Yes we said it- Your spouse is NOT God. If you set expectations on your spouse that you expect from God, then you will get disappointed. In reality, you might actually be placing your spouse above God, as an idol, a god. Honestly we all have experienced this in some sort of way in our marriages. But, we need to get our priorities straight with God in order to have a thriving marriage. There is a godly order to priorities in our relationships: God, your spouse, your children, your family, your church and friends, and so on. But, God wants to be number one in our lives and nothing else!Your spouse is human - they have fallen short before God just like you. So, we shouldn’t be surprised if we do end up unfulfilled or disappointed – it’s because they are not Jesus for you.At the end of the day, your spouse cannot truly make you fulfilled - only Jesus can! You are a child of God FIRST, then wife or husband, then parent, & so on. We share more on different bible verses, how our current walk with God is a major indication, and the topic of divorce...If you would like more from us, we send out our Mission-Minded newsletter every month, with huge updates from The Simple Mission & from our personal life, simple tips, faith & encouragement, & more – sign up here to get the email before next month. https://mailchi.mp/af1cb198f846/t4jxj4xgol Follow on Instagram: https://instagram.com/thesimplemissionFollow David on Instagram: https://instagram.com/davidgbondFollow Lianna on Instagram: https://instagram.com/bondlianna

This is a really crucial episode in order to have a thriving marriage. We feel like this is a silent struggle for many married couples, comparing your spouse to others. We would take it even further and say this is more prevalent in women due of social media but also for men as well. The thing is we cannot put the blame on other people for making us feel resentful or bitter - it is not up to them to make you feel ok with your life. It all goes back to your heart and the way you truly view your spouse. Is it with love and grace? Or comparison, resentment, and discontentment? There are all kinds of ways to be discontented in your marriage, but we are not saying that you have to be joyful even if they never do anything. It is okay to communicate your feelings to them but you have to approach it in the right way and with a right heart. Figure out where the discontentment towards your spouse is coming from. The thing is - they may just not know. But, it is not fair to them to compare to them when they do not know you are dealing with the comparison trap and discontentment. If it is truly stemming from social media, you may have to unfollow people, take a social media break, or even delete your apps/accounts for a season or forever. However, we feel like we only begun to scratch the surface on the subject of comparison within marriage, but we hope you have enjoyed this episode as part of the thriving marriage series and gave you something to think and pray about! If you would like more from us, we send out our Mission-Minded newsletter every month, with huge updates from The Simple Mission & from our personal life, simple tips, faith & encouragement, & more – sign up here to get the email before next month. https://mailchi.mp/af1cb198f846/t4jxj4xgol Follow on Instagram: https://instagram.com/thesimplemissionFollow David on Instagram: https://instagram.com/davidgbondFollow Lianna on Instagram: https://instagram.com/bondlianna

You are not at the end of your relationship journey once you're married. For your love and marriage to keep growing and thriving, you have to realize that the pursuit of your spouse never stops.Think about when you first started dating your now-spouse: you pursued them, called them, texted them, stayed in constant communication,  went on dates weekly or even more, told them you loved them all the time, wanted to spend as much time with them as possible, and more. This passion and fierceness over someone you love - it is not meant to last forever. Three reasons that this type of passionate love does not last: it burns too quickly, it was not meant to sustain us, and it can become like a wildfire, consuming both of you. However, the love for your spouse is more of a gentle fire in the fireplace that warms you and covers you with warmth and security. BUT, you have to keep the fire going.Think on this: there are several types of ways to pursue your spouse through different intimacies: physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and social. This is not to say that we need to always be pursuing them in every area every single day. But it is something to think on when thinking of ways to pursue your spouse (and it's not just in the bedroom!)We get into some ways that we can pursue your spouse; so husbands and wives, listen up for more!If you would like more from us, we send out our Mission-Minded newsletter every month, with huge updates from The Simple Mission & from our personal life, simple tips, faith & encouragement, & more – sign up here to get the email before next month. https://mailchi.mp/af1cb198f846/t4jxj4xgol Follow on Instagram: https://instagram.com/thesimplemissionFollow David on Instagram: https://instagram.com/davidgbondFollow Lianna on Instagram: https://instagram.com/bondlianna

This is episode #4 of our thriving marriage series - halfway there! This will be a tougher episode to digest. We all have said or yelled things to our spouse that we regret or wish we can take back. This is an area that only God can help you in. Only He can give you a softened heart and reveal to you on why you say harsh words or yell. It’s what is from the heart, so that is why we need to check our hearts!God is in the business of changing us from the inside out, so pray over your heart, to rid of the things in your heart that is drawing you away from God and your spouse, for eyes to see what is influencing you (TV, social media, people, music, & such) to treat your spouse this way & cut those off. Most of all, pray for your spouse if this is an area they struggle with too because only God can change their hearts and give them conviction, not you!We have choices to make, daily and each moment, on how we speak to our spouse as well as behind their back. When your tongue goes unchecked, people can get hurt and you may end up hurting yourself as well. The words that we speak LITERALLY speak either LIFE or DEATH over. Speaking negativity or anything else can create an atmosphere of tension in your home. This will not help you to have a thriving marriage - you just are trying to survive. You want to create a home and atmosphere of peace and gentleness and love and forgiveness - that is part of a thriving marriage!Bible Verses Mentioned: Proverbs 21:23 (NLT); Proverbs 18:21 (MSG); James 1:19 (NLT); Luke 6:45 NLTIf you would like more from us, we send out our Mission-Minded newsletter every month, with huge updates from The Simple Mission & from our personal life, simple tips, faith & encouragement, & more – sign up here to get the email before next month. https://mailchi.mp/af1cb198f846/t4jxj4xgol Follow on Instagram: https://instagram.com/thesimplemissionFollow David on Instagram: https://instagram.com/davidgbondFollow Lianna on Instagram: https://instagram.com/bondlianna

Investing in your marriage is the #3 episode of our thriving marriage series and this is a SUPER important one! How do you truly have a thriving marriage? Let's look at marriage like a garden. You have to work and grow it, tend to it, water it, give it sun and shade, and prune the plants. Your marriage can be like a thriving beautiful garden OR it will be full of weeds, decay, and overgrowth due to lack of pruning. If you are not being intentional or taking inventory on what’s going on in your marriage, how will you know HOW and WHERE to invest your time and energy on?This is literally the first step AFTER setting the foundation and being on the same page with the Lord and with each other. You have to invest in your marriage; there is just no way around it. Once you got the foundation settled, it's time to start building on it. We go over 5 ways to start investing in your marriage today!

This is episode #2 of how to have a thriving marriage series - let's get right to it! But, first, let's start out with a question...What foundation is your marriage founded on?Is it God, the world & the culture, or selfishness…truly think on this. If it is not founded on God, then anything that we say or do to “improve” our marriage will not work because it is based on selfishness or following your own heart. But the truth is that in God's world, everything is flipped upside down. Here's a plot twist for you: marriage is not for ourselves. Rather than serving ourselves and our desires, we are to serve one another, like Christ! We each have a God-designed role in marriage: the husband and the wife. Ephesians 5:22-33 covers all the roles for both husbands and wives. The wife is to submit to her husband who represents Christ and the husband is to love his wife, like Christ loves the church. We cover everything on submission, the exceptions to submission, respect, treating each other as equals, and loving one another in this episode for our thriving marriage series! We did a very deep study on Ephesians 5:22-33 on the blog so if you are interested in more, head to the blog post here!---> https://thesimplemission.com/a-focus-on-marriage-ephesians-5-simple-bible-study-part-2/If you would like more from us, we send out our Mission-Minded newsletter every month, with huge updates from The Simple Mission & from our personal life, simple tips, faith & encouragement, & more – sign up here to get the email before next month. https://mailchi.mp/af1cb198f846/t4jxj4xgol Follow on Instagram: https://instagram.com/thesimplemissionFollow David on Instagram: https://instagram.com/davidgbondFollow Lianna on Instagram: https://instagram.com/bondlianna

We are so excited for this episode! This is not just a topic we are passionate about but living the lifestyle of Jesus is something we strive to do daily. Even though we aren't perfect, we share what we've learned on how to live like Jesus and the 3 ways to approach this is just a starting place. If Jesus was with us right now, how would he live in today's current day and age? More often than not, Jesus chose to do life differently and knew where His true identity and worth was in: in His Father alone. This episode covers setting boundaries, choosing silence than the noise, hearing God's voice, the difference between gratitude and discontentment, & slowing down for the sake of the Gospel. We hope you enjoy this episode & God bless! Bible verses mentioned:Psalm 119:36-37, “Cause my heart to bow before your words of wisdom and not to the wealth of this world. Help me turn my eyes away from illusions so that I pursue only that which is true; drench my soul with life as I walk in your paths.”Luke 10:37, "But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.”If you would like more from us, we send out our email newsletter every month, with huge updates from The Simple Mission & from our personal life, simple tips, faith & encouragement, & more – sign up here to get the email before next month. https://mailchi.mp/af1cb198f846/t4jxj4xgol Follow on Instagram: https://instagram.com/thesimplemissionFollow David on Instagram: https://instagram.com/davidgbondFollow Lianna on Instagram: https://instagram.com/bondlianna

We are back after a 9-month hiatus! We have good reason though...we found out we are pregnant and life has changed so much since then. We share updates on our pregnancy so far, when baby is due, our 3-year journey of getting pregnant, & our thoughts on becoming parents.

