We are so excited to share our 100th episode, featuring Los Angeles based-singer, songwriter and producer Able Heart!
Able was lost in life after his Amateur US Olympic snowboarding career came to an abrupt halt due to an injury. For years, he questioned his life and struggled with depression and addiction in his hometown of Philadelphia until he found a deep connection and purpose with music. Creating music became his therapy and healthy outlet to express himself. Able hopes his music can now inspire and help others.
Able won the show SONGLAND on NBC and worked with Ryan Tedder and Ester Dean to create the Jonas Brothers’ hit song "GREENLIGHT" which was #1 on the billboard charts.
Able's single Whisper went viral trending #2 on Canada, Norway, South Africa and Ukraine "Spotify Top 50 Viral" and TikTok with over 100,000,000 plays and over 100,000 user created videos and 4 million views on YouTube. He also put out 40 songs in 40 days this year.
We discuss all of this in today's episode!

Caleb Hawley is a New York City based songwriter and performer. In his decade-long career, he has released five albums and played over 1000 shows. Citing main influences such as Randy Newman and Janet Jackson, his songs often combine catchy melodies with dark and satirical lyrics. Combining catchy melodies with dark and satirical lyrics, one has to be careful not to slip while dancing in a puddle of their own tears.
There was a time when Caleb hated being mistaken for his mother when answering the land-line, but it worked out for him in the end, setting him apart with his high, androgynous vocals. He forms authentic connections with an air of openness, soulful singalongs and untethered guitar work drawing comparisons from Prince to Robin Williams.
He has 5 full length albums out to date, most which were written & produced in his 5x10 storage-unit-turned-studio, where he works alongside a black market DVD burning entrepreneur named Fred.

Sin. is an Indie / Psychedelic Rock band based out of Chicago. Their sonic sound pulls influence from the likes of Ty Segall, Iggy Pop, Wilco, Alex (Sandy) G, and more. Their lyrical topics embrace the human experience, giving into desires, reclaiming the biblical term "sin" in a somewhat positive but melancholy light. With Ethan Oliver on vocals and guitar, Brian Chindblom on guitar and backup vocals, Joe McTague on bass, and Caleb Nelson on Drums, the group is able to create a harmonious yet psychedelic experience for those who witness them perform.
We discuss their newest release and the DIY scene in Chicago.

Ryan Dusick is the founding drummer of Maroon 5, an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist (AMFT), and the author of the book "Harder to Breathe - A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery."
In 1994, Ryan Dusick joined friends Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, and Mickey Madden to form the band Kara’s Flowers. They released the album The Fourth World in ’97. Following the termination of their record deal, the band went on hiatus and everyone went their separate ways.
In 2001, Dusick reunited with Levine, Madden and Carmichael. They were joined by former Square guitarist James Valentine. The group changed their name to Maroon 5 and set to work writing new songs for what would become the award winning album Songs About Jane.
After departing from Maroon 5 and years of struggling with physical and mental health challenges, Ryan finally overcame in 2016, when he began his journey of recovery, culminating in a new life path.
Ryan has recently released an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at his journey from the highs of international superstardom to the depths of addiction, anxiety, chronic injury, and depression. His book Harder to Breathe chronicles Ryan’s remarkable recovery and his transition from the music industry to professional counseling where he’s helped hundreds of clients overcome mental and physical health challenges.

Gus Glasser is a 23-year-old Atlanta native with a style described as soulful pop and musical influences like Trey Songz, Flying Lotus, Mr. Carmack, and Marc Rebillet.
Gus recently released “Days After South Africa,’ influenced by his time in rehab there. He uses music to share his challenges with mental health and addiction. He is known for his improv performances on Atlanta campuses, with his single "A Really Damn Long Day" blowing up on TikTok and 5.5million streams on Spotify.
–
Today, we are joined by Gus Glasser to discuss street performances, addiction and his release ‘Days After South Africa.’

This has been a hands down favorite and the most fun interview we’ve had. You can feel the energy radiating from Gus through our computer screens. From the periwinkle wall to the constant banter and playful comments about our studio, we hope to have him back on very soon. You can feel that music is his life, and has saved him from a dark path. Music brings him life and he is an example of being his number one fan. Gus was open about his experience in rehab, which inspired his new album, and how he has made waves making videos of himself improvising music on the college campus he ironically dropped out of. He ended the interview with a sneak peek of his unreleased upcoming single, which was a pleasant surprise to the day.

