In episode 109 of Becoming Badass podcast I had the absolute honour of speaking with Keith Banks. Keith is a QPS Veteran who is highly decorated, highly respected and who is also just a really nice person!

TW- Topics such as suicide, murder, shootings and death are discussed

Keith is an Author of two books, 'Drugs, Guns & Lies' and 'Gun to the Head'. I've been listening on Audiobooks and honestly...SO GOOD.

Keith is very well respected within the veteran community - both Policing & ADF. Once you listen to his story, you'll understand why. He so generously told parts of his story on this podcast episode. I feel like we've only scratched the surface. He has experienced so much in his time.

In episode 107 of Becoming Badass podcast I was lucky enough to chat with Pres Cowan. Pres is a former PTI in the Army and has had some realyl cool experiences in her 8 year long Army career.

Pres loves fitness. Obviously... she was a PTI. She's worked with the APCP program (now known as FITPREP) and has some really positive insights to share about this program.

Pres really values fitness, nutrition and wellness very highly. She's now a new Mum to a gorgeous 4 month old bub. She's taking the time to recover and look after herself so that she can get back to training to full capacity sooner rather than later. I loved talking about this with Pres as it really highlights what human bodies are capable of!

In episode 106 of Becoming Badass podcast I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Sarah Spicer.

If I'm being honest, this was one of the most epic episodes I've recorded in a very long time. And it's not because of anything I did. Sarah is AWESOME

Sarah has been a Fire Fighter in NSW for 6 years. She's incredibly driven, she works hard and she keeps herself fit and healthy. Why? Because it's important. It's important for her own wellbeing but it's important for her job.

Sarah values physical fitness up there with Mental Health and Mental wellness and it's so evident in the way she speaks about her experiences that she's here to make a huge impact in both of these areas. You're honestly going to love this episode.

If you're on Instagram, follow Sarah! You'll love everything about her.... Follow her here

Adam and I connected over a year ago when he asked me to be on his podcast. It's taken us a year to get here but he finally came to Brisbane to interview me and then I interviewed him.

[TW- In this episode we discuss suicide. If you don't feel comfortable with this, then we understand and I'll see you next week]

In this episode he talks about volunteering for CFS and now working as a paid staff member. Adam has had his fair share of adversity  growing up. From being bullied for his differences to extreme mental health struggles that saw him wishing to end his life. This experience was a complete crossroad for Adam and it was at this point that he made the decision to turn his life around.

Adam is now on a mission to live the most incredible life he possibly can. He's doing so much with his life and he's only just getting started. Adam is one of the nicest people I've ever met and I'm so grateful that he gave us his time on the podcast!

Troy Knight is a former Combat Controller in the RAAF.

He served over 2 decades in the RAAF before moving on from defence and becoming an Author of the book 'Havoc06'. Troy has had a jam packed career in the RAAF. His stories are second to none and my only regret from this episode is that I wish we could have kept recording for hours.

Troy and I talk about his decision to join the RAAF and the path to becoming a Combat Controller. We talk about his challenges with mental health and the impact this had on his family and his career. We chat about writing his book with Brooke Strahan and his plans for a second book and more. We talked a lot of shit and it was great.

We were recording in a cafe so the audio is a bit shit but if you can push through that... the content of this episode is pure gold.

Troy is a legend and I am SO grateful he was able to give us his time to come on this podcast.

Shaun is an incredible human. As you can tell by the length of this episode, we had a LOT to talk about. He's served as an Army SSO Helicopter Pilot, deployed several times and had so many cool experiences and opportunities. He then decided later in life to give the Fireys a crack!

We talk about his lead up training, his experiences throughout his careers and the values he holds with high importance in his job!

H wants you to either love him or hate him. No half assed decisions here. So what's it going to be? Have a listen and i'll let you decide for yourself.

