You can call Leah Hextall a lot of things, but lazy is not one of them. Determined to make a career in broadcasting, Leah has constantly rolled up her sleeves, worked hard in pursuit of her dream. While she found success along the way, it was setbacks that set the stage for the climb to the next rung in her amazing journey. From Brandon Manitoba to Boston and Toronto (with stops along the way) she aids her dues in each job that she took. However, it was the cutback from Sportsnet that lead her to consider life in the play-by-play booth.

Calling junior games on nights and weekends for free, she followed the advice of Doc Emrick and simply called games wherever she could. Where did that lead? Leah became the first woman to call an NCAA championship game and then the first woman to call an NHL game!

Most recently, she was named as one of the new voices of the NHL on ESPN.

Looking for an advantage. We hear the term all the time in sports (and in life). Parents in man facets of raising their kids do all sorts of things (some legal, some not) trying to ensure the success (whatever that may mean) of their children.

Personally, I know parents who paid serious money to have their kids play way above their skill level, knowing their child would rarely play in games to be a member of a higher level hockey team with hopes that in just practicing and being around higher talent kids would rub off on their child. I know parents who put their kids in programs like Kumon at a very, very young age to try to get them a leg up on school. Famously, some are currently serving time for cheating their kid's way into US colleges.

Freakenomics, several years back studied birth month as an indicator of success in pro sports in "football" aka soccer. Others examined birth month and age as a factor in the NHL.

You can bet, would-be parents out there definitely planned their kid's "arrival" accordingly.

I'm sure you know parents who have moved from one place or another trying to help get their kids a better chance.

Well, one former European athlete turned football executive has looked at location as a factor of success. Rasmus Ankersen has written numerous books and now created a movie about a town in Europe of 50,000 people that has produced 5 NHL players, outranking several North American cities in the same time frame.

Ankersen looks at the factors the size of a town may play in the likelihood of success in making it in sports.

Toronto Raptors superfan Nav Bhatia has been immortalized in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He is officially the first fan to be honored at the Basketball HOF.

When you think of the legends of news media, the name Walter Cronkite is likely the first one to come to mind, certainly in the United States. In Canada, it's without question Peter Mansbridge. For over 30 years Mansbridge was the host of the CBC (Canada's national broadcaster) nightly news, The National. a feat that earning him the honor of being the longest-serving active anchor among the big three networks in Canada.

No matter the news event over those years, Peter covered them. The fall of the Berlin Wall, the tragedy of September 11, the constitutional crisis, Nelson Mandela, Princess Diana's death, and countless international elections are all stories Peter either covered from afar or was right there on location bringing the news to Canadians.

Raised in Brandon Manitoba Daren Millard was a day one employee of Rogers Sportsnet, the network that was "never designed to succeed". Millard lasted 20 years with Rogers before parting ways with the network he helped build.

Most often between Nick Kypreos and Doug MacLean and a frequent guest or guest of Prime Time Sports Millard did it right. He made his way up the food chain starting in a small town and working all the way up to the big leagues.

What was originally described as an amicable parting of ways, actually stung when Sportsnet elected not to renew his contract on August 1, 2018. While he grew tired of hearing people tell him that everything happens for a reason, his hard work, stellar reputation paid off as he and his family relocated to Vegas to join the Golden Knights in what has been a magical launch to the franchise.

In sports, there are great stories behind athletes, coaches, and staff. Those stories tend to come to life as a result of amazing storytellers, typically in the media. It is rare that those in the media share their own stories, as those who report on others tend to be relatively private about their own lives and/or they don't believe their own tale is all that remarkable or interesting.

Jon Paul Morosi's story is a really good one and in the years I have covered the media beat, I've yet to discover anyone with a bad thing to say about him.

Growing up in a small town in Michigan he was a 5'8 high school quarterback, he was raised right and yadda yadda yadda ended up at Harvard, where he earned a degree in environmental studies. Somehow, connecting dots he ends up living in Ann Arbor Michigan and is amongst the top baseball reporters in the country. A prominent presence on MLB Network, and now adding in NHL work for the NHL Network JP's story is quite amazing. If only it stopped there. He is married to, in his own words a real hero, a doctor, together they are parents of three children. He continues to interview and advise young students in their desires to attend Harvard.

