This week we’re diving a little deeper into Campaign Budget Optimization....and looking at how to effectively test your ads when first getting them started with CBO.
I’m sharing what I’ve learned about split testing your ads using CBO, and how to get the most out of your testing phase so that you can ensure you get clear data on all the ads you want to test! Which can be tricky to do when Facebook is deciding where your budget is spent!
But even with CBO allocating budget automatically for you, it’s still possible to run controlled, split tests to see which ads are performing best.....before you scale!
So listen in to my top tips on how to effectively structure and run your ad campaigns when you're in testing phase and using CBO.

Hey there! Welcome back to another episode of Ads That Convert! This week I’ll be discussing with you why using cookie cutter templates, copy and strategy could be holding you back from experiencing your ads true potential.
Does your audience engage with your ads? Or do they tend to scroll by them without doing anything? If they do engage, do they buy? Or do they drop off half way through the process, never to be heard from again?
If you’re experiencing issues, the problem could be the formula you’ve been given. Not all audiences are alike, and sometimes we forget that when it comes to sales and creating ads! Not to worry though, I’ll help you figure out what will work for your audience, and it starts right here with this episode.

Cost per lead is a metric that stresses a lot of people out when they're running Facebook ads. Much like obsessing over the numbers on a scale, discouraging people from losing weight, obsessing over your cost per lead might discourage you from going in on an ad strategy that will have huge results.
I’m taking a moment this week to dive into why cost per lead isn't the only metric you should be focusing on, and how to devise a strategy based on actual data, rather than just feeling out whether or not the cost is “too high”.
The more knowledge and data you have, the more informed decisions you can make, so click play and let’s get you the information you need to rock your next series of ads!

I’ve been diligently working hard on some of my clients launches, and noticed two sneaky little changes that Facebook has made that I almost missed!
I spend a great deal of my time in Facebook’s Ads Manager, and so If I nearly missed them, then you might miss them too!
The first is a small change within the lookalike audience section of the Ads Manager. Nothing major, but still great to know about since it will most certainly impact the performance of your ads and how you would normally go about choosing audiences.
The other is a change I noticed in the Connection Targeting area of Ads Manager, and where Facebook is shifting what they want to prioritize and what they consider to be important.
While neither change will derail your campaigns completely if you miss them, you’ll be much better served by paying attention to them, so click play, tune in and figure out how to best serve your ads for the rest of 2020!

This week on Ads That Convert, I’m talking all about the dreaded topic of Facebook ad rejection! You don't need me to tell you what a pain it can be to get ads approved right now, and in 2020, it’s could become even more difficult.
It's all part of Facebook's plans to tighten up on ad approval in order to ensure quality ads are being served to the proper audiences. And while that sounds well and good for the average user, it’s makes life a little more challenging for entrepreneurs and business owners who are interested in running ads.
Full disclosure - I’m not immune to having ads disapproved either! So this week, I’m going into detail about the most common reasons your ads will be rejected in 2020, and what to do about it when it does happen!

Running Facebook ads with someone else’s strategy is a lot like buying new clothes! It takes some time, searching and even a little bit of tailoring to find the right fit! What would you do if you do if you had a launch failed.....because of mistakes with your Facebook ads? Would you turn against them and believe they didn’t work? Would you consider your whole launch a complete failure?
Well today I’m talking to Laura Earnshaw, who did exactly that! But she soon learned how to turn it all around to have great success with her future launches.
Laura has an amazing business centered around helping children learn, grow and thrive as individuals. And when the demand made itself known, she put together a great course to help parents implement her strategies and help their children become more confident and self aware!
The problem occurred when she began to get serious about pushing the course out to a new audience, and a few simple mistakes (which we all can and do make) derailed her entire launch!
She calls this her Launch of Doom! So in this episode, I’m asking her all kinds of questions, not only about what went wrong, but what she started to do right that resulted in her 8x her ad spend in revenue!

