A podcast about talking to people about things; how original!
Honestly, I just love hearing people tell stories & having a chance to learn about new stuff. Often times that stuff is wrapped around a neat job, hobby, or piece of media we need to talk about.
New episodes out every other Sunday!

So technically the bulk of this story is in 2022, but this movie makes no sense, so we're rolling with it! Listen as we attempt to justify how this B-movie scenario could be worse than our own climate collapse! Enjoy as we break down the Unspoken Code of Brothers. Ep. 101
We're back from our break and we've brought a real doozy of an artifact: Mazes & Monsters (1982) starring Tom Hanks.
Listen as Brayden Scobie and I dissect this made-for-TV movie that's CERTAINLY NOT about Dungeons and Dragons. We attempt to understand what causes Tom Hanks' prolonged mental breakdown, to assess how closely this fictionalized story follows the real event, and what is up with Jay Jay's hats!
Be sure to go see Brayden in meatspace at Hexagon Board Game Cafe for drop-in D&D, watch his streaming show Tomes & Tombs, and go listen to our podcousins Fanimorphs - The Dork Bajir Chronicles: An Animorphs Podcast

Our very first guest returns to complete the circle, as best we can, Dustin Meisinger joins us to discuss the Star Wars Story we hadn't seen back in episode 1: Solo (2018).
He and I work through our feelings on Solo, both the movie and the character. We discuss what works, what doesn't, and where this film falls in our (readjusted) Star Wars rankings. Also we speculate about Episode 9, because of course we do.

We discuss living within a fatphobic world, how that affects your state of mind and the state of your body. We talk about the difference between how you look and what you can do. We try to untangle the hydra of media depictions of bodies to see if that gets us any closer to an understanding of body diversity & pride in our own meatsacks.

Ep. 88
Winter has come! Jodie McRobbie & Dustin Meisinger are here to gush about seasons 1-7 of Game of Thrones!
Who will win this decade-long series? What has been some of the best (or worst) parts of this journey so far? Who are our favourite characters and who can just get roasted by dragonfire? What about the BOOKS? So give this episode a listen as you build up hype for the final season of Game of Thrones.
CW: Game of Thrones involves lots of violence, sexual violence, and the like, so heads-up as we're talking about the whole series.

Ep. 87
The 2019-set movies keep coming with the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle The Running Man (1987). Joel Taras is here to talk about it!
We discuss how close we are to having a national deathmatch gameshow in our own timeline, because we're really not that far off. Also lots of sweet Arnie-isms, quaint 80's technology, and how - once again - scifi from the late 80's really hit the nail on the head when it comes to assuming we'd be in a dystopia by now.
CW: sexual violence - Because it's an 80's action movie, there's 2 scenes in particular that revolve around (the threat of) assault that we discuss.

Ep. 86
Dustin Meisinger returns to continue our breakdown of movies set in 2019; this week is the grandaddy of them all: Blade Runner (1982).
We talk about their trench coats and flying cars, we discuss the impracticalities of pyramidal skyscrapers, and we also try to decode the blurred line between human and robot (by asking a lot of questions about robot genitals). Also we didn't watch 2049, so please ignore our ignorance.
CW: This episode involves discussions of consent & sexual assault, because Blade Runner is a film made in the 80's.

Jarred McClure and I talk about vampires again! This time it's 2009's Daybreakers.
In this version of 2019 the world is mostly vampires, but blood is a dwindling resource and only a blood doctor & Willem Dafoe can save the day! We cover the attempted allegories and themes, how vampires rarely work in scifi, and how our 2019 could learn a thing or two from this movie. #morecrossbows

Brayden Scobie returns to, yet again, talk about D&D stuff. This time: Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God (2005).
We watched the second D&D movie and it was refreshingly more of a Dungeons and Dragons film than the 2000 one. We discuss how, sometimes, simpler is better; or at least has more personality than a generic fantasy movie with a branded title.