Twelve years ago the notion of replicating a radio-like interview was something aspirational to me. The idea that I could interview someone and have people listen in and ask questions radio-style seemed very cool. Not knowing what the hell I was doing, with literally no interview experience at all, I was fortunate enough to land Mattew Sekeres as a subject, and he agreed to be guest number one. At the time Sekeres was a sports reporter for the Globe and Mail out in Vancouver. Fast forward 12 years and he is now embarking on a massively important and foundational new career, launching a live streaming radio program sans radio, as for me, well I am in Seattle still learning how to interview people.

Sekeres has the unique distinction of being part of a radio station that was actually winning the local battle against the competition only to have the mothership pull the plug. TSN Radio Vancouver was beating the completion when Bell decided to change the format, giving up on sports talk in Vancouver, ceding the market to Rogers. Sekeres and his partner Price were the drive home show hosts and they are now moving into the digital era.

In this episode, Matt talks about getting the boot while winning, what the landscape may mean in a digital era when people return to work and how live content is still critical in this day and age. Jonah and Matt then discuss the changes that are coming in the rating world; what it means for advertisers when they have real, timely data to sell, and how listener engagement, specifically women will benefit.

Finally, the CFL is currently in a quiet period as their fans await what a partnership with the XFL will look like. Sekeres is a HUGE supporter of the league and he is having to consider the possibility that 3 down football could be dead in order for the league to survive in Canada.

Andrew Walker grew up in rural Saskatchewan before making his way to Calgary, where he joined Rogers-owned sports radio show. Several years later he was about to move to Vancouver to cross-streams and join the AM radio scene with Bell in Vancouver when Don Kollins came knocking. The Fan 590 in Toronto needed a new partner for incumbent Greg Brady and their morning drive show. Toronto scooped Walker out from Vancouver and off he went to the Fan 590 where he stayed for 4 years.

His stay in the morning slot was not all that long as Dean Blundell was brought in to host an all-new morning show with, Walker by his side. The move did not sit well with Andrew and as a result, despite a press release being issued naming him as Blundell's sidekick, Walker declined, and as a result, joined Brady in the slot once occupied by Tim and Sid.

Unlike Brady, Walker remained at The Fan after cuts were made until he was moved to his new home, Sportsnet 650 Vancouver where he helped launch the station, now co-hosting their afternoon drive show.

Doug Smith has covered the Toronto Raptors from day one. He raised his hand when the Toronto Star was looking for someone to take on the role of a beat reporter when Toronto landed it's NBA expansion franchise. Now, some 25 years later, Smith is the only print reporter still covering the team. To say he's seen it all would be a massive understatement. Long-time media executive Don Kollins joins Jonah Sigel to discuss why all the job losses in media- especially sport media are counter-productive, why the pivot to the team and player-controlled stories are going to hurt the medium, and why radio as we know it is dead.

There is not much that Gary Lawless has not seen or covered in the world of sports. He worked in Winnipeg covering the Jets for the local paper and also hosted his own, top-rated sports talk show forever. He began as a beat writer and columnist for the Winnipeg Free Press. He covered the Winnipeg Blue Bombers(CFL). In 2006 he created "Hustler and Lawless", a radio show on TSN 1290 AM, where he remained until 2017. Lawless regularly appeared as an analyst on multiple television programs, including TSN That's Hockey, TSN Sportscentre and TSN's broadcasts of Winnipeg Jets home games. He also contributed regular columns and feature stories on TSN's website as their Senior Correspondent.

In Vegas, he is the team insider. He creates content for their website, handles color commentary on the radio side, do pre and post-game as well as having a first intermission segment as well.

Without question Paul Godfrey has seen it all in his private and public life in Toronto. He is largely viewed as being the driving force behind Toronto landing the Toronto Blue Jays and then ensuring that their current stadium, the Rogers Center got built in 1989. Godfrey later went on to lead the Blue Jays after running the Toronto Sun Newspaper. He's moved on to lead the National Post where he is current Executive Chairman.

If government approval at any level is going to be required as well as the Toronto Blue Jays/ Rogers in a new stadium there is no one better connected or insightful than Paul Godfrey. He's done almost all the jobs, and knows all the parties involved.

