For our district elementary teachers, math time is often the launching point for developing personalized practices in the classroom. In this podcast, Hillside 4th-grade teacher Erica Riffner broadens our scope as she shares her experiences with personalized learning in math, reading, writing, and in a variety of other aspects of her teaching practices. Erica was one of our district's PL year-one cohort, and as a result, her insights come from four years of classroom implementation, revision, and multiple iterations that have refined the personalized model she has developed for her learners.
In this episode, I sit down with WMS English teacher John Horton and discuss the process by which the 8th-grade English team develops their semester-long, student-driven inquiry project. The team supports learners as each individual student begins by developing an authentic question that they then research and discuss until it evolves into a focused topic that can be researched in further detail - and so on – until it culminates with all students sharing their final product during an evening showcase event that is open to parents and the community. The choices afforded students, and in particular, the steps the team takes in supporting those choices and the entire inquiry process, make this a podcast that is well worth the listen for those interested in personalized practices in the classroom.
Richard Christie, 6th-grade educator at Prairie Lane Elementary, attended our PL training day and took away his own creative vision for implementing flexible learning spaces into his classroom. In this episode, Mr. Christie shares his flexible space model and more importantly notes the academic benefits that came along with this shift. Student agency increased, so did his students' productivity, his framework for classroom management shifted, and each student's ability to effectively write and revise during ELA time improved - and it all started with a subtle shift in the way Mr. Christie thought about the furniture in his classroom.

For this episode, I interviewed the editors of multiple WHS journalism publications with two goals in mind. The first goal was to share the story of how one student took on the sole responsibility of creating an entirely new website for our high school journalism program. The second goal was to highlight just what students are capable of when an educator intentionally creates a classroom culture that permits students the opportunity for voice, choice, and learner autonomy.
I'm definitely pleased with the unique structure of this podcast; join Jerred and I as we sit down together to listen to the interviews I conducted with his students. You will hear those students share their stories, and we will break periodically to catch Jerred's initial reactions to their comments along with his insights regarding the culture he has built with as the advisor for this program.
Compared to other WP podcasts, this episode does not provide a direct lesson, unit, or procedural example - journalism is somewhat of its own unique entity - but there is a personalized mindset that is clearly expressed here in both Jerred's and his students' comments. Enjoy!

Join educator Jon Preister and I as we hold a deep-dive discussion on how the government teachers at Westside High School have created an immersive game experience that provides students with the opportunity to learn about government and politics in a first-hand, role play game. The personalization here is next level, as each individual student selects from a myriad of real-world roles and then learns course content and concepts through the authentic learning experience this course creates.
This episode walks listeners through the entire process, from design to implementation to after unit reflection, of the development of this immigration unit with educator Mel Rice. Her vision of personalizing the learning experience by affording her students a variety of choices to allow them to explore the unit content of immigration according to their own interests and creative aptitudes/sensibility transformed the content from a story about the past to an immersive, first-person experience. I had the privilege of observing Mel's class during this unit and found it powerful to hear 3rd graders articulate what they had learned. The content that they created revealed both an intimate knowledge of our nation's history and also conveyed a strong sense of empathy for the plight (steeped in research) of the fictional immigrant each student had created.

- Try to identify the initial needs Mel presents as the justification for selecting this particular unit. Consider how her criteria might influence where you might look to personalize the learning experience in your classroom.
- Note how Mel's differentiation and choice options permeate several facets of the unit. How might you infuse choice into other facets of your own practices beyond where you already have implemented differentiation.
- Reflect with Mel and learn from those reflections. Use her first iteration as a springboard to address or even jump past some of those tough early, growing-pain lessons of trying out a new practice. And at the same time, hear the enthusiasm in Mel's voice as she anticipates extending these practices in the future.
Mel's Bio: Mel is in her 22nd year in education and has taught at nearly all levels of elementary. Having taught at a variety of schools in our district over that time, Mel currently teaches at Rockbrook Elementary, which is a special experience for her as she attended Rockbrook Elementary herself as a child. Mel's enthusiasm for supporting and also challenging her students has made her efficacious across the multitude of the roles that make for a highly-effective educator, and those skills are apparent in this pod as she was able to attend ourWestside Personalized training and within a few short weeks implement a whole unit redesign.

For this podcast, I invited three of my former students in for a roundtable reflection on personalized learning. Our discussion focuses in on the "honest conversations" we had as I was still developing my own personalized practices in the English classroom.
