Theology Curator with Kurt Willems: Recent Episodes

Kurt Willems

Theology Curator is hosted by Kurt Willems (formerly, The Paulcast). Each episode reflects on a theological, formational, or cultural theme. We might dig into the life and letters of a radical Jewish teacher named Paul; converse about a pressing contemporary issue; reflect on the nature of following Jesus today; or even remedy doom-and-gloom preaching with a good old fashioned dose of hope.

This show is an invitation to build bridges between the first century world of the earliest Christ-followers into the twenty-first century reality we now inhabit. The Jesus we excavate from the rubble of tradition might just surprise us all.

Subscribe via iTunes | Spotify | Google | Stitcher | Audible Kurt Willems has a conversation with Tara Beth Leach about her important new book, Radiant Church: Restoring the Credibility of Our Witness. Here's what Kurt said in his endorsement:

"No doubt about it, Christianity has a bad reputation problem in the USA. But that is not how it is supposed to be. The Scriptures offer us a vocation: to be people who bear the loving light of God. In Radiant Church, Tara Beth Leach does something radical: she looks to Jesus first, the light of the world in human flesh. Jesus calls us to know him and live like him in such a way that radical love should be what we are known for, not bigotry, hypocrisy, patriarchy, polarization, racism, political ideology, or any other negatively loaded label. Rather than watering down the Bible to make Christianity more palatable for our culture, she invites us to drink deeply of its story, to become people known for radiating God's beauty and goodness to our world. Read this prophetic book, and let's take up the abundant resources of Jesus together so we can put his vision of a Radiant Church on full display."

In this episode, Kurt and Tony explore Jesus' temptation in the desert to have the power of the kingdoms of this world and Judas' betrayal from God's kingdom to those kingdoms. How did Jesus respond? As a servant-King. He models 'power under' rather than the power of the sword. The church in the USA often misses the mark in this regard. Judas betrays Jesus just like we betray his call to engage in politics in a radically different way.

Welcome to a series called, The Bible. This series is both podcast and newsletter based. For the newsletter version go to https://TheologyCurator.com/newsletter. Subscribe there and get every text-based version of this ongoing series as they release.

Series: The Bible is a confusing book, without a doubt. There are simple truths that can be easily distilled from the New Testament (God is love, Jesus died to heal the world, we can know God through the Spirit, etc.), but it is ultimately a book that came into being 2,000+ years ago. This series explores the "why," "what," and "how" questions about the Scriptures. This isn’t so we can become filled with more information alone, but so that we can step into our own unique place in the story of God.

Tony Scarcello shares about his new book, Regenerate: Following Jesus after Deconstruction. Kurt Willems wrote the forward, so this is a personal episode you won't want to miss!

Kurt said the following about this book: "In Regenerate, you not only get Tony’s tragically hope-filled story, but you’re invited to encounter the gift of the Jesus he’s discovered under the wrappings of legalism and shame. Tony isn’t only an example of someone following Jesus after deconstruction, but shows us that God is gently calling each of us to be regenerated through our pain, doubts, and questions. I’m so grateful he wrote this book and couldn’t be more excited for you to read it too!"

In this episode, Kurt Willems 1) gives a broad background to the issues, 2) looks at the Romans Road as something that is an example of the wrong grid for the book, and 3) offers a 'within Judaism' approach to the audience and purpose of Romans.

Andy Stanley. He said that "Peter, James, Paul elected to unhitch the Christian faith from their Jewish scriptures, and my friends, we must as well." And, taken on its own, that is a radical statement that has caused a bit of a dust up. But, in this episode, Kurt both defends him as not a heretic, but also points toward a better path of understanding the relationship between second temple Judaism and the New Testament. What's in a name? When it comes to Paul the Apostle, quite a bit. It's likely that you've heard that Paul the lover of Jesus used to be Saul the hater of Christians. The name change was an identity shift. In this episode, Kurt confronts this idea as a myth.

This is an interview episode with emerging biblical scholar, Christoph Heilig. We spend much of our time discussing a new volume, which engages the work of NT Wright, called God and the Faithfulness of Paul. Seriously, get this book!

Here's a full bio:

Together with his wife Theresa, Christoph Heilig has studied theology in Gießen, St Andrews and Göttingen from 2009-2014 with a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation. He has received a Master of Letters in “Biblical Languages and Literature” from St Mary’s College (University of St Andrews) with a work on lexical semantics of the New Testament. His research aims at combining insights from the philosophy of science with the study of the New Testament books within their cultural contexts. Since October 2014, he has been working at the University of Zurich on a research project funded by the Swiss National Fond on narrative structures in Paul's letters. His publications include Hidden Criticism? Methodology and Plausibility of the Search for a Counter-Imperial Subtext in Paul (Mohr Siebeck 2015 and Fortress 2017) and Paul’s Triumph: Reassessing 2 Corinthians 2:14 in Its Literary and Historical Context, (Peeters 2016). He blogs about his research on the "Zurich New Testament Blog," which can be followed on Facebook. Some of his works can be accessed on his academia-page.

