A podcast that tells the stories of women around the world and throughout history, from all walks of life, who excel, amaze and inspire. Hosted by Justine Reid and Chole Gage.
This week we are giving you a spin and rinse on the news cycle from the past week before we take a month long hiatus.
We will be back in your ears in July (which also happens to be Jussy’s birthday month) but until then please enjoy our take on the final election outcome and who is in our ‘celebrity’ pass basket.
If you’d like to find Chole’s mate Pip she is on IG @thetidysidekick and our friend with the Julia Gillard cross stitches is @jes.hallagan
Our recommendations were ‘The Marvellous Mrs Maisel’ on Amazon Prime and the US season of Love On The Spectrum on Netflix.
As domestic and family violence awareness month draws to a close we sat down with Alexandra Bunton for a very special episode of our “In Her Words” series.
Alex is one of the most talented Basketball players in the country, she has won a silver medal at the world championships playing for the Australian Opal’s.
Alex is also a mother and domestic and family violence victim-survivor and she is now using her platform to educate Australia about domestic abuse.
You can find Alex on Instagram @alexandra_bunton_
This week Chōle and Jus both revisited two of their favourite podcasts as they both have new seasons out. Check out “Something Was Wrong” and “Normal Gossip” if you haven’t already done so.

We are back with another mini ep for you legends!
It would have been remiss of us not to discuss the election so here it is. Our thoughts, feelings, highs and lows from what has been a huge five days in the wake of Australian politics.
As domestic and family violence awareness month draws to a close we also reflect on our feelings about why we feel elated no women being (reportedly) killed this month and why this also isn’t something to be celebrated.

Josephine Baker is the legendary woman Jussy is telling us about this week. Despite being born into extreme poverty and living on the streets of St Louis as a child, Josephine went onto become one of the most successful African American performers in history.
Her cabaret career took her around the world and she began to use her platform to change the world. Without giving away all the details of her incredible story Josephine went into become a Second World War spy and a leader in the civil rights movement.
In modern times she has come to be known as a queer icon because of the way she unashamedly lived her life in a way that deviated significantly from the prescribed social norms of the time.
This week Jussy recommended her new Kip and Co slippers and Chōle could not stop raving about her Google Home.
There were some heavy themes in this episode and if you feel you need to reach out and talk to someone please phone Lifeline on 13 11 14.
This week we are chatting about the Queensland Government’s announcement to implement all 89 recommendations made by the women’s safety taskforce, including introducing new laws to criminalise coercive control.
We also share our thoughts on the recently leaked report commissioned by the AFL regarding the treatment of female umpires and the way the current election campaigns from both major parties are focusing on entirely the wrong issues.
And finally we touch on the Chris Dawson murder trial and our opinions on what makes good journalism.

This week we are chatting about two topics we feel very passionate about.
The first is the US Supreme Courts vote to over turn Roe v Wade. This means the US no longer recognises that a woman has a constitutional right to access an abortion without excessive government interference and is a terrifying step backwards for reproductive rights. It potentially paves the way for abortion to be outlawed.
We also discuss the murder of Chen Cheng, a Melbourne mother of two who was brutality murdered in her home by her husband on the weekend. The Australian media has predictably started to centre the man who did this as a “good guy” and we are absolutely sick of the was this diminishes the horrific acts of violence men perpetrate towards women.

This week we bring you a very special ‘In Her Words’ episode with one of our listeners named “Ness”.
Ness is a victim-survivor or Family and Domestic Violence that is sharing her story in the hope it will help other women to be able to recognise some of the behaviours she was unaware fell under the definition of domestic abuse.
It is a really important conversation and we are so privileged to have been able to sit down with Ness to listen to her story.

Our recommendations this week were; The new season of the podcast ‘Something Was Wrong’ The latest episode of ‘The Imperfects’ with Oliver Twist The Secrets of Playboy on Binge
This week we chat about Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter and the concept of billionaires in general. We've got some BIG feelings and dropped some (not so) fun facts as well as some pretty horrible attempts at maths.
We also touched on the Johnny Depp V Amber Heard case and why we haven't and aren't speaking on it yet.
If you love the pod, make sure you follow us on Spotify and subscribe on Apple Podcasts - as an independently produced pod, your support means the world!
Rosalind Franklin was an English chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work was central to the understanding of the molecular structures of DNA, RNA, viruses, coal, and graphite.
She was also a fiercely intelligent, kick arse feminist with a wicked sense of humour, who was not about to soften herself to be more palatable for anyone and for that, we looooove her.
However, as a woman in science during the 1950’d she experienced significant sexism and her contributions to the discovery of the structure of DNA were not recognised during her lifetime.
Our recommendations this week were:
Anatomy of a Scandal on Netflix
Tik Tok account @lukeeohalloran
TikTok account @dylanjamesmulvaney
and season 4 of Ozarks

