Such a timely topic for so many. Your host, Donna Peters, chats with Liz Brigham on how to thrive in a dual-career family. HBR research shows that dual-career families take on one of three shapes. Which are you?

  • Primary-Secondary
  • Turn-Taking
  • Double Primary

Research also shows that while 60% of households have both parents working, relationships where the woman makes more than the man are 50% more likely to end in divorce. And women tend to take on 7.5 more hours of domestic work a week than the working male partner. Research suggests same-sex, dual-career couples do better at balancing career aspirations and domestic duties.

Liz views dual-career relationships more like seasons. In this wonderfully inspiring and practical discussion, we talk about the need for communication to fulfill both parties.

Liz is a musician and music producer and even curated this Me-Suite Family Spotify playlist to accompany the discussion. How's that for a Me-Suite suitener! Liz’s core values are:

  • Bring a social awareness that impels to action
  • Luck comes to the prepared mind
  • Find moments of joy in everything you do

Explore the danger when our personal identities become shrunken by our work identities. Your host, Donna Peters, taps into the mesmerizing mind of innovation leader, Amelia Schaffner. Too often, innovation is talked about only in the context of companies. Here, we focus on approaches for innovating ourselves through:

    1. associating, 2. questioning, 3. observing, 4. networking, 5. experimenting
  • quiet inquiry
  • reacquainting ourselves with our 'forgotten mystery'--hidden pockets of who we have been or what we could be
  • focusing on the long now vs. the short now
  • telling our story from different perspectives

Amelia's core values are actually core questions: the who, the why, and the how.

Money isn't everything, but money impacts everything. Indeed, at the core of every career decision is the component of money, salary, compensation. Our behavior and relationship with money were hardwired early in childhood around the age of seven and have control over our senses, perceptions, decisions, and our identity.

Your host, Donna Peters, interviews behavior and money insights pioneer, Hugh Massie, CEO of DNA Behavior. Hugh shares how critical it is to build positive Money Energy--deciding today how you'll think about money, what your relationshp with money means, and how you will talk about money for the longevity and quality of your life. Are you able to observe the emotions and recall some of the decisions you may have made about money based on those feelings?

Do you ask, "How can I make more?" How much is enough? How are my relationships impacted? How do I measure success? How do I better channel money to improve my life and that of many others? Understanding and enhancing our relationship with money helps us create positive money energy and greater wellbeing overall.

I'm your host, Donna Peters, and today we talk about one our most requested topics in The Me-Suite, the topic of Trust. If you're a leader, you're not as trusted as you think you are. That's right. Ashley Reichheld and Amelia Dunlop's recently published research shows how trust impacts the human experience in the workplace--for customers and employees. Their book, The Four Factors of Trust, synthesizes the factors that demonstrate our ability to make and keep good promises. The four factors are: humanity, transparency, reliability, and capability. Notable quotables from this episode include:

  • Leaders overestimate their trustworthiness by 40%
  • 50% of employees don't trust their employer
  • Trust is built in moments of vulnerability
  • You have to give trust to receive trust

The authors also offer free access to their HXTrustID tool. Check out this tool to learn more about measuring trust and positively impacting the human experience in all we do. We're awake working, or doing something related to work, more hours in a day than we're awake not working. We must get trust at work right.

This episode discusses mental health, and is not appropriate for small children.

Your host, Donna Peters, chats with career veterinarian, Dr. Jodi. There's a lot we're learning about wellness and mental health at work...but too little is being discussed about the professionals who do so much for the animals we love. Here we talk about the impact that the pandemic is having on us as pet owners and on the veterinary profession (70% of whom are female). You'll think differently about the vets in our lives after this powerful discussion.

Pets are family and have played a feature role in our home lives and work-from-home lives. Indeed, 70% of US households have a pet. Many households welcomed a pet for the first time during the pandemic, and many are bonding even more closely with their furry kids as we spend more time together at home working and playing. And what about the veterianarians, and the wonderful impact they have on us at our time of need? And what about the statistic that 1 in 6 vets has contemplated suicide, and vets are ~3x more likely to die by suicide than the general population.

We also have some fun with pet names:).

