“Do you want to be healed?” This is the question that Jesus asked the lame man, in John 5. Yet there was MORE to His question, and there is MORE to this man’s story. “Do you want to be healed,” was also “Do you want to experience LIFE?” “Do you want to be set free?” “Do you want to KNOW the MESSIAH?” “Are you tired of being a VICTIM?” Jesus' question was a loaded question, for sure, and yet in a good way! It was loaded with LIFE, HOPE, FREEDOM, VICTORY and OPPORTUNITY! Oh, and today, He is asking that same question to you and me.
What would you do if your child was sick,
even at the point off DEATH?
I suppose if you lived in Jesus day
you would find Jesus and ask HIM
to heal your son or daughter.
Such is the case in John 4,
with a nobleman, who was most likely
one of Herod Antipas’s court officials.
(So say many commentators.)
This nobleman seeks out Jesus
and asks Him to come heal his dying son.
This is a powerful story that takes us
through 3 levels of BELIEF, and yet also
moves us from the MORAL of the story
to the MORE of the story!

We are in week 7 of our series on THE POWER OF WORSHIP! This morning, I want to talk about being consumed with HOPE! I want to talk about how our WORSHIP can feed our HOPE! How we can have HOPE in a world of DESPAIR! If you recall we said that lifestyle worship stands on two legs. TRUST and GRATITUDE. We also said that HOPE is one of the offspring of TRUST! In other words wherever we PLACE our trust Is where we FIND our hope!
So here is where I want us to start this morning! This is going to be a great message that intersects our series on worship with the reality of Labor Day weekend. I want to start here, with these 6 reasons to be motivated in your work. All of those are noble reasons to find meaning in your work. There is nothing wrong with them. My contention up front though, is what if as believers we identified an even nobler reason for our work. What if we found the deepest meaning for our work, and that of course would be CHRIST! What if our relationship with Christ was the driving force behind our work and what if we found that it was actually possible to worship God on the Job!
I wonder as you look back over your life can you recall any mountaintop experiences that you have had? Any countries you visited, vacations you took, mountains you conquered, moments you remember when you had an emotional high. The thing as Christians, we always want to be looking for MORE than simply an emotional high. We want to have more than an emotional experiences, we want to have spiritual encounters. We want an encounter with God that takes our roots deeper as we experience those emotional high. Don’t get me wrong. We are BOTH spiritual and emotional creatures. There is nothing wrong with an emotional highs unless our roots aren’t deep enough to sustain it.
We are in week four of series… THE POWER OF WORSHIP. Where we are looming at the power of worship to help us Live in the Moment and Transform Today. In this series we are discovering how our POWERFUL worship can be. The thing is, if worship is THAT powerful and it is, Than we can be sure that Satan will attack our worship! Today then, I want us to talk about something we need to take note of. I want us to talk about the greatest THREAT TO OUR WORSHIP!
If we are going to live in the moment and transform today, then there will be times when we will have to be deliberate, even obstinate in our worship! This is week three of our current series, THE POWER OF WORSHIP! In this series, we are examining just how powerful worship can be! DELIBERATE WORSHIP is a key component of POWERFUL WORSHIP!
This morning I would like to give us all a variation on that story. While the advice is great, and getting our focus looking up is What we all want to do, what if we expressed the sentiment like this. Instead of… • Focusing on WORKING what if we focused on WORSHIPPING! • Focusing on SUCCEEDING what if we focused on WORSHIPPING! • Focusing on ACHIEVING what if we focused on WORSHIPPING! • Focusing on CLIMBING what if we focused on WORSHIPPING!
I want us in this series, to consider the power worship has in our life! So many of the issues we face and that we struggle with could be resolved if we just understood the POWER of worship and had our worship centered in the right place.
This morning we are going to bring this series of sermons to a close. For the past 12 weeks we have been looking at what it means to be EASTER PEOPLE: People who don’t just celebrate Easter one day out of the year but EVERY day of the year! People who are always living in the Reality of the Resurrection! Just as John will always be marked by his physical resurrection we should be marked by our spiritual resurrection and live as people of RESURRECTION.
There is a theological Truth Intended to influence my practical reality! There is a theological Truth, in this case, Christ has set us free. This theological truth is supposed to then in influence our practical reality. Meaning we should live as if we are free! Does your life reflect the reality that you are free? I am DEAD to sin so I should consider myself DEAD TO SIN! There is NO CONDEMNATION so I should not live a life consumed with guilt!