Canadian born, Geoff Baker has covered some big news stories, many of which have turned into controversy in which all of them the veracity of his stories was proved.

You may recall Tim Johnson managed the Toronto Blue Jays, only to be fired for lying to the players about a Vietnam career that didn't exist.

Carlos Delgado, Baker reported was no longer standing for God Bless America during games in Puerto Rico. The story was picked up by major USA new outlets forcing Delgado to have to address the issue with the MLB media.

The same type of attention to detail accompanied Baker when he arrived in Seattle covering the Seattle Mariners. Baker broke the story on dysfunction with the Mariners management team as part of a story involving Eric Wedge and Howard Lincoln.

In a male dominated industry, even with women making huge strides there are still women like Michelle Sturino telling their tales, and the fact that Rogers Sportsnet Fan 590 still has no female hosts it is absolutely stunning (in a great way) that Linda Cohn is ESPN’s longest-tenured SportsCenter anchor and in early 2016 was recognized for anchoring her 5,000th SportsCenter, the most of any anchor in ESPN history.

Linda has earned all of her stripes, she rose through the ranks, paying cameramen chocolate chip cookies to help her record demo tapes. Having played high school hockey she has been a fan of and ambassador for the game throughout her ESPN career hosting In the Crease, a nightly hockey program on ESPN+ during the NHL season.

Linda also currently hosts her own show on Mad Dog 82, on XM Radio.

In 2017, Linda was inducted into the National Sports Media Association (NSMA) Hall of Fame.

Several years back I was waiting for my son to finish a skating lesson in Toronto when I got a tap on my shoulder. "Are you the Toronto Sports Media guy?" a familiar voice asked me. I had never been asked that before so it took me a second to answer yes and recognize that the familiar voice was that of former Toronto Maple Leaf player turned broadcaster Nick Kypreos.

What I learned from that day forward which is echoed in his new book, “Undrafted: Hockey, Family, and What it Takes to Be a Pro.” Nick Kypreos is a good guy with strong family roots and a genuine appreciation for hard work and a recognition for where he came from and who he is.

On August 10th, after over 15 years in the sports broadcast world in Toronto Michelle Sturino took to Twitter announcing she had enough.

"Whatever you think or believe about how far we have come as an industry/society in terms of equality simply isn’t true. Sexism and gender bias are still prominent.”

Tired of being treated differently and generally fed up with the lack of progress in the male dominated world Michelle typed her goodbye. It wasn't only gender bias that bothers Michelle. additionally she feels that mostly only woman of a certain look get picked and advance:

"I know I have been passed over because I don't fit a certain mold. I'm 5'9 with an athletic build that intimidates most so I don't match a B.S. stereotype of what a woman should look like. We come in all shapes and sizes and are not represented as such."

Who is to blame for where we are according to Michelle?:

"The sports media industry (much like most industries in N.A.) is run by insecure middle aged men who have a narrow minded idea of beauty and are scared of change. But guess what? Change is inevitable."

Michelle sat down with Jonah Sigel to talk about her story, her mission and what she hopes happens now.

We hear all the time of good stories where athletes come from nowhere to be stars in their sport at all levels, so why not add one from the other side to the feel good list? We all could use a heart warming tale no?

While others in minor league baseball were holding on to dreams and living the stereotypical life of a minor leagues, Dirk Hayhurst was writing down stories that turned into best selling novels. Hayhurst talks about how awful and unfair the minor league baseball system is, how he blew it in Toronto (his words) and how one of his media outlets resembled what many would have considered akin to a scene from Animal House, including when he told his bosses of the behavior he was told that if continued with his complaint he would be fired.

Canadian hockey player Brock McGillis played both OHL and professional hockey . Brock played professionally in both the United States and Europe . While all of that alone is a great Canadian story, you probably know Brock McGillis as he was the first professional hockey player to openly come out as gay.

Since leaving the game, Brock has become an influential advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Amidst the Dan Carcillo junior hockey class action lawsuit on the issue of hazing, Brock has been vocal on the issue of the culture of hockey. Dan was on Roger Sportsnet's Fan 590 last Friday talking about the issue.

Jerry Howarth came to Toronto via Salt Lake City and Tacoma WA, a long way from California. Yet, Toronto for Jerry is home and we caught up with him today prior to his regular bridge game. Jerry sounds identical today to the old tapes you may find of him doing college football from the 1970's . More importantly, you can tell from spending just a few minutes with Jerry that he remains true to himself without wavering one bit.

