Laughter and Libations: Recent Episodes

Shawneille Campbell-Dunbar

Laughter and Libations is about the intentional pursuit of joy. I'm challenging myself to be courageous and share my stories as I shake, stir, strain, steep, brew, and mix up my favorite libations and laugh my way into a more joyful life. I’ll share experiences that focus on self-care, home life, and work life, and I invite you to join me on this journey.

October has been a heavy month for me. Perhaps you can relate. This episode is meant to acknowledge this and encourage laughter to break through the heaviness and continue on this journey to increase joy in your life and those round you.

It's the beginning of the holiday season. Yet, I’ve found it hard to celebrate. I touch on this and share a reminder that we aren’t powerless even though so much around us may be out of our control. In the midst of it all, we can cultivate gratitude. I also reflect on self-improvement, which is a humorous and continuous adventure.

This has been a month of many celebrations including birthdays for my mom (Vivian), husband (Woody), cousin (Brian), nephew (Alex), brother (Arnold), and brother-in-law (Chauncey). Happy Birthday to everyone!

Also, Woody and I celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary and enjoyed what we call a wellness day together. We stayed close to home, tuned inward, and unplugged from externals for a little while. It was a reminder that down time can be exactly what's needed to relax and recharge.

I've been spending more and more time with my parents, and thought I'd share a few of the little things I do to bring joy to our times together.

This episode is dedicated to my father, Larry Campbell. On the occasion of his 79th birthday, we gathered together for an entire weekend at my parents' home in Cartersville, Georgia. Yes, I was on location--in the country--for this recording. Yes, there are special guests, and you know I don't really do that! lol.

It was a weekend that I'll never forget. Sitting down to have a candid Q and A session with my siblings was a first. Having our father present was a gift. Having my mother in the background was a gift and also funny at times. You can hear her in the background just talking, talking, and talking. I couldn't edit it out. I can only do so much. Listen. Laugh. Remember to celebrate every moment you have with your family!

Family Present for the Celebration:

  • My Parents: Vivian and Larry
  • My Brother: Arnold and Robin (wife)
  • My Sister: Chanda, Chauncey (husband), Kyland aka Lando (son)
  • My Husband: Woody

If you've been feeling a little overwhelmed lately, you aren't alone. Me too! It's made it a bit challenging to answer simple questions like, "How are you?" Perhaps, like me, you need a reminder that there is always something to celebrate even when times are difficult. I know. I've faced a few difficulties, including a foot injury, during the past few weeks. It's been hard to feel free when walking is a struggle. Nevertheless, I found humor in this unexpected experience. I hope you can laugh along with me.!

The long holiday season can be a very challenging time for many reasons. Sometimes little, everyday things can help make space for joy. Looking for joy during times of struggle wasn't something I would've done a few years ago. It's one of the things that I've learned. I encourage you to do the same, particularly when there seems to be no joy at all.

This month has brought us challenges associated with hurricane season, and I'm reminded to be grateful for every single day.

The list of celebrations for September is long and includes my mother's birthday, Woody's birthday, and my 15th wedding anniversary! I also take time to celebrate the power of our mothers.

If you need a laugh, you've come to the right place. I'm sure one of my rants (stories) will at least make you smile. Perhaps you can relate to having plans go wrong and being stuck in a weird situation.

The libation of the month didn't turn out too well for me. It doesn't make the cut. Still, it was fun mixing it up!

It's all about health this month. I'm celebrating feeling good in my body and even the experience of going through medical testing and waiting for the results. There is a connection between your relationships and the laughter and joy you experience. Perhaps you haven't thought about this. I've been thinking a lot about it lately.

  • Who are the people in your life?
  • How often do you interact with the people in your life?
  • What are those interactions like?

Are your interactions with others filled with laughter and joy most of the time, some of the time, or rarely? What if you discovered you rarely interact with people with whom you laugh the most? What if you discovered you rarely interact with the people who bring your the most joy? What would you do? Could you change those interactions to increase laughter and joy (for you and the other person)?

This episode can help give you insights about your relationships and give you a starting point for how to change your interactions to align with your daily laughter goal and your desire for more joy.

This month has been filled with rain. I mean rain--as in rainy days. I also mean rain--as in challenges. Finding laughter and joy in the rain is no easy feat. What happened to the peace I experienced while on vacation? Why does it feel like I never took a vacation at all? If you know what I'm talking about, raise your hand. I've been going and going, and I don't want to keep going at the same pace. An adjustment is needed and slowing down and creating more space for peace seems to be the way to go. If you need to do the same thing, I have an idea that I think can help.