Nikmoody is an Italian-American rapper from Long Island, NY. Hopeful yet brooding, his lyrical style reflects his love for old school hip hop and grunge rock & roll. He’s known for his powerful songwriting and contagious performances. He’s hit the stage with the likes of Dizzy Wright, KOTA The Friend, and Asher Roth. After performing on Shade45, at SXSW and the Empire State Music Festival, Nik headlined his first international tour in London & Finland in 2022.
Nikmoody recently released his first album ‘Madhouse.’ Guided by his producer Blvff, Nik has adapted to the bouncy trap sounds and melodic guitar rhythms of the new school while keeping the boom bap core that his fanbase craves. He even blends into the world of metal with a feature from Stray From The Path’s DR€W ¥ORK on the standout single “BMT.”
Nik “channels experiences of loss, addiction, and a near-death experience into his music.” It’s within these experiences that Moody found his voice. He rallies every misfit, every quiet kid who feels overwhelmed by the world to cross their fingers, and find hope until the bitter end.
Today, we are joined by Nik to discuss touring, songwriting and his new release ‘Madhouse.’

Nik took this interview from his long island apartment, surrounded by a white board of ideas behind him. From the inception of the band in July of 2021, Nashville rock band, CHLSY, strives to reignite 90’s sounds with their own modern “dark rock” spin and make music for others to feel seen.
Vocalist, Chelsea Gilliland, hosts several radio shows and recently partnered with the global streaming platform, Twitch. CHLSY has grown its loyal social media fan base to nearly 83.7K followers and supported the Nashville-based rock band The Criticals on tour this past July.
Today we are joined by Chelsea Gilliland of CHLSY to discuss authenticity, healing and her new release ‘Quantum Entanglement.’

I love the way Chelsea entered the interview. She is sweet, and has a ‘cool’ vibe about her. You can sense her spirituality, believing that the universe is at work. In fact, her album title is a mix of science and human nature within her art. Coming from a family with a science background, she shares a bit she has learned from her dad and brother.

For almost 30 years, Andrew Rodger has performed throughout Canada, solo and with his own band - Stop Yelling. After a lengthy break from the music world to begin his family, Andrew returned to music in 2020 amidst a very different musical landscape from the one he left.
Self proclaimed sadly optimistic songwriter, working from his home studio space, he has released 7 complete albums in the last 2 years. Two of which we will discuss today are “Haunted Cowboy Sounds’ and The Wanderer.
(The Interview)
The interview was held virtually but we can see Andrew in his purple/blue home studio with banjos and guitars on the wall. The conversation starts off lighthearted, fun, and turns into a feeling full of hope and full of love. His kids are an important part of his life and he has no shortage of stories to share with us. We get a glimpse of a true writer with a great memory of his past and lots of quotes from great musical legends.

Katie Zaccardi is a coach and educator for musicians, music teachers, and music coaches, helping them grow their business & bank accounts while ditching overwhelm, self-doubt, and burnout for good. After dedicating 10+ years of her life to the music industry as a student, indie artist, and music industry professional, and creating a life of freedom, abundance, & music for herself, she founded "Out to Be" to give music entrepreneurs the tools, support, & motivation to do the same.
Today we discuss how Katie helps you define your brand as an artist and craft your messaging to always be your authentic self.
--
Your brand as a musician is so much more than your genre or your color palette. It’s a reflection of who you are, and why your audience loves you. Knowing your brand makes it easier to show up authentically online and create content with confidence. That's why Katie created The Artist Brand DNA Quiz that helps musicians figure out which one of the 6 Brand Archetypes (The Romantic, The Advocate, The Inspiration, The Observer, The Party Animal, The Entertainer) they are.

Nathan Dohse is the President and Co Founder of AGD (Another Great Day) and the artist development program called Zero To 60, a curriculum-based day to day management program for performing artists.
Like many others in music, he got his start as a performing artist himself. Unlike many others… that start was in a Christian Screamo Rock band, which later evolved into Indie/Rock with similarities to Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, and Augustana. The group achieved many notable opportunities over a decade of activity, allowing Nathan and his brother the necessary experience to transition to artist management.
Today, we learn how Nathan helped his artist, Manny Blu breakthrough with TikTok for a cross genre like Country Punk.