Today, and we are getting close to winding up this series on being Easter People, a people of the Resurrection, but today I want to talk about LIVING IN FREEDOM! What does it LOOK LIKE to live in freedom? What does it MEAN to live in freedom? Are we or are we not, living a life of freedom.
You might ask how can someone be saved and have no spiritual interest? It simply goes back to what we have talked about the last couple of messages about where we set our mind. Is it set on the spirit or on the flesh? That’s what it really comes down to. It comes down to how we think. We can be a brand new creation in Christ but if we are always thinking like the old man, eventually we will lose sight of the new man we are entirely. The bottom line is, if we are truly saved, if we are IN CHRIST, God will never leave us or forsake. He will never revoke our adoption and kick us out of His family. We may not look like we are his, but again our salvation is not based on our behavior but whether or not we are IN CHRIST or IN ADAM.
This morning we are going to bring three thoughts together to teach us all a powerful lesson. We are going to talk about ABUNDANT LIFE, which we all want to experience. Our TRUST IN GOD, which is key to abundant life and SERVANTHOOD where we can express our trust in God. The thief, Satan, came 6,000 years ago to the Garden of Eden and stole Adam and Eve’s identity in Christ and at the same time, brought DEATH where their was LIFE! He in essence brought spiritual death where there was once abundant life. 2,000 years ago, Jesus came to our world, He came to our neighborhood, to restore our identity in Christ and to bring us life. He brought us, Spiritual, Eternal and yes, Abundant life!
We have been talking for a few weeks now about what it means to be EASTER PEOPLE, who celebrate and live the resurrection EVERYDAY of the year, and not only ONE DAY of the year. The past few weeks specifically we have been looking at how the power of the resurrection and our identity in Christ works. It is one thing to use these as catch phrases, it is another when they are a practical theology that we actually live out. Now I want to go back to last week and pick up where we left off. Last week we looked at this core question…Who am I REALLY?
This morning though I want to go deeper and I want to answer the question, WHO AM I, REALLY! I can say that my identity is in Christ, but WHAT does that really mean? As I have said before, everyone today seems to want to talk about this issue, but I wonder, is the idea of…MY IDENTITY IN CHRIST
We are in the Series EASTER PEOPLE, where we are looking at how we are to live in the reality of resurrection not just for ONE day Easter, but EVERY day! We talked last week about responding to the Gospel and how EVERY TIME we respond to the Gospel it is Good News all over again. We know our salvation is Good News. We know the assurance of eternal life and the reality of abundant life is Good News, and yet the truth is the Gospel is something we are to Live-out everyday, and when ever we live it out it is Good News all over again.
I wonder this morning how you came to faith in Christ? I wonder what your spiritual journey to Christ looked like? The truth is, while the journey looks different for all of us, there is still only ONE GOSPEL that begs of us all the SAME RESPONSE. In fact the Gospel we respond to today is the exact same Gospel they responded to 2000 years ago. The Gospel that exploded shortly after the resurrection and ascension of Christ and has continued to grow even to this day. In fact I doubt there is ever a time in history when the Gospel was not growing. One reason why, is the the more Christians are persecuted and the Gospel is attacked, the more the gospel spreads.
This morning I want to talk with you about a mother in the Bible that we could title the Faithful Mother. WHO am I talking about? I will identify her in a moment. As we watch that video, we have to be careful we are not left with the misconception that some mothers are more important than others, because that simply is NOT true. The truth is, as we will see this morning, there really are no unimportant mothers. Every mother is valuable and is vital. Mom’s did you hear me? You are valuable and vital. In fact you are more valuable and vital than you probably think you are.
We are in week two of our latest series, EASTER PEOPLE, where we are considering what it looks like to live in the reality of the Resurrection everyday. Easter as we said, is not just A DAY but it is A WAY of life! Today is part 2 of the sermon we started last week, THE EASTER REVOLUTION. We are asking the question, How did we get from the 500 + witnesses of the Resurrected Christ [in I Corinthians] to the 250 billion proclaimed followers of Christ today?