This one is a keeper for me! I had fun tasting it neat and with two drops of water. I meant to add one drop. However, my technique was off :) So two drops made it into the glass instead of one. It worked out. I think I liked it even more. Check out the review.

Who wants to wait for joy? Not me! Yet, I found myself doing this. I was waiting for conditions to be just right--the perfect time, the perfect place, etc. Seeking perfection can be a real bummer! I was waiting for the perfect conditions to allow myself to do the things I enjoy. Why?

In this episode, I share a few examples of how I've let opportunities to increase joy slip right by me. I also share how small adjustments can help ensure this doesn't continue to happen. Listen and see if you can relate. You might find that you can benefit from making a few adjustments, too.

Ask me what I'm listening to, looking at, and reading these days. Ask me. It's all related to the holidays. It can't be helped. There are aspects to this time of year that appeal to me. Cheerful music. Twinkling lights. Sentimental movies. Time with family and friends. Reminders to enjoy everyday!

There have been some funny moments this month. I share a few. I laugh a lot. I hope you will, too. The libation of the month feature non-dairy nog (a favorite). October is when it feels like we're turning from summer to fall and then back again. It's an in-between time. Nevertheless, I mix up a libation with fall flavors. Try it and let me know what you think. This is also when homecoming festivities happen at many of Atlanta's colleges and universities. I celebrate my journey from my time at Georgia Tech to now. I'm beginning to think about the next season for the podcast, and I ask for your input. Don't miss this opportunity to tell me what new topics you want me to cover or what topics you want me to revisit. I'm interested in knowing what is most helpful to you.

Tough times do come around and for me, it's been since late July. Every time the phone rings or a text message pops up, I cringe a little because serious challenges have surfaced in the lives of family and friends in my circle. These challenges relate to health and the loss of loved ones, and there are far too many to count.

In this episode, I share my experiences with feeling stuck, sad, and scared and not being able to get to joy. This is not easy to talk about. I almost passed on publishing this episode. Then, I remembered that everyone goes through tough times at one point or another and just might benefit from the lessons I've learned.

One key lesson is to focus on peace. Listen to learn more!

We are halfway through 2023, and I encourage you to stop, do a self-check, and celebrate being you right here, right now. I'm not talking about your accomplishments. I'm sure your accomplishments are exceptional. However, I'm talking about you. In this episode, I ask you to identify at least one thing you can celebrate about you.

We're in the summer season! Light, bubbly libations are my go-to. The libation of the month is definitely a treat. Listen and mix at the same time. I think you're love it.

I'm on my health and wellness kick this month, too. I'm all about preventive care, and this month was filled with it. Listen to this month's rants for an important reminder for you and, of course, laughs! By the way, I went to the dentist...ha ha ha...again.

I wrap up with my made-up questions this month! LoL! It's what happens if listeners don't send in questions. Hey, it is what it is. I still have fun with it and share information you need to know.

Laughing Matters is published at the end of each month. It's the end-of-the-month highlights and includes four segments: celebrations, libation of the month, rants, and questions and answers. Celebrations are about intentionally forming a habit of noticing and acknowledging the good in you, in your life, and in your sphere of influence. The libation of the month is based on whatever I fancy or feel inspired by at the time. I share step-by-step instructions and you can mix right along with me. Rants are about anything I find funny and want to share. Then, I wrap up by answering questions received from listeners throughout the month.

It's time for a self-assessment, and mid-year is the perfect time to do it. You set your daily laughter goal at the beginning of the year, you focused on it, and now it's time to check-in with yourself. There's no judgement here. It's just a bit of accountability. You've got this!

In this episode, I share my approach to doing a quick self-assessment. I share my starting point at the beginning of the year and where I am now. I also talk about the six actions I committed to taking to increase laughter and joy in my life this year.

Guess what? I haven't met my daily laughter goal for the year yet, and that's alright. I'm making progress. Hopefully, you are making progress, too.  Let's take time to stop and check-in together.

This month was full of fellowship for me. I was out and about more than usual, and I share those wonderful experiences. I also rant about my worst hotel stay ever at The Starling Atlanta Midtown Curio Collection by Hilton. If you're planning to visit Midtown Atlanta, know before you go! I also try a wine spritzer for a second time. The first time wasn't so great. This recipe is so much better. Try it and let me know what you think. I wrap up with encouragement for a listener, who is having trouble meeting laughter goals. I share reminders that are great for anyone struggling to meet personal goals.

When people show you who they are, what is your response? Do you accept it or do you wish for something else? If you find yourself wishing people are different than they actually are, this episode is for you. It's a reminder to accept people as they are and not as you wish them to be. It's a reminder that spending your time wishing, waiting, and trying to make people different than they are can lead to so many things that are the opposite of joy.  You can choose acceptance and then move forward from there.  You can choose acceptance and open a space for peace and ultimately joy.