Marina Power is here because Akira (1988) is set in 2019!
We go through this groundbreaking film seeking out the ways in which it accurately predicted our current timeline, stuff that didn't quite happen, and for the things we would carry over into our own 2019. Sufficed to say: this Japanese cyberpunk psychic-god-boy story got a surprising amount of things right, or at least less dystopian than the world we currently live in.

Dustin Meisinger & I saw Venom (2018) and we're gonna talk about it and the character it was based on.
We go over all the weirdness of this Sony film, as well as our own histories with the character, through comics, cartoons, and video games. Not only that, but we speculate as to what could be next for this Spider-Man-less Spiderverse that Sony is brewing up.

Let's talk about art! And let's do it at the Art Gallery of Alberta!
This episode consists of two conversations: one with the HIVE Youth Council & one with the head of Education and Learning at the AGA: Dara Armsden.
Both conversations try to answer the question: what is our relationship with art, as producers and as consumers? We discuss where to find new artistic inspiration, the Edmonton art community, and the blocks that impede our engagement with art.

Ep. 65
Theatrical designer Sofia Lukie is here to talk all about exactly that!
We break theatre design down into some broad categories - lighting, sound, set, costumes, projections - in order to discuss what makes these elements work & what makes them fall flat. We chat about our own personal design tendencies and how designers adapt for modern audiences; the ones who require more than just smoke machines and a spotlight to get their butts into the theatres' seats.

Substitute teacher by day, blogger by night Sareeta Lopez joins us to talk about her work: Flight & Scarlet.
We discuss how she began writing for herself, then others, regarding feminism, financial management, trying to balance personal/professional well-being, and other general 'how to adult' topics. We figure out what the best life-hacks are and whether or not a life-hack is really just something we should've learned in school. Sareeta also survives the very first Lightning Round of random questions I had about goal-setting & organizational methods, so kudos for her.

D&D aficionado Brayden Scobie is here to discuss another vital element of this fantasy universe: the godawful 2000 film Dungeons & Dragons.
We watched the movie and we're going to talk about it. So you don't have to. It's rough, baffling, and not really even worth it for the memes. But it WAS worth it for our spectacular attempt at making sense of this movie.
If you'd like to hear more from Brayden make sure to listen to the The Dork-Bajir Chronicles podcast, you can see his beautiful face on Tomes & Tombs, or visit him in the real world at Hexagon Cafe for some IRL DM'ing.

Ep. 36
Joel Taras is back for more in-depth movie analysis! Today's subject of discussion: Roadhouse (1989) is a movie about cuckolding.
Specifically we break down how explicit this film is in its deconstruction & reassessment of masculinity, sexual fidelity, and the fame of local bartenders. This movie legitimately tackles these issues with some deftness, while also being a ridiculous 80's action movie - it's spectacular.
That all being said, despite this being a pretty light discussion of sexually charged/explicit subject matter from a silly movie, there is some content discussed within regarding sexual violence - so if that's something you'd prefer to avoid, use your discretion with this episode & this movie. Content Warned.

So if you're curious about cycloptic cheese or you're just looking for a new party treat (it's Devils on Horsebacks), this is the episode for you!

Ep. 30
We're not playing around here. Joel Taras & I sit down to compare our lists ranking ALL of the live-action Marvel and DC comic book movies. That's right: 82 movies across 7 decades of film-making all broken down in a totally appropriate amount of time to be spent talking about superhero movies.
So strap in and get ready to dive into a conversation that's almost three times longer than a bunch of movies on this list. Can't imagine a better way to catch up before Avengers: Infinity War!
Here are the lists.
Ask Joel about more comic book things via his Instagram!

Who else but Sophie Gareau-Brennan could be on the show to talk about how much we love pizza?!
We break down our favourite kinds of pizzas/toppings; we discuss the differences between all the local & international pizza joints; we reveal our own personal pizza histories; all of it as a way to show how much we truly love this glorious category of food.
Perhaps Sophie and I will talk more about food in the future. Perhaps you could begin following us talking about food on Twitter.