We’ve thrown a spanner in the works legends and we are bringing you our usual Tuesday ep on a Thursday because sometimes things don’t go to plan.
We are talking about the upcoming election and the shitty tactics used by journalists to distract us from the things we should be talking about.
We also discuss the Coronial Inquest into the murder of Hannah Clarke and her children. It’s heavy and if you want to sit this one out we understand. If you need to reach out to Family and domestic violence support services in Australia please contact:

Fanny Cochrane Smith was a proud First Nations woman who maintained her connection to her culture as an act of resistance throughout the 19th century in Tasmania.
She became the first Aboriginal recording artist by recording her traditional language through song in order to preserve it.
This week both Chōle and Jussy took a deep dive into Brene Brown’s ‘Atlas of the Heart’ on Binge and cannot recommend it enough.
Chōle also recommended two podcast an episodes;
Brene Brown’s - ‘Unlocking Us’ with Karen Walrond on Accessing Joy and Finding Connection.
And Mia Freedman’s - ‘No Filter’ with Hugh van Cuylenberg.
If you simply cannot get enough of us and want to follow our antics on Instagram and Tik Tok you can find us @sheislegendpodcast.
We have resumed regular programming legends and Chōle is here to tell the story of Ketanji Brown Jackson.
That name may be familiar to you because Ketanji is a current nominee for the Supreme Court, awaiting senate confirmation.
Ketanji has a brilliant legal mind and a breadth of experience that is unrivalled by her counterparts. However, she has faced questioning and criticism far beyond her male and white counterparts.
The week Chōle recommended another episode of The Imperfects because we just love that pod. It was their recent episode with Hamish Blake and Jussy has already started listening.
Jussy recommended the Netflix series “Is it Cake?” which she has been enjoying with her daughter.
As we mentioned our socials are on fire - if you want to join the discussion you can find us at @sheislegendpodcast on TikTok, IG and Twitter.
We had planned to chat about so much this week. However, it would have been remiss of us not to discuss the Oscars.
We wish we were celebrating the achievements of Ariana DeBose and Troy Kotsur; the first openly queer woman of colour and deaf man to win Oscars- respectively.
However, those achievements have been overshadowed and we unpacked it.
Naturally that led into a broader conversation about the endemic crisis that is violence against women in Australia.

We simply adore this woman and have no doubt you will too. If you would like to follow Merowyn you can find her on Instagram @nurse.merowyn
This week we gave a no so subtle plug for Chōle’s next earring release over at @bluebeetleco which is happening today at 8pm.
Chōle also recommended the podcast “Twin Flames” and Jussy gave a very niche shout out to a local restaurant whose garlic bread she cannot stop eating.

I know we had anticipated bringing you this episode in a few weeks but the universe had other plans (Jussy’s words, not Chōle’s).
So this week we bring you the following up from last week - Jus interviews Chōle. We anticipate this episode will bring you as much joy as it brought us when we recorded it.
If not, then we have bulk joy inducing recommendations. Chōle recommend the TV adaptation of Jonathan Van Ness’s hit podcast ‘Getting Curious’ where they tackle new questions in each episode on topics they do not know about.
Jussy recommended the podcast “Normal Gossip” which delivers juicy, funny and enthralling yet banal gossip about people you’ll never know and never meet. It’s just brilliant!
We have jumped back into the land of Tik Tok legends, so if you are that way inclined please give us a follow. Until next week - BIG LOVE!!!
As promised 60 minutes delivered their interview with opposition leader Anthony Albanese on Sunday night. It was a stark contrast to the interview with Scott Morrison only a few weeks earlier. Naturally we had a lot to say about it.
We also had a big chat about the Australia Unites: Red Cross Flood Appeal and what unfolded during the broadcast. In 2022 should two men kissing and a man wearing a dress be seen as ‘controversial’ or something to poke fun at!?!
(Spoiler - the answer is NO!)
Thanks for listening legends we will be back in your ears again on Thursday with an INCREDIBLE episode. In the meantime hit subscribe so you don’t miss an episode.