I've been thinking about my relationship with the young people in my life lately, and I share a change I'm making to hopefully enhance my interactions. Perhaps you'll be inspired to do something similar. The libation of the month is another experiment! I make a single serving of rum punch using the strawberry syrup I'm made myself. Try it and let me know what you think. I'm open to suggestions. Rants cover an update on my toe nail saga! Remember that whole experience from last fall? I also give you a glimpse of my experience using the Duolingo App to learn Spanish. Let's just say losing doesn't sit well with me (Ha!). Q&A features a question about what to do when you don't feel like laughing and you don't feel joy. There's also a new question of the month for you to answer. I'd love to hear from you.

I open this episode with a reminder for you to take time to check-in with yourself. We're often very busy. However, it's still important to stop and check-in. I share why I started the podcast and what it's all about. I also share two insights I've gained after two years of focusing on increasing laughter and joy.

In this month's episode, I celebrate 35 years as a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as well as the wonderful time I had on a trip to Negril, Jamaica with my line sisters (Swea, Sabrina, and Andrea). Here we are in the middle of the holiday season. As I mentioned in the episode 48, you can't hide. Even if you don't celebrate the holidays, you may still feel the effects from all of the external stimulation. In this episode, I help you focus on what's really going on with you. It's time to stop and tune in to your feelings, thoughts, and actions. It's time to figure out what you need to ensure the holiday season is what you want it to be or need it to be this year. I highly recommend listening to this episode with someone you think needs to focus on self-care right now. In this episode, I help you focus on identifying what will help you the most right now. The libation of the month is off-season, fabulous, and full of lots of crushed ice! I have loads to say about the current mercury retrograde period. Two more days to go! How would you deal with losing your cell phone, losing the tv remote control, wrestling with file upload errors, watching your hair extensions fall out, finding yourself in the smallest hotel room ever, or losing half of your toe nail? I'd like to know because all of these things happened to me this month, and it was definitely a memorable adventure.

June has been one for the books. I know. That's why it's important to stop and take inventory of all that is good in your life. This episode reminds you to cultivate gratitude, celebrate, and laugh. Reach for joy! I rant and laugh about another round with little beings and try my best to like a wine spritzer. It doesn't work though. Soda water over wine! Oh no!

This month I reflect on the reason why I'm forming a habit of celebrating life everyday, and I continue to encourage you to do the same thing. I rant about Facebook's decision to get rid of podcasts and revisit the FitBit situation with an update. The libation of the month is called Raspberry "Tea" and of course it has my twist on it. Get your ice cold tea right here! I wrap up with advice on selecting your personal song for the year and give the simple reason why my podcast isn't on YouTube...yet. You'll have to see me on Instagram for a little while longer.

This month was a difficult one for me and many in my circle. I was reminded once again that life is fragile and precious. I was reminded that life is not something to take for granted. With this in mind, I prompt you to reflect on your health and celebrate what is going well for you right now. I really needed a bit of uplifting myself, and it was wonderful to laugh. I laughed more than I expected while ranting about the cost of a medication I needed, and I share my fascination with food and beverage containers with long "FREE FROM" lists. Free from sugar. Free from gluten. What is carrageenan anyway? You get where I'm going with this! Finally, I wrap up with a couple of questions and make my first announcement about a couple of new things coming soon in September.

This episode is about one of the health benefits of laughter. Did you know that anticipating laughter can help reduce stress? Anticipating is looking forward to something or expecting something. That something hasn't even happened yet. Imagine that. Anticipating laughter may be just as powerful as actually laughing.

This month features rants about all the things typically done wrong when you have your blood pressure taken during medical appointments and thermostat wars at home. I share my recipe for a libation I like to call Sunny Honey! I also answer a question from a listener who feels anxious about starting a new job and taking on a leadership position.

Laughing Matters is published at the end of each month. It's the end-of-the-month highlights and includes three segments: celebrations, rants, and questions and answers. Celebrations are about intentionally forming a habit of noticing and acknowledging the good in you, in your life, and in your sphere of influence. Rants are about anything I find funny and want to share. Then, I wrap up by answering questions received from listeners throughout the month.

Laughing Matters is published on the last day of each month. It's best thought of as the end-of-the-month highlights. It includes three segments: celebrations, rants, and questions and answers. Celebrations are about intentionally forming a habit of noticing and acknowledging the good in you, in your life, and in your sphere of influence. Rants are about anything I find funny and want to share. This month features a rant about Facebook and the lack of privacy and wraps up with a creative question and answer session.