Also, since it is July, it's about the mid-point of the year so let's check in-- how has your 2023 been going so far? We've already passed the 200 days mark of 2023! Time is literally flying by. We know that sometimes it is time to evaluate, pray, and surrender certain areas of your life over to God. We share our thoughts on what we are surrendering, changing, and how we will be slowing down and taking Sabbaths, especially being inspired by a book we read together, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer.

Today is Halloween Day and we are sharing our thoughts on celebrating Halloween as believers. We share on how we grew up with Halloween, the history behind Halloween, and what we do now according to our personal conviction with the Lord. We bring up scary topics like witchcraft, spiritual realm, and our culture's embrace of darkness. We just want you to be aware of who you allow to influence you because that is who you will become.

We also bring up why this midterm election is so paramount as Americans and the importance of voting to share your voice, values, and beliefs. Honestly, we get a bit heated in the end - possibly giving a rant over why we have it so good here in America. Election Day is on Tuesday, November 8th, but check for early voting where you live.

When you think of real estate investing, do you often think of people like Donald Trump? You might be surprised that ANYONE can start investing in real estate, if they have a plan and have a small amount of savings. This is the episode where we finally share about our investment in real estate even though we are nervous to do so.

Going into real estate investing is a lifestyle that one of us wrestled with. They thought only people like Donald Trump bought and sold real estate to make millions, and it was a greedy practice to always be searching for the next property to flip and lease out.

But, the Bible does say a few things on investing that we share more in this episode. For the rest of the episode, we explain the real estate trends, our experience with flipping and leasing out a house, and all the major tips on before, during, and after buying a property. ALL of these tips are all important things and lessons that we have learned in the last 5 years of real estate investing, so don't miss out on these tips!

A very important question to ask: should a church encourage kids to transgenderism? That is actually what is going on in a church in Katy, TX.

A recent video from being undercover went viral on Twitter, where Taylor Hansen went into the church, asking questions about the church and about the Transparent Closet that they offered as a service to the community. This was no ordinary closet or just giving out clothes to those in need; no, rather there were clothes, specifically to dress for the opposite gender or sexuality - this was a space away from their parents and family to express themselves freely in closet.

And, that is not all. The church also recently hosted a drag queen bingo, and there were two different events - one was “family-friendly” and a later event for adults only for 18+…inside a church.

Here is something to remember in all of this: we know we are called to love our neighbors, to love everyone as God loves us. He loves every single person on planet earth, no matter who you are.

But, we are not called to enable people into sin, to support their sin - loving your neighbor does not mean to lead them into more sin; it means sharing the truth in love, even if it is not popular, trendy, or liked.

Listen to what else we have to say, the news about the church, and what it means to truly be a Christ-follower in this world...

Bible Verses Mentioned: 2 Timothy 3:1-5; 2 Timothy 4:3-4; John 8:1-11

Yes, we are talking about dating today! We obviously have not been in the dating world in a long time HOWEVER, we have learned so much since our previous dating era, and we will also share an inside look on one of our dating history lol

We share our thoughts on dating then and now, how to date while pleasing God, and our stance on talking to multiple people at once. Then, we will discuss our opinions on the red flags and green flags while you are dating.

This episode is more geared towards christians, and believers of Jesus Christ who actively live out their faith and desire to date in a righteous, pure, and holy way.

If you are currently dating or engaged with a long time partner, we highly recommend listening to our most popular episode, Our Struggle With Purity During Dating & Engagement, https://thesimplemission.com/08-our-struggle-with-purity-during-dating-and-engagement/

Sometimes, we can look at people around us and wonder, wow, how come I am not there yet? I feel so behind on what I planned to be at this time: still single when you long to be dating; dating when you long to be married; married but long for kids; in college but long to be done with college and live your life; graduated college but haven’t landed the dream job; have 1 good friend but don't have a big friend group that hang out and travel all the time; the list can go on and on

If we are being totally honest right now, we are in the middle of it right now. It is not easy and it is not a fun spot to be in but we are learning from God to still trust Him and know that His plans for us are good and better than ours.

Dealing with disappointment, discontentment, envy, jealousy, and more - these are detrimental to living out God’s purpose for you. We aren’t entitled to what we want - we are called to deny ourselves, die to ourselves, pick up the cross and follow Him.

Of course, God wants us to be happy, joyful, and be at peace, but IN HIM, not in what we want or what we are striving for. Because the truth is, even if we actually do get the things we have longed for, worked for, and prayed for, those things, possessions, and people will never fulfill us, not truly.

We share some messy but helpful ways to deal with feeling behind on your timeline, how to still be joyful for someone when they get the thing you were wanting and praying for, & still praise and trust God even when you don't understand and are still in the waiting.

Hi there! We missed being on the podcast just chatting with y'all - we are doing a quick episode on our thoughts we have had this summer over "summertime" and spending time with God...

Sometimes, we can be so looking forward to summer, mostly to relax, to go on vacations and trips, and just to have the extra time. But how are we truly using and spending our summer time? What are our true priorities?

We hear this saying all the time, "I just want to grow closer to the Lord but I do not have the time," or "I can get to the Lord when all the things on my calendar have been completed this summer." For us, we went on vacation to Colorado and we realized that we can be comfortable in our own house to spend time with God but we kept leaving God in our house all packed up. But God is much bigger than that…

For the rest of summer, we share our struggles on being selfish with our time and not prioritizing God. We are now committed to making a change starting now for finish our summer strong. So, we want to challenge you to start growing closer to the Lord, even when it's really hot and it's that summertime feeling.

We will be officially back in mid-August with our podcast again. Sign up to Mission-Minded, our monthly email newsletter below for updates!

We know that hearing the word “intimacy” may make you scared or want to run away. But what about in marriage?? There are many types of intimacy that we found researching this (12?!) and we think that gets way too complicated and mostly unnecessary to have all of them. We go over 3 major types of intimacy - physical, emotional, & spiritual intimacy. This episode covers all of them in no particular order.

We are going to be very intentional with this episode and only give you two simple ways to create and deepen your relationship with your spouse in ways you might already know but with a twist. And it will also get a but spicy...

Now, onto the the rest of the show notes on Spiritual Highs...

You know that feeling when you go with your youth group to youth camp or go on a mission trip? Do you also know the feeling of when you get home from the journey, reality sets in? Then, you go back to your old routine of doing things and that feeling will be lost in your memories of a time when you were on fire for the Lord. That is the definition of coming down from a spiritual high, which is what we will talk about in this episode.

We as Christians tend to feel the need to chase after being on fire for God, but really, we are chasing after a spiritual high.

The spiritual high almost feels like you are invincible, as if nothing can touch you in the environment you are in. But we forget that we are human and that we succumb to our own shortcomings and failings. That is why we need God’s help through His Holy Spirit. Sometimes, we put pastors, worship leaders, and speakers on a very high pedestal, as if they are the reason why you are on the spiritual high. But, really, they are only vessels of God, just like you and me. We cannot rely on the next church service, christian band concert, conference, or camp in order to get back in touch with God. He is already HERE.

We address the phenomenon of spiritual highs as Christians through the lens of the parable of the sower from Matthew 13. We are called not to just BE on fire for God but to STAY on fire. How is this accomplished? By staying consistent in our relationship with God every day.

We share 6 different ways to stay consistent in your walk with God and you will be able to maintain the spiritual state of being with the Lord instead of relying on the next spiritual high.

However, we understand that there are seasons in life where we do not feel close to God and you cannot hear His voice, the seasons where you are dry and in the desert, searching and wanting God. We share a big encouragement for anyone listening that is needing the push to keep pursuing their relationship with God in the middle of their desert.

Why is it important to speak good words? To reveal if you are a true believer of Jesus Christ or do not know God at all. And, to bring life, not death, to believers and non-believers. We continue on in our James 3 Bible Study and in Part 2, we share examples of good words and examples of bad words and you can see where your words are at now.

This is difficult to do to watch our mouths and continue to speak good towards others and yourself. We all have sinned and have our stumbling blocks, including our words we speak, write, and think. God knows what we are thinking so you cannot hide behind flattery or insincere words. He knows all our thoughts, opinions, judgements, and biases, no matter how evil and cruel they are.

Pray today for God to reveal anything in your heart towards other people, towards God, towards the church, and towards yourself. We also share practical tips on not getting involved in bad words, like gossip, rumors and more, and what to do in those situations.

