Today we are talking more about the word Hoh, and the phrase Hoh Gah Ih. This is almost always used with past tense. “It’s better if you…”
Today we talk about when Yori is used, how it’s used, and when to use it by itself. There are multiple versions of Yori and I go over differentiating between them.
Today we’re going over two different grammar points, which are Hoh Gah and Yori. We use these in contrast to each other or in a phrase. I explain how to use both of these and how to distinguish between them.
Today we’re talking about a very similar word to Hazu, which is Beki. This word is often paired with Dah, such as Beki-Dah with the accent going downward on Dah.
Today I will talk about the word “Hazu.” This is basically the first and most simplistic of the musts or shoulds in Japanese. I give examples and definitions.
It can often be difficult for new and even intermediate Japanese speakers to come up with the appropriate response to certain questions and sentences, so today I am going to provide you with a few unique responses you can use that will help you sound more fluent and native.
This word usually indicates a question and today we will be diving into how to use this word and the difference between this word and another word similar to it.
Today we’re talking about another adjective that indicates desire, but alongside that showing of desire, we want to do it over a particular item. I talk about Hoshii Garu and Ga Hoshii.
Today we are going to be going over Garu, which is over somebody else. In Japanese we often talk about area of information, which basically is who can say what. I cannot say that you like blue, but I can say I think you like blue. I give examples.
This is when we take a verb and we attach an adjective part to the end. Like the word Nai. To not eat is Tabei Nai. Today we’re doing something very similar and talking about Tai.
When using Kotoh it’s a nominalizer so everything before Kotoh is modifying Kotoh. Usually with verbs we’re going to see things ending in base 3 or base Tah, which is usually past tense or present tense. Today we’re talking about “Kotoh ni naru.” Naru is a non volitional act.
Today I go more in depth into Kotoh. We go over the phrase “Kotoh gah, Dekidu.” Using phrases to simplify bigger ideas or sentences.
The phrase “Have you ever…?” is what we will be going over today. I explain how to ask this type of question and give examples.
Monoh is a physical thing, and used like when you say “It’s on the tip of my tongue.” This is used like Kotoh, but has to be used with tangible things rather than intangible things.
Kotoh means thing, or what. In this episode I describe another way to overcome those moments when you can’t think of the right word or words to say. Instead of using filler words, this method has to do with describing the action or thing that you can’t think of.
Today I will discuss this base 4 phrase. This base is a very simple if, having clause A and clause B, the two different parts of our sentences, being one contingent upon the other.
I go over the various bases that we have talked about in previous episodes. I explain what base 4 is, how to use it more effectively along with the word “Bah.”
In this episode of Manga Sensei, John Sensei teaches us our first official Japanese phrase, Ba Yokatta. Before this, we have covered individual parts of grammar, but never whole phrases.
In today's episode, John Sensei gives us a review of the 4th base, Ba. We have covered bases 1-5 before and even gone into depth on specific bases.
This verb means to start. This is a unique verb because of how it is used with other verbs. I explain how and when it’s used.
Today we’re talking about how to use different types of particles together. No-deh, neh, yo, Genki-nah.
There are various different ways to say goodbye to people. Yana is an informal way to say bye to your friends.
This is a particle to make things ambiguous, which often refers to things such as “et cetera,” or “In the like.” I compare Nanca and Nado.
Nanca is a word to replace “um.” The difference about this word though is it has a meaning, kind of like an unknown/abstract object, like “thing-a-ma-jig.”
This word is used in place of “might.” This is used when something has a lower probability of happening than deshoh.
This is used when there is some uncertainty, or something is unknown about which you are speaking. “I will ‘probably’ go to Japan.”
This word is used to give an approximation. It’s one of those words that is also going to be used for time. It has to do with a specific quantity.
This word is usually used with time. It has to do with approximation, for example “About this time,” or around this time.
I give you the different ways to pronounce Amari, and break down how to use this word in different sentences, including mainly negative sentences.
Today we're talking about the various ways to say "I" and the number of ways you can use names. We go over when to use someone's first or last name, and how to refer to yourself, such as male and female forms of "I."
We talk about the word idah, which is the most basic version of the word "while." We go over different versions of "while" and "during," and the most simple versions of these words.
This is when you are referring to yourself in the 3rd person, such as when you say "I didn't think that 'I' could get into college." The second I is in the 3rd person.
This word happens when you put things in base 2. It's another version to express "while." It indicates that the action preceding the verb is taking place at the same time, or it's a simultaneous action expressed by the same clause.
Today I talk about exchange rates and where to place money symbols. I talk about 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10,000, and so forth.
Today we go over pronouns and name suffixes, such as Jibun, which is similar to myself or my. We learn how to refer to girls or boys and talk about the hierarchy of language.
I talk about the very middle symbol you find in many Japanese passage ways or entrances called aida.
This is not the uchi of your home, but the symbol looks like a person under a cage. This is quite similar to idah. We learn how to say "While I was learning Japanese in Japan." This is usually used with state or progressive actions.
“It’s on your right side.” I go over directions like North and South. Where to find the location of an item like a remote, or cell phone.
