In our continuing effort to surround ourselves with people much smarter than us, we welcome Ryan Maybee into the studio. Restauranteur, cocktail artist, modern Whiskey Baron and all around booze industry Renaissance Man, I’m hoping that he also responds well to flattery, because it’s our go-to move during interviews and the cocktails always taste better when they are made with a real smile. Beer
Welcome to the Boozie Banter Podcast. The cool weather has us in the mood for a trip down memory lane, heavy with lacy mists and rich in the barrel deliciousness, followed by some conversations about Iowa wine production and what the future holds for wine in our own backyard. Tonight's guest is Mason Groben, formerly the head brewer of the much loved Madhouse Brewing Company here in Des Moines, graduate of UC Davis Viticulture and Enology program, current winemaker at Jasper Winery and hopefully someone who doesn't mind a wiener joke here and there.... Settle in.

We weren't ready to say goodbye to Oktoberfest just yet. Join us as we continue our banter over a couple more German beers, Asbach (German Brandy) and some Berentzen pear liquor. Prost!
Welcome to the Boozie Banter Podcast. The leaves are changing and Autumn has grabbed us by the hop cones, directing our desires towards that most delightful of seasonal beers; the Oktoberfest. Malty deliciousness beckons and in our quest to have someone join us for German beer, we of course settled on a guy named Wallace. Welcome back Jason. Just remember, you signed the waiver.
Tonight we blind taste four German Marzen style beers against four Iowa Marzens. Here is the line-up- Tune in to see how we did....

They pair this ancient style of booze with their modern proclivity for booziness as they taste mead from some of the most renowned producers in the US. #edenciders #boilerbrewing #moonlightmeadery #schrammsmeadery #eviltwinbrewing
Bee Flustered - 3:40
Eden Ciders: Bee Flustered (2014 Harvest)Limited Edition Heirloom Blend ice cider aged in Superstition Meadery cherry mead rye whiskey barrels
METHOD: Naturally cold-concentrated before fermentation in our Vermont winter weather. Arrested fermentation leaves residual sweetness. Ice cider made from heirloom apple varieties and aged 6 months in 2 barrels from Superstition Meadery - originally rye whiskey barrels that they used to aged their cherry mead.
APPLE VARIETIES: Esopus Spitzenberg, Calville Blanc, Hudson's Golden Gem, Roxbury Russet, Blue Pearmain, Baldwin, Mcintosh, Empire, Ashmead's Kernel, Black Oxford, Reine de Reinette, Orleans
TASTING NOTES: Tart cherry, baking spice, oloroso
Meadow Foam - 11:10
Boiler Brewing: Meadow Foam
Meadowfoam is a wildflower native to the Pacific Northwest whose flowers resemble foam in the ocean. But more importantly, the bees that feed from it create a rare honey that tastes like Marshmallow and Vanilla. So, we present to you Meadowfoam Mead! Three ingredients: Meadowfoam Honey, yeast, and water. The result is mead that is sweet and decadent with a Vanilla and Marshmallow character; perfect for your inner Marshmallow character!
Cherry Decadent - 18:30
Moonlight Meadery: Cherry Decadent
Cherry melomel that rested on a bed of roasted cacao. Over a lb of roasted cacao per gallon.
Marionberry - 30:00
Schramm’s: Marionberry
Marionberry is a melomel made purely from Willamette Valley Marion Blackberries. Like our ‘Blackberry’, Marionberry has a full, natural fruit acidity that is balanced by premium Orange Blossom honey sweetness to create an extremely flavorful mead. Very dark in color, the Marionberries provide a jammy, juicy fruit-forward character. This mead has great aging potential for many years, though it’s pure fresh fruit character may make it difficult to leave alone for long.
Marionberry: blackberry developed by the USDA ARS breeding program in cooperation with Oregon State University. A cross between the 'Chehalem' and 'Olallie' varieties. It is the most common form of blackberry cultivated and accounts for over half of all blackberries produced in Oregon.
Red, Black and Blue Bomb - 36:40

Red Raspberry, Black Raspberry, and Blueberry.

Rather than the binge drinking, amateur drunk night that is normally an American St. Patrick’s Day, the studio is treated like a true pub where days gone by and hopes for the future are discussed. Bryan and Matt are joined by Sarah to relax into some red beers and chat about the upending of the industry on this day a year ago, how things have adapted, what they see moving forward and discuss their wish list of travel destinations for the coming year.Dublin Drop
Smithwick's - 10:00
· With a refreshingly balanced taste, this is a blend of mild hops, sweet malt, and roasted barley. The gentle bitterness of the hops is perfectly complemented by the sweet, malty notes.
Adnam's - Broadside - 31:50
· Broadside is a dark ruby red beer rich in fruitcake aromas, almonds and conserved fruit.
Lion Bridge Brewing - Olde No. 17 - 41:00
· The official beer of the Cedar Rapids St. Patrick's Day Parade Society (SaPaDaPaSo), and originally brewed to commemorate its 40th anniversary. This is the classic pub stout you know and love with a twist; 100 lbs of organic mashed potatoes were added during the brew to increase the dryness and slightly boost the alcohol. Roasty, with hints of dark chocolate, nuttiness and rich creamy mouthfeel.
Cheese - Jasper Hill - Willoughby - 28:00
As the whisky's start to warm us up, we finish the evening with the last bit of crazy talk with Matt, Jason, Bryan and Tim. We are off to the races!

Thanksgiving wines and the cellar- Thanksgiving has stood the test of time, did our wines do the same?
Join us as we dig into Bryan’s cellar (and the store) and taste some wines (and some other goodies) that are perfect for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The banter doesn't stop just because the mic gets turned off- Join us as we continue after hours with Merchant du Vin's Jason Wallace.
