A Personal Statement from Ray Chenez:

I am delighted to present a very special project close to my heart called “BroadRAY!” With the help of my agency, Parnassus Arts Productions, I am in the process of recording a full-length CD and organizing an international tour. This project is a true labor of love and I have a vision far grander than you can possibly imagine.

The project has already been featured in the media on Broadway World, Channel 7 WKBW Buffalo, Parterre.com, & Modern Singer Magazine.

The efforts required to produce such a project are immense, and each and every day I am pouring my heart and soul into bringing this project to life. It’s financially very difficult to produce a top-quality album in today’s market, in which record albums are no longer providing much (if any) funding. This is why i can use your help to bring this project to reality. Through Crowdfunding on Indiegogo and individual efforts, I have already raised 8.000 EUR from people in 10 different countries! But in order to fully realize this project in its best form, I need to double that!

Having lived in London, the United States, Tanzania, and South Africa, he says he has experienced homophobia in many forms, both overt and very subtle. He has some solutions as to how to combat such homophobia as he chats with Hendrik in Cape Town.

As he grew up in a Muslim household, he thought his parents would disown him when he finally told them he was gay. He did not expect the reaction he got from his father.

He also chats about his first single called So Gay. He explains where the songs come from and how it has inadvertently turned him into an activist. He received lots of feedback, both positive and negative, which has had the effect of starting a conversation.

Hunter The Voice is currently in Cape Town where he is working on a show which he will debut soon. In this interview with Hendrik, he talks about his journey as a musician. He started singing in the shower but eventually went for vocal training before he decided to pursue his passion. He talks about the links between music and fashion too. Hunter the Voice has just released a new single, called Mona Lisa Man. The latest hit show from the Mother City AUNTY MERLE THE MUSICAL finally comes to Joburg Theatre, from 1 February 2019.

Written by comedian Marc Lottering, and directed by Lara Foot, AUNTY MERLE THE MUSICAL has received no fewer than 4 Fleur Du Cap Theatre Nominations. The show enjoyed two sell-out seasons last year, and will be back in Cape Town for a third season, by public demand.

“a musical with an international punch, a debut production that astonishes with its assuredness.” – Karen Rutter, WeekendSpecial

“…witty one-liners that are met with sassy comebacks.” – Kirsten Delcie, Whats On In Cape Town

High drama unfolds in Belgravia Road, Athlone, as Merle’s daughter, Abigail, announces her engagement to her boyfriend, Alan. As Merle puts it: “He’s a good-looking white chap!” But it’s never smooth sailing in the world of musicals when Abigail’s twisted and corrupt ex, Denver Paulse – who holds a dodgy top job with the SABC – is determined to get her back and, if not, threatens to reveal a very dark secret which is bound to tear the lovers apart.

Aunty Merle, The Musical boasts a talented South African cast including Marc Lottering as Aunty Merle, Tracey-Lee Oliver as Abigail, Paul du Toit as Alan, Loukmaan Adams as Denver Paulse, with a stellar support cast including Royston Stoffels, Tankiso Mamabolo, Gina Shmukler, Adrian Galley, Carmen Maarman, Zandile Madliwa, Sizwesandile Mnisi, Anzio September, Crystal Finck and Austin Rose – accompanied by a live 8-piece band.

Twenty-two original songs, with lyrics by Marc Lottering and Tarryn Lamb; musical direction by Alistair Izobel and choreography by Grant Van Ster, have earned the cast thunderous standing ovations.

Hendrik and Musi discuss the show.

Cirque Infernal, direct from Europe, is inspired by Federico Fellini, Wim Wenders and Tim Burton, promising to offer non-stop captivating entertainment with astonishing and death-defying acts. The show was created by Danny Varanne, who was previously seen in Le Grand Cirque Adrenaline as part of the motorbike act, presented at Joburg Theatre in 2012. Born and raised in a traditional family of performers, Danny started as a showman in his parent’s burlesque theatre in France from an early age. Along with his brothers, Danny started a motorcycle daredevil show. They toured the world and became internationally acclaimed for their skills. In 2012, Danny received two awards at the prestigious Festival International Du Cirque De Monte-Carlo, and an official Guinness World Record! His new show, Cirque Infernal, features some of the world’s top circus performers, and it certainly taints death during every performance. The story starts with a young tightrope walker who falls to his death during a performance. Death makes a deal with him in order to either spare his life or takes his life, the life of the other performers and that of the audience. What follows is a performance of mostly death-defying acts and displays of skill rarely seen in South Africa. The absolutely gorgeous Wilson Stey from France is the funambulist or tightrope walker. His ancestors have been walking the tightrope since the Middle Ages and at only 23 years old, he takes your breath away several times during the evening. The first is when he swings precariously on a 15-meter pole and barely avoids hitting part of the theatre roof. Later he crosses the tightrope on a unicycle going over the stage meters high up in the air without a safety net or harness. The danger of death is very real and the audience audibly gasped several times during this young man’s daredevil performance. Kudo’s to him for acknowledging the audience even during the riskiest of moments, precariously balancing on a chair on the high wire. Pro Sufi dancer Aurelia Baque is a native of Toulouse, France. She spent half a year in an Indian Ashram, learning and practising the daily the art of Sufi dancing. And boy can she twirl! How she doesn’t fall off the stage in a drunken daze beats me, just watching her had me dizzy after just a few short minutes. Even the classical ballet dancer in our midst watched with awe as Aurelia just kept on turning, turning, turning, until we thought ...