It’s a bit more complicated than just putting your ads out into the world and seeing what happens! But, if you listen to this episode, and spend a little time in the right places, you’ll be well on your way to being able to do your own ads, no matter how big the launch, or the business behind it!
“I do want to share behind the scenes of what I do on a daily basis in managing a really big launch”
“How can I possibly ever run more than one launch at a time?”
“The success is most definitely in the preparation”
“When you’re in a launch situation, you only have a limited time to create an impact”

Where does your ad actually show up on Facebook? I think that’s a great question that deserves a closer look!
Often times when a platform gives us the choice between automatically doing something for us, or letting us do it ourselves, beginners choose automatic, and experts do things the hard way.
But as Facebook Ads Manager continues to get more elaborate, and the algorithm continues to evolve, that simply isn’t the case anymore.
In a lot of cases, automatic would actually be the best possible option, but there are still some very specific instances where you’ll want to have control over ad placement! If this hasn’t scared you yet (or even if it has scared you a little), click play and get all of the details on which one to go with!
“If you’re using a video ad and it’s more than a minute long, you won’t be able to show it on Instagram”
“What devices do you want your ads to be shown on?”
“A simple way to get your ads set up is to choose automatic placement”
“Serving your ad in as many places as possible is actually the best way to optimize it to get the best results”
“As always, the key is in the testing”

How can you tell if your audience is getting tired of seeing your ad? It’s a question I hear a lot from people running ads - particularly to evergreen funnels.

Zach Spuckler is the go to expert when it comes to challenges! And he's on a quest to help entrepreneurs use challenges to get their work in front of paying customers!
After going through a stressful and tiring launch, Zach found himself asking if there was a better way to engage people who want to buy from him. He began running 5-day challenges, and matched his revenue from the last launch with a lot less stress!
Zach’s also a great person for me to geek out with about ads, so when we got into the highs and lows of launching, and the ad-motional rollercoaster that comes with it, the conversation was very relatable!

This week I'm joined on Ads That Convert by Tiffany Lee Bymaster (aka Coach Glitter), to discuss her most successful launch ever.....which she ran completely LIVE!
Tiffany is amazing when it comes to making people comfortable with live video, and using it to amplify their brand. But she’s even more amazing at using Facebook Live during a launch.

Today we’ll be going deep behind the scenes for one of the most informative breakdown episodes out there on what makes a live launch so great, and how ads play a huge part in making it happen!
“If we’re still chasing likes, comments and numbers of followers, we’re not seeing the value of serving the right people”
“When your audience knows what to expect, it’s a dangerous place to be”
“How are you going to deliver a different experience to your audience?”
“Live video is the easiest way and the fastest way to create an engaged audience”
“You have to make it your own. You have to stand out. Otherwise you’re just copying what everybody else is doing”
“If you’re trying to please everybody, you’re pleasing nobody”

Emily Hodge joins me this week to discuss the shame she felt around running Facebook Ads prior to her last launch, and how she found great success when she finally started!
I’m really excited to be talking about this, because most often, the problems I hear people having with Facebook ads, are around the money side of things: “Am I going to lose money running ads?” or “Will my return on investment be worth it?”.
This conversation goes more into answering questions such as “Will I annoy people?” and “Am I really that good if I need to use ads to promote myself?”.
When Emily brought this topic up to me, I realized she was onto something that other people might be struggling with, so we got together and created this episode of Ads That Convert, just for you.
What You'll Discover:
Soundbites from this Episode:
“Why does life have to be about hustle and running around like a headless chicken”
“There was a long old mental state of change to go through before I got to where I was with the launch”
“The way I was feeling about ads was almost that it was a badge of honour not to use them.”
“It’s okay to promote yourself. People need to promote themselves”
“I think word of mouth is hugely important”
“I absolutely understand what I’m looking for now”

While I have been in sunny California during a retreat, something I’ve noticed that has come up a lot is fears and worries about targeting ads. We also need to understand Facebook Ad targeting and why it works or doesn’t work. During this episode, I’ll be talking about the five mistakes typically made and how we can come back from them or avoid them altogether. In my opinion, Facebook is the most powerfully targeted advertising platform in the world. We use the information that people share in the Facebook profiles, actions they take, pages they like and ads they click on for targeting.
Five Common Mistakes
Do audience research
The person wearing a red cardigan living in Newport Beach, CA
Too narrow of an audience/too niched down
Example: targeting your ad toward people who are 30-55, who are women, who live in a 25-mile radius of Denver, CO and are interested in skiing
Adding brands to bump up numbers
Relying only on interest targeting
“Facebook is unique in targeting ads.”
“You’ve got to know where your target audience are.”
“The deeper you can go in your psychographics details, the more information you’ll have on your audience and how to target effectively.”
“We want our ad to meet as many people as possible.”