Ep. 28
2 returning guests on this episode! Emanuel Dubbeldam & Sophie Gareau-Brennan are here to have a chat about masculinity and what makes a man.
We break down what it takes to be a man the only way we knew how: by using the 5-line chorus of Mulan's 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' as our starting model of masculinity. We continue to discuss the gender politics & sexual identity issues raised in the film via the Internet classic: Am I Gay?: A Journey of Self Discovery with Shang (seriously, who made this meme-gem?!). We also talk about the various real-life or fictional men & women in our lives who helped shape our perceptions of masculinity & femininity.
Go follow Emanuel on Twitter and also go follow Sophie's Twitter for upcoming surprises!
You should also check out Emanuel's first appearance on WenghTalk when we went over Transgender Questions.

Ep. 27
Poet, actress, singer, person, Cristina Filomena is here to talk about her recently published book of poems: Lost. A Collection of Poetry and Prose. We cover the whole journey of how one goes from having their break-up poems in their journal, to having a book of your work published and sold to people for money. We discuss the vulnerability inherent in creativity, poetry, and in online criticism. Cristina also gifts us with a reading of one of her poems!
So make sure to get the book however you can, check out Cristina's Instagram, and keep an eye out for her music.
PS: we forgot to mention that Cristina has a music gig coming up at Blackbird Cafe April 26th 6:30pm as part of her duo: One Fell Swoop.

Ep. 26
Goodness me! An episode with two guests! Marina Power & Sophie Gareau-Brennan join me on an adventure with one of the most impactful films of all time: 1997's Titanic. We talk about our memories and histories with this movie; we check back in after watching the movie ourselves to debrief; we expand our understandings of this movie through the 'Jack is Jacqueline' theory, the parody film Thumbtanic, and through Marina's Lord of the Rings/Titanic fan-fiction. Sufficed to say, we go through a true rollercoaster of emotions in this one.
You can find Marina on Instagram or on Twitter.
You can also find Sophie on Instagram.

Ep. 24
Hey! Listen! Celeste Birzgalis is here for a full retrospective on The Legend of Zelda franchise!
We work our way through the 15+ entry video game series, falling into tangents and whatnot throughout the way. We suss out what makes a successful game, in our own opinions, be it story, gameplay, or presentation. And of course we have a grand ol' time trying to figure out the timeline and some of the weirdness of the Zelda series.
So hopefully you enjoy our incredibly nerdy, feature-length discussion of some of our favourite games. You can find more amazing nerdy things at Celeste's cosplay page here (https://www.facebook.com/LinktotheCharizardCosplay/).

Ep. 25
Sophie Gareau-Brennan & I begin a possible new chapter in the WenghTalk story: retrospectives on obscure 90's cartoons like Mummies Alive!
We address how ridiculous all of this is, how this was an era of cartoons long forgotten (even to those who were kids when it happened), and the impossible economics of the museum that Presley's mom works for.
So if you remember this series, please let us know! It is incredibly difficult to find & I would LOVE to continue through this gem of a cartoon.

