You want to talk about contract changes, we are talking some contract changes! You want records? We've got records! How about the Olympics in Florida? We've got some of that too!

Beware: 1:07 to the end of the podcast is pretty much just tangents about television shows, so if that's going to drive you up the wall, you have been warned.

Happy holidays! This episode is centered all around discussion of The Marathon Project. We talked about what this means for the future of elite racing and whether the possible changes are a good or a bad thing, how media might (and should) change to increase visibility and accessibility for the sport, and highlighted individual performances.

Pretty sure "javelinist" isn't a word but it sounds pretty fancy. We talked about a lot of races and a little bit about doping! Alex had a shoe review and something else and then about halfway in things went off the rails a little bit, but in a good way.

How 'bout that London Marathon? That's right! It's the London recap episode where we talk about a handful of other things that happened before London and then talk about the main event! We talked hippo attacks, a $25M college XC course, and a few other things before we dove into London. But get stoked because we have an actual real WMM result to talk about for the first time since Tokyo. PS: We're available on Amazon Music/Audible now if that matters to you!

It's been a while since we recorded an episode, but we finally got a chance to sit down and talk. Some of it is even about running! And shoes and our running and other stuff too. We're going to try to be better, just hang with us, please.

We're back with another interview with Colby, a coworker of Evan's who ran in college and has proved himself quite a competitor at the marathon post-collegiately. he talks about his training philosophy, his interesting accommodations, and Nomad Running Society.

We pretty much dove straight into it with Colby, so we're missing our usual intro patter, but we hope the soup discussions more than make up for it.

Hola folks, we've got our first of many interviews during this unexpected and protracted offseason. We got to talk to Ruby Wyles, a British distance runner competing for SMU who was just about to start her first season as an NCAA athlete during the spring.

This was our first go at doing a livestream for Patreon supporters and it was a little bumpy to start, but it worked well once we actually figured it out, so we're going to keep it up going forward. We'll be sending out the links near showtime each week to patrons and the episodes will be viewable shortly afterward.

We only talked about shoes for a minute this time. What we did talk about was the four world records that have been set since our last podcast, plus US Indoors, a nearly-sub 4:00 mile from a high schooler, and how global health concerns might continue to affect our sport going forward. Oh, and what our thoughts are on the US Olympic Marathon Trials (which are happening NEXT WEEK!).

After that, we got to talk to Megan Youngren, a name you might recognize from the top of our women's leaderboards. She got her Olympic Trials qualifier at CIM in 2019, and we got to talk to her about what it's like to be a runner in Alaska and how she decided on an OTQ as a goal as well as the actual path she took to get there.

We were short on content this week. We talked Houston fields and then Evan got really into explaining the Hakone Ekiden and that was pretty much it. So we got our friend and podcast emailer Scott to come on and talk with us and then we tried a new bit which is just running down the LetsRun training forum threads and answering the ones that were phrased as questions. We think it led to some interesting discussions and just generally funny moments, but we'd love feedback.

Next week's going to be weird because both Evan and Alex will be in Houston so we'll see what the recording schedule is like!

That's right. The IAAF (or World Athletics) has confirmed receipt of  the refund for the overpayment they sent in 2017. This is it. This is all we have for this story. It's been a fun ride. But while we were covering the end of this rollercoaster of a scoop, we also talked about whether athletes should boycott the Diamond League after the absurd program cuts for the 2020 program (Tianna Bartoletta blog post here). We talked about the NCAA XC regionals that have already taken place now and the news about the New England region, Nike's injury relief shoes, some fun facts about the second best high jumper in the world and gave our thoughts on two early previews for the US Marathon Trials.

That's right, this sucker is 140 minutes long, which is 18 minutes longer than the runtime for the recently released feature film "Joker". You could go see that whole movie and we'd still be talking about some combination of the Alberto Salazar coaching ban by the IAAF, discussion about what really constitutes a breach of coaching ethics, why the way people cast speculation of doping on incredible performances is so often dumb and ruins the moment for fans and also seven days worth of results from the IAAF/World Athletics 2019 Doha World Championships. This week, we reviewed the results of the Battle of London—uh, I mean the London Marathon. We got to talk about a lot of different parts of the race and their implications.

We also happened to record on the day that the CAS ruling was released. We talked extensively about this largely due to the amount of bad information we had seen reported about the case from major non-running news outlets.

While we did profess some opinions about the ruling, the major goal we had was to establish what the basic facts of the situation are so that both we and our listeners could correct bad information when it was presented in the future. We tried to approach the situation respectfully and broadly, without further contributing to the invasions of privacy that some athletes have had to endure for the better part of a decade. We certainly hope that’s what we did. If we got something wrong, please let us know.

We talked about his running history and got to go really in-depth on his last few years of racing, plus a great story about how he won that 50 km road race earlier this month.

This week, the big news was the new qualifying standards from the IAAF. We spent the bulk of our time on this. We also talked NCAAs, USATF 15k championships, Mo Farah's half marathon and Kara Goucher's race schedule! We also talked a little bit about the 5k getting dropped from the Diamond League schedule (again, thanks to the IAAF).