Today I want to talk about how many variations and versions we should we test and set up during an ad campaign.
It's easy to get super creative, and have a whole range of versions of ad copy, images and videos we want to test. But, it's also important to do that in a way that gives you clear data on what is most effective in reaching your audience.

Long Copy? Short Copy? Medium Copy? What works best? Truth is....it doesn't matter! The length of the copy is not where your mind should be.
It's so much more important to focus on the message itself. What are you saying? Who are you speaking to? Connection is everything. And if we can give real thought to how we connect, tell our story, and put our message across in a way that gets full attention......that's more important than how many words you use!

In this episode, Liz chats with the founder of Sleep Well Wake Happy and creator of the Feel Like Yourself Again baby sleep solution, Tamiko Kelly. Tamiko is a certified sleep consultant, a holistic health practitioner, as well as an international speaker. Before diving into today’s topic Tamiko tells her background story and what steps led her to the creation and opening of her business. Tamiko says she began using Facebook Ads in 2013 to reach more people and ampliphy her message beyond the great organic growth and testimonial she had already attained.
During this interview Liz and Tamiko discuss the first Facebook ads Tamiko created, the reaction, and the impact on her business. They also discuss targeting smaller audiences, what Tamiko calls micro-niching in order to find the correct clients, the right people. Tamiko encourages people to use the audience insights portion of Facebook statistics.
“Facebook ads are just like anything else in your business. If you don’t know it . . . we’re not throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks. That’s not the right way to run a business.”
“You’re just making excuses. It’s not true.” (in regards to the myth Facebook ads only working for certain businesses)
“Getting low cost leads because your messaging is so on point, you’ve done the research, and you’ve truly worked at it.”

What do Facebook ads have to do with unicorn dust and glitter?
Well, there's a well known saying that goes something like this: "You can't polish a turd.....but you can roll it in glitter"
Meaning that some things are just so bad that you can't make them better. But you can try to hide them behind something else.
Like Facebook ads.
So in this episode, I'm exposing the honest truth about why it's time we stop treating Facebook ads like glitter.....and hope they'll work like unicorn dust on our business.

My guest this week is Sigrun, who I first met online in September 2018, and then had the pleasure of meeting at two live events at the end of the year too.
I was immediately struck by her passion and drive, and also the success she has created in her business in a relatively short time.
In 2017, Sigrun 3X her revenue. And prior to that, generated $100K in 12 months too. Now she is on a mission to accelerate gender equality through female entrepreneurship - coaching and mentoring other women to have success on their own terms too.
Listen in as she shares her story, her purpose, and why she feels she couldn't have built her business without Facebook ads!

Facebook has just (quietly!) announced a BIG change to the structure of ad campaigns, which affects how you set and spend your budget for your ads.

More and more, I’m noticing that the most compelling Facebook ads, that people will relate to most, are ones that tell a story. The kind of messaging that creates an emotional connection, and allows your audience to see why YOU’RE the best person to guide them on their journey.

When you're getting ready to run a Facebook ads campaign, there's usually one question that comes up time and time again:
"HOW MUCH SHOULD I SPEND ON MY ADS?"
For the most part, I see people sticking a finger in the air and just ‘hoping’ that if they run them long enough, their ads will bring in the bacon.
They don’t stop to make sure that the $200 budget they want to spend will actually deliver enough leads to turn into sales.
So today I’m going to walk you through my own simple process for figuring out EXACTLY what you need to spend on ads to hit your revenue goals. And it works. Every. Single. Time.
And I know that figures and calculations ain’t sexy! Some of you will already be reaching for the stop button! So I’ve created a super simple calculator for you that will work all this out for you.
You only need to pop in the price of your offer.....and how much revenue you want to make. The calculator will do the rest.

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE Christmas. Mainly because I get to watch the excitement and joy on the face of my 7 year old son when he sees his presents from Santa under the tree. But I absolutely love all the old traditions that go with Christmas too.
We go full on with putting out a wee dram and some cookies for Santa, and a carrot for Rudolf. And this weekend we’ll be choosing a tree, and putting up the Christmas lights on the house. Scary how fast Christmas comes around…..especially when you’re planning out a holiday campaign in your business!
Which leads into a question I’m often asked at this time of year......what do I do with my FB ads over Christmas?
Should you turn them off on Christmas Day/Boxing Day/New Year’s Day, and then back on again? Will they be more expensive? Will anyone want to buy?
All questions that I'm answering in this episode of Ads That Convert.
In this week's episode you'll discover: * Is it really a good idea to run ads over the festive period? * The do's and don'ts of pausing/stopping/scaling ads over Christmas and New Year. * Will your ads become more expensive during the holiday season? * A smart hack to keeping your ad results on track and your cost per lead down!

