There is push in our culture to go hard, do more, and build it quickly. We tend to think that if we don’t see immediate results that “it”, whatever it is, is not working. There are some instances where that kind of thinking and approach may be true but for the most part, anything worth building takes time. It takes perseverance and consistent small steps to build a thing. And that includes our best family.

They may be the topics that you dodge because they make you both angry, defensive, sad, and hurt. However, engaging in these talks shows you care about your spouse and your marriage.

There isn't a rule book on how to do motherhood. But there are an awful lot of opinions from friends and family, our church community, and on social media about it. And as a result, many of us question the decisions we make, especially when they are not the same as everyone else's.
However, we can be confident in the choices we make when we stand strong in what God calls us to do.

Envy and jealousy are natural responses to the human tendency to compare ourselves to others. But when left unchecked, when we allow them to fester and we hold onto them, these feelings can cause problems within our families. Left to grow over a long period of time and they can cause sibling rivalries and broken relationships that continue way into adulthood.

Money can be an uncomfortable thing to talk about. Many moms would say that talking about money, career, and motherhood together is complicated. While other moms might say, it's unladylike or taboo to talk about how much money you make or how you spend it. Did you know that 79% of men attending evangelical churches use pornography? Even though porn is destructive, both to individuals and families, many people are not getting help. Porn addicts do not generally reach out for help until something forces them to. Because of shame, bad advice, and a lack of education about porn addiction, wives do not reach out for assistance until they are desperate.
Today’s guest is trying to change that. Rosie Makinney wrote a book called Fight For Love. She believes it is no longer enough to pick up the wounded; we have to go on the offensive.

It’s not very long after becoming a parent that we realize that family life is always changing. We create systems, rhythms, and routines to make our lives run smoothly and then before we realize it we transition into another stage of parenting. You don’t have to be a victim of the changing seasons of life.

How do you celebrate your family when it’s not “normal”? We are bombarded with messages about who we are supposed to be. Social Media makes us ultra aware of what other people are doing, how they are living, what they are achieving.
If we are not careful the culture at large, our local culture, or our extended family’s culture can cause us to fit a mold that wasn’t made for us.