Jay has created and executed unique online marketing plans for a wide variety of artists, including Elton John, KISS, Nirvana, Styx, Bob Marley, Peter Frampton and many more.
Jay is also the force behind the excellent Your Morning Coffee newsletter and the Music Biz Weekly Podcast, as well as a partner in the artist and label services company Label Logic.
During the interview we spoke about the one thing that artists get wrong with digital strategy, the importance of fundamental artist marketing, the reason why pseudo and unwrapping videos can be so powerful, the importance of radio, and much more.
With many platforms to track the performance of your song, video or fanbase, it can be challenging to connect the dots. There's Chartmetric, Bandsintown, Viberate, Spotify, Pandora, Deezer... but what exactly can you gain from the insights? Your artist website is the perfect space for meet-and-greets without the noise of ads or distractions that social media creates. It’s a space belonging to you alone, that you can curate as the hub for your online presence as a musician. If someone sees your video on YouTube or hears your music on Spotify, they Google you and your website comes up. From there, you can capture their attention and engage them with your music and your brand.
Artists tend to undervalue the power of websites just as much as mailing lists. Facebook is not a website. Bandcamp is not a website. Fans want a one-stop shop where they can listen to your music, watch your videos, learn about upcoming shows, and find out more about you. The easier it is to find you, the easier it is to follow you.
Creating and maintaining a proper website isn’t just for your fans, either. Talent buyers, music journalists, and all sorts of industry professionals are more biased towards artists who represent themselves well with a professional-looking online presence.

Playlisting is a great way to gain exposure for your music but it should not be the only part of your strategy. Artists can gain exposure from the listeners of playlists and playlists continue to build their content to retain their listeners. BUT how can you get your music on playlists? How do you contact curators? How does Spotify work?
Andrea has extensive experience running projects and companies from startups to established brands, both inside and outside the music business. As a management executive she has worked for a major label and distribution company on campaigns for major artists; co-owned a music retail chain of 15 stores; co-founded the company that computerized over 2000 retail and wholesale music industry stores and warehouses; and, was part of the group that created SoundScan; ran and chaired Aspen Colorado’s public radio station (APR), and produced and hosted radio news and music shows for over 20 years on APR. Recently she has focused her energies on leading the team at DPG in providing streaming promotion and platform strategies including independent playlisting, music curation and all of DPG’s artist and label services.

When you hear 'Nashville,' what do you envision? Cowboy boots, honky tonks, country music... But Nashville has so much more to offer than Country Music. Nashville has a huge hub for musicians yet there are many under- represented voices in Music Row. It's not called Music City for nothing! The founders of Nashville Is Not Just Country Music, Thalia Ewing (aka The Muziqueen) and Mimi McCarley, is empowered by the Urban scene in Nashville. In this episode, they share the importance of education for R&B, Hip Hop, and Urban communities to thrive in a traditionally country music business infrastructure, while bridging the gap in Music Row to represent non Country musicians.
Muziqueen developed her career on the business side of publishing, copyright clearance, and royalty processing, currently at BMG. Mimi came from the creative side in songwriting and producing. The two initially joined forces on a few publishing projects and quickly learned that they had a shared vision: a reality in which Nashville’s Urban music community had access to resources, information, opportunity, and economic stability — the same things that the Country Music machine provides for its artists and industry professionals. In 2014, they founded Nashville Is Not Just Country Music and set about creating space for the people they were working with. They built the organization to provide a resource hub for Nashville creators and execs in Urban, R&B, pop, hip-hop, rock, and other non-country genres.

Even though Twitch is a livestream platform primarily for gamers, indie musicians are building real fanbases and making enough money for this to be a solid side hustle or even a full-time job. Artists on Twitch are supportive of each other. Viewers are looking for fun, new talent to hang out with online. The category is not over-saturated, so you can still get discovered. And the whole thing has monetization features that are fun for the viewers and lucrative for streamers. Karen shares tips for artists on how to get involved with producing a stream (OBS, Stream Labs, etc), how to navigate the unspoken rules of the music community on Twitch, and how to grow an engaged fanbase that will generate an entirely new stream of revenue.
Karen Allen (@twitchformusic) created "Twitch for Musicians," a book and an online course that demystifies the process of producing and growing a channel on Twitch. She advises labels and artists on their livestream strategy and produces livestream events. She is also a strategy and business development consultant to tech startups in music and entertainment and has held executive positions at the RIAA, Mobile Ecosystem Forum, and TAG Strategic.