So often, when we create a Facebook ad, we are so laser-focused on the success of advertisement itself, we fail to look at the one thing that is even more vital to the triumph of your campaign: the landing page.
“What is a landing page?”
A landing page is a single website page that people are taken to after they click on your ad. It can be used to direct users to a blog post, product, webinar, lead magnet or course sign-up. For the purposes of this episode’s training, we will be focusing on a landing page created for a free offer, such as a PDF download, webinar or 5 day challenge.
“Why is a landing page important?”
A common misconception floating around the web is that if someone is interested enough in your Facebook ad to click on it, it is an automatic give-in that they will sign up for your offer. We wish, but it’s just not true! You are paying good money to Facebook to find the right people to direct to your landing page, but if the page itself is not designed in a careful and strategic way, it is guaranteed to hurt the cost of your leads.
“Wait…what does “good” actually look like?”
Let’s start with the some number-talk.
First, you need to calculate your number of sign-ups and divide the number of people who visited the page itself. You can do this using Google Analytics, or if you are using ClickFunnels or Leadpages, you can easily find those stats in the dashboard.
Next, let’s talk percentages. If you are getting a conversion rate of over 20%, thumbs up! If you are getting a conversion rate over 50%...well…why are you listening to this episode!? Just kidding, of course. But in all honesty, if you find that you are below 20%, some big things need to change.
“So, Liz, what will get people converting?”
I’m glad you asked! Here are the 5 key elements of creating a landing page that converts at a higher percentage:
The headline is the first thing people see, so it is an important element of your landing page! It needs to grab the attention of your visitor and compel them to read more! So, I hate to say it, but skip the logo (nobody cares about it – sorry!). Start focusing on some key words and phrases that will encompass all you have to offer!
Whether you are using a form or a call-to-action button, make sure you place it as high up as possible. You do not want people to have to search, so situate it so it is “above the fold” (which means before they have to start scrolling). Human beings are lazy, so if they have to go hunting, they will most likely click out. Also, make sure you are using contrasting colors so the opt-in form or button pops out!
Remember: We are not talking about a lengthy sales page. We are talking about a landing page for a free offer. Make it short and sweet so they can get what they want, and you can get you what want (their email address!).
Want to see a high-converting example (I’m talking a 70% conversion rate!)? Click here!
Create a congruent experience that is pleasing to the eye. A good way to do this is to keep the copy of your ad the same as on the landing page! This is a great way to link the two together to make the transition between the two smooth and aligned. You can also use the same images and videos.
Add some testimonials for your visitor to enjoy. This is a great way to validate your expertise and the value of your offer. Also, encourage them to share with their friends. You can do this by adding social buttons and icon, so spreading the word is just a simple click away.

Whether you are an experienced ad user or a newbie to the Facebook scene, there comes a time when a campaign just doesn’t perform the way you had hoped it would. Staring blankly at the Ads Manager dashboard is no fun, so that’s why today’s episode of the Ads that Convert podcast is all about how to identify why your ad isn’t performing, what needs to be fixed and how to fix it.
My first piece of advice is, of course, “Don’t panic!”. I am going to share with you the “Melville Method” to fixing Facebook ads, and soon you will be turning your ads around so they will convert like crazy and get the attention they deserve!
(Follow along by downloading my handy checklist “3-Step Understanding What Needs Fixing When Your Ads Ain't Working”).
Here is a brief overview of what we will be discussing in today’s episode:
Step 1: Check Cost Per Result (CPR)
This will depend on the type of campaign you’re running: Conversion, Traffic or Boosted Post. It’s important to take a step back at this stage and not to get attached to cheap leads or clicks – remember, it’s about the value of each result!
Step 2: Check Click Through Rate (CTR)
The click through rate will tell you how well your audience are reacting to your ad. Are they finding it interesting or do they think it is dull as dishwater? Don’t worry, the CTR metrics will reflect their behavior so you can make the necessary adjustments!
Step 3: Check your landing page conversion rate
A landing page is the website page your audience will land on after they click the link in your ad. What is the percentage of total visitors who are actually signing up for your offer, whether it be a webinar, a service or freebie? If it is low, start thinking of reasons why. Some things to think about are copy, graphics, colors and layout.
In fact, if you print out my checklist, I will show you where to find all of this information on your Ads Manager dashboard, as well as examples of what a “good stat” looks like. Remember to never get discouraged! There are a number of changes you can make to your Facebook ad so it goes from “dull” to “dazzling” – and it may even be a simple tweak or two! However, if you need to scrap it, it’s no big deal, because now you know what to look for when creating your new campaign.
Listen to this episode to get the details, and don’t forget to download the guide, 3-Step Understanding What Needs Fixing When Your Ads Ain't Working.