Your host, Donna Peters, sits down with college career counselor, Everette Fortner. We talk about one of the biggest questions when you're 18-22: "What am I going to do with the rest of my life?" Everette applies principles of design thinking to help early career/young adults design their life in three steps:

  • clarifying
  • exploring
  • prototyping

Everette challenges students (and parents) to think about:

  • If anything were possible, what would I be doing after college?
  • What are my three possible lives?
  • What is the design criteria for creating those three possible lies for myself?
  • What is my passion? What gives me energy?
  • Where do I start figuring out my career next steps?
  • How important is my major?
  • How important is that first job out of college?

And of course, we talk about the important role parents play at this life stage.

Everette's core values: family first, energy; exploring.

This episode is a Me-Suite "suitener." Your host, Donna Peters, takes a question from a listener.

The question is, "I haven't got the promotion I thought I'd have by now, and my performance feedback is 'keep doing what you're doing.' What should I do with that feedback?"

Well, it's my favorite question. It's also the most painful because the honest answer is that feedback is lazy, and it's extremely unhelpful. So I want to break this down for a moment for the listener who submitted it and anybody else who might be facing this situation.

No one cares about your career more than you do, and so when you get feedback that is as vague, aka lazy, as keep doing what you're doing, it's going to require you to do a little bit of extra work, obviously, do it respectfully assume positive intention, these were not evil people. But you do need to do some extra work to get specificity around. What do you need to be doing in this next year? And how will you know what is the evidence that you have that you are progressing to the promotion in the next cycle. So this may require a follow up conversation asking for specificity. It may require that you get some tough feedback that you weren't expecting to hear. It may be that you were getting signals that you might have plateaued. And so therefore, you're getting wonderful information that you might want to be seeking work in another organization. Again, this is all information and you need it. And then the most positive thing that can happen is that you do get more specificity around that feedback. And you're very energized to be continuing to grow your skills and demonstrate that you are progressing to secure that next promotion doing everything in your power in your control to do so. The next time you hear feedback, keep doing what you're doing, do not accept that as an answer, and get more clarity.

We take a listener question in this Bonus episode.

Listener Question: I know I need to network, but I feel slimy doing it. What tips do you have for making networking a more positive experience?

Donna Peters: I love this question because networking is a common denominator. We all do it, whether you're in your current role and happy to be in that career, whether you're an employee or an employer, whether you are looking to jump into something new. We are always networking. So I love to have this conversation to make networking feel like a more positive experiencw. It is so critical to us in the workplace.

The first place I would start is with intention. What is your intention for the networking? If your intention is pure, and your intention is positive, that will naturally translate into a more positive interaction. So, for example:

· if your intention is to seek advice because you are having a particularly political situation at work, and you want some advice to help navigating it

· maybe there is another area in another industry, or in another type of work, that you're interested in exploring, and you want to network to learn more

· perhaps it's that you want to network to explore going back to school for a law degree, maybe an MBA, etc.

· maybe your intention is to request an introduction, because you know someone who knows someone that you wish you knew

If your intention is pure, and your intention is positive, it will naturally translate into helping with the slimy feeling you may get when it’s time to network.

The second piece of advice related to networking and feeling uncomfortable is just to remember that people want to help people. Think about a time someone called you and said, “Can I get your advice on something?” I'm pretty sure that that felt pretty good. We like it when people come and want our advice. So, keep that in mind when you're the one reaching out for advice from others.

The third piece is a little trick. It's a courtesy out of respect. At the end of that networking discussion, after you've gotten your intentions met, close with a very simple question: “Is there anything that I can do that can help you?”

So, three tips on helping with networking. Thank you for submitting the question.

The Me-Suite host, Donna Peters, shares the 16 ways to differentiate yourself at work.

There comes a time in our careers when being smart is the price of admission. It used to be that you were often the smartest one in the room. You caught on the quickest. You scored the best. You could figure anything out. You were comfortably top-tier on most performance curves. Now you’re surrounded by other people just like you. So how do you differentiate yourself when you look around and see a bunch of YOUs? You’re now in that sphere of your career when characteristics around leadership qualities, emotional intelligence and creativity start to separate the ‘really goods’ from the ‘amazings.’

There are 16 attributes* that differentiate when being smart is simply the price of admission. As you go through The Me-Suite 16, make a mental note of where you might want to raise your game in 2021. And if you’re super strong already in an area, think about how to coach that in others.

