I am your host Dr Doug Cary Clinical Director of AAP Education, the company that provides F2F continuing education to aspiring health professionals and online courses like Strive & Thrive in Private Practice and the Sleep Mastery course. Physio+10 puts you in contact with just such people and their stories. *** Absorb their experiences, knowledge and insights. You can look into your future, by understanding their past!
Barry's Dad was a scholar, his Mum a machinist, both parents were immigrants and he was a confessed computer geek and introvert, so communicating the nuances of pain as a Physio was going to be an uphill battle. And it was.

At 10 years of age, Jason had his first 'God' moment while watching Saturday morning cartoons, and this moment has guided his decisions ever since.
Jason was a reluctant practice owner promising his wife would never own a practice. Yet he grew his garage-based business to 140 locations and kicked the anthill called franchising. He only left his garage when his wife suggested the driveway wasn't the most professional of waiting rooms. His business, Back in Motion eventually sold for around $100 million.
For $200 Jason recommends the following books;

Biography
Jason is a dynamic businessman and award-winning leadership expert in high demand. Failed medical missionary, reluctant businessman, unqualified franchisor, all leading to accidental founder and CEO of Australia's largest physiotherapy network at the time, the Back In Motion Health Group, creating an unlikely success that surprises him even more than those around him.
Ernst Young entrepreneur-of-the-year, Jason believes the opportunity of a lifetime comes around about once a day. He made a career out of getting it wrong more than he got it right - but knowing when he did get it right, how to repeat it over and again. More street-smart than book-smart, he never wanted a business, and yet ended up with over 140 of them supported by a team of 700+ and eventually selling for over $100m. He started six brands over 20 years and closed or sold five of them.
Initially, a leader by chance, Jason has now mentored over 1,000 others like him through the Iceberg Leadership Institute. A regular contributor on business, leadership, and health-related topics, you can hear his thoughts on podcasts, television, radio, and online channels. Whilst he has written a few internationally-acclaimed books, he prefers to read those of others.
Having presented to over 60,000 people internationally, Jason feels there is more at stake in small intimate groups where he can't hide the whites of his eyes from the very same he is engaging. Director on many boards, chairman of a few. Socially conservative; economically liberal, compassionately capitalistic, and politically disillusioned. Giving time and resources to numerous social initiatives to empower the poorest of the world's poor, his future is now in missional philanthropy.

On balance, Jonathan wasn't meant to be a Physiotherapist. More likely an auto mechanic (family trend), professional drummer (first 10 years of work), scuba diving instructor or water sports co-ordinator (next 10 years of work). Yet he found himself at a tipping point in his early 30's. Offered an exclusive, highly paid all-inclusive job as a dive master on a liveaboard boat based in idyllic Seychelles OR stay in wet and cold England, scrimping and living in nursing quarters while studying hard for several years and maybe having a job at the end of it.
We talk about life before and after this pivotal decision, touching on subjects;

Firstly, Adnan grew up in KL Malaysia where his parents owned a sports store, and afternoons after school were spent 'testing' all the sports gear. Adnan has sped through an undergraduate degree, 3 Master's qualifications and co-owns two clinics with 25+ staff. He has also been heavily involved in committees, boards and elite sports for a decade.

Michael comes from a strong medical pedigree, and with his high level of sports participation and associated injuries, developed an early awareness of Physiotherapy, and specifically sports. These were the very early days of sports physiotherapy, there were no post-graduate courses, Cybex had just arrived and mentors were critical.
After a short period working in a dedicated sports clinic in Adelaide, a new opportunity arose in Melbourne as a clinician and investor in a sports clinic. This pattern repeats several times in Michael's life. Meet someone, be offered a new opportunity, and take it on. Repeat. From clinician to investor, to business manager, owner of single to multiple clinics and then into Stem Cell Therapy and writing a book.
Michael's journey has touched on so many of the possible realms in which a Physiotherapist can move. He shares his thoughts on;

Jon's passion for helping people has been a common thread. As a clinician providing F2F care, as a researcher ensuring he is providing evidence-informed care, as an educator by spreading this knowledge and as a company director gather similar-minded clinicians, collaborating across disciplines and raising money to fund clinically focused research. Plus, he spends 6 months knee-deep in seawater, coaching juniors in surf life-saving.
In our conversation, Jon shares a common pathway; graduation, hospital rotations, overseas work/travel, and returning to Australia to get serious. But he was ahead of the curve and with a chronic pain referral base, a room and several thousand articles, he developed in isolation, a model of management in the early 1990s for this group of patients. This approach was to arrive later on the Physio treatment horizon and was called the bio-psycho-social model.
Throughout his clinical and research careers, Jon has sought to further his understanding of pain management through self-education (completed Master's, PhD and Specialisation) and collaboration (Managing Director of Advance Healthcare with 60 doctors, physios and psychologists on staff).