One of the most popular questions I get asked as a Facebook Ad Strategist is this:
“What is a Facebook Pixel?”
That’s certainly a good question! A Facebook Pixel is that pesky piece of HTML code that every advertiser should be using for their business (I say “should”, because I know not everyone does!). It is specific to YOU and will be the go-between from your website and Ads Manager so you can track your ad process, progress and results.
Now, you may be running for the hills at the sound of tech-talk, but keep listening, because on this episode, I am going to give you 6 simple steps to follow so you can easily find and set up your pixel perfectly - even if you're a complete technophobe!
(You can also follow along by downloading my free Step by Step Guide to Using the Facebook Ad Pixel for Better Campaign Results! Get the guide by clicking here).
Here are some of the key takeaways you will get from this episode:
Step 1: Where you find your Facebook Pixel.
Whether you are an Ads Manager pro, A Business Manager genius or someone who is just starting out, snagging your Facebook Pixel really is a breeze!
Step 2: How to copy the code.
It’s as simple as that…really!
Step 3: Learn where to put it.
I will walk you through the exact places (yes, more than one location!) to put the Facebook Pixel on your website to track activity.
Step 4: How to make sure you did it right.
This isn’t just a “one-and-done” job! Just like in school, there are ways to double-check your work to get an A+!
Step 5: Find out about “re-targeting”.
You know how when you are browsing on Amazon and you put something in your cart, but then all of a sudden it shows up your Facebook newsfeed, reminding you to purchase it? That is called “re-targeting”! Spooky, yet effective and necessary for a successful Facebook Ad!
Step 6: How to track conversions.
Conversions are what we want, so this is a crucial step you really want to stick around to hear about!
So there you have it! Between this episode and my free guide, you are all set to fire off your very first Facebook Pixel! Even if this is sounding super complicated geeky and techy, remember that it’s not. Take your time, go through the steps in this podcast episode and the step-by-step guide I gave you, and you will not only understand the process of your advertising campaign, but understand your audience, their habits and lower the cost of your ads.

Welcome to the very first episode of Ads that Covert! My name is Liz Melville, and I am a Facebook Ad Strategist, as well as the host of this podcast. I am so excited to be sharing my love of Facebook advertising with you (but believe me, “love” is not what I would have called it at first!). To kick off the launch of the show, I wanted to give you a taste of what we will be talking about in future episodes, as well as my experience going from getting lost in Ads Manager to running million-dollar ads for some of the top professionals in the online business space.
Why did I start this show?
I know how frustrating it can be to get results you want from Facebook ads. You know it’s possible – you have seen it before! – but it’s just not working for you. You might be saying, “I’ve tried all the audiences!” or “I’ve done all the things!” but it’s just not working.
But they do. And they will!
How did I get into Facebook Ads, anyway?
I started off as a Facebook marketing consultant in 2010, so it’s safe to say that I know the platform inside and out. However, when I first clicked on “Ads Manager”, I felt like I was walking into the cockpit of an airplane. But, I was determined to fly!
I made mistakes, and I made them often! So I took courses, listened to podcasts and was mentored by the greatest in the business. And since hindsight is the greatest teacher there is, I am here to bring all I have learned to you!
Why should I listen?
Every week, I will be bringing you tried and tested methods that have been proven to work time and time again, regardless of the amount that is being spent on an ad campaign. There is no secret formula to Facebook ads, but there are strategies to learn and I will break them down with you and share them in plain English.
Thank you for listening to Ads that Convert, and I can’t wait to hear of your successes in your future campaign endeavors!