The positive effects of music on human well-being have long been acknowledged. Music is all around us it plays a big role in how we think and how we feel. The way we choose to engage with it has an impact on our family’s culture as well.
I've found that many people are familiar with the word "coaching" when it comes to sports, but don't know what a life coach does, what it means to have one, or how you could benefit from having one. Having a life coach had changed my life and my family’s. So I thought it was worth talking about here… because we do family culture coaching!
Do you ever feel stuck? It could be from overwhelm, discouragement, or a lack of purpose. When we take time to sit and process what’s informed who and where we are today we can move past the stagnant places both in our life and in our family.
It’s that time of year again when many of us set goals and identify the things we want to change in our life. Goal setting and lifestyle shifts, especially when it comes to our family, can feel overwhelming but guess what, it doesn’t have to be. We are sharing with you a simple practice we like to do each year that helps us set our sights on the upcoming year with less dread and more enthusiasm.
What do you think of when I say the word hospitality? What comes to mind for you will be different than what comes to mind for others. It looks different in other parts of our country and the world. No matter where hospitality is practiced it helps build community and make others feel valued.
As a family we do a 360 peer review, just like the ones in an organization, to build our family’s culture. We’ve found that giving and receiving feedback in this way has had an incredible impact on our family. This process isn’t always easy. However, the ability to do this does not come naturally to us. But the good news is that this is something that can be learned and practiced.
We are back part 2 of Giving and Receiving feedback. Last week we talked to you about receiving feedback and this week we want to discuss giving feedback.
Giving and receiving feedback is key to the growth and health of any culture, including the family. We often avoid it because let’s be honest, it’s not always easy to do. It requires humility, plus I believe it is a skill that takes some practice. In this two-part episode, we are going to talk about how we can give and receive feedback that will not harm, but help strengthen our family.
Good communication is a skill. Unfortunately, we’re not born with the ability to talk with one another in a way that makes us feel heard and understood. If we did, our relationships and marriages would be much easier. My biggest frustration in marriage is trying to communicate with someone that not’s like me. This is where empathy comes in.
According to a survey I took back in April. one of the biggest obstacles in imagining, planning and building your family culture was not wanting to do this work on your own. Fo whatever the reason you find yourself alone in this process, I want you to know that you can do this! You can take small steps that will help your family live with purpose. I know because I did.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are quickly approaching. Most people I know either look forward to this season or dread it. Guess what? I dread it. Well not really, but sort of! That was until we found a way to focus and simplify or holiday experience. It changed the way we approach the holidays and we know it will change the way you approach yours.
In this hectic world we live in, we often only have the time and energy to correct our kids, discuss to-dos, and make sure everyone is where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be there. We are juggling home life, work, marriage, schedules. It’s no wonder we barely have time for connection.
One might think going about our business without slowing down to connect would help us get more done and make us more efficient but in fact, it does not.
Our relationship with family members grows by spending time together and talk with one another. And not just small talk either, our relationship grows when we talk about what we think, what we believe, and what matters to us the most. It also grows when we have fun together.
Teaching children to be obedient is really important, however, when it comes to building a healthy culture, the goal is not perfect behavior. It's creating a team with shared values and beliefs, people that work together toward a common mission and purpose.
Reports show that most parents don't talk to their kids about money. The main reason is that they don't feel confident about sharing personal finance lessons with them. As a result, the vast majority of kids enter the real world without ever learning about money in school or at home. If we don’t teach your kids how to manage money, somebody else will.
In some companies when you start a job there is an employee handbook. It included policies and procedures. It is an incredible resource but even the most thorough handbooks can’t prepare you for every situation. We see this in family life as well. As your kids get older, we will not be there to tell them what to do in every situation. But our family culture can!
Driving culture is primarily a teaching function. If you don’t know what you are teaching, you won't do it well. That’s why taking the time to map out what you value and believe is so crucial. It creates a curriculum for the way you will do life and it sets our children up for future success.
Hands down the ideal time to start imagining, building, and creating your family's culture is when you first start your family. Then as time passes and you go through different seasons it’s crucial to revisit your values, beliefs, and practices that you have in your home.
It's amazing if you're able to do that however, what if you hadn't? Don’t worry We’re here today to tell you that is never too late to take control of your family culture and begin to lead it with purpose and intention.
Are you and your family busy doing life together but not really connecting? Do you have a vision for what you want your family to be but don't know how to achieve it? We get it, because we’ve been there. Join us for season 5 of the show as we help you imagine, plan, and build your best family.
When you look at your calendar does it reflect what you say is most important to you? At the end of your life you will not wish you sent more time working. However you may regret not spending more time with your family. We all have work to do, but what if stopped thinking of ourselves as a businessman with a family and instead, a family man with a business?
Every single one of us has difficult people in our lives. You know, those pesky people that never behave the way we want them to, who suck the life out of you. I prefer to to just avoid them but that’s not always an option. Sometimes we just need to dig our heels in and love them.
Our family culture is built on our beliefs, values, and the things we practice on a regular basis. One of the ways that we pass on our beliefs and values to our children is through the conversations we have together. Whether you stumbled upon a teachable moment or you set aside time to talk, these are the conversations you want to be sure to have.
Did you know every family is known for something? What to do you what your family to be known for? Naming and leaning into what we want our family to be known for releases us from the burden of comparing ourselves to others or wishing we were different. It gives us permission to be who we were uniquely created to be.

Did you know that when we have a foundation of peace and order in your home we can handle the ups and downs of life and our busy schedules? Not only that but your environment can improve your workflow, boost your mood and creativity, and promote connection with family and friends.
Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen. It creates a foundation that allows us to communicate well. While it involves these particular skills, literacy is so much more than this. It is about learning to use reading and writing in real and important ways. As parents we can encourage their literacy, and then keep it going by the simple everyday things we do in our home.