  1. You don’t have to have all the answers; you need smart questions. True leaders are constantly curious and confident that they don’t have all the answers. Which brings us to #2...
  2. Know when to bring in the right person, and do so proudly
  3. Always have a point of view. Your POV is the value you bring in a capsule. The right dose at the right time. Distilled and easy to swallow
  4. Be two steps out in front of anticipating others’ needs. When you’re anticipating, you’re strategic, two steps out in front; you’re in the future
  5. There is no such thing as an informal meeting. Don’t mistake ‘casual’ for half-a$$
  6. Manage up, across and down
  7. Be able to explain complicated concepts to your grandmother. If you can’t explain something complicated to your grandmother, you likely don’t truly understand it yourself
  8. Get into personality profiles. They are reliable guides. Which brings us to #9...
  9. Know your Achilles Heel. Everybody has one...or two
  10. Communicate, communicate, communicate. This isn’t your birthday we’re talking about. No one in business likes surprises
  11. People love to give advice—ask for it more often and treat it like a gift (sometimes you like it, sometimes you don’t, but you smile and say ‘thank you’ always)
  12. Collaborate. Innovation comes from collaboration
  13. Don’t say “I.” “We” is almost always a more accurate reflection of the way something got accomplished
  14. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes before you send an email, give feedback, present a recommendation etc. Try to see the situation from their perspective to tailor your approach
  15. Create a personal advisory board of mentors. Just like companies have a Board of Directors, you need a Board to pursue your own personal goals
  16. Strike the right tech-touch balance. Do you need to pick up the phone, or write a thank-you note by hand? Or can a text emoji suffice? Be intentional in your tech-touch choices

Which one will you work on in 2021? Which one will you coach in others?

The Me-Suite host, Donna Peters, talks about job interviewing--both as an interviewer and interviewee. The quality of your questions is the key.

"I have had the pleasure of interviewing hundreds, maybe even 1000s of people for jobs. I have filtered on education, work experience, perseverance, achievements, character I have probed for how interested is that candidate really in this job. I have administered the airport test to see if we would survive being trapped together at Newark Airport in a snowstorm for five hours. Some of my hires have been iconic success stories, and then there are the hires where I bang my head with the palm of my hand and marvel, Donna, what were you thinking.

So I started thinking deeply about what it really truly takes to identify the best candidate for the job. And I also wondered if the move to virtual screenings and video interviews was changing success factors for hiring. And after much debate with myself and a clustering exercise with sticky notes that made my office look a little bit like John Nash has shed from A Beautiful Mind. I've identified a single common denominator for hiring successm and it's so elegant in its simplicity and applies for in personal or virtual drumroll...

Does the candidate ask good questions?

So why are good questions so important? And that itself is a good question. A good question is so important because it demonstrates research and preparation. It reveals critical thinking and curiosity. It shows comfort with ambiguity and confidence in not knowing. And it challenges the status quo and sparks new ideas. Today, the typical interviewer asks all the questions leaving a smidgen of time at the end for the candidate to slip in a battle question like what has kept you at the company all this time? The future of interviewing is where the candidates are doing the asking to showcase their leadership experience and ideas.

In case you're wondering, there actually is such a thing as a dumb question. It's a question that wasn't informed by preparation that didn't demonstrate intellectual curiosity that wasn't backed by confidence that didn't push the thinking forward. Every job interview should begin with, "What questions do you have for me today?" Your resume is your past. The quality of your questions is your future promise."

The Me-Suite host, Donna Peters, shares practical advice on getting that promotion you want.

We all know the phrase, "if a tree falls in the forest, and no one was there to hear it, does it make a sound?" There's a similar concept when it comes to getting a promotion. People often grouse that they were passed over for promotion because they didn't know the right people. They weren't in the club. I am absolutely sure this does happen and encourage a different mindset, a proactive mindset of what are you going to do about it.

Back to the forest analogy: be the canopy in the sun, not the understory down in the shade on the forest floor. I challenge us to think that getting promoted is not a popularity contest. It's a sunshine contest. If you're all that, then there should be light on you. People should be aware of you and people should be able to tell your story. Having people versed enough to tell your story takes work.