In this episode I talk about before something happens and after something happens. Both before you and after you, or in front of you and behind you.
Many things in Japanese are often temporal as they are physical, and we’re talking about how this pertains to directions. I go over various types of travel from one place to another.
Today I talk more about formality and how men and women speak differently. Men tend to be less polite when talking versus when women speak.
Kanji can often be a detriment if learned early, which is why I’ve chosen to talk about it later in this podcast. It’s better to get used to the language before trying to learn to understand and read Kanji.
I go more into the different forms of “But.” I talk about “Even though,” and various other words like But.
Today we’re diving a little deeper into how we use formality and why we use Des, Dah, Mas, and the plain form noun.
This is the last episode in the vector verb series. Today I go over some of the confusing things between the different vector verbs and make some clarifications.
Today we are talking about the last verb when it comes to the three major vector verbs, Morau. This one is the easiest version of the three.
I talk about the word Kureru, which goes along with the word Agheru. I talk about going from party B to party A and give some examples.
The first group of vector verbs where it comes from the speaker’s area of information to the listener’s area of information. I will talk about the word Agheru.
There are a number of different types of verbs in Japanese. Some are implied to have more than one meaning. Some are meant to communicate movement. We also have reciprocal verbs and stative verbs. Today and over the next 4 days I’ll be talking about these different types of verbs.
I explain how to talk in this form by improving and increasing the level of diction. The difference between talking to your family members, friends, and business associates.
This particle indicates equal distribution of quantity. Like when passing out a piece of candy, you give one piece of candy to each friend.
Ah ih oo eh oh. I briefly explain the 5 bases or vowels in Japanese and when these are used.
Ni usually needs to go with a verb and is used for an emphasis as to what happens “when.” I talk about what role Toki plays with the word Ni.
Today we are talking about time. There are various symbols and words to use for time, such as “Toki”, which I go over in this episode.
This is exclusively used with negative words. It’s like Bakari, but only used with words that have negative meanings.
Dakeh is used to say things like “Only.” Bakari is more like “Nothing but.” I give examples of the differences between the words.
In today's episode, John Sensei teaches us about demo. Demo means "however" or "but" in Japanese and has many different ways of saying it, depending on the formality and politeness of the situation.
I talk about nominalizers, or anything that changes a part of speech into a noun. I explain where No plays into this.
This is used for things like alone, or just, or merely. I give examples of when to use this word in sentences.
I explain when to use Heh in place of Ni, like when you’re writing a long letter or text. Pronounced more like Eh rather than Heh.
I go over times when it is not necessary for you to use Ni, such as days, dates, or years.
Although we covered ga in the 30-day challenge, we are going more in-depth on the other uses of ga. John Sensei teaches us how to combine 2 sentences into one using ga. John Sensei gives us great examples of this use of ga as well as do's and don't's.
This word indicates a reason or a cause. This word is different from Kara and I explain why and when to use it.
John Sensei teaches the particle madeh, which is used similarly to kara, except it’s used to end sentences.
Today we talk about an additional meaning of Kara. This particle has to do with the reason that you are doing something. Kind of like the word “Because.”
John Sensei teaches how to use kara in a sentence. He goes over how to use it in a regular sentence and then how to use it in various tenses such as past tense.
There is a very similar sounding but different meaning mou. Mou, is an adverb, unlike mo which is a particle. John Sensei teaches us how to pronounce and properly use mou to describe something that has a change of state.
In today's episode, John Sensei goes deeper into more specific uses of mo and how to properly use them. The apporiate placement and use of mo is very important in speaking proper Japanese.
John Sensei introduces us to the next set of Japanese that he will be teaching. He provides clarification on the goals and subject matter that will be covered. John Sensei also provides more tips on how to help learn a new language effectively and helps sort out which vocabulary words are helpful and which are not.
Today, John Sensei urges us to take a break from learning new things and evaluate where we are at with our Japanese language skills thus far. He gives us tips on how to learn a new language most effectively, and how to self evaluate our progress.
Combing the learning to make sense of the Japanese words we have learned thus far. Including the last grammar point — the form “in order to” or a version of “for” in English. Tame = "in order to” in Japanese.
Review of the Manga Sensei 30 Day Challenge. Setting the baseline of learning moving forward. Feel free to go back and review, to carry the knowledge moving forward with new lessons. Patients and practice, remember Japanese takes 10,000 mistakes in order to be fluent.
State of verbing, unique conjugation, focusing on the Japanese equivalent of the ING ending. Two states of verb; condition and action.
Sentence ending particles: Japanese explanation mark and Japanese relation particle. Particle — Ne. Conversation bubbles, and infinitive statements on someone else’s behalf can be considered culturally rude.
Today, John Sensei wants to review some concepts and conjugation of Japanese. This episode is a perfect opportunity for you to review some of what we have learned so far in the 30-day challenge as well as give you some time to listen back to previous episodes or catch up on episodes you may have missed.
Although we have learned about wo before this episode, it is important to know about some exceptions. John Sensei gives us more specific uses of this direct object marker and exceptions for when to use wo and when not to use wo.