Do you all feel like what you say gets you into trouble a lot? Is what you are thinking or commenting online not really the best? We all certainly struggle with our words and the power of our tongue can build up or tear down. Often, our words comes from our thoughts and our thoughts comes from our hearts and where our heart is focused on is where we are drawing from.

In this bible study from James 3 on Taming The Tongue, we discuss the context of the chapter and walk you through verse by verse and go over the context as well as share our thoughts. We try our very best to relate this chapter by using our modern day world examples that we all know very well. You will love this bible study just as much as we loved it, so let's study James 3 together and jump into God's Word.

We have two special guests on the podcast: Pastor Clayton & Abigail Sullivan. They are youth and young adults pastors at Church of Hope in Corpus Christi, Texas. We have great conversations on the recent struggles of the youth and how we can better relate to the youth, their thoughts on church hurt and how to overcome the hurt, along with encouragement, and lessons learned from their first year of marriage.

This episode is really eye-opening and you will learn so much from these two God-gifted individuals who are extremely passionate about what they do and love what they do. You can feel it through the speakers, so we hope you loved, learned, and laughed from this episode.

The difficult truth is that there is no perfect forgiveness. We can listen to this episode and do so much better with it, however we are all human and our first instinct is to get angry and hold grudges. That's the truth.

Practicing forgiveness is extremely valuable in your life. Not only does Jesus talk about it a whole lot in the Bible, it is mentioned in other texts outside of the Bible in many other ways. Even if it is one of the most difficult things to do, it can be the most rewarding when we choose to forgive others who have done wrong to us.

Lianna and David share their experiences of un-forgiveness and forgiveness in this episode and about the struggles that they have had in the past from when they did not directly deal with un-forgiveness.

Forgiveness can be difficult and scary to do or to start doing; however, it is your choice and God will guide and give you strength and insights in your forgiveness journey.

We have heard so many stories and experiences regarding church hurt and it really makes us sad because we know what and how the church should be according to God's Word.

The church was designed and built for the lost, to have a safe place to be able to share their experiences and receive the love of Christ in return regarding the denomination or characteristic of the church. Church hurt happens when people lose sight of that, when the people running the church are sinful humans who make mistakes as well as the people attending. So, let's talk about it.

Here are the main points we addressed in this episode:

We shared the results of our Instagram polls on Church Hurt A few examples of church hurt Our personal experiences with church hurt The danger of placing the church or your pastor/leader on a high pedestal The difference between church hurt vs. getting offended easily or not receiving the truth in love well The ugly consequences of not getting over church hurt Reminder of who the true enemy is and why it's important to heal from church hurt An encouragement from an helpful article on getting over church hurt

At the beginning of 2022, Lianna and I (David) became full-time entrepreneurs. No more benefits, no more punching in the clock. We were punching our own clock now and make our own schedules. This episode is all about the transition, struggles, and the real moments of shifting from full-time to your own time and how God is good through it all.

Even through much uncertainty and unknowns, we did not think we would become full-time entrepreneurs until many years down the road. However, everything began to fall into place - we were dreaming about it, talking with people we trusted, and most of all, praying constantly to God on what to do next.

We also share the true behind the scenes of what goes on in a day or week of an entrepreneur, because we really did not know what our lives would look like on a day to day basis and month to month. This process is really fresh for us all this stuff went down in the past few months! So if you are thinking about doing something like this one day or maybe sooner than you think hopefully we addressed some of your questions, doubts and fears.

This is the ULTIMATE 2022 Planning episode for you, but with a twist. Even though this episode is coming out in February, we refuse to believe that it's too late in the game of creating and going over 2022 goals, habits, and schedule. You can start anytime to do “new years” goals and have a plan because a goal without a plan is just a wish. We share a few of our goals and intentions for 2022, before we get into the rest of the episode.

When we look at our goals, dreams, or schedule, how can we partner with God to align with His will and purpose in our schedule, goals, habits, & intentions? We go over 3 ways to align with God and partner with Him within our planning, scheduling, and building our habits.

Because here is the truth: life was not meant and given to us to live out our own agendas, desires, and plans. God wants us to partner with Him because He alone deserves all the glory and He knows everything. He will reveal each day and moment on how to best serve Him and glorify Him in what you accomplish, what you say, and how you love on others.

FIRST episode of 2022! We miss y'all! It’s been about almost 2 months since our last podcast episode, wow. We wanted to share all about how it's been moving into and living in a fixer-upper during renovations. (If you didn't know about us moving, it's all here in the previous episode, EP. 57) We are about 90% percent with the inside of the house. We have been working really hard on it to bring it from the original 1989 to 2022! But, like with all good things, there's always the tough side. Living in a fixer-upper affected us mentally, due to dealing with crazy schedules, hashing out our conflicts, and being out of our routines. We share the real truths and some lessons we've learned as well as advice for you.

AND, SURPRISE...we have our first challenge from The Simple Mission! We are releasing a 14-day Add & Subtract Challenge, which is to push you to be your best self that God has called you to be, starting in the New Year. It starts on Monday, JANUARY 10th and ends on Sunday, JANUARY 23rd

We ask you two questions to give you a head start on thinking and praying about what to do: 1. What is one thing you can "add" into your life for 14 days? 2. What is one thing you can "subtract" out of your life for 14 days?

The whole purpose of the challenge is to get you on a good head start for 2022, but also to help you figure out what is something you have missed doing, always wanted to do, or haven't done yet. But, it's difficult to start something if there are other things that are keeping you from pursuing those things, which is why we call for you to also subtract one thing out of your life.

We share tips, ideas, and examples on what you can add into your life and what to subtract out of your life for 2022 in this exclusive episode, and we also share what WE are going to add and subtract in our lives.

We are ending our season with a little bit of tough love and real truth. What is something that we all do or have done? Make excuses. Making excuses can be very easy, and it can almost be the easy way out. But, what excuses do we make and why do we do it? We share three reasons of why we make excuses and the deeper issues within it. And, then we give you a powerful + fiery encouragement to stop making excuses and follow in whatever God has placed on your heart!

We share our FUN life update and the crazy story of how God opened the door for us to follow through! We also share some details of how taking risks for God is an ultimate step of faith and ties into this finale episode of making excuses.

How do you literally make friends as an adult? We share our thoughts on growing up and having friends in school, and our experiences with friendships from then to now.

To befriend people involves you to step out of your comfort zone and quit being a kid and just to go out and talk to people and get to know them, no matter who they are, their age, their social status, or anything. We have to break the clique mindset that we had in high school We have to do the inviting and that can be scary. Making friends is a choice, and we have chosen to make friends and to live life with.

Now, let's talk about community. Building community begins and ends with you. When you are a part of a community, you feel like you belong and you feel like you have dignity and purpose, even if it's virtual. People generally do not like to feel alone in experiencing what they are feeling. We like to share our feelings and our struggles with others and want to seek relatable connections and experiences.

Sharing our own feelings and what God has done for you can be a personal way of connecting and sharing the good news of the gospel. It can be as simple as sitting in a circle and sharing stories and past experiences. The enemy really wants to isolate us because he knows that we are more stronger together than apart so if there are opportunities to be a part of community, pray and ask God for guidance.

Now, how to start to be a part of a community or to build one? Sometimes, you will have to be the one to start a community where you are at - it can be anything you are passionate about, like an activity, or something you love to do or talk about. It can be at church, where other like-minded believers will be there to encourage you on your walk and relationship with God. Or it involves moving to a different neighborhood that encourages and makes community building a priority. Or just getting creative with where you are at.

Disclaimer: You have to find the balance of building your community and maintaining your friendship & family relationships and your marriage! Just be sure to not neglect all of them for the sake of community. But, remember you can’t do it all and that’s okay - just do what you can and God will honor that.

There are times when we get angry, but there are also times when we are angry ALL the time. After the last year and a half, it seems like many of us are going to bed mad and are waking up mad. But, that is not the life that God wants for us to live. Living in anger or lashing out in anger constantly will hold us back from pursuing fully in our God-given mission and purpose. But, not to worry, for we talk on how we can overcome anger with God's Word.

We are getting real here: we can talk all day long about pursuing your God-given mission, how you can do it, figure out your passions and how it aligns with God’s purpose, and the calling that He has for your life. However, if you are being held back over and over again, with anger, this will become an issue that will follow you every day until it is addressed and worked on with God's help and with people that you trust.