Clap your hands together (in what may seem like a prayer) for fellow Collective Legacy podcaster Tessa Simpson, as we immediately dive into spoilery talk about Fullmetal Alchemist.
We discuss how we first got into manga/anime, how we discovered the series - be it by book or by one of the two animes - who our favourite characters are, why you should avoid the Netflix film, and SO MUCH MORE. Seriously folks, we pretty much just gush about FMA for like 90 minutes; it's great.
You can find more of Tessa on either of her shows: Rollin' Solo (http://collectivelegacy.org/our-podcasts/rollin-solo/) and Fanimorphs: The Dork-Bajir Chronicles (http://collectivelegacy.org/our-podcasts/fanimorphs/) wherever you get your podcasts. Ep. 20
With us to break down the intersection of feminism, hip-hop, and language is educator and poet: Adriana Onita.
We trace the evolution of women in hip-hop and rap from the passive objects seen in 80's/90's gansta rap to the archetype-breaking feminine subjects of such artists as Azealia Banks & Snow Tha Product. We discuss rap as a pedagogical resource, as well as a means of expressing or playing with one's identity - especially in regards to women of colour.
You've got lots of artists to listen to on this episode, so make sure to do your homework; and while you do, check out Adriana's company For the Love of Language (http://www.fortheloveoflanguage.ca/) & her multi-lingual poetry magazine The Polyglot (http://www.thepolyglotmagazine.com/). UK-based, Canadian born, actor and playwright Kara Chamberlian defies the time/space continuum to speak with us about her theatre company Crossline Theatre, their previous works, and their upcoming show Just About Home.
We chat about Kara’s experience moving into the British theatre community; how feminism, pornography, and theatre intersect; and how Crossline strives to inspire playful discussion amongst audiences.
If you're so lucky to be in London on March 19th, you can be a part of Just About Home's Scratch Night performance; details here (http://www.coryhaas.ca/projects).

From rants about the fourth Twilight book, to what makes a good book, and to 5 must-read books (or series), we cover pretty much everything under the sun when it comes to book readin’. So get ready for a whole shwack of homework on this episode, cause our conversation hits all topics and types of books that you should certainly check out!

Professional theatre artist Samantha Jeffery is here to discuss her pilot project: #YEGTheatreStats - a professional theatre database of jobs in the Edmonton theatre industry based on gender.
We go over how Sam collects and presents her data; the nuance of creating categories and sub-categories in order to make her spreadsheet accurate, yet readable; and we also talk about how vital a public database of this sort is for those seeking to recognize their hiring trends within the Edmonton theatre community.
You can read the spreadsheet here (https://jefferysl.wixsite.com/yegtheatrestats) and, if it's within your power, you can support Sam and this project by donating to her Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/Yegtheatrestats).

Sitting down with us to explore the mind, body, and spirit connection is yoga instructor and practitioner Kavita Sundar.
We'll go over how one develops a practice - in whatever activity gets you into the zone - as well as how yoga can be seen as aways happening. We gush about how important breathing is and how we should strive to take the time to observe the present moment. In addition we discuss all the ways Rainbow Connection holds inclusive, productive safe spaces for those looking to participate more with the community around them.

Ep. 14
ooOOoo! It's a spooky episode, with guest Erika Ashton, as we go through our 15-ish favourite horror movies.
We discuss why we love the horror genre and what makes a good (or bad) horror movie. We spoil a ton of old movies that you should probably already have seen by now. We provide you listeners with an appropriate amount of horror homework (32+ movies to watch). Most importantly, we shout out the spectacular final resting place for Edmonton movie rentals: The Lobby where you can get so many of the movies we talked about and more; or you can just go chat with the equally-spectacular Kevin in-store or via the dark magicks of the Interweb.
Don't forget to visit Erika's lovely Instagrams or here if you too want to get into the horror conversation!

Ep. 13
Our lovely guest for this episode is modern day alchemist Josh Smith: the man behind Libertine Fragrance. He's here to tell us all about his journey into the smell game and his resulting brand, which he accurately describes as "fragrance for sensual enjoyment."
Josh lays out how he gets from an idea, to a candle-lit laboratory filled with small bottles of smelly things, and then to a crafted & packaged product made for those who'd like a little bit of heart to their scent. So if you've ever wanted to learn about the invisible art of smells, the tension between artistry & branding, or that there are worse perfume ingredients than cat butt gland, then this is the episode for you!
Please go visit Josh's site https://www.libertine-fragrance.com/ in order to smell as wonderfully as I personally do - probably even better, as I only have 1 perfume, so you should probably get at least 2. Also check out Mr. Smith's Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/libertine_fragrance/) if you'd like something a more saucy.