John Sensei teaches us about the "kodoasaur" which is used to define ownership of information. This is one of the lessons that the tools located at www.manga-sensei.com are highly recommended in order to completely grasp this unique Japanese concept.
In today's episode we cover adverbs in Japanese. The sentance structure in Japanese is much different than English. John Sensei in an earlier episode compared the placement of nouns, verbs, adverbs, etc. to the way Yoda speaks. John Sensei teaches us about some adverbs and simple sentences to practice our adverb placement.
Today we learn more about Japanese adjectives and their conjugations. John Sensei reviews what we have learned so far and goes deeper into conjugation. Depending on the context and desired politeness, Japanese words will change and it is important to know how to do it properly so you won't offend anyone unintentionally.
In the second lesson about adjectives, John Sensei teaches us how to conjugate adjectives. As we have talked about before, Japanese is a very contexual language and the way you say things changes based on context. John Sensei also teaches us about commonly mixed up adjectives that sound similar in Japanese, such as cute and scary.
John Sensei teaches us about the two types of adjectives within the Japanese language. We learn the difference between the two groups and practice differentiating between them with John Sensei.
We have previously covered the location of action usage of de. Today John Senei teaches us how de can be used as a use marker. We learn how to utilize de as a use marker and how to properly use it in full sentances.
The Japanese particle, no is very versatile and has many uses. John Sensei teaches us how to use it properly and also how useful it can be. No can be used to describe possession, similar to the 's in English. It can also be used to link two related nouns together and also to tell location.
John Sensei goes deeper on the intricacies of the direction particle, ni. He explains how it is extra specific in written form and can help describe a very specific location or a general location depending on how it is used.
John Sensei teaches us about the Japanese particle, mo. John tells us about some do's and don'ts and advises against overusing this particle.
De is used to describe the location of actions. John Sensei teaches us how to use this particle properly and elaborates on how useful it can be. We also learn a couple of new sentences to practice in Japanese.
In this bonus episode for Day 16, John Sensei goes on Instagram to thank all of you listeners supporting this podcast. John reminds us of the different channels he has set up to ask questions about Japanese that isn't covered within this podcast.
John Sensei teaches us about wo, the direct object marker of Japanese. Direct object markers mark the recipient of an action. John also teaches us how to use wo in a sentence and helps us build more complex complete sentences with our knowledge thus far.
(Actually episode 14) In today's episode, John Sensei teaches us about Ni. Ni is the particle that is used to indicate direction in Japanese. He also teaches us some useful sentences with his examples of how to use and conjugate ni properly.
Today we talk about Ka, another particle within Japanese. Ka acts as a question mark in Japanese. The uses change depending on the situation and how polite you are trying to be. John Sensei also gives us some do's and don'ts when using Ka.
Today, John teaches us about two existence verbs iru and eru. One of the general rules of which to use is whether you are talking about a living thing or an inanimate object. John also explains the difference between these verbs and desu.
John Sensei teaches us about the exceptions in the verb rules of Japanese, which are suru and kuru. He talks about how useful they can be and how to properly use them.
In the second part of Japanese conjugation of verbs, John Sensei teaches us about the quadrant. The quadrant helps determine how to conjugate a verb based on past or present tense, and whether it is positive or negative.
John Sensei introduces us to the different conjugations of Japanese verbs. He teaches us his methods of breaking them up into different "bases" to simplify the learning process, and when to use which conjugation.
John Sensei teaches us about godan verbs on day 8 of the 30-day challenge. There are 3 types of Japanese verbs and we have already talked about ichidan verbs in our previous episode. John Sensei goes more in-depth about conjugation and the differences between the types of verbs.
On day 7 of the challenge, we talk about Japanese verbs and more specifically, ichidan verbs. John talks about the 2 other groups of Japanese verbs and teaches us how to differentiate between them.
Today we cover more grammatical particles. These two are very similar so don't worry, it won't be too difficult to learn both in the same day. To and ya both are used as the "and" in a list or group of things. The difference is contextual and important, and John tells us how to know when to use which particle.
On day 5 of the 30-day challenge, we talk about another Japanese Particle, ga. Manga Sensei teaches us more about Japanese grammar and when to use the particle wa or ga.
Desu, a Japanese copula, has a few different uses and pronunciations depending on the formality of the situation. Japanese is a very polite and respectful language, and it is important to know when to use each desu.
On day 3 of the 30-day challenge, we cover the sentence structure of Japanese and how it differs from English. We also talk about the grammatical particle, Wa, and the importance of using it even when implied.
John covers the correct pronunciation and the symbols of Katakana. Katakana is one of the three Japanese writing systems. It is generally used to describe foreign things, such as non-native names, in Japanese.
On Day 1, John gives a lesson on the different writing systems and how they are utilized. He also covers the phonemes of spoken Japanese and provides free resources to help you learn.
John, the show's host introduces himself and describes his passion for sharing Japanese with those who want to learn. John details what you can expect from the Manga Sensei podcast, and shares his experience with Japanese culture.