Since the episode is not super structured like it normally is, we will highlight the main points:

What the bible says about anger How anger, in of itself, is actually not a sin The difference between righteous anger and anger that causes you to sin. How anger is part of our emotions, like happiness, sadness, frustration, or many more. Anger can be a front for other deeper, underlying issues We highlight an activity that will change your life in dealing with anger. Tips on how to handle anger in a constructive & righteous way

Bible verses mentioned: Proverbs 6:16-19; Psalm 37:8; Proverbs 22:24; Proverbs 29:22; 2 Timothy 2:23-25; 1 Corin. 15:33

Before you get married, you think you might know everything, did all the research, read all the books, went to pre-marital counseling, and more. But it’s not until you actually step into marriage that you will know and truly experience it and know what it is like to have a spouse and be one together. And, there will be many lessons learned, fights fought, and hard times to be had. Even though marriage seems like the most perfect fairytale ending, like this phrase, "and they lived happily ever after", it's only the beginning, and it's up to both of you to make the best or the worst of it. At the end of the day, the only One who is perfect and sets the example of a godly spouse in marriage is Jesus Christ, not your spouse! It’s important to realize how marriage can change yourself and your spouse differently and also together, for the better or for worse. If you are with the right person, you will both grow into a loving & stronger married couple, living out your God-given mission and sharing the example of a godly marriage for all to witness. This is why we wanted to sit down and share 10 important reflections we have learned & wished we knew before we got married in a Christian perspective.

We are continuing on our conversation on money, but this time, we are going to review how we can manage our money in a biblical way. First, we do a short recap on what we went over from part 1 of how we view money.

Then, we bring up a difficult topic before we get into managing money: the love of money. This is a struggle that all types of people have, not just the rich people. The love of money can change you and not for the best. We can love having money or making money, but loving money itself can lead down a dark road. Many people will go after the get-rich quick schemes in this world, but what will that lead them to? Where will this pursuit of money and wealth ultimately lead them and land in their lives?

Money without financial intelligence is money soon gone.Which means that you will most likely spend your money faster than you make it. However, when we educate ourselves on how to view & handle money biblically, you will be able to make better, wiser, & biblical decision with your money.

So, first off: why are we called to manage our money? It can be easy to fall into the trap of believing your money is your own and you want to keep it for yourself and your family to just have to indulge, have pleasure, have vacations, and do what you want. So, we quickly share the parable of the talents found in Matthew 25:14-30 & the lessons learned with managing money. We are called by God to manage, invest, and use our money as a resource and a tool for His Kingdom. To use it for good - to give away generously, tithing, give it to a worthy cause, invest for your family and children’s future and education, and more.

If this is something that you have not done or done well, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and not know where to even begin. But, God is willing to give His wise advice on what to do in managing your money. There are many biblical & financial resources out there. But, here are three ways to manage your money, even if you are starting for the first time and we share many examples and tips throughout these ways:

1.) Know where you are with your money and understand the ins and outs of your bank accounts.

2.) Set a few small financial goals and personal goals.

3.) Go over all the options & let the fun begin.

The ultimate goal is to make your money work for you, instead of working for it! To do this takes knowledge and understanding of money to be able to better manage your money. You can do it!

Bible Verses Mentioned: 1 Timothy 6:9; Matthew 6:24; Ecclesiastes 5:10; Proverbs 13:11 NLT; Matthew 25:14-30 (READ & STUDY THIS PARABLE!)

Money is important to God. Did you know that? Or did you think money was evil? We want to break down what God says about money, wealth, how to view it, and how to manage. But, first, we have to understand as Christians how we are called to view the money God has given to us. Finances and money in God's eyes is simple and straightforward. But, we want to help you understand money in the way God intended, even if you don't like money, talking or thinking about money or you love wealth.

First, we go over on how to view money & finances in God's ways by going over three crucial points throughout the episode. One important fact is this: Every decision you make with money, whether selling, buying, giving, or investing, reveals your status of your relationship with God and your true view of money.

Then, we switch into the big elephant in the room: TITHING. We bring up an interesting take on tithing based on what we found in theological research and in the Bible - you might be very surprised by both of our thoughts on this. We even almost go into a debate about tithing and giving, and all that.

Bible Verses Mentioned: Deuteronomy 10:14; Deuteronomy 8:18; Proverbs 22:7; Romans 13:8; Colossians 3:23-24; Leviticus 27:30; 2 Corinthians 9:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2;

Jealousy and envy. We've all dealt with having these ugly feelings, emotions, and thoughts about our life and about other people. As we shared in our introduction, we will be sharing some heavier and lighter examples of dealing with jealousy/envy, like longing for marriage, friends, perfect house, start a family, graduate college, having the right look, and more.

We (David and Lianna) share an emotional journey of our waiting season to start a family one day. Over time, God really wrecked both of us, by showing us that it’s okay to let out these feelings of envy and jealousy to Him, because He will not turn away from you. But, we had to allow Him to work and change our heart throughout the process. To celebrate rather than be envious. So, we truly pray and hope this will encourage anyone in their current struggle with envy and jealousy.

Throughout the episode, we first defined and shared examples of what envy and jealousy mean. Then, we dive deeper into why we experience these strong feelings which stems from a place of insecurity and discontentment. Like for example, focusing on what we do not have rather than what we do have, and this does tie into comparison, but it's even deeper than that. (In our last episode, EP 50, we go over dealing with comparison and feeling stuck due to fear, listen to the episode if you would like to listen!)

The ultimate stealer of your joy when you are heavy in envy or jealousy, is either not knowing or you forgetting where your true identity and worth lies in...Jesus Christ alone. Knowing your true identity in Jesus Christ will help you break free from jealousy and envy with contentment.

We present the problems of envy and jealousy within the Bible which is in the book of James. But, just like the problems of jealousy and envy is presented in James, the solutions and answers on what to do is laid out as well. This will take time, to be patient, practice contentment and prayer. So don't beat yourself up if you get jealous or envious for it might happen because we are human. But, we do not have to let it consume us. We are never without hope or without redemption, for God has lined out a path to go back to Him every single time.

Bible Verses Mentioned: James 4:1-3; James 4:7-10; James 3:14-16 ESV; 1 Timothy 6:4, 6-9 NLT; Galatians 5:25-26 NLT; Philippians 4:4-7

We are officially back with season 4! But, we are starting our first episode a bit differently than we've done. We want to have a conversation with YOU. Yes, you, the listeners, and just ask, "How are you?" In the day and age of always being busy, being on our phones, & being on social media constantly, we realize that we hardly put in a practice of taking a pause.  And, we will have some questions that you can answer when you have the chance to be quiet and think for a while & pray to the Lord.

Here are some questions we ask on the episode:

Who are you following or allowing yourself to be influenced by? Where are you truly spending a majority of your time? Are you doing well or not so well? Why? Are you on social media, watching YouTube or TikTok more than being with God? Are you being influenced heavily by social media & feeling like you do not amount to anything? Do you feel like time is flying, you procrastinate, and you don't feel productive at all?

We also share the trends that has taken ahold of our culture and the young generation that is preventing them to live out their God-given mission. Disclaimer: we get very blunt and honest here, but that does not mean that we do not struggle in these trends.

Are you having a difficult time to pray to God? If so, why? What about dealing with a lot of pride in your heart? How can you combat that?

For this one & only bonus episode before we are officially back (which is very soon btw), we wanted to share what we've currently have been struggling with, which could be relatable for you. But, with God, nothing is an accident or a coincidence, when we share on our current life struggles, with lack of prayer and dealing with pride. We are all on our own journey in our relationship with God, especially during seasons of trials, hardships, and struggles. But, we all serve a God who never changes and will never leave us when we are struggling or need His help.

Lianna shares on how she has been struggling to pray for the last few months, and how God revealed to her on why her prayer life was lacking for three main reasons, which you will hear in this episode. Then, she shares some quick but fiery tips on how to start putting prayer first and how to begin praying again. David, on the other hand, shares on how he was almost blinded by his pride and shared examples of pride rising up in his life and how God (& Lianna) has been guiding and helping him. David also shares some quick tips on how to deal with your pride, starting today.

The most important thing to remember that God is with you always. He will not leave you or forsake you, so if you believe that God has left you, remove that lie from the enemy and run to God, even with your struggles. Only He can help you with changing your own heart and guide you with a newfound sense of purpose, which is living for God alone.

Most of us can admit that we have all done this: go to the Bible, attempt to find a specific bible verse that will suit our needs, argument, sin, or lifestyle. But, this is so dangerous and damaging. When the bible is taken out of context or misused, we are pointing to ourselves instead of pointing to the most important thing in our lives: God. We cannot pick out a couple of verses that suit us and we agree with and throw the rest of the Bible away. If we truly want to know what a Bible verse or passage means, we have to read it within the context, which means to understand the section before and after the Bible verse. We can’t strip away all the surrounding verses, remove it from its original intent, and still expect to understand it. The Bible was never meant to benefit ourselves or to satisfy our wants and desires. The Bible is there to point us back to God and for us to get to know Him more and be more like Him, not ourselves. Here are the 6 popular Bible verses that are often taken out of context:

Jeremiah 29:11 Psalms 46:5 Matthew 7:1 Matthew 6:33-34 Luke 11:9 Philippians 4:13

Within the church and among Christians, we hear the message of staying pure and saving sex for marriage over and over again. But, no one really goes over on maintaining godly purity even after you get married. Maintaining purity is stressed so much before marriage, but within marriage, everyone is silent on this topic. Even as David and Lianna are married, they are just as intentional about remaining pure within marriage as they have been being sexually pure before marriage and share what that looks like.