Wendy day (@rapcoaliton) has been in the industry for nearly 30 years. She was instrumental in building the careers of Enimem, David Banner, Twista, Cash Money, Slick Rick, Master P and more. Wendy started as an executive in marketing and advertising, but out of disgust for how the industry exploited rappers, she depleted her life savings to open a nonprofit called the Rap Coalition that helps artists navigate the industry and essentially get rappers out of unfair deals while simultaneously getting them great deals.
She authored the book How to Get a Record Deal 📘
She negotiated Cash Money's 30 million dollar deal. 💰
She negotiated David Banner's 10 million dollar deal tax 💰
Day organized the 1997 Rap Olympics, invited Eminem, led to an Interscope Records deal. 📀
Wendy dedicates her life as an advocate and educator to artists on how to be successful in music, she wants everyone to be able to quit their day jobs to be an artist full time and to frankly not get screwed in the industry. In episode 31 of The Set Up, we are joined by Legendary Music Industry Exec Wendy Day to discuss contracts, development and how to be aware in today's music. And now, she's got something cooking for artists this January!
"You want to sign to a label that is strong where you are strong. If they have a weakness, you want to have a stipulation in the contract that you can hire someone from the outside of the label to do it…..and you want them to pay for it."

Are you struggling to find the right producers to collaborate with? Hint: it is not as simple as checking out the artists they've worked with or the genres produced for. Emily made an album with a male music producer who discovered her from her live performances. The arrangement ended when Emily refused to date him or give him majority songwriting credits to her songs she wrote in their entirety from chord progressions, lyrics, to melodies.
The producer had a lawyer. The lawyer sent threats to Emily, claiming her refusal to cooperate had caused him to lose money from the potential of money he could have made. He threatened to sue Emily for astronomical amounts of money. He sent demands that the songs be removed from the internet and to cease any reproduction. Emily’s inexperience in the music industry led her to cave. She felt devastated, powerless, and confused.

Jason Euler is the Founder of Kinekt (formerly The Artist Path), a mentoring platform for creative professionals to connect with industry professionals. He is also the Experience Creator for Relentless Beats and Manager of Bella Renee, R3ll, Ekonovah and Tydi. Jason's passion for music started when he was 23 years old while attending his first festival, Mad Decent Block Party. Although he lost all of his friends and paid $85 for an uber home, he knew he found his calling. Jason rented a party bus for the next festival so that he can have a safe ride home and ended up making $2,000 in which he donated to a Children's Hospital. Octiv Entertainment was founded as a transportation service for festivals and quickly evolved to talent buying and producing house/bass shows in Phoenix. Jason produced his first major event in partnership with a local hotspot which got cancelled two days prior to the show. That did not stop him from doing everything he can to make it happen. Seventy events over 2 years later, Octiv was acquired by Relentless Beats, a large concert and festival producer in the Southwest. Before paving a path in music, Jason was a professional baseball player for the Cardinals. Follow along as he shares how baseball helped his career in music and other things he learned along the way.

Hope breaks down the importance of music videos and the overall process for creating one. Whether you are working with artists or are an artist yourself, this episode focuses on how you can create a music video independently or with a team. You can expect these main topics in our full episode at the link below.
"Utilize your resources! Focus on the things you can do."
Hope Taylor is an artist and entrepreneur. She is part of the emerging electronic duo Silent Disco Sex, who brought us "Shapeshifters" and newest EP "Concubine." Her music is heavily influenced by Porishead and Nine Inch Nails. Hope is known for her unique sound design and dark, cinematic vibes in her music and her music videos.
Without any prior experience in video production, she created her first music video by herself and quickly realized it was her calling. As a DIY artist, Hope continues to be the producer, videographer, creative director, video editor and subject of all her music videos. Over the years, she has mastered the overall process of creating content and strategy for artists' music. Realizing that there wasn't a central hub where she can collaborate on all creative aspects of her musical career, Hope launched A.F.T.A Music in response to all of the artists who also experience the same challenges.

"Having worked with labels and artists, I saw how broken the music submission landscape was and wanted to streamline it so it worked for both artists and labels."
Ed Brew is the Founder of 3 companies, created with the mission to make the music industry better and easier for artists to succeed. Ed is now the CEO of LabelRadar, a platform that allows artists to directly submit clips of their music directly to their favorite record labels. He is on a mission to make the demo submission process easier for artists, labels and promoters.
Ed unintentionally got his first break in music after he put together a successful music compilation to raise money for a charity event. Soon after, he joined a content licensing agency, working with popular Youtube channels like Trap Nation and Proximity (creators of Digital Mirage Digital Festival) to secure the rights to music for their playlists.
Once he got his feet wet in licensing, Ed expanded his experience into sync licensing and soon created his first company, Visceral Music, focusing on securing music from electronic artists for film, TV and video games.