A lot of you would already know about H. He's a bit of a legend in the Veteran space and is a well sought after bloke when it comes to podcasts. I am beyond honoured that he made time to join me for EPISODE FREAKING 100!!! If you've never heard of him, that's cool. Chuck your helmet on, grab a brew and settle in for one of the most empowering chats I've ever had on Becoming Badass.

H & I talked about lots of different things. He has such a different Military experience to me but we were on the same page about absolutely everything we spoke about

This episode is completely different to anything else we've ever had on here! Today I chatted with my friend Matt Lydement. He's recently wrapped up at the Tokyo Olympics. I wanted to get him in to talk about what it actually takes to prepare for an Olympics. Physically and Mentally. To be so on the TOP of your sporting game that you can represent your country on a world stage. Funnily enough though, a lot of it is about mindset.

Matt talks to us about preparing for an Olympics that got cancelled and then still not allowing himself to get excited in case Tokyo 2021 didn't go ahead. He trained from home during all lockdowns. He could have used any excuse he liked to avoid training, but he never did. He only EVER showed up.

Matt has a lot of wisdom to offer all applicants. So many principles we discussed carry over to applicants. Turns out preparing for the Olympics and preparing for the ADF/Police/Fireys actually have a lot in common

On today's episode of Badass I talk to Sally who has just wrapped up her time at Kapooka for Army Reserves. She's a GSO Officer Cadet and absolutely smashed her way through Kapooka. Sally trained with TBG for a year prior to heading off and it was because of this training that she absolutely dominated.

As we would all know, Army has reduced the PFA requirements for non-combat job roles. Sally explains why you still need to strive for much higher than the minimum standards. There are a lot of components of Kapooka that recruits will find difficult if they have only just reached those lower standards

Sally absolutely loved Kapooka and you can hear the excitement and passion in her voice as she talks to us about it. She had an awesome time and did really well

I'm so proud of Sally and all that she has worked for in the past year. She has stayed committed to her training and it shows.

On today's episode I chat with Commando Steve. Steve Willis rose to fame during his time as 'The Commando' on The Biggest Loser back in 2007. The evolution of Commando Steve over the years saw him go on to write 3 books, compete in the CrossFit games, acted on Home & Away and become a contestant on Survivor. Steve now owns 'Get Commando Fit' down in Sydney and is a Dad to 4 gorgeous kids

I was absolutely obsessed with The Biggest Loser. I knew all the contestants, I knew all the trainers, I knew everyone and loved it. So when I had a rush of courage and reached out to Commando Steve to be on the podcast, I actually didn't expect him to respond. After all, he's a busy guy and he's Commando Steve. I was absolutely gobsmacked when he replied to say he'd love to be on the podcast. So here we are

There's so much more to Steve than camo pants and black sunglasses. For the first time on my own podcast, I was pretty much speechless. He is so insightful about everything. Everything he says can be applied to everyones lives

During this chat you'll hear my baby, Jack, carrying on at times. Whilst I organised for him to hang out with his Dad, he clearly just wanted to hang out with Commando Steve too. So if you hear weird noises and the occasional whinge...it's just my needy child. But that's life, right? We can't always create the perfect circumstances and so we do whatever we can do get the job done

You can follow Commando Steve on IG here

In this episode I had the pleasure of chatting with the authors of 'The Resilience Shield'. If you haven't heard of this book then you soon will.

Dr Dan Pronk, Ben Pronk DSC and Tim Curtis have co-written an incredible book on Resilience. It takes everything they have learnt during their time serving with SASR and combined this with research on resilience and brings you an epic collection of SAS Resilience techniques to master your mindset and overcome adversity.

In this episode we chat about the book, the process of writing it and how the contents of this book is going to shape the future generation of serving members. As an applicant, you'll want to listen to this podcast episode and then go out and buy the book. I believe this should be a mandatory read for all ADF and Police applicants.

Jaymi is not only an actual badass within her work life and career, she's one of my closest friends in the world. She's been so keen to be on the podcast and I'm so grateful for her time and her ability to tell her story.