  • DISCLAIMER/TRIGGER WARNING: This topic highlights many aspects of marriage, good and bad, including sex, intimacy, porn/masturbation, cheating/lusting, etc. *

Purity is a continual process throughout a Christian's person life, not just before marriage. God calls us to be holy in every aspect of our lives, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, even though they relate closely to one another. One question you can ask yourself or together is: What is motivating your purity?

Marriage in God's eyes was created to make us more holy, rather than to make us happy. Not to say that marriage can't be enjoyable or make us happy, but that is not its ultimate goal. In the Bible, love is defined in 1 Corinthians 13, and love is ultimately not a feeling, but a choice.

It’s not about you and it’s not about making yourself happy. Marriage wasn’t created for selfish reasons - God created marriage to unite two people into one flesh through Him.

We have wanted to talk about business, but never could really grasp what God wanted us to share. So, this episode is all about combining business and the gospel. If you are a business person or want to get into business, the reality is that we are in business, whether you know it or not. But, as Christians, how is business and the gospel so closely related?

Here are a couple of main points about Gospel combined with business:

Failure can either define you, or refine you. Fulfilling God’s purpose & mission IS ministry You do not have to be involved only in ministry in order to create Kingdom, eternal impact. The difference between being driven or being led. If you are a Christian, you are living out a ministry. God doesn’t want you to build a dynasty, he wants you to leave a legacy.

Bible verses mentioned: Colossians 1:16, Luke 16:10, Psalm 119:9-11, Matthew 22:37-38, Philippians 2:3-4

Even though the fruits of the Holy Spirit are one of the most well-known sections of the Bible, you might surprised that there are much to study and expand on. First, we highlight on what qualities or "fruits" won't get you into heaven, and then we go over each fruit of the Holy Spirit and see if you have the evidence.

At the end of the episode, we take a quick tangent or "rant" as you might call it on being careful on who you are influenced by like Christian influencers, pastors, and celebrities and why it's so important to be able to discern their fruits, whether good or bad.

Bible verses mentioned: Galatians 5:20-21, Galatians 5:22-26, Romans 3:23, 1 Corinthians 13, Romans 2:4, Matthew 11:28-29

We are honored to bring you a special guest today, Chelsey DeMatteis! She is a wife, SAHM, devotional writer, and podcast host of the Living With Less Podcast! We asked all about her testimony, standing for the truth, biblical expectations, and how to overcome being overly self-critical. We all have learned so much in this episode and we hope and pray that when you finish the episode you can say the same.

Here are some main ideas that we addressed in this episode:

– How to stand firm with what the Bible says versus the world. What are the differences or characteristics between standing firm with the truth of the Bible versus what the world says and believes.

– Chelsey’s powerful testimony on how she came to Christ and shares wisdom on how she clung to the bible in times of doubt or shame.

– Staying true to the Bible and not setting overly high expectations on yourself and others.

– Fears and worries before discovering God’s mission + encouragement for you to find your mission and how to keep showing up everyday

It’s been on our hearts for the past month to do a life update and we added a quick Q&A at the end. We wanted to give y'all a fresh look into our lives as we continue in the journey into 2021.Since we all are on the learning journey called life, we wanted to share what we are learning, the goals we have set for 2021, and changes we’ve made into our life.

There’s a little surprise...we updated our podcast cover! Go see what it looks like now!

We asked you all to send us any questions you may have, and we received many great questions that ranged in many topics. It was fun doing the research and discussing some of the questions that we were asked.

Here are the questions that we received and answered on this episode.

Would y'all think about doing a radio broadcast? Would you ever write a book for The Simple Mission? When Christian friends or family members pass away, can they see us on earth just like people watch over us?

Thank you all who submitted questions, just so you know the Q&A box is always open if you have a question that you might want to ask.

We continue on the conversation on Church Hunters, starting from our journey of church-hunting. Today, we are going over  why church-hunting is the answer, the difference between church-hopping and church-hunting, and when and how do you know that this church you are in is your church home.

We say over and over again in this episode, "There is no perfect church that exists out there."

We address what should be sought after from a church in church-hunting: Biblical Teaching, the Gospel is Preached, Community & Fellowship, Missions & Evangelism Opportunities. Other ways to look for is vision of the church, serving opportunities, and more.

We also share tips, both from our experience and what we wish we knew beforehand, on how to look for a Christian, biblical-based church in this episode.

Bible Verses Mentioned & To Study On: Hebrews 10:25, 2 Timothy 4:3-4, 1 Corinthians 12 (study on spiritual gifts), James 1:22, Acts 2:42-47

Today, you are in for a treat! We are joined with Phylicia Masonheimer, a best-selling author of Stop Calling Me Beautiful, theologian, and hosts her podcast, Verity.  We asked her all about how to not get intimidated by the Bible, why reading the Bible is important, and practical and inspiring tips to get started right now. She even encouraged us as well, especially on to not worry about having to know everything about the Bible all at once.

Here are some main ideas that we addressed in this episode:

  • There is no such thing as having the perfect quiet time to read the Bible. There is no reason to freak out or to wonder why your Bible reading routine is not "Instagram-worthy". God just wants you, and He is available all the time, not just in the morning.

  • If you want to read the Bible or to study the Bible deeper, get to the heart of WHY you want to read and should read as a follower of Christ.

  • Don't abandon reading the Bible by ONLY reading devotionals. Then, you will never experience the true knowledge of the truth of God's Word.

  • It's possible to still have your Bible study routine even when life gets crazy and busy, with college, career, marriage, and having children. It will just look different than previously, and you have to adapt and be flexible. But, you will never stop needing Jesus and His Word.

Of course, we had to ask her about her book, Stop Calling Me Beautiful, what it is all about, and where you can find it. Listen to the golden episode and learn more on how to get over being intimidated by the Bible.

During the year 2020, during the pandemic, we decided to leave the church that we got married in. After visiting two churches later, we are back at the same church. We wanted to share our journey of church-hunting because it is a subject not shared much online for someone that may be going through the same experience and feel alone in the process.

Disclaimer: We are not going to name churches or call out people or pastors or whatever. This episode is to share what we’ve experienced in our own church-hunting journey.

We answer these following questions: Why did we decide to leave the church we were at? And, why did we return back?

We go over the churches as Church #1, Church #2, and Church #3.

Why read the Bible?  Isn't it outdated and written by people who have been dead for centuries? How is it relevant to me today? We first have to understand: what is the Bible?

We go over a brief overview on the Bible, like what's in the Old Testament and the New Testament, and why they still matter today. If you live in the United States like us, you must realize how blessed we are to be able to go to church, read the Bible, and be Christians without any fear or persecution. We have it so good here, but people in China or other countries that have limited their religious freedom cannot have a Bible in their own homes. But, we can easily access the Bible with one click of our phones.

Yet, many people, even Christians, in the U.S. do not read the Bible. Or, if they do, it is only opened at church services on Sundays. We wanted to share with you the basics of the Bible, for those who are intimidated, who thinks reading the Bible is boring, or think they are too far gone to go back to the Word of God.

We also share some quick tips on how to get started on reading the Bible if you are a new believer and have never touched a Bible or if you are a longtime believer who want a more stronger relationship with God.

In this day and age, we feel entitled to have everything we want within our grasp and at the time we want it. We want  because we deserve it. We want our dreams to be achieved without ever lifting a finger to put in the hard work. And the worst part is that we think we are following the call of God. In all reality, we are not patient and think we deserve happiness, success, and wealth in the name of serving God. However, some of us cannot tell the difference between God’s calling and the world’s calling.

First, we go over the ironic concept of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). We fear we aren’t doing enough or aren't at the ideal place in life. We use our age as a gauging mark of where we should be at in life: marriage, graduated from college, having kids, having that dream job, etc. But, we have already missed the true and greatest point of all: Jesus Christ Himself.

We share the most craziest command that Jesus declared which is contradictory of the world's calling: Jesus said to deny yourself daily and pick up the cross.

Here's a few questions we asked & answered in this episode:

Have you been following God's calling or your own?

And, what does God say about success?

Bible Verses Mentioned: Matthew 16:24-26, Mark 10:23-27, Matthew 6:33

Yep, we are going to bring up anxiety, the symptoms, our history, and how to move forward. However, we know that in order to have a breakthrough and move forward in life, we have to begin by first talking about anxiety. But, first, we will define "anxiety" and "worry" so that there is no confusion. Disclaimer: we are NOT professionals, psychologists, or doctors so you do not have to take our word for anything we state in the episode. We simply want to share our experience and give advice where we can with anxiety through a Christian perspective.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, The three most common anxiety disorders are these:

(There are more than three, but for this episode, we wanted to focus on the top three!)

