Don't have Mormon Pioneer ancestors? No worries! You can choose any of your ancestors who have already been pretty heavily researched by others. Sometimes we get so caught up in looking for people in our tree that need their temple work done, that we forget to connect to those direct-line ancestors whose connection should be stronger with. Listen to learn how I feel about connecting to these ancestors and why it matters and find out about the 4 part video series that will be starting on July 3rd to celebrate Pioneer Day.

What is the purpose of family history work? Is it just to gather names and dates? Professor Amy Harris, director of the Family History Program at BYU, believes that there is much more to it. Genealogical consciousness defines how we live our lives. It governs how we treat people around us: past, present, and future, and guides how we participate in family history work.

In this podcast, we discuss what genealogical consciousness is, the ethics of family history research, and how we should deal with sensitive information that we uncover. Amy Harris also gives some great advice for people just starting out on their family history journey and tips for reframing how we think about it.

For ONE MORE WEEK, you can SAVE $30 for my beginner online family history course, "More Than A Name: A Family History Research Process for Beginners." Use CODE: SEPTEMBER until October 7th to save $30!

This episode answers really the root of all family history research - how to know if a record is for our ancestor or not.

There are 6 Questions that you need to ask yourself before attaching a record to a relative in your family tree:

  1. Who? - who is the record about?

  2. What? - what is the record and what information is it providing?

  3. When? - when did it take place?

  4. Where? - where did it take place?

  5. Why? - why might there be a conflict?

  6. How? - how likely is it correct?

As we ask ourselves these questions, we can better decide if a record is correct or not.

This is an interview with Rhonna Farrer, creator of Rhonna Designs. In this episode, we discuss a bit about her business and apps, but spend most of the time talking about her experience as a Church Service missionary and her involvement with Light Keepers and Rootstech.

Rhonna shares her testimony of the power of family history work and the healing of relationships that can happen beyond the veil.

At the end of the episode, Rhonna shares three simple ways that you can start experiencing the blessings of doing family history work.

Go here to watch Light Keepers Online for free. This is the conference that Rhonna discussed in the episode that is normally an in person event.

Be sure to sign up for Rootstech Connect. It will be a virtual conference in 2021 and is entirely free!

Your tree is all set up on FamilySearch, now what? How do you get started actually doing family history work? In this episode I share three ways that you can jump in and start doing meaningful family history work.

In this episode, I assume that you already have your tree set up in FamilySearch. If you don't, go watch this video where I show how to create a FamilySearch account and get your tree connected to the collaborative Family Tree there.

I also talk a lot about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the work that is done in our holy temples. Click here to learn more about that.
