On this episode, Irma and Smiley shared their experience participating in the 2023 MISOL advance parole study abroad program. In the previous episode, we had heard from three participants and in this episode, we hear from two additional participants. Irma and Smiley share their experiences with the program, returning to Mexico, and learning about culture, identity, and history. Listen as they share their stories and their experiences.
Diana, Dulce, and Yoana participated in the 2023 MISOL advance parole study abroad program and they had the opportunity to return to Mexico. In this episode, Marco Bravo shares his story of returning to Mexico after growing up undocumented in the U.S.A. Marco graduated from a Madison High School in 2011 and then graduated from Edgewood College in 2015, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish. Marco also received his English-Spanish Language Interpretation certification from Madison College.

In this episode, we learn about all the amazing work that the African Center for Community Development is doing. We speak with Tunji Lesi, CPA, Ama Mohammed, and Sarriang Ceesay. Tunji is the president, Ama is the community outreach coordinator, and Sarriang is the Undocumented Immigrant Support manager. The African Center for Community Development is a nonprofit organization that promotes the well-being of the immigrant African community in Madison and Dane County. The organization was developed by members of the African Association of Madison in 2014 and became active in 2018. The organization supports the increasing African population in the area through services including education, employment, immigration, and family reunification. The center has the following programs: Community Financial Literacy, Undocumented Immigrant Support, Housing Support, and Youth programs which include the Transitional Cultural Literacy program.

Hello and welcome to another episode of Educators and Immigration. It has been a while since I have released an episode. The reason is because I was traveling with our guests for today Erika Rosales and Yesenia Villalpando-Torres. We are the steering committee for the Mexico International Study Opportunity for Learning (MISOL) program and this December and January, we had a cohort of 18 participants who traveled to Mexico for a life-changing opportunity.
Erika and Yesenia are strong activists for the immigrant community at the local, state, and national levels. They are always looking for ways to support undocumented, DACAmented, and immigrant populations.
Erika Rosale is the Director for the Center for DREAMers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and she was a guest on this podcast back in episode 009 where we discussed the Center and all the amazing work they are doing. Additionally, she is a Diversity and Inclusion Specialist at WIDA which is housed within the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER). Erika is also a 4W Director of Immigration and Human Rights.
We also have Yesenia Villalpando-Torres who is a Project Assistant for the Center for DREAMers. She is also an Immigration Affairs Social Worker for Dane County Department of Human Services where she works to support immigrants throughout the entire county. She is an inspirational community leader and activist. She works with community to establish programs and services. For example, she set up a DACA renewal event to connect individuals with lawyers and financial resources for their renewal process.

Dr. Julissa Ventura is an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership (EDPL). Before coming to Marquette, Dr. Ventura was a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Education and Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research sits at the intersections of Latinx education, critical youth studies, and community-based education. Through critical ethnography and participatory methods, Dr. Ventura’s research sheds light into the different ways in which community-based spaces and practices foster Latinx students’ sense of belonging, academic identities, and critical consciousness. As a community-based researcher, Dr. Ventura prioritizes relationship-building and the knowledges of Latinx communities in her work in order to build equitable and mutually beneficial research partnerships for social justice. Dr. Ventura has engaged in community partnership work in Madison, WI and is excited to work on new and existing partnerships between Marquette University and Milwaukee communities through her research and teaching.

Alondra Garcia is currently a 2nd Grade Bilingual Teacher for the Milwaukee Public Schools. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish and Communication from Cardinal Stritch University. Alondra immigrated from Mexico and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Dr. Phitsamay Uy is an Associate Professor of Leadership in Schooling and the Graduate Coordinator for Ed.D Programs. She is also the Co-director of the Center for Asian American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She received her doctorate of education from Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Dr. Uy is a Lao American K-21 educator, a community advocate, and an equity trainer. Her research focuses on the academic achievement of immigrant and refugee students, with a particular interest in Southeast Asian American students. In this episode, we talk with Erika Rosales who is the Director for the Center for DREAMers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Center provides services through a holistic and intersectional approach such as legal, educational, mental & social services, and career resources to the DACA community in Wisconsin through presentations and community outreach as well as support through culturally responsive training.
The Center for DREAMers aims to provide legal representation at no cost for DACAmented recipients across Wisconsin. This involves direct representation as well as community presentations to inform the community through legal clinics.
Through collaboration with the Immigrant Justice Clinic, the Center for DREAMers will provide representation that focuses on:
- DACA renewals
- Applications for Advance Parole
- *Collateral applications, including:
- Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS)
- U Visa
- Asylum
- Employment-based immigrant visas
- Deportation defense

Reyna Montoya @Reynaemontoya is the founder of Aliento, a non-profit organization with the vision of creating a place where human potential is nurtured and not defined by immigration status. Aliento serves undocumented, DACA, and mixed-status families to transform trauma into hope and action.
