is to invest money. What we know from nearly 40 years in the business, is that’s only half the job. A trusted advisor's greatest value is to guide clients through times of stress and uncertainty. This series focuses on three very common scenarios we see, where clients lean on their team at Evergreen to manage logistics and avoid costly errors instead of attempting it themselves. These three critical areas we will cover are divorce, death, and windfalls (liquidity events).
Today's episode starts with divorce. Evergreen's Senior Financial Planner, Katie Vercio, CFP®, CDFA®, interviews Family Law attorney, Blake Hilty, on how those going through a separation can be proactive and prepared to come out as unscathed as possible. In addition to being a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER, Katie is a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst. She can be engaged for any client considering or actively engaged in a separation. Working with a CDFA® helps to maximize an attorney's expertise on the legal side, by employing another party with more specific expertise in your financial affairs

In this episode of Coffee with Evergreen, partners, Jeff Otis, and, Jeff Dicks, CFA, discuss our investment committee's outlook on interest rates and explain some of the complexities that investors may be scratching their heads on when it comes to the relationships between interest rates, inflation, and various other economic realities. Evergreen has long been known as an "income manager". Not because our portfolios neglect to focus on the equity side, but because active management of both the stock and bond sides is uncommon even amongst professional managers. For 25 minutes, co-CIO Jeff Dicks, describes to listeners the ways in which his team leaves no stone unturned when optimizing portfolios for cash flow.

Evergreen Partners, Jeff Otis and Louis Gave discuss concerns regarding the effects of global politics on investment portfolios. Crackdowns on big tech by Chinese regulators have broadly received negative attention from global investors, but Louis offers a more nuanced perspective to consider. Gavekal is Evergreen's research partner and keeps our investment committee up-to-date on developments in Europe and Asia that may not otherwise be as prompt or accessible to a U.S. firm. Listen in as we discuss these questions:
How might social and political issues in Afghanistan impact markets?
What should U.S. investors make of Chinese tech regulation? And, how should investors participate in China?
Is now the time to consider Asian debt for your portfolio?

In 2020, Evergreen published a podcast on our thoughts about preparing for Biden's tax plan. Now, we are offering more specific analysis and guidance on what that could mean. With greater clarity today than we had before, this recorded webinar should answer some of your most pressing questions on how to navigate the tax code influenced by a new administration.
Katie Vercio, CFP is our Senior Financial Planner and Kelly Sterling, CPA is the Managing Director of our tax division. Together, they unpack the following topics:
What are some key highlights of Biden’s tax plan for individuals?
Who is most impacted?
For those impacted, what moves should be made in 2021?
Should high income earners consider accelerating income?
What strategies should business owners consider?

Jeff Otis interviews Evergreen CEO, Tyler Hay, on the changing environment in sports franchise ownership. As PE firms enter the space, these investments will become more accessible and new money will provide liquidity for current investors who took a hit in 2020/21. The change is yet another result of the status quo shift happening in nearly every sector to stay afloat after more than a year of Covid restrictions. Something we see almost daily but have never discussed on the podcast is the occurrence of what Jeff Otis calls "accidental wealth". Some clients have attained their financial goals through intentional wealth building and/or a sizeable inheritance, while others stumble upon it as a result of extreme career success. The most ubiquitous example here in the Seattle Area is the "tech worker". From developer to director, talented folks in the tech space tend to hit a level of means they are un-prepared to manage at some point in their working life.
Jeff Otis and Katie Vercio have built their careers in investment advice and financial planning, surrounded by the growth of Amazon, Microsoft, and other rising SaaS companies. How does this investor balance their interest in DIY personal finance with the real benefit of professional guidance? Find the right advisor who regularly works with tech execs, promotes a simple and transparent fee model, and can help clients learn to see around corners.

Evergreen Partners, Jeff Otis and Tyler Hay, are back with a discussion on some of the headlining factors driving markets as of late. This Deep Dive episode discusses the topics of crypto, cannabis, and which industries we think may be permanently altered by the pandemic's virtualization of so many sectors. Another center-stage topic continues to be the balancing of economic stimulus with a recovering economy. None of us has a crystal ball, but Tyler shares his considerations for thinking through whether inflation (or deflation) could lie ahead. Listen in as we discuss these questions:

Last Friday subscribers read Gavekal Research's piece, Investing for a New Cold War. Today on the Evergreen Exchange, listen to Evergreen CEO Tyler Hay interview Gavekal founder Louis Gave on this topic and more, complete with thought-provoking debate and lively banter.
The conversation between Tyler and Louis provides clarity on an issue that has dominated the news during Trump's presidency: will China surpass the U.S. as the world's greatest economic superpower?
Louis built his career in Hong Kong and was once even called one of the “smartest men in Asia” by Bloomberg. If you have a WSJ subscription, read his most recent interview with Barron’s: bit.ly/2xIXPbn
Listeners can skip through the sections indicated below if they wish to revisit points or only hear certain topics.
3:00 Is this the new face of war?
4:15 The current tensions with China are not the beginning of WWIII, but rather a new cold war.
5:45 Chinese people’s view of the U.S. was one of admiration until recent rhetoric portrayed the U.S.’s overarching goal as stifling China’s economic growth.
11:30 Trump has shifted his focus sharply toward trade tensions to detract attention from more concrete unfulfilled campaign promises—literally concrete ones, such as the border wall.
14:00 The tech sector wanted better intellectual property rights enforcement; they were not prepared to be the battleground.
17:00 More Chinese young adults are attending college than their American counterparts, and there are approximately 10x as many pursuing degrees in S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields.
25:00 China fell into communism after 125 years of social unrest, as a protection against cultural instability. Now it has become apparent that China is a profoundly capitalistic country on which socialism was imposed. We are experiencing the correction of that misalignment.
38:00 There is no way to know what a potential deal with China would look like, as it will be completely dependent on who Trump runs against in the 2020 election. If it’s Biden, Trump would seek to demonstrate superior foreign negotiation skill. If it’s Bernie, he’d seek a deal that reinvigorates loyalty with the working class. The trade war is a tool for his reelection campaign.
41:00 We must decide whether or not we believe that central banks create wealth. Does encouraging one to spend tomorrow’s money today promote sustainable growth?
46:00 Increasingly, countries who trade with China are basing their currency against the renminbi, negating the trade of U.S. dollars. It is possible that we are seeing the peak of the dollar.