There are so many things in life that we can be fearful of. But seeing life in light of the cross will help us avoid fear, overcome fear when we can’t avoid it, and live beyond fear when we don’t overcome it.
Parenting can be both thrilling AND and overwhelming at times. There are highs, and there are lows. Then, just when we think we have it figured out things change. However, having a few go-to strategies to in place with help us weather the ups and down and maintain our sanity.
We are all drawn to the heroic. It’s in the movies we watch, the news we hear, and the books we read. But what can we do when we want to be a truly heroic man but don’t know how?
In a world of constant chaos and conflict, our homes can be places of peace where souls find rest. We all crave a place of refuge, for beauty, for comfort, and the art of creating such a space is called “placemaking.”
Culture is what sets the standard in our home. It’s the unwritten code by which we make decisions and its the undercurrent of the life we have with our family. When we decide ahead of time what we stand for and who we want to me we have a better chance of seeing the family we want become a reality.
Everyone values something. Once you have identified what it is that you value you are better able to make it show up in your life, allowing you to be successful in what matters the most to you.
Procrastination, lack of team spirit, and decreased engagement are all signs of a negative culture both in organizations and families. This often happens when the vision and ultimately the culture is not decided ahead of time.
Every family has a particular way they work together to solve problems, achieve goals, and connect with one another. It’s their Family Culture! Just like business culture, family culture is either created by default, subject to the whims of its members, or through intentionality.
At a young age, kids start to worry. They typically worry about things like grades, tests, their changing bodies, fitting in with friends, getting hurt, or whether or not they'll make the team. Thankfully, parents can help kids face their fears and tackle worry with intention. In this episode we’ll talk about the simple steps parents can take to help their kids overcome worry plus the role stories can play in shaping your family’s culture.
Science has proven that feeling connected is a human need. Families with a high degree of connection are more engaged, more productive, and more rooted in their shared values. It’s that secret ingredient that make us feel like we are a part of something special. In this episode talking about why connection is so important and the three ways we can connect with our family members.