I have seen so many fluid Japanese learners try to speak Japanese just a little too quickly. This is just one of those things that makes life so much harder. Mostly, because people tend to lose where they are in the conversation or sentence.

While we have talked about Mo and Ba before, I have found an interesting use when they are combined together. So interesting in fact I have dedicated a whole episode to it for your benefit. I hope you find it useful and can see some of the most powerful ways these parts of language can be used.
Connection and adding clauses are tricky when you get to advanced Japanese. Nevertheless, let’s take a crack at it.
I have been asked this question a lot lately and I'm hoping that an understanding of my teaching philosophy will help people take better examples of these episodes. Enjoy.

One of the best things to know about Japanese is that sometimes, alot of the times, less is more. Vagueness and beating around the bush are not only part of Japanese language, but also Japanese culture. This 5 minute bite is a little tidbit of how to use that in your Nihongos
This is a fun and interesting conjunction that is very commonly used. I think this should be alot of help.
This episode is for those ladies studying Japanese. I figured you needed a couple episodes for you lovely vernacular.
Sometimes, All you can do is try to orient yourself and try to speak. You may make mistakes and you may fall on your face. While you may mess up or screw up, what really matters is how you take it. If you are going to take it on the nose, or let it own you.

James is kinda amazing. This may be because he has done it all, or because he knows how to make you talk about anything. Truly a master of his craft. You may know him from the popular ALT Insider or Inside Japan podcast. He is a force to be reckoned with in the Podcast world and my Senpai for sure.
In today's podcast we talk about Mormons, Leaving the ALT fold, how to learn Japanese, hurting yourself in Japanese and a lot more. This may have been one of the most fun podcasts I have done in a long time. I hope you enjoy this far-reaching and wide-ranging podcast with James of Inside Japan.

The second half of the Amari Podcasts. This adjective really screws with people, so I have taken it upon myself to de-mystify this complex adjective. You're welcome.
Amari is a very tricky type of adjective that screws with people all the time. It is like the internet troll of Japanese Grammar because it just flips meanings on you without notice. Which is what today's podcast is going to clear up for you. I hope this makes sense.

Today's amazing adjective is NIKUI, which is used to modify verbs to make it "difficult to verb." This is a great Japanese lesson for beginning/beginner learners. This is also a great episode if you want to say that something is hard to do.

One of the main problems people tend to have when learning a new language is that they often try to translate things in their head. Which often means they will directly translate something. Which is a BAD thing. Don't do that. If you are currently in the bad habit, it is time to stop. Today I use the example of Hai to explain that to you.

If you didn't know this two particles belong together. Like if you ever write a letter or email ever. This is a thing. I hope you enjoy this and follow us on your unique podcast tomorrow.
Today we talk about an important (I use that word way too much) conjunction. This is often translated to as "and then" or "after that." Make sure that you know what situation or otherwise that you will be using it in, because this can get kinda tricky.
Sorry about yesterday my city lost power. I couldn't even check my mail because my phone died. However, I am back today with a podcast about going back to school and learning Japanese.
I thought that it might be good to do a quick overview of all the different ways that the Rareru or passive form can be used.
Cheers,
John
Honorific language is another function of the Rareru form. Make sure that you don't miss this amazing episode and raise your diction a little too. Also make sure to follow me on Instagram @themangasensei
Today we continue to talk about the RARERU or RERU form and how it actually makes Japanese easier. This episode was a lot of fun to record because I had to do it 7 times, so I hope you find it helpful.
Today we continue talking about Passives. This is because people really seem to get hung up on this and I am a super nice and understanding guy. Oh, and I really really struggled with this when I first started learning Japanese. So there is that...
This is today's highly requested podcast is the first of many in a series of important podcasts. As passives tend to be quite difficult we will be talking about them all week long.
If you have any questions, comments or otherwise please follow me @themangasensei on twitter and manga-sensei.com for updates and other fun things.