Jaymi went through ADFA and RMC and was then offered a spot in Artillery Corp as a fresh new Lieutenant. We started at 20 Regt at the same time, deployed together and have since stuck by each other through thick and thin.

She has kicked ass in her career. She's had her fair share of adversities but she's never let this stop her from continuing to push forward and make an epic career for herself.

I won't give anymore away because Jaymi's story is epic and you just need to hear it for yourself.

I'm SO honoured that she agreed to be on Becoming Badass. Rach is not only an Army Veteran, she's an Author, a Ted Talk Australia Speaker, a Leadership Expert Key Note Speaker,  a 'bit of a big deal on LinkedIn' and an up and coming Wake Boarder.

Jacqui de Gelder is someone that I've always looked up to. She doesn't really know this and she'd likely be confused as to why.

We were deployed to Afghanistan at the same time in 2009. I did my job from the main operating base and didn't get the chance to go 'outside the wire'. I watched from afar as Jacqui was operating as a medic embedded in amongst Infantry patrols, well and truly 'outside the wire'.

She would never see herself as a 'female medic'. She'd only ever tell you that she was a 'medic just doing her job'. That's what is so inspiring about Jacqui. She's not afraid to jump in and do the job that's required of her, regardless of the location or circumstances.

I couldn't be more honoured to have Jacqui de Gelder on Becoming Badass. I did a little squeal and fist pump when she said yes. You guys are going to love hearing her stories.

Emma has been in QPS for just shy of a decade. She's worked in Mt Isa, Railway squad and has worked in a specialised unit doing covert work. Her career has been extremely interesting.

Emma is an awesome chick. She wants women to back themselves and not discount their ability to be a police officer just because they are a female. She takes fitness seriously and she's a very driven and level headed person.

This whole situation with COVID-19 is madness.

If you're like me, you have a lot of thoughts and feelings about the whole thing. As you would know, all gyms were shut down a week ago which has forced everyone to move into workouts from home. Whilst this is not the end of the world it's also not ideal for a lot of us (Go on... you can say it... it sucks!)

At TBG we've shifted everyone over to online coaching and it's been really awesome to see how they all adapt!

Some of you have decided to purchase some equipment to help with online coaching. Please ensure you are investing in quality equipment that is relevant to the training you are doing.

In this episode we talk about how to prioritise your time and how to effectively manage your life so that you can get the most out of training when you work shift work.

Kate has been training at TBG for a little while now. She's fast become one of the most impressive people in the gym with her badass attitude that she brings to each session. Her progress during her short time at TBG has boosted her confidence and as a result her training has reached and epic level of intensity.

Kate was told to wait a year before she could enlist. She has only seen this as a blessing in disguise. Tiffany used to be a Navy Cadet. This is what sparked her interest in a career in the ADF.

In this episode we talk about why it's worth driving the distance, paying for tolls and spending hours waiting at TBG for your session to start.

This interview was captivating and you'll hear me get a little passionate and animated towards the end. I make no apologies. I care about the standard of people that go forward into the ADF and want nothing more than to ensure we're sending only those who are suitable and want it bad enough!

Bambi started out with our Online Coaching then moved to Brisbane and joined The Barracks Gym. The fact that the gym is in Brisbane was a huge consideration when she was deciding if she should move here or not.

Turns out that even though she finally had access to us, it still scared the shit out of her. She felt awkward and nervous coming into the gym. She worried about how people in the gym perceived her every time she walked in. She doubted herself. She wasn't sure if she had what it took.

No one thinks that when they apply for the ADF that the application will end up uncovering a severe medical condition they didn't know about.

In this episode we talk to 'Squid' about going through the process without any clue that something was wrong. She was sent off for additional tests and ended up face-to-face with a cancer scare at 32 years old.

She wants to join the RAAF but has to overcome this huge medical obstacle first.