You know it is a bit ironic because the disciples had been looking for Jesus to lead a revolution and free Israel from Roman rule. When Jesus died they thought the revolution had died with Him. Little did they know that they revolution hadn’t ended it was just getting started. Oh and yes it would be the revolution they never saw coming. It didn’t free Israel from Rome, it freed mankind from Death, Satan and Sin, and the revolution continues today. It is just whether or not we are a part of it. Now in the passage we just read, Paul is laying a foundation for this revolution and giving His own account of the Easter Story. He shares how the Easter Story, or the Gospel is supported by 2 very significant elements.
Have you ever looked into a mirror at yourself and simply felt dead inside? Now I get that is a very personal question and you don’t have to answer it. Here is the thing, I will answer it. I can admit that yes there have been times in life when I have felt dead inside. In fact I’m not even sure if I can remember the circumstances, just that I have been there. To be honest I’m guessing we all have been. We all have those seasons from time to time when we just feel dead inside. In fact it is interesting while we live in a world full of life, full of people animals, and even an ecological system that is living, their is an undercurrent of death. Did you ever think about that? We are faced with life all around us everyday and yet their is this subtle undercurrent of death.
This morning, we will learn about praying in the deep end from Jesus. We will see what praying from the deep ends looks like and why it is so important! Our key text is in Mark 14, where we find Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. It is the night before He is crucified. Mere hours before He is arrested and the events of the crucifixion begin to fall in place. Jesus takes Peter, James and John and goes to the Garden for what is His and the Bible’s most intense prayer.
We have been talking about prayer now for the past four Sundays. This is week 5 of the 6 weeks we will spend on prayer! We have spent 4 weeks on prayer and we have looked at some of the dynamics of our prayers and the relationship between worship and prayer. Today though there are two questions we need to seriously consider in regards to our prayer.
The past two weeks we saw Paul praying for the Church at Ephesus, and he said in BOTH prayers, that he prayed “FOR THIS REASON.” What was that reason? Why was Paul praying for them? Because of their potential. He saw in them and prayed for them, that they would realize their potential. So we might look at ourselves and think we could never do an all-night prayer gathering and yet it is my job to equip you, challenge you and help you see your hidden potential in Christ.
Today as we BOW DOWN AND LOOK UP, Paul has yet another prayer for us, a prayer where he will pray that we would know a richness in our lives. Where we would discover a rich and rewarding life! As I said last week, Paul knows our potential, He knows how rich, how rewarding, how fulfilling our lives can be in Christ, and he wants us to discover that richness for ourselves. In fact he will show us this morning, 4 ingredients of a rich life. 4 areas where we need to pray everyday if we want to experience a richness in our life.
Let’s start here this morning. I have 5 statements on prayer. I wonder which of these statements resonates with you? Prayer is having a conversation with God about my life. Prayer is being authentic with God and is a healthy way to process the emotions I am dealing with and to find peace. Prayer is bringing my burdens and requests to God. Prayer is acknowledging God’s Presence in my Life. Prayer is an expression of my worship. Do you think that these are all accurate statements in regards to prayer?
This morning I want to start a new series of messages that will actually take us to Easter. This series of messages, will focus on prayer and help us consider what prayer really is and the place it should have in our lives. I want us to consider the two forces of bowing down and looking up. The idea of our prayer set within the context of our worship. Prayer being one of the most prolific expressions of our worship. We will look over the next several weeks at some of the Bibles greatest prayers. This morning we will start with what is probably the most iconic prayer in the Bible. The prayer known as THE LORD’S PRAYER.
There are 5 truths I want us to see in communion that visualize for us the Gospel we are called to LIVE-OUT everyday! What if communion became a regular reminder not for merely 5 minutes every so often, but for every minute of everyday. What if communion became a reminder of the gospel we are called to live out!
This morning I aim going to wrap up this series PURSUIT: CHASING AFTER THE HEART OF GOD! And we are going to go right to the very HEART of God’s heart! Just picture God’s heart as a target! We will aim for the heart of God’s heart this morning. This morning we are going to go in pursuit of GRACE!
This morning I want to talk to us as a church! Yes this sermon will also speak to us personally, but to some degree this is a message for us collectively as the church. This morning we will address the question, “What is OUR responsibility in the world today? “What is OUR responsibility within society today? We live in a fallen, broken, hurting, spiritually bankrupt world, that is on some level, economically impoverished, racially divided, and systematically oppressed. The question is, what is our RESPONSIBILITY to this REALITY as the church?
Does life ever fail to make sense to you? Do you ever look at the world around you and the life you are living and simply wonder, what does it all mean? Does life ever fail to make sense to you? Does life ever fail to seem worth it? Does life ever feel like it is all a waste of time? Do you ever look around you and the life you are living and ask, “What’s the point of it all?”