Specific Phobias, such as fear of heights, flying, driving, traveling, etc. Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Here are the THREE main sections for this episode on anxiety -

1.) Why We Are Bringing Up Anxiety. 2.) Our History With Anxiety 3.) How We Can Move Forward After Identifying Anxiety

We truly wanted to help people with anxiety that may be listening or if you know a loved one or two that have these symptoms that we listed on this episode to know the signs, offer help, and most of all, to pray.

This is the Season 2 Finale Episode! Since it will be our last episode for a while so we can have a short break from podcasting content & focus on the blog and other projects, we kept thinking about what to talk about for this last episode. And we are ending the season with a bang, a huge topic!

We feel like we had to speak on this topic for our last episode, that we as Christians are not meant to be of this world. And, the world does not like that at all. It wants you to be like the world, to fit in, to say all the things, be a part of things and movements that everyone else is a part of. I mean, what is wrong with that?

That is what we will talk about today. Right now, to be honest, it is hard to distinguish between a Christian and an unbelievers. We are not fully following God, but rather, we are following the world and its own values. As believers in Jesus and the Bible, we are going to to stand out against the world. We will end up choosing different things, living differently, saying things differently, no matter whether people say it is dumb or you aren't following your heart and your dreams. Whether you believe in Jesus or not, there is always something that we follow that we based our lives on.

We go over three main sections that can help define how to not be of the world even when we still live in this world.

1.) Your Foundation Is The Word of God.

2.) Build Godly Character and Values.

3.) Seek Community As You Walk The Narrow Road.

Bible verses & passages mentioned for further study: Luke 6:47-49; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 1 John 2:15-17; Colossians 2:8; Matthew 6:33; John 15:18-19; Matthew 13:3-8, 19-23; Psalm 51:1-3, 10-12; Matthew 7:13-14

We invited our very first couple onto The Simple Mission Podcast and it is...Lianna’s parents, Balde & Diana Peña. They have been married for 29 years and are still going strong. We wanted to invite them onto the podcast because they have so much wisdom and knowledge with living a godly, Christ-centered life even when life gets difficult or crazy. We hear their surprising story on how they met and fell in love, how they got to know Jesus even when they were raised in the Catholic church, and how they know that God is still good during the tough times.

Balde and Diana also share their wise advice on having a great marriage, such as laughing and not being too serious all the time and serving your spouse. In their journey of wanting to know more about Jesus, they each shared how God placed a strong hunger to know Him more in their hearts but did not know where to start. However, they shared how glad they were to be raised Catholic even though they eventually moved on to a non-denominational church where they have been faithful in and serving in for the last 30+ years. If you truly do not know where to begin if you want to get to know God and read the Bible, this section in the episode was created for you!

We asked them how they have been doing during this time of Covid-19 and the aftermath of the protesting, politics, and hate going around. They both have so much to say on this subject and also share encouraging words and Bible verses they cling to for hope and wisdom during unknown and sometimes ugly seasons.

As always, we ask everyone on the podcast how they discovered their mission according to God’s plans, and you will love their answers and will definitely be encouraged in your own life if you don't really know your current mission and purpose.

Here are the Bible verses & sections to read to find hope if you are angry or fearful: Psalm 18, Joshua 1:9, Psalm 91

Everyone is divided and easily offended. Cancel culture. Fake news. Hate online. It seems like God just is letting the chaos loose, and He is not even stepping in to stop it. We cannot allow our opinions of people from believing that God is still good. Our beliefs, opinions, values, news, political party affiliation, has to align with God and His Word. If it doesn’t, then it is not of God, therefore not good.

We also bring up another struggle in believing God is still good: we desire something that has not come or happened. If we desire something to happen in our life, like a boyfriend or girlfriend to someday marry “the one”, a job, start a family, get into college you want and more. But, if it doesn’t happen or it is delayed, we can tend to say that God is not good to us. This is such a dangerous mindset that can lead to destruction. He is a God who WE serve, not Him serving us.

We want to talk about this topic because we think that it is relevant to today's times. Among the chaos in this world, how can we find God amidst of it and how do we know He is listening? Or if He is still good? There are several cases in the bible where the world seemed to be lost and in trouble but God's goodness prevails.

Bible sections mentioned to implement: Philippians 3:18-21; John 15:18-21; Psalm 37:4 (read this correctly); 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18;

STUDY & READ Psalm 43.

Have you ever felt like you needed to simplify your life in some way but have no clue where to begin. Do you have 80+ pairs of shoes? Do you struggle with being busy all the time? We talk about the concept of simplifying your life and how it relates to why we began The Simple Mission. First, we explain the “why” behind simplifying your life, but spoiler alert, it is not for yourself. It is to give more glory to God and to further His kingdom here on earth to the best of your ability that God has given to you.

One thing we pointed out is we cannot let our clutter rule our lives. We are not promoting minimalism because that alone in of itself will not make you happy. God is the source of our ultimate satisfaction, and we are called to serve Him and use the gifts He has given to us to glorify Him. But, how can we do that if we are living complicated + cluttered-filled lives?

We have two main categories on how to simplify & declutter your life, right where you are at: Space & Schedule. However, we have one major point that is the core reason why we should simplify our life.

Bible Verses Referenced: Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 6:19-21; 1 Corinthians 10:31

We were not planning on continuing the conversation and story on divorce & our marriage. People has overwhelmingly responded on David's story of how his parents' divorce affected him in his life. So, we wanted to do more of a question and answer type of episode. We answer about 5-7 questions in this episode, which includes stepparents, divorce affecting our marriage, kids of divorced parents reacting in different ways, and if divorce is ever the right choice in certain situations.

We hope y'all enjoyed the answers and learn from us, even though we are not perfect and we are just sharing our journey together, as a married couple.

If you missed out on our two previous episodes on divorce, here are the titles below:

26: Divorce - Life Before and After

27: Divorce - Finding Hope In Your Story

  • All episodes are available Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeart Radio, Stitcher

Bible verses mentioned on divorce mentioned: Matthew 19:3-9, Malachi 2:13-16, 1 Corinthians 7:12-16

We are continuing our conversation on divorce. However, we are going to take a different take on this topic by talking about what it was like marrying into a divorced family, how that might affect your marriage and the challenges that comes with it. Overall, this episode is to help you find hope in your story. We go over three main topics that people that have a Christian background + have divorced parents would probably wonder themselves or vice versa: what it is like to marry into a divorced family, what it is like for your parents to remarry, and if it is possible to still have a healthy and successful marriage.

Lianna, David's wife, realized the divorce has strange dynamics occurring even now and she thought everyone had gotten "over the divorce" and moved on since it happened so long ago. But, David said that the divorce is something they individually all have to deal with for rest of their lives.

Overall, here are the main two words David wanted you to take away with today's episode if you have dealt with your parents' divorce: grieve and grow. Listen more on what those two words means and how it relates to the rest of the episode.

You do not have to feel like your future marriage or current marriage will be like your parents, if they did end up getting a divorce. You can make the change and decide not to take that route in your marriage or future marriage, starting today.

Many of us may come from divorced families or lived through a divorce themselves. However, hardly anyone talks about what it is like to be a part of a divorced family. And, almost no one talks about how to deal with divorce and being a Christian. "No one wins at divorce; everyone loses." - David. But, there is hope. David truly wanted to give people from a divorce background that they are not alone in this struggle of pain, the road to forgiveness, accepting God's grace and help, and believing God is still good.

We wanted to give an insight on what it is like to be a part of a family that dealt with divorce while being believers of Jesus Christ, and how to move forward in life since divorce is a life-long journey that affects everyone in its path

David shares his full story, from his point of view of his parents' divorce, starting from how he was raised in a Christian home, his family served in the church and went every Sunday. But, as he got older in his teen years, he saw some hints of problems that his parents were having but he shrugged it off, thinking that divorce wouldn't ever be an option.

But, David got the news of his parents' divorce and everything changed for him. In the first few years after his parents' divorce, he explained the confusion, hurt, pain, anger, and the emptiness that he felt. He truly believe that Jesus Christ and his grandparents helped him with processing the divorce, learning to forgive, and turn away from living in sin as a ongoing reaction to his unhappiness with his parents and his life.

David then asks Lianna on her background with her parents, seeing that they are still married today and what was going through her mind as she realized that David's parents were divorced when they were dating.

In our lives, we are always going to have conflicts. This episode will go into this further and can be applicable for married couples, dating couples, friendships, family, siblings, co-workers, classmates, and more. So, pretty much anyone.

This is not an episode where we explain the step-by-step of ways to handle difficult people or how to get what you want. Rather, it is an episode on dealing with conflict in a Biblical way. And, to do that, we have to humble ourselves & look inward not outward.