Jerry is personable, friendly and a pleasure to speak with. He remembers every detail as if it was yesterday always applying the lens of good family person first and then baseball second.

Jerry shares his stories, thoughts and feelings about Toronto, playing in Canada vs. the United States, how he almost derailed a trade and his thoughts on how Alex Anthopolous exit was booted like a random infield grounder through Manny Lee's legs.

With dire news around us, including today's grandstanding, chest thumping, bargaining by MLB Jerry will hopefully bring you back to a better time when games where, you know being played.

From coast to coast and around the globe there may not be a more recognize-able active face or name in hockey than Ron MacLean. From 1986 to today, minus the two first years of the Rogers NHL deal Ron has been the host of not only the NHL on Hockey Night in Canada but also the host of the controversial Coaches Corner with Don Cherry as well as the Olympics and countless other sporting events.

The former hockey referee started his broadcast career flipping 8-track cassettes while in high school in Red Deer Albert subbing in for a frined of his who also turned him onto refereeing. With the plan to get a degree to become a teacher, Ron continued his brodcast career on late night AM radio which quickly got him to doing the weather on TV and other shows. This was enough to keep him from college and provided the necessary moment for John Shannon at Hockey Night In Canada to offer him a position.

When Dave Hodge exited Hockey Night Ron was handed the set of keys to both the hosting duties and to working alongside Don Cherry.

Ron has not spent much time talking about life post Coaches Corner but here is sharing new insights on his career, hockey and of course Donald S. Cherry and that night of November 19, 2019 when the house came crashing down on Cherry and Coaches Corner.

Ron should be buried in Stanley Cup finals right now. Instead he is busy with other things, including an incredible vlogcast of his own and now spending time with us.

One day, a college quarterback at Central Michigan University who was born, raised and living in Windsor Ontario (just outside of Detroit) got a call from a scout from the Montreal Expos to try out for their team. The rest is history. You've heard him on the radio and you've seen him on TV. If you are at all like me you probably don't know much about Joe Siddall. This is his story and it is a mix of every emotion you have in your arsenal.

After multiple years in the minor leagues Joe made it to the bigs, playing for the Montreal Expos under Felipe Alou. A defensive catcher he enjoyed stops with the Marlins, Tigers and Red Sox before hanging them up and becoming a bullpen guru for the Tigers.

Joe and his wife, both from Windsor, living in the same neighborhood they grew up in lived what sounds like a typical life with 4 kids until tragically their youngest son Kevin lost a heroic battle to Cancer. Kevin was 14 at the time In the fog of grieving, Jerry Howarth reached out and the next thing he knew he was the radio play by play voice of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Joe's a thoughtful broadcaster who has endured himself to Blue Jays fans of all ages. His mix of personal experience, dedication to honesty and integrity and his family have continued to guide him in his life.

Admittedly, I knew very little about the man behind the voice that I've grown to like telling me stories while providing analysis. I know some now, but look forward to learning more in the future.

When we think about the shutdown of sports we think about players, we think about fans, GM's, coaches, play by play teams and all those directly involved in sports as perceive them. We often don't think of those we don't hear or see and there is a large army of them out there; the freelancers.

Leagues, teams, networks and outlets had been doing the best they can in most cases to address the needs of their people as the shutdown heads towards the 4th month.

However, there is a large group of individuals who aren't affiliated with any outlet or team but who spend as much time getting us the coverage we want; the Freelancers.

John Horn is a freelancer who plays a large role in enabling the sports content we love. Unaffiliated, John, like many freelancers is able to work for many outlets, wearing many hats likely working much much more than a typical full time employee.

While sports is shutdown, John represents the forgotten. He is not collecting a pay check. He is not working. John is a Freelancer and this is his story!

John Couch was employee 54 at Apple, hired directly by Steve Jobs. He became Vice President Product and led the launch of the Lisa computer. After a quick tour in biotech, John once again answered Steve's call and returned to Apple as the first ever Vice President of Education in 2002.

With the sporting world shutdown Danny spent some time with Jonah SIgel talking about life in big leagues, covering MLB and NCAA basketball.