Dr. Angela N. Parker has a Ph.D. in Bible, Culture, and Hermeneutics (New Testament focus) from Chicago Theological Seminary. Angela’s book entitled Bodies, Violence, and Emotions: A Womanist Study of σῶμα (body) and πτῶμα (fallen body) in the Gospel of Mark is currently under contract with Wipf & Stock. Reading through the lens of womanist and postcolonial thought, Angela’s work addresses the issue of bodies falling as a result of imperial violence in the Gospel of Mark. The issue of fallen bodies is especially important for contemporary Christian communities who witness police violence against black and brown bodies.

Prior to receiving her Ph.D., Angela earned the Master of Theological Studies degree from Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Shaw University, a historically black institution in Raleigh, North Carolina. Ordained as a Baptist minister and well-versed as a teacher in the church, Angela’s academic teaching experience comprises courses in New Testament and Biblical Greek. When not teaching or writing, Angela enjoys time spent with her husband, Victor, as they explore all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. When not in the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Parker often travels to North Carolina to spend time with her children and grandchildren.

Areas of Research

New Testament Text and Context, The Gospel of Mark, Pauline Epistles and Theology, Womanist Biblical Interpretation, Theology and Ethics, Contemporary Hermeneutical Strategies, and Postcolonial Theory

This is a conversation with scholar and author Matthew Bates. We talk about a little word with a big meaning: pistis. This Greek word is often translated "faith" or "faithfulness" but we discuss how it might be better to translate it as "allegiance."

Matthew W. Bates is Associate Professor of Theology at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois. Bates holds a Ph.D. from The University of Notre Dame in theology with a specialization is New Testament and early Christianity. His books include Salvation by Allegiance Alone (Baker Academic), The Birth of the Trinity (Oxford University Press, 2015), and The Hermeneutics of the Apostolic Proclamation (Baylor University Press, 2012). This series explores Paul's vision for how women fit into the announcement that Jesus is Lord. It argues that Paul was an egalitarian, believing that women should be included (without distinction) in leadership roles within the church and home. Paul did not believe that women were "the same" as men, but that they equally offer gifts to the community as leaders, teachers, pastors, bishops, etc. This series will demonstrate why Paul was pro-women.

This is an interview with new author, Alice Connor. Her book, Fierce: Women of the Bible and Their Stories of Violence, Mercy, Bravery, Wisdom, Sex, and Salvation, seeks to excavate the neglected stories of women in biblical tradition.

Walter Brueggemann says that... "The “old, old story” concerns “All the king’s men” or “All the president’s men.” The “new, new song” is about all the women who belong to the coming realm of liberty and justice. Alice Connor is a skillful artist who knows how to transpose old, old stories into new, new songs. In her lively imagination the old old stories do not stay old. They are powerfully and accessibly new and contemporary for our time and place. Connor knows that “feminism” is about power. She shows how these ancient stories are filled with powerful futures."

We chat about Paul's church ladies and other biblical themes, as well as the journey from idea to book.

Catch up with Alice at her website: Fierce Ass Women.

In this series of occasional episodes, Kurt discusses some practical tools for learning biblical Greek on your own. You don't have to attend seminary or enter a "classics" program to learn this language. You do need a plan.

In this first episode, Kurt maps out what he thinks is the most accessible approach to learning Greek, if you are a self determined learner.

It won't be easy. You will have to build Greek into your life. Perhaps build out appointments with Greek that you keep nearly legalistically :-) But it will be worth it.

In this episode, Kurt gave an inside look at William Mounce's Greek resources in his 'Basics of Biblical Greek' series.

Kurt recommends going 'all in' and purchasing the Basics of Biblical Greek Pack, which includes: the BBG textbook, workbook, flashcard set, Get an A! study guide, vocabulary audio CD, and full chapter lectures DVD.

*For just the book: BBG

*For the workbook: Workbook

*For the entire course: BBG Pack

*Also, Kurt forgot to mention, but the BBG Pack works great with the free course that the author, Mounce, offers on his website here: Greek 1 Course. Utilize his free vocab software, built into the class format, called "Flashworks"!!!!

*Other tips include carving out time in your schedule and mapping out a plan to go through each chapter in a reasonable amount of time. If this is your "second shot" at Greek, you may be able to go through this book quicker than the average first time student. To "refresh" your Greek might take two months, where to learn Greek for the first time might take closer to 4-6 months (or less, depending on the time you can invest).

*Also, Kurt highly recommends the Sing and Learn New Testament Greek CD resource as a companion to this curriculum pack.

*Lastly, I mentioned a "conversational" learning method as well which I will return to in future episodes. But the best option of this approach of self-learners is Conversational Koine.