We share examples of the conflicts we have had in our lives, growing up and even within our engagement and marriage. One lighthearted example is we go back and forth over the temperature of the house--- the A.C. unit. But, then we got real...

There are a few conflicts that we have never brought up on the podcast or on the blog, or even our closest family members or friends know. And we have thankfully resolved it since; otherwise, we would not have brought it up! It may include a smoker and one of us may or may not have driven away from the house during the heat of an argument.

Here are a few things we point out (especially for dating/married couples):

There are lessons to be learned in how to fight better and more fairly. You may not realize your expectations until those expectations are not met. Then, it will come out one way or another.

We share about 5 tips on how to deal with conflicts in relationships in the episode. (And, you might be surprised on what those tips are!)

We reached out to an anonymous follower on how they deal with conflict in their own lives, and their answer is very insightful! So, you do not want to miss it towards the end of the episode!

We are all going to deal with conflict. There’s no way around. It is how we handle it that defines not just us, but what God says about it.

We focus so much of this episode based on this section in James 4:1-6

Other helpful Bible verses to study on:

James 1:19-21, Hebrews 12:14-15, Ephesians 4:31-32, Proverbs 3:5-6, Proverbs 15:1, Matthew 18:15-17 Romans 12:18

So, what will life look like after the year 2020? This is something that even we are wrestling with right now. And, we know so many of you listening are too. We know we all have legitimately asked ourselves these questions like,

"Will we still be wearing masks everywhere we go?", "Will the US go back to “normal” or will it become a new normal?" "How can I plan ahead if my summer or yearly plans have been shattered?",  "How do we find hope in the Lord during this situation?"

We just have a conversation for this episode, a candid & honest conversation from our hearts. We go into what we have been learning from the book of Jeremiah, digging deeper into the whole context surrounding Jeremiah 29:11-14, & how it relates to today. We go over all the scenarios that so many people are going through today during the Covid-19 crisis, such as weddings postponed, babies born during this time, isolation for many people, jobs lost, graduations cancelled or modified, and vacations or other plans cancelled.

We go over TWO main ideas about how to find hope even when our plans fall apart, so listen to what those main points are.

Part Two of sharing the behind the scenes of the first year of marriage is more open into the tough patches we have been through and more juicy topics, like intimacy and sex.

Being selfish. Difficult conversations (or arguments). Unmet expectations. Building Intimacy. Maintaining a sex life. Impatience. Defining our home. Family struggles. People being...weird when you get married. Introverts vs. Extroverts. Conflict management. True contentment. Advice for singles. All of these things have happened (& still occurring from time to time) during our first year of marriage.

But, that doesn't mean that our marriage has not been amazing. Marriage has been the most challenging journey that we have chosen to be on BUT it is also the most rewarding and joyful journey as well.

Disclaimer: we do go into the transparent topic of sex and building intimacy between 13:17 - 20:28  and if this is a subject that is triggering or you just prefer to NOT listen to this (or listen to right away!) no worries!  We just wanted to disclose this because we understand not everyone would like to listen to this topic. (Sorry, mom & dad!)

Please read this next sentence carefully & take it to heart: we (David + Lianna) have gone into marriage already knowing that we won't make each other happy. Only Jesus can truly fill our hearts and it is not up to us or our spouse to fill us because we will surely be disappointed. But, if we began to forget this, we would slowly get a little more irritated with one another and start nitpicking because we forget that we are both HUMAN. We talk a little more on contentment in single years is crucial BEFORE dating, engagement, & marriage.

But, we obviously have to share the joys of marriage that we have experienced so far during our first year: our love is grown exponentially, we started a business together (& share more on that topic!), and sharing and pursuing dreams TOGETHER as a couple and apart!

We explain the unique idea of not creating goals together, but rather dream TOGETHER. What do you want to do together as a married couple? Share your dreams with your spouse. And, it becomes your dreams, too!

We have officially made it to ONE FULL YEAR of MARRIAGE! First of all, we cannot believe that the year just flew by so quickly & we still feel like we just got married, like, yesterday. However, we want to be honest & authentic on our first year if marriage and show behind the scenes of funny moments & hard lessons we've learned.

There’s so much that can be said about our first year of marriage. That's why we are going to split it into two-parts episode. First, we want to share the main categories in which newlyweds struggle with in their first year of marriage: money and finances, in-laws, time management and schedules, personal time & space, housework/house roles, & intimacy/sex.

Part ONE consists of: preparing for marriage, first year of marriage is a year of transition and learning one another, being seen fully, COMMUNICATION, blessings of marriage, truly turn from your spouse's past, conflict is unavoidable but how you fight is important, setting boundaries with opposite sex & social media, healthy confrontation, finances, the little things matter, and more.

No matter how much you can “prepare” before getting married, the first year (& maybe the second year too) is a year of transition, learning one another, and adjusting to living together.

Be ready for part 2 next week where we will go deeper in topics with intimacy/sex, difficult situations, expectations, family ties, & the past.

We realize this is a longer episode than usual. Why? Because this topic is crucial to talk about. We notice, more than ever, that our overuse of social media and 7+ hours of screen time can take away the time that God wants you to use to continue or discover your mission. Here are some hard facts found in research:

We unlock our phones 150 times a day, according to a study on internet trends. 60% of college students admit they are addicted. 87% of Millennial say that their smartphones never leave their side. Excessive screen time also seems to be eroding teens' ability to get good sleep, which might also have negative mental health effects. Heavy reliance on smartphones is tied to a higher risk for suicidal thoughts or self-harm in school-age kids and teens.

Overall, social media can easily suck us into thinking we are not doing enough, don't look a certain way, eating the right foods, working out enough or hustling enough. We, David + Lianna, have struggled deeply with social media in the past and sometimes now.

We each shared our stories with social media usage and too much screen time and how it affected us differently. For example, whenever we are stressed or want to just chill, we find that we cope by getting on social media or have more screen time and waste time there instead of continuing our mission from God.

We want to help you take FULL control of your phone.

You do not have to allow your phone to control you anymore. You can take control of your phone usage, social media's mindless scrolling, and bring down hours of screen time.

We are not here to bring you down or to make you feel worse about yourself, especially if you really are addicted to your phone. Because we can be so addicted, it is hard to break that habit of getting on our phones without even thinking about it. So, give yourself grace & patience on this. Pray about it & ask God to open your eyes on how to do this on His Strength. He will help you and guide you.

Bible verses mentioned:

Leviticus 19:4 NIV “ ‘Do not turn to idols or make metal gods for yourselves. I am the LORD your God.”

Ephesians 5:15-17 “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

This is a straight-up episode. We know we are all in quarantine & staying at home to save lives. But, we know that we could be driving a person or people crazy being at home.

How are YOU doing at home? Truly? Is there someone driving you crazy or are you driving someone crazy? Are you an introvert and loving that you can be at home in your PJs? Or, are you an extrovert & are absolutely hating this and want to be around people, anyone other than the people you are with at home? And, are you alone? Here is our complete story, brutal and honest, during the quarantine so far.

David and Lianna, we are two completely different people. We love each other, but we also have two different personalities and needs. We share some funny moments as well as not-so-funny moments that we both have had during quarantine. But, we want to share tips that have helped us and maybe can help you as well.

Of course, we want to address the other challenges that you could be dealing with that we honestly don’t know about, such as having your children at home & homeschooling, or both parents working essential jobs and not able to care for their kids, or having an elderly family member or neighbor that cannot leave their homes.

And, we can feel very helpless at this point, if we let it get to us. However, this is the time to get creative. Look for creative ways to HELP if you can.

We know that in order to get closer and have a stronger relationship with the Lord, we have to have a time set aside to read the Bible, pray, & write. Setting a time is often not easy in the beginning and reading the Bible may not be very fun at first and can be boring and put you to sleep. But, when you intentionally cultivate a time devoted to God, He will help you.

We have two ways to help you:

One way is very straight-forward and will help you jump-start the process if you have never picked up or read from the Bible. which is to first, get a physical copy of The Bible, and second, to get a devotional to guide you.

The second way is for anyone that have read the Bible but has lost their passion and doesn't know how to move past from reading only devotionals.

SIDE NOTE: Devotionals should be supplemental to the Bible, but not the only thing you read. You MUST still read your Bible and not replace it with a devotional.

The important thing to remember during all of this is we all have 24 hours in a day, so we all have the time to seek God and build a stronger relationship with Him. You just have to put Him first before everything else. You can do it.

DEVOTIONALS MENTIONED:

"Streams in the Desert" by L. B Cowman, "College: Real & Relatable Devotionals for Every College Girl" by Jordan Lee Dooley

BOOK W/ DEVOTIONALS:

"Wait & See: Finding Peace in God’s Pauses & Plans" by Wendy Pope, "Jesus Calling" By Sarah Young, "The Love Dare" by the Kendrick Brothers, "Mr. & Mrs. 366 Devotionals For Couples" by Rob and Joanna Teigen, "New Morning Mercies: A Daily Gospel Devotional" by Paul David Tripp

This is just a short little conversation that we had a few weeks back when we were having our study time. Then, David was like we need to record this so write down what we talked about! And, we are finally recording this!