You asked and we delivered.
This week on She is Legend, Chole interviews Jussy. It is a candid conversation that ends up with us both in tears. We hope it’s everything you anticipated.
This week our recommendations were the new Nars Light Reflecting foundation - Jussy is convinced you will all love it. And Chole is back on the “new recipe a week” train with the website bestrecipes.com.au

In today’s mini ep we chat about the IWD theme #BreakTheBias and also unpack why Grace Tame and Brittany Higgins have become the ‘acceptable’ face of feminism in Australia.
We delve into the incredible ‘Safety. Respect. Equity.’ alliance - a campaign calling for policy reforms to better protect women and children in Australia. The alliance is spearheaded by Grace Tame, Brittany Higgins, Julia Banks, Christine Holgate, Lucy Turnbull, Madison de Rozario, Michele O'Neil, Larissa Behrendt, Chanel Contos, Yasmin Poole, Wendy McCarthy and Georgie Dent. More information can be found here: https://www.safetyrespectequity.com.au
We will be back in your ears on Thursday for a full episode - no points for guessing who it is… you asked and we are delivering.
Speak to you then legends!
In this episode Jussy shares the Inspiring story of Katherine Johnson - a mathematician who was one of the first African American women to work at NASA.
Katherine was also a pioneer in space science and exploration. She refused to be limited by society's expectations of her gender and race and opened the door for more blak women to step into spaces they were previously excluded from.
This week jussy recommended the podcast “Restart” with Madeline West and Chole gave us the low down on Geocaching and her new fave pod - The Trojan Horse Affair (apologies for where that convo landed).

Our first ‘In Her Words’ episode of she is legend for 2022 is here and it is with none other than the legendary Hannah Diviney.
Hannah is a writer, disability advocate, co-founder of the Krazy Kosci Klimb, editor in chief of Missing Perspectives, a finalist for both the Australian Women’s Weekly Women of The Future Awards and a 2022 young Australian of the year nominee.
Hannah also has a global change.org campaign for a Disney princess with disabilities with almost 60 000 signatures. If you haven’t already signed it you can find it here: https://www.change.org/p/disneystudios-create-a-disney-princess-with-disabilities

We have no doubt you’ll love this interview legends.
This week we unpack Lizzie (aka: the queen) having covid and what that has meant for those who are tasked with the role of stepping up in her absence - Prince Andrew we are looking at you.
Off the back of this we discuss cancel culture and the settlement between Virginia Giuffre and Andrew.
Then we take a deep dive into Kelly Clarkson’s decision to change her name to Kelly Brianne. In 2022 should we still be taking on last names of our husbands and fathers!? We weigh in but cannot wait to hear your thoughts next Sunday on our Instagram @sheislegendpodcast for “Say It Loud Sunday”.
We also give a shout out to the incredible new podcast from Future Women “There’s No Place Like Home” (https://open.spotify.com/show/6ROyVLfdnK7mjGkTD9pa6S?si=l2vuytRkTNKURF-bmvyYkg)
This week we delve into the situation that is unfolding between Kanye West and Kim Kardashian and the violent and abusive behaviour on display.
We also address that 60 Minutes interview with ScoMo and Jenny. We had a lot of thoughts and feelings, not least of all being - why on Earth is it up to Jenny to rehabilitate the public reputation of her husband??
If this episode brings up anything for you, please contact 1800 RESPECT
Although she never considered herself a hero Miep Gies is definitely a hero in our books.
Without giving too much away, Miep was integral in keeping the Frank family alive in their Amsterdam annexe. She also found, and at great personal risk, preserved the diaries of Anne Frank.
We are truly in awe of her and this story brought us both to tears.
This week we recommended the book of poetry “This Is Where The Healing Starts” by Toni Francis, Afterlife on Netflix and the episode of one of our favourite pods The Imperfects - titled “Georgia & Hugh”
Want to support our show? We are high-fiving anyone who clicks ‘subscribe’ on Apple or ‘follow’ on Spotify and fist pumps for a five star review.
This week Chole and Jus discuss the circus that is happening in federal politics at the moment with the text message scandals involving Gladys Berejiklian and an annonymous senior cabinet minister, who Bob Carr is now claiming is Peter Dutton. We go deep on some juicey theories about how that's playing out.
We also discuss the address made by Queen Elizabeth in which she conveyed her wish that Camilla, Duchess of Cronwall, be referred to as the Queen Consort once Charles takes the throne. We've got some thoughts about it.
As always, Legends, if you have a spare second and could leave us a cheeky rating on Spotify or a little review on Apple Podcasts we would be SO appreciative!
Sylvia Plath is one of the most well known and admired poets of the 20th century. She is celebrated for her contribution to literature, the confessional poetry movement and feminist writing.
Her works such as “Daddy”, “Lady Lazarus” and her semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar normalised female anger and unapologetic expression. In her work she explores the concepts of patriarchy, power, sexual double standards, the quest for identity and mental health in the 1950’s.
She is often defined by her tragic death. Whilst Jussy attempted to tell her story outside of this lens we acknowledge that it is a heavy episode that may trigger our listeners.
If this episode has brought up anything you are struggling with please call lifeline on 13 11 14 or 1800 RESPECT.
Our recommendations this week were; Jericho Road Clothing (yes - again) It’s Been a Pleasure Noni Blake by Claire Christian Jussy’s mates cyclone cocktail recipe James Hillier (aka: Nordacious) Chole was late to the party with Google assistant
As always if you love what we create each week then give us a little love by writing a review or rating the pod.
This episode discusses themes of severe depression, suicidal ideation and suicide, and domestic violence. If this brings up anything for you, please contact Lifeline in 131114 or 1800RESPECT
In our new bonus episodes we will be chatting about and unpacking topics and stories that are in the headlines that week! This week we chat about the horrendously discriminatory enrollment contract sent out to students of Citipointe Christian School in Brisbane. We also discuss the debate over Spotify's responsibility towards mitigating misinformation and whether or not we think that boycotting the platform altogether is the right move - spoiler alert - we don't.
Find us on Instagram @sheislegendpodcast and slide into our DMs if you want to chat about the ep. We love hearing your view points!
Welcome back to season three if She is Legend. Chole kicks us off this week with the story we all needed to hear… none other than the icon that is Betty White.
Betty was an American actress, comedian and pioneer of early television. Her career spanned more than eight decades and she is often dubbed the “First Lady of Television".
Betty is also known for her advocacy in opposing racial injustice, her allyship to the LBGTQIA+ community and her activism in animal welfare. It is a wholesome and uplifting story that we know you’ll love.
We had a lot of recommendations after coming back from our break. This week Jussy recommended ‘Love Me’ on Binge, Love Stories (the book by Trent Dalton) and the internet sensation - Wordle.
Chole raved about the podcast Sweet Bobby, the new Ben Crow interview from The of the Academy of Imperfection (on the Imperfects podcast) and and the movie The Unforgivable on Netflix.
As mentioned in the pod you can now also leave a five star rating on Spotify as well as Apple so if you haven’t done that already consider it your good deed for the week.