It's a topic that's important and Squid has chosen to speak openly about it to raise awareness for other women.

Hi There!
This podcast episode is all about me! We've done things a little differently this time in that I am being interviewed by The Barracks Gym owner, Michael.

Most of you would know that I was the first female to enlist into a Combat Corp in the Army. I enlisted into Artillery Corp and found myself in a male dominated job. Not only was I the only female solider conducting my job, I had to really fight hard when it came to fitness. I had to recognise my deficiencies and work HARD to make sure I could stand my ground when it came to fitness.

I worked my ass off to ensure that I was good at my job.

In this episode we talk about life before the Army, life IN the Army and life after the Army. It's a 2 hour episode and we drank wine whilst we recorded. I suggest you do the same whilst listening. Unless you're driving to work. Then just grab a coffee.

Lot's of swearing. Don't listen to this in front of your kids unless you have headphones.

ENJOY!

From unique family situations, turning 18 at Recruit School (we actually got everyone at the gym to vote for what her first legal drink should be), being fearful of fitness once she gets down there, wishing she started at TBG long before she actually did and Justin Beiber.

This was quite a ride and we had a lot of fun whilst chatting!!

Nemo comes from a family with a really specific cultural background. Due to this background her family has pretty strong expectations on what she should and shouldn't be doing with her career.

She felt pressured to keep them happy and do what they expected of her. So she went to Uni. She hated it. She didn't bother trying to get a job at the end of it because she KNEW it just wasn't for her.

She saw an add for Defence and wanted to see what was on offer. She knew right away that this was more 'her' and it was what she wanted to do. Breaking this to her parents wasn't easy and it took a long time to convince them that this was right for her.

In this episode she talks us through the cultural expectations she came up against. She's spoken really openly about this in the hope that other people from similar backgrounds will find the courage to go against the norms if it's what they truly want.

Nemo was a total legend in this episode and I really hope you enjoy this!

It's interesting that in our current society where equality is at the forefront of everything... plenty of people still believe that they should be excused from certain activities due to their gender.

Males & Females can now apply for any roles in the military, they just need to meet the required standards. It's all about the right person for the job. So why do so many chicks ask about 'female' push-ups and use statements like 'I won't have to do that because I'm a girl'.

I hate to break it to you but there is only one standard of push-up that will be accepted and you WILL be expected to do everything the boys can do.

In this episode I give an insight into my own experiences and why I believe that 'being a girl' is horse shit when it comes to Military life. You're a solider first. The end.

She's a dominant, confident personality and came to us with a bit of attitude. We found a way to curb this to a level that helped her excel in her training.

We chat about socialising with people at TBG, drinking, boys, dogs, family, friendships, 'normal' families, what not to study at uni and how to pass the time until you figure out what you want to do with your life... at 25 years old.

We discuss the Gap Year Program, applying as a 16 year old, the importance of 'life experience', fitness, having a supportive gym community, the excitement of a new career after a Uni degree and how having the worlds more loving and supportive family has meant the world to her.

Please note- Swear words have not been beeped out. I like to swear and I'm not ashamed of that. If you're listening to this episode with small humans around, I would suggest using headphones.

Lance & Richard* both train at The Barracks Gym. One of them heads to RMC very soon and the other hasn't even applied for the Army yet. They are good mates.

They didn't know each other prior to coming to TBG. They gravitated together due to being surrounded by chicks in the gym. Now they are the ultimate training team and have been dominating in the gym for months.

In this episode we talk about the unlikely friendships that can come about whilst you're in the Military. How having a common goal can bring people together and make it feel like you've known each other forever. We talk about drinking, TV shows, squatting PBs and partying.

Enjoy as we uncover how having a solid training buddy can change your fitness progression epically.

Theres a few swear words thrown around here so avoid listening to this when there are small humans around who might repeat those words at inappropriate times.

*- Names have been changed for security purposes. (Names have also been blanked out during the episode where real names were used accidentley! Oops)