Every once and a while I like to answer questions about Japanese that I get at my website manga-sensei.com

This long-standing question gets answered today by the world's best-beared grammarian John Sensei. In today's show we also talk about how to use particles, the uses of Ni, lying hiragana and make you day just that much better!
Make mistakes!
So Sorry! I thought my podcasts we uploading and I noticed they weren't! I will upload every missing day now! I hope you like today's episode!
Today we talk about with. Not with and in I had peas with carrots, but I went to the mall with my little sister with. We also talk about why you should get married with someone that to someone.
Cheers,
John Sensei
This is something I keep coming across, so I figured this might be something others might have questions about. Hence this off the wall podcast.
Enjoy
NEVER WILL THERE BE A BETTER EPISODE! Or Never will we talk about never. Never say never. Kesshite (決して) is a conjunction that expresses "never" in a sentence. However, it has to be used in the Negative form. Which we talk all about on today's 5 minute Japanese Lesson!
Naruhodo was the Kuchiguse (口癖) that my old roommate in Japan had. I think learning how to use it, as well as the fluid nature of this word will help you sound alot more fluid.
So... Being a very goal oriented person I figured this might be an odd way to talk about Japanese and language learning, but I figured ya'll would like it. If not, or you have any other questions feel freet o connect with me on Twitter. @themangasensei
This episode is dedicated to my friend Evan, because he loves this word. Hi Shortboob. This week we are talking about words that you may not find in the dictionary, or that are better heard in a spoken context. Also, make sure to check out our comic!

Manga Sensei, teaching people how to ay inappropriate and crude things. That's me.
But really, this lesson is all about learning to conjugate words into expletives. Because that is what a real Sensei does, teach useful stuff.
Shadowing, and other language learning methods are great tools that can give you a leg up. Today I break down how to use this method to improve speaking fluidity.
This episode and grammar point is so people and differentiate between the basic な and なあ. Which, despite their similarity in phonology has very different meanings. Today we also review the concept of area of information and what you shouldn't say.
This is an advanced grammar point. Heads up.
までもない (made mo nai) is an expression used to indicate that the speaker feels that it is not necessary to go as far as doing something, either because it is pointless or inappropriate to do so. It has a meaning that is similar to the English phrase “no need to”, “no need to go as far as” and “don’t bother to”. There is an idiomatic version of tis phrase いうまでもなく (iu mademo naku) that means basically “it goes without saying that…”
な (na) is used when the speaker orders an inferior not to do something. This is very harsh and informal, so it’s inappropriate to use な on someone who deserves respect such as coworkers, parents, bosses, or anyone with similar or higher social positions. な just gets tacked onto the plain form of whatever verb you don’t want someone to do.
Giseigo 擬声語 Animal and human sounds.
Giongo 擬音語 Actual sounds made by inanimate objects and nature.
Gitaigo 擬態語 Describe conditions and states.
Giyougo 擬容語 Describe movements and motions.
Gijougo 擬情語 Describe feelings.
-John
Today is the last day of this installment of the Onomatopoeia series. I hope you have found it helpful. We will be doing this again soon, but until then, I hope this week has helped you improve your fluency and increased your fluidity.
While many onomatopoeia are indeed sound-words like, animal sounds and sound effects, many of these words also have powerful intrinsic meanings. This episode explores that a little bit and also goes into a common example of this: NakaNaka
This episode was really fun to record because Onomatopoeia are extremely interesting and silly. I really enjoyed this podcast and I ope you do too.
-John

Continuing our talk about Japanese onomatopoeia and how they are created and used. Being able to understand the form and function of the individual parts of Japanese phonology and sentence structure will be a great help to all learners, at least that’s what I think.
Tamatama is a Japanese onomatopoeic phrase used to express chance. This week we will be talking quite a bit about the special power of onomatopoeia and their unique function and form in the world's BEST language.

This phrase expresses the situation where something stops happening, or a state ceases to occur anymore. It is important to note that in order to use -なくなる something had to be taking place at some point. This phonetically is also the same phrase that is used to express someone passing away. However、 the Kanji used in this case is slightly different. The usage for that is 亡くなる.

Be honest about your Japanese ability. If listening to the news is so difficult that you are not learning anything from it, then do something that will actually help you. Study what is useful and what is helpful, not what is showy and a lie. You can do this, but studying Japanese in a way that limits your ability will only hurt you in the long run.
Today I talk to my friend and fellow Japanese teaching entrepreneur: Shota Sensei. This dude is a polyglot, language teacher, world traveler and all are genius of a guy. I think this interview will not only help your listening but get you alot to think about. Also, sorry about all my mistakes I may have don this interview on 3 hours of sleep.

Umm... Well... Like... Etc. This works are important if you want to transfer your thoughts and personality to your Japanese. Today we talk about three types:
Well - Jya
Umm - Eto and Nanka
Hey - Annone
After more than 300 episodes I have avoided this word because of the various meanings. Today we are going to keep it simple and talk about Yoroshiku in regards to introducing yourself. Just rememnber to bow.
Raising your diction and improving your ability to be polite to higher member of society is very important in Japanese linguistics and culture. Today’s grammar points reflect that shift.
When introducing yourself in a foreign language it is very easy to become rigid and overly structured when it comes to introducing yourself. Today's podcast is all about making yourself sound more fluent and fluid, and improving your conversational skills.
Self-introductions. The first thing we ever really learn in Japanese, that it becomes something wrote and kinda corny sounding if we are not careful. Which is why John-Sensei takes this opportunity to say his in English and prepare your for tomorrow where we help you sound a lot more natural when introducing yourself in Japanese.