In our last episode of 2021 Jussy tells a story very close to her heart. It is the story of Aunty Oodgeroo Noonuccal.
Oodgeroo was an Aboriginal rights activist, poet, veteran, environmentalist and educator.
She was previously known and is often referred to as Kath Walker (her birth name). However, in 1987 she adopted the name Oodgeroo (meaning 'paperbark tree') Noonuccal as part of a protest against the upcoming 1988 bicentennial celebrations.
You can’t help but love her story!
Jussy recommended the brand new clothing label ‘Field’ which is launching today and Chole’s recommendations were the podcasts ‘The Drop Out’ and ‘Mediocre’.
We also gave a cheeky shout out to the ‘Uluru Statement’ episode of the podcast ‘So Tell Me’ ~ which is where Jussy and Chole first connected.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year legends. See you in 2022!
Marie Curie, is famous for her work in the field of physics and chemistry. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and went on to become the first person to win a Nobel Prize TWICE!!!
The research alongside her husband Pierre led to the discovery of polonium and radium, and she championed the development of X-rays ~ so much of Marie’s work is still used today.
Jussy’s recommendation was the HBO Max series ‘The sex lives of college girls’ ~ available on Binge in Australia.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and because we are feeling festive we are taking a deep dive into the “Queen of Christmas”… Mariah Carey!!!
Mariah is a singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. Known for her five-octave vocal range, melismatic singing style, and signature use of the whistle register. However, her story is relatively unknown and it is remarkable.
Jussy and Chole both recommended the podcast ‘Shandee’s Story’ by award winning journalist Hedley Thomas. In this series Hedley tries to uncover who is responsible for the brutal murder of Shandee Blackburn.
They both also gushed over their love of ‘Dyson’ after purchasing an air wrap and a new vacuum - yes this is what your mid 30’s looks like!
Here it is legends the story you’ve been asking for… MONICA LEWINSKY!!!
If you think you know Monica’s story then think again… we are not here to just talk about a White House scandal because that does not define this remarkable woman. We are here to look at she coped with being patient zero of online public humiliation and how she managed to reclaim her narrative and find purpose in her past.
She is is an American activist, television personality, fashion designer, and former White House intern… and so much more!
The organisation she works with in Australia is Project Rockit. https://www.projectrockit.com.au/
In this weeks episode of “Let’s Chat About” we unpack the theory of the “male gaze”. What exactly does the term mean and why is it relevant? We are here to help you understand through a conversation that takes into account the history of the term and it’s relevance in today’s society. As always, if you are a fan of She is Legend then please follow or subscribe and give us a glowing review, because that makes you a legend!
Hello legends, this week is full of suspense as Jussy tells the story of Nancy Wake.
Nancy was one of the most effective and cunning British agents working in German-occupied France during World War II.
The Gestapo called her “The White Mouse” for the way she deftly avoided their traps during World War II.
Our recommendations this week were The Saturday Quiz which can be found at ~ https://www.thesaturdayquiz.com.au ~ sign up and let us know your scores.
The series “Impeachment: American Crime Story” which is the third season of the FX true-crime anthology. Which portrays the Clinton–Lewinsky scandal and is based on the book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President by Jeffrey Toobin.
Chole is also vibing her latest nail polish find called “Miss Frankie” https://www.missfrankie.com.au#NotSponsored.

