Happy New Year! After a short winter "break" we are back! Thank you all for tuning in, it's our wish that these podcasts offer you hope and inspiration during these challenging times.

In this episode Anais, Justin and Jordanne reflect on happenings from 2020. They also share what they look forward to accomplishing in '21.

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

In this episode Anais has the pleasure of interviewing the lovely and talented Texas style and swing fiddle player Katie Glassman. Katie shares a few tunes and stories about how music has touched her life and so many others, especially since the pandemic. She advocates that it's never too late to pick up an instrument! About Katie Glassman:

Katie Glassman is that rare musician who possesses a combination of instrumental virtuosity and powerful musical expression. She is one of the country’s most renowned and decorated Texas-style and swing fiddlers, as well as an accomplished songwriter, singer, and a highly sought after educator.

Based in Denver, Colorado, Katie toured and recorded with the renowned trio, The Western Flyers -- 2018 Ameripolitan Awards "Best Western Swing Group" and Western Music Association and the Academy of Western Artists "Western Swing Album of the Year" award for Wild Blue Yonder. Katie Glassman and Snapshot is her hometown swing quartet highlighting her original songs -- they have released two commercial records, Snapshot and Dream A Little Dream. As a vocalist, Katie won "Female Western Swing Vocalist of the Year" by the Academy of Western Artists in 2018.

As an educator, Katie is the founder, owner, and primary instructor at the online fiddle academy, Fiddle School.com. Since Fiddle School opened in 2018, her thorough online curriculum has given fiddlers around the world the opportunity to learn, improve, and progress in Texas-style fiddling, Western Swing, and early jazz. Offering over 600 instructional videos and countless webinars on fiddling and improvisation, Katie is also an innovator, creating a modern curriculum for a traditional American art form. This is her fiddle pedagogy in a nutshell. She began teaching students of all ages in 1994, many of whom have gone on to become National and state fiddle champions themselves. The Fiddle School "Fiddle From Home" program has been an incredible outlet for fiddlers of all levels throughout the pandemic.

As a fiddler, in 2017, Katie won her 4th National Swing Fiddle Championship in Weiser, Idaho. She also took first in both the Bob Wills and Open divisions at the Bob Wills Festival and Fiddle Contest in Greenville, Texas, and she is the seven-time Colorado state fiddle champion. Other notable victories were in 2013 at Rockygrass in Lyons, Colorado, Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, as well as her two National Championship titles from 1998 and 2001.

Katie holds a bachelor’s in performance with a jazz certificate from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and in 2007 spent a year studying jazz violin at the world-renowned Centre Musique Didier Lockwood in Dammarie-Les-Lys, France. And yet, her true musical education came at the feet of the Texas greats she heard and learned from during her decades of competing and jamming at fiddle contests. Jimmie Don Bates, Dale Morris, Wes Westmoreland, and Joey McKenzie are Katie’s living links to the great tradition of Texas-style fiddling.

In this episode Anais interviews Nancy & Phil Halpin.  They share their musical journey and fond memories of the Homestead Hootenanny's.   The Homestead Hootenannies happened every Sunday from 2010-2016.  The hootenannies were magical evenings bringing the community together to create music and lift their voices in song.

In 2016-2017 tragedy struck the homestead hootenanny family.  Rob Sandiford (his wife Elise), Duane Thorin, Tom Fair and Ed Pausic in separate (unrelated) incidents, along with the founder of the Urban Homestead Jules Dervaes Jr, passed away.  These loses are still strongly felt and the Homestead Hootenanny family hasn't been the same since.

Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.”― Kahlil Gibran

In this episode Anais chats with newly transplanted roots singer Mara Kaye. She and her partner, guitarist, Tim McNalley share musical memories and tunes from the soul.

"MARA KAYE IS THAT RARE CROSS-SPECIES PHENOMENON, A BLUES AMPHIBIAN. WHEN OTHERS ‘SING THE BLUES’ AS IF OFFERING AN UNUSUAL SMALL PLATE AT THE TAPAS BAR, MARA HAS SO IMMERSED HERSELF IN THE IDIOM THAT SHE GOES DOWN TO THE BOTTOM AND DOESN’T NEED AIR UNTIL THE SHOW IS OVER. SHE’S A MODERNIST RATHER THAN A MUSEUM PIECE: HER CREATIONS CAN BE DARKLY MOURNFUL, SAVAGELY VENGEFUL, OR GLEEFULLY EROTIC, BUT THEY ARE ALWAYS LEAVENED WITH BROOKLYN SPICE" https://www.marakaye.com/

Tim McNalley is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and songwriter from Southern California. While most commonly seen on the upright and electric bass, he also performs, records and tours on guitar, cello, mandolin and sitar- a breadth that has allowed him the opportunity to collaborate with artists such as Ariana Grande, Lianne La Havas, Changuito, Steve Grand, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Lianne La Havas, lostboycrow, Juanita Stein, Aashish Khan, Earl Thomas, Jim Kweskin, Burt Turetzky, and more.

In film, McNalley co-wrote, produced, and performed on soundtracks for Sex, Drugs, and Bicycles (2019), Influent (2017) and Zula the Infinite (2016)

McNalley graduated Summa Cum Laude from UC San Diego with a BA in Music and an emphasis in Jazz and the African Diaspora. McNalley has also had the blessing of studying with several notable musicians, including Hindustani music with virtuoso Kartik Seshadri, upright bass with Mark Dresser, as well as composition with Anthony Davis and Grammy winning producer Kamau Kenyatta

Welcome to the Urban Homestead Radio podcast!

In this episode, the Dervaes Family interview a long time friend, Chris Kerston, who works for the Savory Institute. With a longstanding passion for regenerative agricultural and better food distribution systems, Chris has dedicated his life to helping connect ranchers with consumers in ways that create synergistic value for both sides. Chris has also been recognized as a leader in the emerging agri-tourism market and he facilitated a partnership with a European-based hospitality company and the farm he managed. The resulting farmstays provided urban dwellers a recreational, but also educational, outlet to see first-hand how food could be produced in abundance outside the realm of conventional industrial systems. Fostering creative solutions to removing barriers of available land and capital will ultimately help cultivate the next generation of holistic land stewards.