ざるを得ない (zaru wo enai) expresses that even though something is undesirable you have no choice but to do it. ざるを得ない is more of a written or formal style and isn’t commonly used in informal speech. It usually correlates with the English “no choice but to”, “nothing to do but”, “can’t help but ”, and “have to”. The more common informal form is しかない.
[verb BI ざるを得ない]
I try not to brag a whole bunch, but we are really stoked about his new version of our comic. Manga-sensei.com/comic
に違いない (ni chigainai) is a phrase that is derived from the verb 違う (chigau), “to be different” or “to vary.” 違いない is a negative form of 違う that means the opposite, to be “sure,” “unmistaken,” or “certain.” に違いない at the end of the sentence conveys the feeling of the English “certainly,” “definitely,” and “surely.
[verb] やる (yaru) can be considered another way to say する. The main difference is やる is used exclusively for physical action . Another difference is that する can take the word directly in front of it without the を (like 勉強する), but やる always needs the を. やる can pop up in English as just plain old “do”, but also as “play” or even “send”.
One of the other ways やる is used is similar to [ageru] and [kureru] to give. やる is used when someone gives something to someone or allows someone to do something who is below them in social status or rank. Similar to the English “to give” or “to allow”.

にする (ni suru) is used to indicate that something has decided upon something. This can work with nouns and nominalized (words and phrases that have been converted into a noun) phrases. However, it is important to note that this grammar point can only be used when the thing that is being decided upon is under the subject or speaker’s control.
I try to stay off some topics. But in light of this terrible disaster, I had to say something.
I will show you!! angryface Have you ever wanted to show someone that you can really do something? I will show you in this episode exactly how to say that and make your Japanese just that much better. Believe it!

[Phrase]
When you want to say that you or someone else is going to or went somewhere, the simplest way is to say:
Noun (the target location) にいく (ni iku)
The に particle indicates direction, and the verb いく means go.
[noun] 一番 means the ‘number one’ or ‘first place’ of someone or something. This is often used in idiomatic phrases to indicate when someone thinks something is the best.

No f***ing way?! Dude? For real?! Because people want to know how to say some very important and often colorful things, I bring you a little more informal lesson. Usso means lie, but when used in spoken Japanese, it carries a lot more meaning.
Learning Japanese can be confusing. Particularly when it comes to hierarchy and the levels of formality. I often have questions about how this exactly works. Sometimes people get confused and think this is something divisive and fracturing, when it couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Today’s episode is dedicated to something kinda fun. I won’t spoil it, just give it a listen. It is freaking fun and cool.
Manga-sensei.com
何しろ (nani shiro) is used when someone feels very strongly about some unusual or extreme situation. It is different from 本当に because 本当に simply means “really”, without any connotation of something extreme. 何しろ is close to the English expression “believe it or not”, “think what you may”, and “in fact”. Note that this expression is mainly spoken.
Learn more at: Manga-sensei.com
いかにも (Ikanimo), similar to 本当に (hontou ni), is used when you want to express that you really believe what you say. Difference between the two is merely the level of formality… meaning that it is a slightly more polite way to say 本当に. It usually comes in a pair with a statement of conjecture. Meaning that something really seems a certain way, or you really feel a certain way about something.
This is REALLY REALLY important. That is HontoNi is really, like literally really. Really?! Really.

Today's sexy Japanese lesson is all about expressing "through" things. ことによる (koto ni yoru) is used when you want to be specific about what events led up to something else. The よる is the same one that makes によって, so you’ll often see/hear ことによって. In English we express this idea by saying things like “through verbing” or “due to the fact that”.
[N の+こと+に+よる]
[V こと+に+よる]
[Adj. こと+に+よる]

を通して (wo tooshite) shows that something is done through some means, or happens through some time period. On the surface it is quite similar to によって, but there is a subtle difference. によって has a TON of other meanings in addition to the meaning above. So, if you want to be very clear that what you mark is the means, not the indirect agent or something, then you should use を通して. It literally means “passing through ___”, so translates quite directly to the English “through”.

Today's awesome grammar point it やっと (yatto) is used to express that what the subject wanted has “finally” been achieved, or that it was just “barely” possible for the subject to do. This can work in a few ways, for instance: It is hard work to get into college, it is also hard work to wait for summer break. When やっと is used, the speaker or subject has a degree of ownership over the action that has been achieved, there is a certain level of work/struggle to recognize a result. In English, it usually shows up as “finally” or “barely”. The phrase used in example sentence 3 is somewhat of an idiomatic usage that means “after all I could do” or “at long last”.

Today we are talking about a 'fun' yet sad words called Toutou. とうとう (toutou) Something that the speaker or subject has been expecting “finally” happened. It might sound similar to やっと, but it doesn’t carry the positive connotation of the thing being desirable. Quite the opposite, frequently the thing that happens in a とうとう sentence is something undesirable that one has no control over. However, if the thing was something in your control than it expresses a sense of satisfaction over the process, somewhat similarly to やっと.

John Sensei goes off on a little bit of a rant. Not kidding, it may be a little harsh, but then again he is really passionate about this topic. So hope this doesn't get you too wound up, but we hope you enjoy this... candid diatribe.
While this week we have been talking about greetings I have had alot of people requesting that I teach a little bit of colloquial slang, and though I am no native of Japanese, I am a grammarian and will grant your wish. With that in mind these slang words work around the greetings theme and I find quite fun to use. Enjoy.
Did you know your greetings change when you come home or leave your house? Well... have we got a fun episode for you then. Check it out! (Also the site will be up again soon. Don’t worry)

We continue our visiting and greeting grammar. This is a really fun and heartwarming episode that will hopefully make you Japanese better and help you sound a little bit more friendly and respectful when visiting someone's house in Japan. We talk a bit about comings and goings and how to enter and exit; plus a little bit of Japanese culture.
Much like yesterday, we are talking about how to make Japanese more fluent even though it is very simple. Saying "Goodbye" in Japanese can be alot more tricky than you may initially think. We combat some of those little confusing things and make your Japanese just that much better.
People tend to get confused about how to actually say hello in Japanese. They often confused how you spell Konnichiwa and Konbanwa, not to mention the pronunciation of alot of these people are dreadful. You only need to look as far as weeaboo cringe compilations to see what I am talking about. This episode is to put all of that to rest and make you "hellos" better.
Are there ways to think about learning a language? There are more than one way to attack a language, and many ways to think about one. This META episode is kinda fun in the it get yo thinking and hopefully helps your brain grow a bit.
Today we interview the guy who you here at the beginning and end of each episode. You're boy, Gizmo. The Man from Kuro Kouch. This dude is awesome and we are so happy to be part of his official launch. I hope you enjoy this AMAZING interview and check out his CD: Tokyo Ronin.

This is not 物 or 者. This is a Hiragana Mono and is used to describe an action or a state of something. This must be followed a predicate and modifying a verb or an adjective.
Check out more at our website at manga-sensei.com
While mostly written in hiragana, this advanced grammar point is about explaining how and what something is predicated upon or under. This is a more advanced grammar point but there should be no worries in intermediate speakers picking this up if they understand grammar points like No Tame Ni etc.

Today we jump back to particles. Particularly the use of the question particle 'ka' or か.

Another Combination when using と+ 言う + Baseた + ら Combining all these different grammar points together. The great thing about this structure is that is you are beginning to understand how this construction works, that you are starting to grasp fluency and real Japanese sentence structure.
For more information visit our site: manga-sensei.com
In this episode we combine the particle compound of with the grammar point we learned at the end of last week. と言う + のは.
The nice thing about this is that as long as you understand these two points they follow extremely logically.
のは expresses an opinion or an explanation of a state or condition.
While と言う gives reference to something or calls something something else.
If this is confusing for you make sure to go back and listen to those previous episodes.

のは (no wa) nominalizes (makes a word or phrase into a noun). The following part of the sentence following のは makes comments on the state or condition, or expresses what the nominalized phrase is.
には and a compound of particles that indicate the purpose for which something will/was done.
This combination of に and は are interesting because に indicated the direction of action or purpose. While は marks the topic.

Noni or na (the particle) Noni is used to indicate that in spite or regardless of whatever is happening there is a result. This result can be positive or negative.
The な is used after な Adjectives and Noun (also sometimes in colloquial speak as well).
Base て + the particle も implies an 'even though' modification to the verb that it modifies. John Sensei breaks it down for ya.

しか, written in hiragana is not Deer (鹿) and is similar to the だけ and ばかり, しか is a limiter. Like the previous grammar patterns is used right after the noun that it is showing the exception of, but しか can only be used in a negative sentence.

One thing to remember is to make sure that you are not confusing the English meaning of 'doing nothing but -verb-' which implied that you are free. While you can imply that meaning, it doesn't necessarily denote such a meaning in the Japanese.

Bakari goes right after nouns without any particles attached and meaning 'nothing but' and can be used in positive and negative situations.

Dake dewa naku is a combination of a few different grammar points stacked on top of each other. The first is Dake, which we talked about yesterday. The second is De the particle & Wa the topic marker. Last is the negative 'Nai' turned into an adverb. These three grammar points stacked together have quite a specific meaning but let's break it down in this podcast.
Dake is one of the few words that can be translated almost directly into English; meaning 'only.' used directly after a noun this grammar point can be used for positive and negative sentences.