Libby and I shared undergraduate and later on post-graduate training together. I have always admired her tenacity and conviction to go her own way. In our conversation, Libby described how a range of strategic decisions she made through her career, have now culminated in financial independence so that in her 50s (another strategic goal) she can do the things she wants to do.
As we come to the end of our conversation, we look back and realise that the early decision of having to choose between a career in health, economics or architecture, was not necessary and that with time all three have inadvertently been achieved.

Following a prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, and after experiencing depression, incontinence and other side effects, sports physiotherapist Peter placed an ad in the newspaper, inviting fellow patients to meet. This is just one example of how Peter pioneered a new field of Physiotherapy.
Peter's commitment to helping men share experiences and seek support has helped create a culture change in the treatment management for men with prostate cancer. Receiving a grant to research incontinence – a common consequence in men after prostate cancer treatment – he designed a successful program to treat the condition and published a book used across Australian prostate cancer support groups. He also developed a nationally and internationally recognised program for managing patients with pelvic pain.
Peter highlights the most important thing for him right at the end of our interview and leaves us with a song. Truly a unique gentleman.

Anna-Louise had 2 passions in addition to becoming a Physio. Following graduation, she realised bench warming wasn't for her (short-term patch-up), and neither were medium-term repairs, she wanted to make longer-term, habit-forming changes for her patients. So as a single mum, with 2 children under 2, she took a very bold step and created Physiocise. There was a method in her madness as Anna-Louise explains, but to place this decision in context, it was before the Physio + Pilates wave had arrived.
Anna-Louise has since taken many other bold steps, forging links, and partnerships and breaking new ground using her Physiotherapy skills and a warm smile to create products and services that didn't exist before.
Probably the closest we have to a Physio Celebrity, Anna-Louise explains how this occurred and how it ties in with her two other passions, teaching and journalism.

You might say that Mick did it tough getting to his final dream of being a Sports Physiotherapist. With too many 'distractions' he didn't gain direct entry, and only just scraped into Exercise Physiology with a very late 'cash-only' offer. Then, after overseas travel, and on the back of his rural upbringing, he snapped up a place in a newly minted Physio program in Townsville @ James Cook University.
However, once his ball was rolling it hasn't stopped. With stints in Townsville covering rugby, Newcastle covering soccer and in Melbourne, netball, Mickha amassed a range of Sports Physiotherapy experience in a range of high-performance teams. He also developed a deliberated focus on ACL prevention and rehabilitation.
Learn how and why Mick deliberately built his social platforms as part of his business within a business plan, and where he would like to see Physio grow.

This conversation was recorded with Dr Linda Khong while she was in Singapore, celebrating the Chinese New Year.
During our conversation I was struck by how Linda has traversed so many aspects of our profession; clinician + academic, private + public practice and Asian + Australian culture.
Linda explains how she started out with the Singaporean family's dream of a degree in business and the goal of making a pot of gold when a couple of experiences changed the direction of her professional and personal life, and how they continue to be core principles today.
For young Physiotherapists considering where they want to be in 5 or 10 years professionally, Linda has some sage words of experience to share + she has a few life truths that are also worth absorbing.
A lovely conversationalist, I hope you will enjoy this delightful Physio+10 episode with Linda as much as I did.

Physio+10 focuses on the journeys of trailblazing Physiotherapists and today's conversation is with Associate Professor Dale Edgar. I learned that the nature of managing a burns patient covers the full gamut of Physiotherapy skills - that is you need to manage physical (i.e., injured muscles, skin, bone, nerve), psychological & social components. Secondly, it is over a long period of time 18-24 months. This has provided Dale with a unique perspective on the health continuum, something that I think could be better utilised in the current model of reactive Physiotherapy in private practice.
Dale strongly advocates for the benefits of baseline measurements, including quality of life measures and working out how we can better serve our patient communities through employing preventative strategies targeted to their needs.