What a concept. Jesus spoke these statements to people back in his time, and these were radical commandments: love God & love others. But, here you will hear us speaking more about the second commandment of loving others as yourself.

We Christians, especially within the church, feel like we have to always be serving IN the church in order to love others. But, then we burn ourselves out and we forget the WHY we are serving... It's all BECAUSE of God's love in us. What about ourselves? Are we supposed to put ourselves, spouse, and family in the back-burner for the sake of obeying the commandment of "loving others"? No, we love others as we love OURSELVES.

There is a pandemic going on around the whole world, and it is called the Coronavirus. We have some thoughts on the scary situation and want to address the deep fears that everyone has. Stores are running out of supplies (even toilet paper), major events are being cancelled, and schools are closing. What are we supposed to do in this time of fear?

Disclaimer: we are not medical professionals, but simply want to address the fears and panic going around with God's Word and the wisdom from our family and friends.

Here are Bible verses to encourage you: 1 Timothy 1:7; Psalm 56; Isaiah 41:10; Joshua 1:9; Psalm 23; Psalm 118; Psalm 55: Philippians 4:6-7; Isaiah 26

If you have a dream already and you feel like you are lost in your thoughts or fears, this episode is for you. First of all, how do we “go for it”? In this world, we hear messages all the time, mostly found on Pinterest, like “Go for your dreams”, “Make It Happen”, “Don’t quit on your daydream”, “Think it. Want it. Get It.”, and “The world needs you to be you”.

But, how do we strike the balance of going for your dreams and staying aligned with God's Word? We talk about having the right intentions, the right heart, and going forward in God's timing. There is a balance of waiting and praying for God to guide us and waiting around and never going after it. God’s timing is the perfect timing. However, it's your choice to take the first step. The main key in going for your dreams as a Christian is faith and trusting in God.

David just released his book, "Work Hard, Pay The Price, Make It Happen" and we go over the steps he took in going for his dreams and wanted to share it with you in this episode!

Bible verses: Jeremiah 29:11; Isaiah 46:4; Colossians 3:23; John 7:16-18; James 3:14-16

So often, in our lives, we can tend to always be rushing into the next season, the next big thing, or the next success that is going to make us happy. What about the season and the moment that you are in that God has meant for you to be? Why do we still feel discontent in our present, the now? Jesus has a way of showing us how to slow down and be present with the Lord. In his season of ministry, Jesus intentionally slowed down, got alone and quiet, and went to a desolate place to slow down and pray.

We use the analogy of gardening of embracing the seasons we are in. Plants are meant to grow and thrive in the spring and summer. But, plants are also meant to be reaped, slow down, and die in the fall and winter to prepare for new growth for the next season.

But, if you do not know how to begin the process of slowing down and be present with God if you are always rushing into the next season, don't worry.

We have some steps to slow down and be present in the episode for you.

There is also another "extreme" of staying in the present that is laid out on in the episode unexpectedly, but it is important to note as well. The extreme is being too comfortable in the season you are in and you do not want to change or transition into the next season. If this is speaking to YOU, then this episode is for you, too.

Books mentioned: To Hell With The Hustle by Jefferson Bethke & When Less Becomes More by Emily Ley

Bible verses: Mark 1:35 ESV, 2 Corinthians 6:11-13 MSG; 1 Samuel chapters 9 &10; Matthew 11:28-29

For Christian dating and engaged couples, we share our struggle of being pure and maintaining purity for marriage. For Christian couples or married couples, it is easy to share about our lives together when it is happy, positive, and in accordance to God's Word. But, what about the dark side of the purity struggle we Christians go through during dating and engagement? This is for the:

Engaged couples struggling with purity Christian couples struggling with purity

Some people pursuing God together in relationships feel alone in this struggle. Many people are willing to share everything they did right, but seldom do we share about what we have done wrong and where to go from there.

David and Lianna have shared about how they kept God at the center at their relationship from the very beginning of dating. But, whenever they were alone together, watching Netflix, late at night, or alone in the car, it can be very easy to let things slide and get out of hand, in the heat of the moment. By sharing their struggle with purity, they also share tips on what to do (and wished they did) if you, in a relationship, are in a dangerous situation filled with temptations.

God will help you in your relationship, and it is never too late to start today.

This episode is not meant to shame or disrespect anyone. This is simply an episode sharing what David & Lianna struggled with in terms of purity and almost crossing the line of sex. However, if this is something that you are deeply struggling with, reach out to a Christian mentor, counselor, or pastor. Here are some Bible verses to help you fight the purity struggle below.

1 Corinthians 10:13, 1 Corinthians 6:18, 1 Corinthians 7:1-40, Galatians 5:16, Psalm 51, 1 John 1:9

We know it is difficult to live your life if you are weighed down by overwhelming debt. Don't get us wrong, having some debt is not bad; however, when it becomes unmanageable and take over your life, it is time to find a game plan to tackle the debt, with God's help.

David and Lianna had to get a plan. Full disclosure: Going into marriage, they had a total of $11,697 of credit card debt that was eating them alive. They came up with a 6 month plan to tackle each of the credit cards, one by one. They wrote down 6 months ahead and filled out what they were going to pay off and on what months.

As each month passed they would get their pen, cross off the credit card debt, take the card, cut it up and throw it away. It was done and over with.

Disclaimer: the foundation for this episode regarding debt and how to become debt-free is all biblical, meaning it is straight from God's Word.

First, you have to sit down and evaluate your finances and educate yourself. Check out your income and spending habits.

Second, get a plan to tackle down your debt.

Third, know that this journey to being debt-free requires sacrifice

If you want to make a change then start TODAY. Today is the day to start taking back control of your finances. They share the two ways you can sacrifice in order to be debt-free in this episode.

Bible verses mentioned in this episode: Proverbs 22:7 Romans 13:8

Discovering your purpose & mission is a hard topic to tackle because there are so many different ways to go about it. This episode goes more into learning of what God says about your purpose & mission through His Word and by prayer.

First, there is a difference between PURPOSE & MISSION. We define both words in this episode, and learn more about what God says about us, not what the world says.

Bible Verses mentioned:

Matthew 22:37-39

Sometimes, in life, there are so many transitions into new seasons. It can be difficult to catch up when we just got used identifying yourself as a high school student, college student, college graduate, being a parent, getting married, getting not married, or becoming an empty-nester.

In this episode, we speak about finding your identity not by your temporary environment but by your foundation in Jesus Christ. Your identity is in Jesus Christ and no one can ever take it away from you.

Secondly, we are meant to live out Your True Identity, one day at a time. These are ways we can live out our identity:

-Seek to bring Jesus glory, not your own

-Do what pleases Him, not for the approval of people around you.

-Use your gifts and abilities that God has given you

Of course, there will still come struggles and trials, and there is no perfect life. However, when we have Jesus Christ as our identity, He can help us and give us an eternal perspective by looking above, not down below here on earth.

Here are some verses we mention in this episode:

-John 15:16

-Galatians 2:20

-Ephesians 2:10

-Psalm 139:14

We often want to pursue what God wants for us to do but we are held back. But, we often do not know what we are allowing ourselves to be held back by. We share our stories of our past "hold backs" & how we overcame it with God on our side.

We know that God does not want us to live in fear but live in His freedom and in His purpose. And we want you to know this too. However, what is holding us back is ourselves, our fears, our influence, and how we spend time.

To overcome our "hold backs", we share the Word of God. Here's our the Bible verses we shared on this episode:

Joshua 1:5-7,9 1 Timothy 4:12 Ephesians 5:15-16

We go over on figuring out the influences you have in your life, and how you spend your time, whether you are utilizing your time or wasting it.

Starting a morning routine (or any kind of routine) can be so difficult to do, but it can be done. Join the conversation as we share what our morning routine was like before we first MET each other. You might be surprised on what you might hear.

Then, we share about our morning routine when we first got married...which was almost non-existent. We had a hard time adjusting to married life, and that carried into creating our routines. We realized in order to start a morning routine, we needed to keep things simple and get our priorities aligned with the Word of God.

However, we know that everyone is in a different season in their lives, so every morning routine looks unique for each person. For example, a college student's morning routine contrasts with a mom taking care of her children. This is extremely important to note.

Don't miss the ending where we list our tips on how you can establish your morning routine...starting today!

Figuring out your God-given mission does not have to be complicated. Rather, it is simple. Hosted by David + Lianna (that’s us!), we seek to equip others to read, study, and know the Bible, learn more of who God is, what He has done, and His mission for us. We filter complicated topics through the simple lens of the Gospel.

We go over a variety of topics, like church, family issues, staying pure, divorce, marriage, simple living, finding community, mental health, and more.