That’s why taking the time to map out your family’s culture, values, and vision for the future is crucial. It creates a curriculum for the way you will do life. In this episode we are talking with someone who is created a podcast to pass down to his children the things he wants them to know.
Young girls have a tendency to size themselves up, measure themselves and decide who’s inferior or superior to them. It’s awful. It keeps them from being their best selves and enjoying the life they’ve been given. Whether we feel better or worse about ourselves after the comparison, it rarely leads to joy. On the podcast we are talking about how we can help our kids break free from comparison and embrace who they were created to be.
The definition of a team is “more than one person working together toward a common goal.” The dictionary makes it sound easy, but I know from experience that teamwork in a family can be difficult. Today we will be talking about why teamwork is vital to a healthy culture plus we'll be interviewing someone who has had a front row to watch how teamwork can change the game.
Culture whether in an organization or family is made up of instinctive, repetitive habits, and emotional responses. One of the most common ways an organization does that is through rituals. And just like in an organization, culture is not created by a one-off team-building exercise and a good orientation day, but in the rituals, and traditions, and rites of passage that are practiced by its people.
I know it's been a few weeks since the new year started but I'm still thinking about 2019 and It may bring. We definitely set goals however as I continue to think of the upcoming year I’m focusing on the routines, rhythms, and habits that will build the family culture we want here in our home.
This is the time when many of us set goals and identify the rhythms and habits we want to cultivate in this upcoming year. This process starts off with accessing where we are at as a family, identifying the areas we had success, and acknowledging the places where we tried something, but it didn’t work out quite the way we planned.
Opening up our lives to others can seem scary, but it doesn't have to be. Just like simple steps over time can change the culture of your home they can also change the culture of your neighborhood. If you are looking to love your neighbors and but aren't sure where to start, this episode will inspire and equip you to take action towards creating a connection with others and building the community where you live.
A strong intentionally created culture is a game changer in organizations, ministry, and home. It can determine whether you fail or succeed, achieve your goals or miss the mark. In the military it’s the difference between life and death. If you are not convinced that culture matters, this episode with persuade you otherwise.
A healthy family culture is marked by openness. The ability to talk with one another, and ask questions without the fear of shame in all areas including sex! Even those with a strong family culture may shy away from this topic. Today’s episode will shift your thinking about when, how, and what you say about the important subject.
What if you picked one value that was really important to you and tooks steps, not once on a while, but everyday to live it out? Your life would be transformed! And what if you did it with friends. The impact would be exponential.
Did you that when you make those changes is just as important as what changes you make? Recognizing the rhythms of our day, week, month and year will set us up for success in building family culture.
You don’t have to spend all of your time coordinating schedules and putting away the stuff you’ve accumulated in our home. Minimalism can save you time, resources, and energy that are vital to intentionally build culture in your home.
The way we celebrate the holidays shapes our family culture. The traditions and customs around Birthdays, Easter, Thanksgiving, and yes even Valentine’s Day creates experiences in our home that are remembered by our children years after they leave our home.
Knowing your why gives you the confidence you need to pursue a life with purpose, not just as an individual but as a family.
We’ve put together a short list of resources that have helped us along in the culture building process and in many cases changed the way we think about family culture.
Faith is integral to many families and it plays an important part in bringing people together. When we establish a culture of faith in our homes we have a greater chance of passing our faith onto our children.
It’s easy for parents to have big ideas about what they want their family to look like but then get discouraged in their everyday. It’s important for you to know that we’ve all experienced this.
Today we are talking with Emily Sue Allen. We hope her words will inspire you to stay the course when it comes to establishing what is important to you.
Within a workplace or organization, regular meetings with team members are a given. They keep you informed, help you achieve goals and ensure everyone is on the right track, and provide an opportunity to innovate as a team. Weekly meetings within a family can do the same.
Have you ever wondered “could I be addicted to my phone?” I feel like that question has definitely crossed all our minds at some point. With so much technology and social media available, it’s only a matter of time before we feel like we just can’t live without it.
Making big changes can be scary, especially when those changes affect not only you but the ones you love.
Today we are learning about a tool that Olympic athletes have used for decades to improve performance. It might surprise you what it is and how it can be used to build family culture.
Many organizations hold yearly employee performance reviews. These evaluations reinforce what their managers expect in the workplace but also provide employers with information to use when making decisions, such as promotions, pay raises, and layoffs. In addition, many organizations utilize the 360 peer review which is an assessment of interpersonal skills from an employee’s peers. We used the same format with our children and incorporated it into our yearly retreat.
In this episode, we are talking with Jen Schmidt. She recently wrote a book called Just Open the Door. At first glance, it appears to be a book about hospitality, but it’s far more than that. It’s about “How One Invitation Can change a Generation”
Where you live has a huge impact on your family culture. It may determine how much time you spend with your family, how you work, how you play, what you eat, and even how you interact with others. So, what happens to your family culture when you move somewhere that’s drastically different than where you are now?
When people hear the word tension it’s not always a positive thing. However, there are 2 types of tensions - healthy and unhealthy. This episode will help you shift your perspective on tension and explain why it is an important part of growth as both an individual, and an organization, and a family.

We are all passionate about something but few of us can say that those passions are a part of our lives. In this episode, we will be addressing what to consider when making what matters to you most show up in your every day.
Knowing your core values and passions is crucial to living a life of purpose with your family. In this episode, we will be talking about passions, what they are, and why they are important to not only identify and but incorporate into your family’s culture.
It’s great to know what your values are but they are meaningless if they are on their own.
We have all seen the posters. The ones that include a beautiful image and a list of values that a company stands for. These large signs proclaim what’s important to its founder, however, the organization's members go about their days continuing with habits that just don’t line up with the words displayed.
In this episode, we are talking more about values, and why simply knowing your what yours are, is not enough to build a strong family culture.
Everyone values something. Once you have identified what it is that you value you are better able to make it show up in your life, allowing you to be successful in what matters the most to you.
Knowing what you want your family to be known for is an important part of creating a thriving family culture. Another critical component is determining your values and living according to them.