This episode asks the question: What is "covenantal nomism?" It is possible you have never heard of this phrase before, but for anyone studying Paul, it is crucial that you have a basic understanding of this concept as it pertains to second temple Judaism. This episode give a "101" version of covenantal nomism, a sort of introduction to why it is significant for the study of Paul.

Download the Guide (This a free book buying guide for last minute Christmas shoppers!)

This is the final episode in this series. In one hour (a long episode!) you will get an immersion into the book of Revelation, including how to deal with the question of violence!

The end of the world. The end of the ages. The rapture. The Great 7 Year Tribulation. The Anti-Christ. The second coming. All of these themes come out of various versions of Christian theology. Some of them were embraced by Paul. Many of them would seem absurd to him.

In The End Times in Paul and Others, Kurt Willems examines Paul's "end times" theology, seeking to understand his own expectations of the Second Coming through a historical lens. Then, Kurt compares various other New Testament authors' perspectives on the end as well. Do they line up? Does Paul envision a future tribulation and a rapture? What about Jesus? Revelation? And others?

If you are tired of end times madness but want to know what the historical Paul believed and taught, this series is for you. But it doesn't stop there, in an uncharacteristic move for The Paulcast, we will devote full episodes to other relevant texts from outside of the Pauline epistles!

If you want to buy a great gift for the armchair theologian in your life, especially if they are interested in Paul (who isn't?! hahah), then this guide will be your friend.I want to save you trouble. You don’t have to guess. If your significant other, friend, or family member loves to read up on theology, these books on Paul will most-likely be a “win!"

I've created this free resource for you, all I ask is that you share this link on social media to help spread the word to all the last minute shoppers out there!

In this free pdf guide, you will find three types of books:

Introduction Level Books on Paul

These are books that an average reader of Paul can pick up and enjoy. At the same time, because I picked them, you can be sure that they are loaded with insights and aren’t weak on content.

Accessible but More Academic

Here’s the deal, the only thing separating the first two sections is that this category assumes some prior knowledge about the conversation about Paul. Still highly readable.

Scholarly Books

This is for the “heavy-hitter” armchair theologians in your life. These likely include more Greek words and are longer. If they are on my list, however, I guarantee that they aren’t dry and boring.

This special edition episode of The Paulcast is a sermon that Kurt gave at Pangea (Seattle, WA) the Sunday after the 2016 Elections. He looks at the way social media and life filter us from authenticity and God's glory. His texts come out of Exodus and 2 Corinthians as he explores Paul and unveiled Christianity. It is not a "historical" or "theological" episode, per se, but more of a pastoral approach with those scholastic things running in the background.

In this episode, Greg Boyd chats with Kurt Willems about spiritual warfare in Paul and others. This is a pastoral and theological conversation, more so than an issue focused only on the historical Paul. But, from time to time, these conversations are fun as well!

Paul didn't just sit around and pontificate lofty theological ideas from a chamber flowing with the finest wines and grains of abundance. Not even close. Paul, although an intellectual, was a practitioner. For him, theology is always practical.

In Paul's short letter to Philemon, he challenges power structures of the day by contending for peace between a slave owner (Philemon) and a runaway slave (Onesimus). According to our friends at The Global Immersion Project, peacemaking in the way Jesus involves several practices: SEE, IMMERSE, and CONTEND—with the dream of eventual restoration. In this letter, Paul has clearly taken time to SEE the humanity of both of these men, he has IMMERSED in their stories, and now must contend for the life of Onesimus. This letter is peacemaking 101, folks! So good!

In light of the current challenges we see in social media land, family relationships, and church dynamics in the aftermath of the Orlando mass shooting of 49+ LGBTQ persons, peacemaking couldn't be more relevant today. Listen along as we learn from Paul how to enter spaces of conflict.

In this special edition of The Paulcast, Kurt explores a topic that is on the hearts and minds of many people in the aftermath of the horrific shooting that took place in Orlando. 50 lives were lost. 49 lives were lost because of one thing: their identity. LGBTQ persons continue to struggle to find equal footing in our society, and this tragedy is another reminder of how far our culture has to go to make a safer and more humanizing world.

Questions are often raised, during times like this, about how the Scriptures speak to issues pertaining to sexuality. In this episode of The Paulcast, Kurt explores the Roman vision of sexuality and virtue and how Paul confronted such ideals of hierarchy with a better way: the way of love. Is Paul homophobic? Doubtful. Was Paul speaking to issues of same-sex practices that are the same as what LGBTQ folks advocate for today as blessed before God in the context of covenantal marriage? That is a "debatable matter." What isn't up for debate, however, is Paul's insistence that Christ-followers of differing convictions belong at the same table. Without solving the "who is right?" question, Kurt offers some observations about gender in the ancient world that 'traditionalists' and 'progressives' tend to interpret differently.