Yes that’s right… after promising us all she would tell the story of Shania Twain one day Chole has finally delivered.
Shania really needs no introduction, as one of the first country-pop crossover singer songwriters Shania has sold over 100 million records, making her the best-selling female artist in country music history and one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
However, her story is one of both tragedy and triumph so - ‘let’s go girls!’
This week Chole recommended In Practice skincare and Jussy recommended the series Maid on Netflix.

Welcome back to our let’s chat about series of She is Legend where we have a short sharp chat to unpack a topic related to feminism, social justice or current world events.
This week we are unpacking the topic of intersectionality. The term has become commonplace in feminist dialogue but it isn’t new.
We discuss the origins of the theory and how it has transformed into a practical lens that creates safe and equitable spaces.
Enjoy legends!
Claudette Colvin is the the civil rights activist who sparked the civil rights movement in Montgomery, Alabama.
We have been aquatinted with the story of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King but Claudette truly founded the revolution and Jussy shares her story with us this week.
Our recommendations are The Culture podcast - specifically the ‘Real Housewives’ ep. the latest Jericho Road release - specifically the playsuit.
Chole re-recommends Leigh Sales book “Any Ordinary Day” and the podcast “Something Was Wrong” that explores the trauma, and recovery from shocking life discoveries and relationships with sociopaths and narcissists.
We are back with a bang legends!
Chole shares the story of the incredible Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg ~ the demure firebrand who in her 80s became a legal, cultural and feminist icon.
Ruth fought tirelessly for women's rights in the 1970s, she was subsequently appointed a Supreme Court justice and served 27 years on the nation's highest court, becoming its most prominent member.
Get the tissues though…. even Chole cried in this one.
Our recommendations this week were Leigh Sales book ‘An Ordinary Day’ and Sex Education on Netflix (3rd season out now).
P.s. Sorry about Jussy’s mic/connection ~ she recorded from a hotel quarantine bathroom.
Sinéad O’Connor is an Irish singer-songwriter, who is famous worldwide as much for her music as for the many controversies that she has been a part of.
With her debut album in the late 1980s, she got her first shot at fame but it was in 1991 with her song ~ “Nothing compares 2 U” she became a worldwide sensation. Her signature bald look, her powerful music, and her bold voice made sure that she remained in the news constantly.
Jussy unpacked her 2021 memoir “Rememberings” ~ which is a bittersweet non linear recount of her intriguing life.
We had so much banter about our recommendations this week but we’ll save our top three to post in stories as well as pics of Chole and Sinead rocking their shaved heads!
This week's episode was sponsored by PJs & Bed. You can shop their range of dreamy, buttery soft PJs at www.pjsandbed.com - use code SHEISLEGEND at checkout for 15% off your purchase!
Welcome to our new series “Let’s chat about”… where we have a short chat on a Tuesday about a topic we want to unpack.

The article we reference is by Sian Ferguson and can be found here:
https://everydayfeminism.com/2016/06/common-internalized-misogyny/
In this episode Chole explores the icon that is Iris Apfel.
Iris is one of the most vivacious personalities in the worlds of fashion, textiles, and interior design, and over the past 40 years, she has cultivated a personal style that is both witty and exuberantly idiosyncratic.
By her own confession she has become an ‘Accidental Icon’ with almost 2m IG followers at 100 years old.
Recommendations from Chole this week included Leigh Sales 4 part series “Why Women Are Angry” on ABC iview.
Jussy recommended, Incarceration Nation - exposes the racist foundations of policing and imprisonment in Australia. You can find it on SBS on demand and we highly recommend it for all allies!
This week Jussy tells us the story of Madeline Stuart, who at 17 years old made a decision to become a model, and by 18 years old had become the world’s first supermodel model with Down syndrome. Maddy has always been supported by her mum Rosanne to believe she could do anything she put her mind to. Together they wanted to help the world change the way it views people with a disability and that’s what they did!