We finally have an interview for you, and it is absolutely worth the wait. Last week, we mentioned that Luke Puskedra retired. This week, we were lucky enough to have him on the show to talk about his career and what's next for him. We also covered Euro champs and had a quick Tokyo recap. This is a long run, so enjoy it! Thanks again to Luke Puskedra for coming on!

I'm not going to lie. We led off with talk about projectile vomit. It got better from there, though. We talked USA Indoors, Tinman results around the world, some interesting news from Paris 2024, the retirement of Luke Puskedra, and Wayde Van Niekerk's return to racing for the first time since 2017 Worlds! Finally, we finished up with some really engaging listener questions.

We led off this week's show with discussion of some fantastic new products from Mo Farah (and a conspiracy), then dove right into results. We covered RAK Half, everything that happened at Millrose, Ritz finished a race, Youn-gebrigtsten set some records, and finally...another conspiracy! A Coburnspiracy, if you will.

We mentioned Kemoy Campbell's GoFundMe for his medical expenses in the show. If you'd like to donate, you can do so here. Jon Gault of LetsRun.com has a great tweet explaining why the GoFundMe is there, if you're interested.

This episode was packed. We talked USATF XC, Australian XC trials, Sugaru Osaka's causal 63:00 half, more Russian doping, Zane Robertson's contract and where he's going to be running in the future, and much more. We got a great question in from Robert about the Allie Kieffer scale post on Instagram that has upset some folks over the last week too.

This week, we were happy to host Mario Fraioli for the interview portion of the podcast! We're in the swing of indoor season now, and had a couple of meets to cover, including Dr. Sanders Invite and a rather exciting New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. We also recapped a super speedy Dubai Marathon, and covered the Tokyo Marathon elite field. We also had talk of running books, movies, and a very very specific indoor record from an Aggie.

Thanks to Mario Fraioli for coming on the show! You can find him at @mariofraioli and @theAMshakeout.

It's another week of the 1609 pod, and we had quite a bit to cover this week. First up was the Houston Half Marathon, which nearly saw another American record. Next, we mourned Usain Bolt's bourgeoning soccer career and talked a bit about Dubai's prize purse and what it takes to be an IAAF Platinum race. After that, we covered some coaching changes and sponsor changes and took a look at the London Marathon start list.

This week, we picked up right where we left off last week (literally) and started the episode discussing the Centro to Bowerman move. We did a quick recap of a couple of races at UW Preview, talked about Hillary Bor's win at Stirling XC, covered the newly announced London elite field and Boston international elite field, discussed the new World Relays events, and Alex had a conspiracy theory about the newly-formed Vatican track team. Finally, we posed the episode's titular question: Where do the bananas go? Runner's World had the answer for us, and the discussion was absolutely bananas. (Puns.)

The Miles to Trials interviews are going to be interviews with runners who have qualified for the US Olympic Trials in our typical interview format. Sam Roecker was kind enough to be our first interview, and we were thrilled to talk to her.

Sam Roecker finished third at the US Marathon Championships at CIM in 2018 with a 2:30:25 marathon time behind Emma Bates and Stephanie Bruce. We got to talk to her about what she does for a living, how she fits running in around her job, how she got to where she is from middle school to now, and what's next for her in the run up to the 2020 US Olympic Marathon Trials and Tokyo.

You can follow Sam on Instagram at @samroecker and on Twitter at @samroecker_.

New year, new memes! We touched on a couple of fast times on the roads, a fast time in the park, and news about the 2019 Pre Classic location. Finally, we come hot out the gate with our predictions for 2019. Some are really out there, but others are ones we genuinely think stand a good chance of happening this year. Finally, we read some listener predictions that we got in on Twitter before the show. What do you think we got wrong this week? @ us on social. (@1609pod everywhere if you forgot.)

Along with every other podcast you're listening to this week, we talked about the 20th anniversary of the 1998 NCAA XC Championship victory from Colorado and Adam Goucher at the top of the show. There are spoilers aside from the outcome of the race, so if you haven't read Running With the Buffaloes and want to, skip ahead to 9:49 to miss that section.

We also talked about Kipyegon Bett's B sample, Katelyn Tuohy and the frustrating structure of the high school national championship scene, some Sydney McLaughlin news, and some more talk about post-collegiate running team turnover. This episode is a little lighter on pro news and very heavy on Thanksgiving food take discussions. We recapped Manchester Road Race and Silicon Valley Turkey Trot, discussed Farah's musings about returning to the track for 2019, and lambasted the IAAF for things we think they did badly. But the listeners are the real stars of the show this week! We got a ton of emails, race results (y'all are some speedy folks!) and Thanksgiving takes and we had a blast discussing them.

Long episode this week! Yep, we're talking about the Bicentennial: 100 miles, 100 beers, and just 80 hours to complete the two. Not your normal ultra, but definitely interesting to follow along with!