Ep. 12
In the chair today is none other than video game speedrunner, among other things, Lance Mudryk. He's here to give us a crash course on the Speedrun community: what they do, why they do it, and how one goes from casual gamer to shaving seconds off a GoldenEye run.
We define a bunch of video game terms, discuss why speedrunners tend to focus on older/retro games, and reminisce about Justin.tv - or as you younglings might now it as Twitch.
If you'd like to take a look at Lance's first world record you can do so here (https://rankings.the-elite.net/~Taber/time/143194) or see all of his Speedrun-goodness here (https://rankings.the-elite.net/~Taber).

Poet Liam Coady stops by to talk about art, poetry, and generously offers us an exclusive sneak-peek of his upcoming book: 'This Love is Mad Reciprocal', featuring 2 performed poems by the man himself.
We explore the relationship between spoken & written word; we bear witness to the artifacts of creative impulses; we discuss how a book of poems can feel like a mixtape or playlist; and we strive to record despite the efforts of the Illuminati & the Ghosts of Self-Promotion!
Liam's book is available February 22, 2018 via Glass Buffalo (https://www.glassbuffalo.com/chapbooks/this-love-is-mad-reciprocal), or you can check out his release party that night at The Sewing Machine Factory (https://www.facebook.com/events/1597088990385775/). Ep. 10
Our guest today is none other than hobbyist & house-painting wunderkind Nick Eaton, here to discuss the relationship between building a thing - whether that thing is a chair, a painting, or a business - and art.
We talk about art as a product and a process, that perhaps 'craft' is the application of skill, how Nick's theatrical school led him to start his own painting company, and the best place to get pedestal sinks for your theatrical production! All of this and more for your waiting ears.
You can follow Nick on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/oddballeaton/) if you'd like to see the things he builds, or if you need some commercial painting expertise.

Welcome the spectacular Sophie Gareau-Brennan (www.instagram.com/sophiegareaubrennan) to the show! We're talkin' musicals on this one. We've got a whole shwack of them we're going to go through. Some of them we've seen, some of them are movies, and some of them we briefly mention with promises to talk about them later! If this conversation got anymore exciting, we would have broken into copyright-free song & dance; though we didn't so you'll just have to do with us talking.

On the mic for this episode is tattoo artist, and swell gentleman, David Carnduff (www.instagram.com/dtctattoos)! He's here to talk with me about the practicalities of working with ink and human flesh. We discuss colour blending techniques, body harmonics, the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, and applying art practically in your life.
Not only that, but we also lay out the plans for a crowd-sourced tattoo live-stream. So comment down below if YOU'D be interested in sparing a few bucks in order for us to set up a WenghTalk Radio Pink Pterodactyl/Flamingo tattoo live-stream. Seriously. BRRAAH! Guest Emanuel Dubbeldam graciously joins us this episode to help answer some possible questions you, and myself, have about transgender terminology, experiences, and common misconceptions regarding our understanding of the "spectrum-ception" that is 'Transgender'.
We talk about the subtly of gender neutral language, a nifty "Genderbread Person", and we solve sexism and transphobia all in one conversation! In all seriousness though, we truly hope to have helped even one person find the words to describe themselves or others in a respectful & accurate manner.
You can follow Emanuel on Twitter or Instagram @uhmanyel, watch his video [www.facebook.com/emanueldubbeldam/posts/10156916887634307?pnref=story] or get in touch with his group: Francophonie Jeunesse de l'Alberta [www.fja.ab.ca].

Ep. 4
Join my past-self and Edmonton artist Lisa Jones (www.lisajones.info) as we discuss how she recreates life with paint, the purpose of those little placards in galleries, and a "Nazi Jesus Teddy Bear Painting". More to the point, we talk about how pulling beauty from all the ugliness in the world for your art can serve as a type of self-healing; and that's really dope.
Check out her website or [www.instagram.com/jonesiest] or [www.facebook.com/ArtbyLisaJones] to see all of her amazing art! Music credits:
