We are traveling through life addicted to anxiety or prone to paralysis. Eventually, these ways of coping fail us and those around us. So, how can we come to see our breakdowns as opportunities for our breakthroughs? It begins with taking the journey towards self-awareness. This new Know Thyself series is your step-by-step guide to discover how to pause, observe, and pivot so that you can respond to life’s curveballs with intention instead of reacting with anxiety or paralysis. I will share with you all the tools, tests, and people who have helped me along my own journey. You will walk away with the ability to step out of your own experience, observe your feelings, and, with compassionate curiosity, choose how to respond instead of react. Sound like freedom? Let’s go!
Bob Goff, author of the breakaway bestseller Love Does, is an encourager, a teacher, a ”recovering lawyer,” and the Hon. Consul to Uganda. After practicing law for 25 years (he declared that he was the only lawyer that wore a Mickey Mouse watch), he gave up his law firm to pursue writing and speaking full time. Along the way he has connected with others who are on their own adventures, and is driven to help others unlock their potential to love and be loved greater. Bob isn’t interested in agendas, he’s interested in getting past them and being super real. Feeling stuck? Be inspired by Bob to get “unstuck” and find power in being present and available to life and to those around you.
From a very early age, Tiffany Aliche understood the value of a dollar (and a power bill). But like so many of us, she made some financial missteps that led her to reexamine her own views of money, and how she manages it. Today, Tiffany, aka “The Budgetnista,” inspires others to manage their money in a way that helps them reach their goals and turn their dreams into reality.
Today, Jessica and Tiffany have an incredibly helpful and practical conversation about spending, saving, and taking control of your financial life!
Amy Moffett Brown is the bubbly co-host of the wildly popular Bobby Bones Radio Show that airs out of Nashville, Tennessee. At first blush, Amy looks like she has it all--fun job, happy family, partner in successful non-profits. Amy’s wins in life came from broken places that she turned into good--from her Mom’s difficult battle with cancer, to her burden for the impoverished people of Haiti. Jessica and Amy talk about the bravery it takes to actually make lemonade from lemons when your heart is broken, and how simply “asking” in regards to opportunity is a risk we all need to take more often.
Emily P. Freeman is a writer, creative director, and spiritual mentor who helps create space for the soul to breathe so people can walk in step with their calling. Today, Emily brings her unique brand of steady, thoughtful, reflective wisdom to Going Scared.
Sit back and savor Emily and Jessica’s conversation as they discuss how all of us can create space in our lives, gain some perspective, and become empowered to do the next right thing.

The myth of momentum and success can be crippling. In this conversation with Mary and Jessica, we uncover the realizations that success is not what we're called to and we can actually go a lot further when we plan rest into the journey. At some point, you have to surrender that myth of success and learn to redefine it. We only move into significance when we turn that filter outward and concede the old stories we've told about ourselves.
771 million human beings living on planet Earth right now are drinking dirty water. So about one in ten people alive will drink contaminated, unsafe water today or tomorrow. Today's guest, Scott Harrison, the founder and CEO of Charity Water, provides insight on the realities and accessibility of clean water around the world and the impacts the lack of it has on our health and education. Interestingly enough, when addressing the myths, it’s more of a solvable problem than you may think.
We carry around so many myths about trust, and trust is the foundation of all of our relationships. We need to learn how to build trusting relationships with others, and you're going to get to know every single thing you need to know about trust in today's episode. Dr. Charles and Jessica walk through the four domains of trust:care, sincerity, reliability and competence and how this framework can shape and bring the deepest satisfaction to our relationships
At the end of the day, our nutrition habits matter. It is easy to fall into the trap and become largely influenced by factors that don’t really matter in the grand scheme of our personal health journey. In the first episode of our Myth Busting series, Dr. Adrian and Jessica challenge several myths in nutrition like, Is sugar addictive? Are there misconceptions behind Keto? The truth behind supplements, and how much we should ideally eat.

We face a lot of internal hurdles through the processes and personalities we encounter in our work. The ups and downs (the delicate dance) can lead us to a greater understanding of ourselves, our teams, and our own spheres of leadership. In the final part of this series, we open the topic of work and how each enneagram type thrives in and navigates the workplace.
Whether you create a full scheduled day by day itinerary, show up and go with the flow, or spontaneously book an adventure for the weekend, we all prepare uniquely. In this part two episode, we discuss how each enneagram approaches travel and operates under and around the term, “vacation.”
Summertime creates more space for many of us and that causes reflection. This summer we are doing a 3-part series on the enneagram that features 9 people (yes, you heard that right!) who all represent a different enneagram type. Each person was incredibly vulnerable and there is a lot to learn about yourself and how to be flexible and adaptable with those in your life. In this episode, we overview each type, how they think and function, and their key identifiers.

Does spending hours on your phone and laptop leave you feeling energized…or drained? For many of us it’s the latter, partially because technology is a force that’s constantly trying to give us abundance without any form of dependence. Today’s guest, author and tech expert Andy Crouch, wants us to acknowledge the deep role that both relationships and recognition play in our human psyche, and how technology can threaten this relationship if we’re not mindful of our habits surrounding it.
Are you guilty of saying “Just one drink…” and then having three more? This weeks’ guest, author, therapist, and “Retired Party Girl”, Amanda E. White, reminds us that alcohol is an addictive substance...even if we’re not addicted to it! There’s no call to cut it out completely, but instead we need to change our perceptions around alcohol in society and our own lives.
Does thinking about finances make you want to run the other direction? Because, ME TOO. Today’s guest, author and personal finance advisor, Erin Skye Kelly, reframes the idea of money by explaining it’s really about the behavior behind our spending habits, not calculations and graphs. If we’re going to flourish financially, we need to learn how to make reviewing finances a habit.

We’re reminded by New York Times Bestselling author and Jessica’s dear friend, Jennie Allen, that the habit of friendship is deeply ingrained in us as humans. If we don’t have others to live and love with, then we can’t claim to have much at all. But, like all habits, it takes work and sacrifice. Jennie will shed light this week on the true beauty of friendship and help us understand why this delicate habit is tied to so many other practices that don’t always come naturally.

Goals don’t matter if we don’t build in the habits to get us there. Let’s learn together how to build courageous habits into our lives so we can live beyond our fears and keep going scared.

Do you take charge and make snap decisions or do you pause and weigh your options carefully? Are you able to stop and consider your emotions before expressing them? Are you unsure what you do? Tune into today’s show where leadership consultant Stacey Harris walks us through the DISC and EQ assessments. Both of these assessments give us a baseline understanding of how we make decisions, process emotions, and relate to others. Stacey will help us understand a crucial fact - if we don’t have a solid base of self-awareness, our emotional intelligence can never truly develop, and our relationships will suffer for it!

Any parent who wants their children to flourish would love an instruction manual. In this 5th episode of our Know Thyself series, Jessica is joined by Dr. Dan Siegel, the founder of interpersonal neurobiology, who provides us with something far more important than a parental playbook. As it turns out, the best predictor of a child’s ability to flourish as an adult is not what happened to his parents as children, but rather how his/her parents made sense of those childhood experiences. Today Dr. Siegel explains how developing "Mindsight" - his own coined term - and making sense of our own story is key to becoming parents that will have a positive lasting impact on our children.

The amount of paths you can take to self awareness can be daunting, which is why it's great to have a guide as you take the first steps. Today's guest, Rich Villodas, is passionate about this journey - he's an expert in emotional intelligence and the tricky process of examining our perceptions and how family of origin scripts can influence our thought patterns, both positive and negative. Author of The Deeply Formed Life, Rich will explain how we can harness a tool called the genogram to identify the stories we tell ourselves about our family of origin, and how scripture tells us that deep self reflection is a critical step to our goal of spiritual wholeness.

Or, do you go to your pantry, grab your guilty pleasure snack, and watch Netflix until you drift asleep? If you’re like most of us, the words “body confidence” might, at times, feel like a distant idea instead of a reality. Maybe you keep finding things about your body to “fix,” or you’re just a bit self-conscious about stepping out of the Zoom window and into a swimsuit this summer. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and this episode is for you as we welcome Jess Connolly, author of the brand-new book Breaking Free from Body Shame.
Today, Jess and Jessica talk very personally and candidly about body awareness, shame, and the many messages that the world (and our minds) give us about what beauty is–and how we can decide to work toward body respect after the pandemic.

As life transitions to a post—pandemic “new normal,” how will you choose to show up in the world? It’s a question we’re pondering as we kick off a new series called Decide, Don’t Slide: Living Intentionally as Life Begins to Normalize. To start off, Jessica spends time with Ashley Stahl as they dive into how we can use this time to discover and pursue work that is meant for us.
Ashley is a counterterrorism professional turned career coach, spokesperson, and author of the best-selling book, You Turn: Get Unstuck, Discover Your Direction, Design Your Dream Career. She and Jessica share how their own career journeys have been more like a rewarding string of experiments instead of straight paths. Most of all, they discuss how we can all be radically honest with ourselves and true to our core skill sets–and why that might be just the shift we need.

Jennifer Pharr Davis knows a thing or two about endurance. Jennifer is a wife, mom of two, author, entrepreneur, and a record-setting long-distance hiker. In 2011, Jennifer set the record for the fastest completed hike on the Appalachian Trail, finishing the 2181-mile trail in 57 days, hiking nearly 50 miles a day. Jennifer stopped by to tell us about her new book The Pursuit of Endurance, the many parallels between entrepreneurship and life on the trails, the huge difference between stopping and quitting.
We’ve all faced a huge Going Scared moment: job searching. Résumés, cover letters, interviews, networking—it’s draining at best, and gut-wrenching at worst. There are dozens of nuances to navigate in our ever-changing job market, and it’s hard to know how to prioritize our tasks. That why we’re thrilled to have career-building expert Alexandra Cavoulacos on today’s episode.
Alex is the co-founder and president of The Muse, a platform used by over 50 million people a year to find a job, learn professional skills, or advance their careers. She is the co-author of The Wall Street Journal bestselling book The New Rules of Work: The Modern Playbook for Navigating Your Career.
Today’s conversation with Alex is chockfull of job search tips, like how to determine your career values, deciphering if a company is right for you, the best way to get your name in front of the right people, and why you should always have questions for your interviewer.
Why aren’t you making money from doing what you love? What’s stopping you? According to certified business coach and Ramsey personality Christy Wright, it’s you. To create a successful, satisfying career, you have to write your own permission slip. And today’s episode will help you reach for pen and paper and start writing.
Christy has a passion to empower women to become accomplished business owners. She is the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Business Boutique, and she created her online academy and podcast to connect women with an online community that can offer tools and advice to burgeoning business owners.
In this conversation, Christy shares tips on how to find balance between work and life, how to be fully present wherever you are, and why sometimes you need to say yes, even when you don’t know the next step forward.
What does leadership mean? For today’s guest, leadership means to be intentional with influence and help others rise together. Author and leadership coach Jo Saxton has helped thousands of women put aside their fears and embrace becoming the leaders they were meant to be. On this episode, Jo reveals her own journey from cocoon to butterfly that she documented in her new book, The Dream of You: Let Go of Broken Identities and Live the Life You Are Made For, how she grew up a Nigerian child raised by a white foster mother in London and discovered the power of her own voice. We also discuss why it’s vital that women seek community with others who are alike to—and different from—them, and how we can flex the muscle of facing our fears and change the periods in our lives into commas.
Ever wonder if you have what it takes to be a good leader? Fred Kofman is here this week to tell us his thoughts on how to be “awake” to your own potential as a leader. Fred is the newly appointed advisor for leadership development at Google and was formerly the vice president of executive development at LinkedIn. His life passion now is to help people become transcendent leaders. Fred believes that leadership cannot be bought. and that it requires you getting in touch with ourselves, finding our life mission, committing to our values (and the courage to stand for those). He gives practical and helpful insight as to how to look within ourselves to discover our mission and purpose, and true life examples of how to put conscious leadership into practice.
When Holly Thaggard’s friend was diagnosed with skin cancer in her early 30s, Holly set out to learn everything she could about sunscreen, skin damage, and skin care. A former schoolteacher and professional harpist, Holly’s journey to entrepreneurism has been fueled by her passion to “change the way the world thinks about sunscreen.” Holly launched the successful and innovative sunscreen brand, Supergoop!, in 2007.
Full of triumphs and failures, of dead ends and redirected paths, Holly’s story is courageous and inspired. It’s especially encouraging for anyone who sees a problem and has an idea to make difference.
Why is it that we’re so often able to show wells of compassion for other people, but can rarely find it for ourselves? In today’s episode, Dr. Kristin Neff will help us answer this question. Kristin is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on self-compassion, being the first one to operationally define and measure the construct over a decade ago. She is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and examines why we take this less-than-kind approach with ourselves, and how we basically respond with a “fight or flight” approach to ourselves--thinking that we can “whip ourselves into shape.” Kristin shows us that we really don’t have to beat ourselves up to change, and she outlines the steps to developing self-compassion. She encourages us that when we show the same kindness, support and encouragement to ourselves that we show others, we will radically change our lives.
Alison Faulkner is a writer, speaker, and “self-proclaimed nonsense dancer,” who knows all about “walking in the messy middle.” She has worked with Fortune 500 companies and has been creating content for over 10 years. She built a business on throwing 900 person female dance parties, and found that the behind the hoopla, she was crashing and burning. When she couldn’t figure out how to scale the business and preserve her sanity, she took a step back and started doing the things she wanted to do. Thus, The Alison Show was born, as well as Alison’s podcast Awesome with Alison and Allison’s Brand School. Now, she’s not ashamed to share the times “she break downs and cries under her desk, the times she fails, the times she wants to quit.” Even after a recent car accident, Alison has been pushing through the pain to embrace possibility. Alison’s mantra is: Only you can be you, and you’re already as awesome as you need to be.
Our guests this week epitomize the heart of friendship, determination and courage. Patrick Gray & Justin Skeesuck have been friends, literally, since birth, having been born in the same hospital merely 36 hours apart. When Justin was diagnosed in his early 20’s with a degenerative muscular disease, although they no longer lived in the same city, Patrick was at the ready to support and help as he could. Their mantra for their friendship centers around intentionality, and if the other person has a need, desire or dream, they are there for each other to support and facilitate it. When Justin, now wheelchair bound, voiced his desire to make a trek across Spain through the Camino de Santiago, Patrick didn’t hesitate to show up and see how they could make this dream a reality together. They share the details of this incredible journey (the inspiration for their book “I’ll Push You”) and how they look at “fear as an opportunity,” while following their hearts in friendship, instead of letting logistics get in the way.
Jeremy Cowart is an award winning photographer, artist and entrepreneur, having been named “Most Influential Photographer on the Internet” by Huffington Post, Forbes and Yahoo in 2014. Jeremy’s mission in life is to "explore the intersection of creativity and empathy." He has published four books and is a sought-after speaker, having presented at TEDx, the United Nations and creative conferences across the country. He shares about an idea that was so big, he wasn’t sure he was supposed to pursue it, and then how, at every turn, the idea kept coming back to him; along with clear signs and the means to make it happen. If you’ve ever pivoted from what you thought you were called to in order to do something completely different, you’ll love hearing what Jeremy has to say about the “normality” of insecurity and doubt, and moving forward despite of it.
This week’s conversation features Jessica chatting with her friend Rachel Hollis, the founder of Chic Media, whose most recent book, Girl Wash Your Face, has been a blockbuster best-seller. Rachel gives insight into what it takes to build a business, and the time she’s had to move, shift, and change to accomm odate new directions and initiattives. Rachel and Jessica share their perspectives on “going all in” even when there’s a chance you might fall on your face. They reiterate the value of having a key group of close friends/confidantes, the power of a supportive “tribe,” and the satisfaction of building community that lifts each other up during all of our wins and losses.
Jessica Kim started her first business in college, where she made baked goods in her dorm room. When a professor there told her she was “onto something,” Jessica hit the ground running. Having just one person believe in her was the spark she needed to turn this side venture into a full-fledged business. After growing “Jessica’s Wonders” into a major company that was distributed in nearly 500 stores, Jessica sold the company and kept forging her entrepreneurial path. She shares how she went on to start two other successful businesses and shows how she was able to take a great idea and create businesses through various startup tactics. For anyone who is looking to turn their vision into a reality, she gives us five practical and accessible ways to raise money to finance your dream, and how the power of believing in yourself and aligning yourself with others who share your vision is key to a satisfying and successful business.
Mary Marantz is an author, a speaker and a top photographer. She and her husband were named one of the top 15 wedding photographers in the world, according to Profoto. They have also been featured in publications including Martha Stewart, Style Me Pretty, and more. Mary shares her story of grit and figuring out where she belonged. Growing up from humble means in a West Virginia coal mining country, she eventually ended up at Yale Law School. As she navigated this unknown terrain, walking alongside others who seemed sure of their paths toward law and education, Mary felt that she was made for something different. Despite offers right out of college for law jobs that paid 6 figures, Mary decided to “leap and believed the net would appear.” That leap eventually led to the highly successful photography business she and her husband run today. Mary’s conversation with Jessica about their respective “going scared” moments will challenge us all to question the stories we may tell ourselves that keep us from pursuing our dreams.
Michelle McKinney defines herself as a "Dream Architect." She has dedicated her life to helping women design construct, and bring their dreams to life, building off her own experiences with insecurities and doubts and moving to confidence and assuredness of her calling. She encourages us to “not settle for the known,” but to be bold in our moves toward the “right things” for our lives—ready to embrace failures and learn from them.
Bob Goff, author of the breakaway bestseller Love Does, is an encourager, a teacher, a ”recovering lawyer,” and the Hon. Consul to Uganda. After practicing law for 25 years (he declared that he was the only lawyer that wore a Micky Mouse watch) he gave up his law firm to pursue writing and speaking full time. His new book is Everybody Always.
Happy International Women’s Day! To celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women, we invited Roopa Mehta to join us on this special bonus episode of the Going Scared Podcast. Roopa is the CEO of Sasha, an organization that creates meaningful opportunities for artisan groups in rural areas throughout all of India. She and a group of activists came together because of a deep love for their craft and textile traditions. They understand how vulnerable their communities are and were, and that they required intervention. They devised a plan to get market success, development opportunities and gave artisans the tools to be able to run their own businesses; for themselves, their families, their communities, and for the future of their children. Her story will inspire you as we celebrate her accomplishments, today, along with so many women who have made incredible strides to make the world a better place, on International Women’s Day.
Emily Ley is a wife, mom and entrepreneur. After quitting her stressful corporate job in hopes of starting her own business, Emily found that she had worked herself into even more stress. After conceiving and creating the wildly popular, success came and the demands for her time pressed in even harder. Emily shares how she chose to simplify--using the tenets she had preached to others about paring back and living for what matters most--in her own life. She and Jessica talk about what it looks like when we’re more deliberate with how we spend our time, and the dreaded “no,” word that each of them had to embrace in a new way in order to claim margin in their lives.
A wise person once said; “There are four words that can often mean the difference between the fear of failure and the courage to try - I BELIEVE IN YOU.” Jenny McGee, of the Starfish Project, takes that message to the women she serves in East Asia who are exploited and trafficked; and empowers them to begin new lives. Daily, she goes into the brothels of the city and offers an alternative for women who have either been forced into trafficking, or felt like they had no other options. Through education, counseling, and economic solutions, the Starfish Project is transforming lives and restoring hope to exploited women. Jenny also shares what it’s like to say “‘yes,’ without knowing the rest,” in answering the call to help women in the most desperate of situations, and how she finds her resolve through strong mentors and the support of her family.
This episode finds Jessica talking with her good friend Jen Hatmaker. Jen is a speaker and author, whose latest book “Of Mess & Moxie,” debuted at #2 on the New York Times Bestseller List. Jessica and Jen both have platforms where they encourage women to live out their dreams and lift each other up in the process. They discuss why it is so vital that we cheer each other on and how there’s plenty of space for us all to succeed. They also discuss the courage it takes to live outside your own “echo chambers,” and that taking the first steps toward your purpose may be hard, but “they are the ones that will lead you all the way home.”
This episode finds Jessica visiting with Mica May, the CEO of May Designs, which specializes in custom stationery, notebooks, gift items, clothing and more. Mica shares how she got her start as a “solo-preneur,” and how she moved to a team environment as an entrepreneur. For those of you who may be feeling like you have to “go it alone,” whether you’re starting a new project, business or just a change in life circumstances, Jessica and Mica lay out the benefits of looking to others for support and encouragement for all the things we’re chasing.
We kick off our very first episode of The Going Scared Podcast with a guest that perfectly defines what it means to “Go Scared.” Jalia Matovu is a Ugandan artisan and entrepreneur who started her business seven years ago. Despite tough times, financial hardships and discouragement, she persevered and providentially, she crossed paths with Jessica, who herself was taking a huge risk starting her own business. The two women discuss the courage, faith and fortitude it took for them to believe in their dreams and to trust and depend on each other as they stepped into the unknown; and how they now consider each other “sisters” on a mission to change the world.
Longing to be more efficient with your time AND make meaningful time for yourself, and for those you love? Today’s guest is on a mission to retrieve our minds from distraction, and to help us restore true connection in our workplaces and in our relationships. Curt Steinhorst is the CEO of Focuswise, a company whose goal is to equip people and organizations to overcome the challenges of our constantly technologically connected lives and workplaces. Curt unpacks all the issues we have with technology, including the expectations to always be “on,” battling the feeling that we’re not doing enough, and addiction to “escaping” through our phones. He lays out steps to help us reclaim what really matters, and encourages us to put technology in its place to enhance our lives; not rule it.