BiographyA senior physiotherapist and translational researcher for over 30 years, he has been devoted to the specialization in the provision and improvement of burn survivor and acute trauma rehabilitation in a number of Australian burns and plastic surgery (trauma) units. More recently Dale has applied his experience and research outcomes in the development of perioperative optimization systems for patients having surgery in both tertiary and secondary hospital contexts. After recently moving from Fiona Stanley Hospital, his current clinical workload includes the complete inpatient journey from ED to ICU, medical and surgical wards, as well as inpatient rehabilitation, mental health and palliative care. In recognition of his leadership, research and contributions to burn patient rehabilitation across the globe, he was awarded the Andre Zagame Rehabilitation Specialist Prize by the ISBI in 2012 and again in 2018. Dale’s understanding of global issues was heightened after 2001 as the recipient of the Johnson and Johnson Education Scholarship, supporting visits to burn units in America, UK and Europe. His passion moving forward is to revolutionize the rehabilitation treatment of patients with injury and burn trauma, to be responsive to the accurate and systematic measurement of severity and outcomes. Through education in, and the establishment of, outcome-based care, modern health systems will reap benefits from embedded research evidence and further, be able to direct health resource usage. His aim is to provide clinicians with the tools to optimize and improve the traumatic injury survivor's journey to recovery anywhere in the world.
Dale is an active member of the local, regional and international burn injury community. He has been involved in education in Western Australia, contributing to the Statewide Telehealth Education program and the Burn Management Program. Dale’s passion is the delivery of low barrier access education which in July 2015 resulted in the establishment of an online curriculum for students wishing to achieve the Masters in Burn and Trauma Rehabilitation. This course was launched at The University of Notre Dame Australia (www.nd.edu.au), Fremantle and has graduated 2 Masters, 7 Grad Diplomas and 14 Grad Certificates to date. Dale has also been involved in facilitating improved burn care in Nepal since 2003. Dale was integral in organizing five Nepali staff from the Bir Hospital in Kathmandu to attend the ANZBA Conference and observational visit in Perth in Oct - Nov 2013. Political and service changes in Nepal after the earthquake of 2015 has made return difficult. He is in collaboration with Rotary Clubs in Perth to develop a sustainable project and return in 2022/23.

Physio+10 focuses on the journeys of trailblazing Physiotherapists and today's conversation is with Ass. Prof. Bronwen Ackermann. I am continually amazed when meeting Physios on this podcast, about the diversity and creative intellect they have applied to new areas of clinical practice. Bronwen takes her core Physiotherapy skills and applied them to the niche of performing artists and in particular musicians. She quickly realised that these highly talented and skilled performers actually knew little about how their own bodies functioned or the loads they placed on them with practice and performance, and so started her journey.
Bronwen has not just treated these performers, she has led panel discussions, developed course curriculum, conducted research and advised Australian and overseas performers, Universities and orchestras in this expanding field. As a result, performers now have the opportunity to better understand how to limit performance injuries, and how to better manage anxiety when performing and practitioners understand how to assist performers in better managing their injuries.

Steve has degrees in Exercise Physiology, Geography and Physiotherapy; which probably says it all! He is one of the most passionate Physiotherapists I know and really focuses on health and wellbeing as a total package for his clients. I think this is what makes him extra special as a clinician.
In this podcast Steve ;
Biography
Steve was born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada where he lived the first 26 years of his life. For the majority of his childhood and adolescence, he participated in a wide range of sports including ice hockey, baseball, and track and field. His true passion was for hockey and he competed successfully at the highest levels for his age into his teenage years.
After successfully completing high school, Steve went on to attend Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Physiology and a second major degree in Geography. While completing these degrees he also played hockey for WLU and competed in regional and state-level ‘body-to-weight’ powerlifting competitions. For the next two years, Steve utilized his skills as an Exercise Physiologist, Personal Trainer and qualified strength and conditioning coach to help elite level athletes excel in their chosen sports.
At the age of 26, Steve accepted an offer to attend Curtin University in Western Australia to undertake a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiotherapy, which he completed in 2000. Steve’s unique skill set allowed him to offer a holistic approach to his clients that often focused on health, nutrition, movement, hands-on therapy, and performance-driven outcomes. During the first six years of practice, Steve also worked as a senior lecturer at the Australian Institute of Fitness speaking on a range of subjects including nutrition, strength and sports conditioning, and rehabilitation.
After the successful completion of his physiotherapy degree in 2000, Steve resumed his competitive sporting career by participating in Inline Hockey. He represented Western Australia at the national Inline Hockey championships in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009, and 2011 and represented Australia at the World Inline Hockey Championships in 2002 and 2004.
Health and wellness, combined with high performance have been a passion of Steve’s throughout his life. For more than seven years Steve worked as Director of the Body Genius Institute and contributed to the development of world-class health & wellness and high-performance facility.
The Body Genius Institute allowed Steve to express his passion to a much wider audience and really represented an extension of his own life’s work. The Body Genius tag lines are really an echo of his own beliefs …