This morning as we continue our New Year’s Series PUSUIT:CHASING AFTER THE HEART OF GOD, I want to us consider the Pursuit of God’s Will? What does it look like to pursue God’s Will and even more, how do we find it? How can we discover God’s Will for our life, our family and yes even our church! Let’s start with a foundational verse, then a central passage of scripture and a BIG IDEA, then we will work out the Scriptures and this issue from there,as together we learn how we can discover God’s will for our lives.
Last week I mentioned that one of the keys to holiness was walking in intimacy with God. That’s very true! The time we spend with God transforms us. Just as Moses spent time in God’s presence and his face began to glow, so it is with us. If we spend time with God, if we get to know God personally and intimately people will see Him in us. In this series we want to consider what that looks like for us? What if we were men and women who chased after the Heart of God, what if we lived a life of Holy and Heavenly Pursuit? Last week we talked about the shape of hope and how God wants us to abound in HOPE! This morning, I want us to consider pursuing FAITHFULNESS! I want us consider what FAITHFULNESS means to God.
As we embark upon the New Year, I want to begin a New Series of messages. I want to spend the next 5 or 6 weeks looking at this Idea of PURSUIT! The truth is we are ALL pursuing something in life, the only real question is WHAT? What is your life in pursuit of? Specifically in this series we are going to look at the idea of chasing after the heart of God. We went to consider what it looks like when we pursue God and His heart above all.
We have been spending this Christmas looking at some of the gifts of Christmas, some of the Christmas gifts we may not always associate with theChristmas Narrative in the Bible. This morning I have one last gift for us to unwrap and that is the gift of Reconciliation.
This Christmas we have been looking at the gifts of Christmas, The gifts from God the Father. Today I want us to consider the gift that is at the hear of our Christmas Celebration. This morning I want us to consider the Gift of Jesus!
This morning as we continue this series, THE GIFTS OF CHRISTMAS, I want unwrap the gift of adoption with you. We may not think about adoption as being associated with Christmas but we should. I will show you why this morning. The Bible compares the Christian’s relationship with God The Father to an adoption. The thing is, Christmas is when The Father started our adoption process. We will see that this morning.
This morning as we continue our series the Gifts of Christmas I want to talk about the gift of Grace. I want us to open up this most beautiful of Gifts, and consider what it really means to us. The truth is, because Jesus showed us grace, because HE has given us this gift of grace, we can give grace to the other people in our life. In fact let’s be honest, those of us who know Christ as our Savior, we as Christians, should be the most gracious people on the planet.
Today I am starting a new Christmas series where we are going to look at 5 gifts over the next 5 weeks. These are the gifts of Christmas. These are the gifts that we find in the Christmas Season and Christmas Story. Now these are not the ONLY gifts of Christmas, we could identify more, but some of these may be gifts we don’t think of often. Some of these may be the unexpected gifts of Christmas.
Now here’s the thing, if you didn’t already know this, you need to learn it this morning. Gratitude is good for your health! One of the best things you can do for your health is to cultivate a HEALTHY HEART! Maybe this is why God share these parameters for our Thankfulness in the following verses.

Like we saw the past two weeks with Moses, there is an invitation that God gives us and a life we are called to live. Last week we saw that life as being outside our comfort zone. This morning I want us to see the life we are called to live through a different lens.

This morning as we continue our series ENOUGH, where we are looking at the sufficiency of Christ, I want to us to tackle this common problem. What do we do in life, when it is NEVER enough.
When I say that forgiveness is a GIFT, it most certainly is. It is a gift from the Father to help us navigate the difficult relationships of life. We were CREATED to be in a relationship with God. We have been DESIGNED to be in relationships with each other. And yet because of sin and brokenness, for givens becomes an imperative. We are in a series where we are talking about ENOUGH, and how Christ is enough! It is a series that seeks to look at the sufficiency of Christ! This morning I want us to see Christ’s sufficiency When it comes to FORGIVENESS! His forgiveness is sufficient for every relationship we have.
Specifically this morning I want us to look at the story of David and Goliath and I want to approach the story in a fresh way. I want us to see, to come to terms with the deeper meaning behind the story of David and Goliath. This morning the sermon’s title is very important to where we are going! The End Of Me!