まで is a simple grammar point that we seem to have neglected when talking about measurement and limits these past couple of weeks. まで is essentially the most simple limit meaning 'until' both spatially and chronologically.
The Kanji 全 means all, and depending on if it is a noun (全て subete) or the adverb mattaku can be somewhat confusing in how it is used. In this episode, we break it down a little bit and distinguish how it is used in a sentence. Both Negative and Positive.
Manga Sensei
Nami (ni) is somewhat tricky and has two distinct meanings.
An easy way to differentiate between the two by seeing if 並み is connected to a noun by a particle or not.
If not: That it means to match, or be equal/equivalent to whatever it is connected to.
If so: (meaning it is being connected with a particle etc.) Than is indicates something in general or normally.
Tan-i de is an underused way to show measurement, particularly the smallest measurement that can be used.
Remember this word can only be used after a counter word.
if you have any questions please make sure to send them to us at: manga-sensei.com/info
Filler words are words that you use in between words, that don't hold any intrinsic meaning. Words like: 'like', 'umm', and 'well...' are good examples. Today John-Sensei talks about how to make your Japanese sound more fluent that you really are in using these type of words.
Today's interview ran a little long. But trust me it is well worth it.

Atari is a grammar point that is used following a counter to indicate rate. This is often translated to mean 'per' or 'each'. This is used very often to measure things and you will use it a lot if you have even a minor sushi addiction.
Make sure that you use あたり/当たり only after a counter like: 日, 札, and 枚.

Zutsu is used to evenly distribute 'somethings'. Remember Zutsu has to be used after a quantifier, like a counter or time.
Oki ni and Goto ni are often confused, this episode is to clear up some of that confusion.
Remember: Oki Ni when compared to Goto Ni indicate period is complete. So if it is:
三日おきに = Every forth day.

より can not only be used in comparison, but also to indicate a point in time or space.

Yori is used to indicate something that is being compared to. (You might have heard this in the previous episode ほう)
Sometimes Yori will be followed by も. Don't worry about this, it doesn't change the meaning at all.
MORE!!! MOOORE!!! Learn More Japanese. ほう is a noun that indicates what is MORE. usually connected another noun with the particle の and often followed by the subject particle が.
Remember that the last word, usually a verb or an adjective is what ほう is describing, so make sure you keep that in mind when you are using it.

This episode is a little bit different. The episode was recorded one time, with no editing and not in the studio. In this episode, John-Sensei goes off on how Japanese is taught at the university and in textbooks. We decided to put it up unedited because we feel like it speaks to the state of how Japanese is being taught.
We at Manga Sensei feel the same way. We are sick and tired of how Japanese is being taught and are 100% dedicated to bringing Japanese out of the stone age in regards to teaching. Which was the whole reason we started Manga Sensei in the first place; to fight back against the man and teach Japanese in a way that anyone can learn it. By not only allowing them to make mistakes, but encouraging them to do so.
WARNING: John Sensei gets very passionate in this episode.

Today we go crazy and throw two grammar points together. B4 Ba (if) and B3 Hodo (the extent that) to mean 'the more you X the more you will Y.' This is a super fun grammar point that will blow your mind. Or at least make it just that more Japaneseified.
The more you study Japanese the more you will want to hear from us, which is why we have a weekly newsletter, manga-sensei.com
To the extent that you listen to this podcast, you will gain magical powers. Okay, while that may not be true, the grammar point 'Hodo' is used after Verbs (most commonly できる) or Nouns to show the extent.
This is really fun grammar point that can help you articulate just how much of something someone can do.
*Remember that when using it to compare to someone, you use the negative tense at the end of the sentence to be polite; and that your verbs are in Base 3. If you don't know what any of that means that's why we have a website: manga-sensei.com

末(に)indicates the end of an arduous period of time. The main nuance between this end/after is the hard word and effort that does into the thing that is being modified by the 末(に).
The に can be omitted leaving the same meaning. However, the 末に together indicate an exact time, while 末 also indicates the end of the period.

Japanese is often confused for being a tonal language, when in all actuality, Japanese is a tone-less language. Japanese requires no tones and uses particles to articulate some feelings like exclamation and the need for affirmation.
These two sentence ending particles give the following feelings:
よ: Exclamation
ね: Need for hearer's confirmation.

Particles:と & や
Unlike most particlesと and や can be used between particles to mean ‘and’.
と: is a very specific and meaning ONLY: A and B. This is also the most common ‘and’ particle. However, this is an exhaustive list. For example, if you say Aと B it is only A and B, nothing else.
や: is an inexhaustive and. Meaning, that you can say Xや Y and there could also be Z but you are omitting it. An example of this would be saying you like Sushiや Chicken Katsu, but you also like Takoyaki but neglect mentioning because the list of your favorite foods would be too long.