Today's interview is with Physiotherapist Dr Peter Selvaratram (Platypus Award). In addition to telling us about his distinguished journey as a researcher, author, clinician and educator, Peter provides his personal insights into;
Biography
Peter qualified in 1980 and soon after completed his postgraduate musculoskeletal physiotherapy course in Melbourne. Peter was keen on the question of referred pain, especially referred pain to the upper limb and commenced a Masters in 1983 and then a PhD in 1985. His research was on the Brachial plexus tension test in patients and cadavers. The research involved assessment of patient’s following open heart surgery with shoulder and upper arm pain with a high probability of brachial plexus involvement during open heart surgery and sports people with a high probability of a shoulder component and controls from both groups. In conjunction with discussions with the late Bob Elvey and Prof Lance Twomey, Peter evaluated the Brachial Plexus Tension Test (which is now referred to as the upper limb neurodynamic test) to assess the discriminatory validity of the upper limb neurodynamic test.
Peter completed his specialisation in musculoskeletal Physiotherapy in 2007. He has since mentored colleagues and been an examiner in the specialist programme and now lectures at The University of Melbourne to Doctor of Physiotherapy students.
Peter has a strong interest in the orofacial region and has published book chapters in Sports Physiotherapy in 1995 and in 2009 co-edited and authored Headaches orofacial pain and bruxism: Diagnosis and multidisciplinary approaches to management with 39 other medical practitioners from different specialities and health professionals.
Peter has been performing voluntary community work at Jesuran Wellness Centre conducting trauma counselling to Australians, refugees, and asylum seekers. He also travels overseas to empower people. Peter published a book in 2019 with Hilda Samuel and Helelena Kauppinnen on Healing of the Hurting and helping the wound. This book is being translated into three other languages.
Peter’s sporting interests led him to be a physiotherapist to the Australian men and women’s basketball teams in 1982 and in the same year he was involved with the Australian National hockey competition and the workup hockey competition. He assisted the Sri Lankan cricket team when they initially came to Australia, and later prior to their win in The World cup one day win in 1996. Peter has also been involved with the Melbourne Football Club (1989 - 1998) and the Commonwealth Games in 2006.

Today's interview is with physiotherapist Dr Leanda McKenna (Koala Award) who has extensive experience as a clinician and also a researcher. We discuss with Leanda her career journey and along the way Leanda shares clinical gems like her tips for time management and how to prioritise clinical time with patients.
Biography
After graduating from Curtin University in 1990, Leanda McKenna commenced clinical practice as a physiotherapist at public hospitals and private practice in Western Australia, the Northern Territory and the United Kingdom. She currently practices in Perth, seeing a diverse caseload of patients and has been an academic staff member at Curtin since 2000. Leanda gained her PhD in 2012, which examined shoulder pain in adolescent swimmers. Her research has focused on two areas - shoulder pain and women's health. Specifically for shoulder pain, her research has examined the clinical assessment of the scapular and humeral head position, differences between swimmers and non-swimmers for scapular, humeral head position and muscular characteristics, whether scapular and humeral head position can predict shoulder pain and whether scapular based treatments are effective in shoulder pain. In women's health, her research has examined the assessment and treatment choices that physiotherapists use when treating inflammatory conditions of the lactating breast, predictors to response to treatment in women who have pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain and the relationship between upper back pain and breast size in postmenopausal women.