And as you move into 2021 with your own personal career goals, think about who in the forest needs to know. Who are you? What have you done, can do, want to do? And what do you expect to happen this performance year? Create a stakeholder management plan and hold yourself accountable for getting in front of the people who need to know you exist and need to know the highlights of your value story, your personal brand, what people think and feel when they hear your name. And how is that relevant to the future of the business that you're in. Teach people how to talk about you when you're not in the room.

Now, you may not be in control of being in the club. You may not even want to be in the club. You are however in control of shining a light on who you are and the value you bring and the career goals that you have for yourself. So build your stakeholder management plan to achieve your 2021 career goals, and act on that plan.

No one will care about your career more than you do. If you did amazing things in the forest, and there was no one there to see you because you were down in the understory, how amazing were you? It will feel awkward for some of you to promote yourself, to toot your horn no doubt. But is the alternative really in your best interest? There is nothing to lose here except time to promotion.

To get that promotion be in the canopy, not down in the understory. Step into the sunshine. Shine the light on yourself. And if you just got promoted, remember to nurture the next generation in the understory.

The Me-Suite host, Donna Peters, tackles one of the top topics of 2020: LinkedIn and how best to use LinkedIn to support your career goals. LinkedIn cannot be ignored. Career people must embrace LinkedIn, but honestly, most of us have lazy LinkedIn strategies. This short episode is relevant for any career-driven person asking:

  • What do I want to signal as my personal brand?
  • How do I attract and differentiate with potential new employers?
  • How can LinkedIn get me off on the right foot at a new job?
  • How can LinkedIn help me secure that promotion I want?
  • How do I position myself as a thought leader?
  • What if I am seeking new clients?
  • What if I've launched a business?
  • What if I need to expand my network to explore a change?

All of these important, strategic career decisions revolve around the signal you are sending through your LinkedIn profile. Invest in yourself and learn from this episode. And, if someone you care about has a lazy LinkedIn, bring it to their attention.

The Me-Suite host, Donna Peters, brings back a fan-favorite, Mike Malinchock. Mike challenged us in Season 1 Ep 51 to "do hard things." He then went and did a hard thing: cycling literally from East Coast to West Coast with his sons, stopping only to sleep and eat. They were raising funds for the Be Loud Sophie Foundation to cure childhood cancers. In this episode, Mike reflects on the surprising things he learned from the trip and the next hard things on his list to conquer.

Mike also shares perhaps the best ever Me-Suite guest tip for what we can start doing differently on Monday: create your 'Hundred's List.' Every year, Mike and his family create together a list of 100 things they'd like to accomplish in the year. They revisit the list monthly, check off the items completed, and plan for the next items to pursue. Cycling cross-country was on the family's 2020 list...and they checked it off! They've never actually completed all 100 items, but that's not the point:).

Complete a "Hundred's List" with your teams or family, and let us hear about your experience.

On this episode of the Me-Suite, Donna Peters brings back Season 1 Ep15 guest, Tina Gilbert. A lot has changed in our society since we last spoke to Tina in Feb 2020. Tina's wisdom on diversity, equity and inclusion is needed now more than ever...and is always direct and constructive. She challenges us to welcome the friction and be uncomfortable.

In a down-to-earth, authentic way Tina uniquely brings, we discuss the differences between unconscious bias and privilege. We discuss microaggressions and safe spaces. And Tina’s challenge to us all on what it truly means to be an ally is life-altering. Participate, don't just listen.

The Me-Suite host, Donna Peters, has a virtual fireside chat with fellow leadership coach, Katie Adkins.   We talk here about the power of having a "processing partner" to help process our thoughts--both the motivating ones and the self-limiting ones--to achieve our goals.   Research shows people need people.

If you're thinking about getting a coach, this episode will give you some ideas on how to get the most out of a coaching relationship and, most importantly, how to assess the best coaching fit for you.  Experience, approach and fit all matter.

Katie also shares a wonderful tip for helping us stay present and focused in all we do.  If you're on video calls a lot, you'll love this tip.

The Me-Suite host, Donna Peters, helps us think through the right time for a career coach. "Without goals there is no coaching."

One of the most popular questions that I receive is "how do I know if I should get a career coach?" "Is this the right time to have a coach? What is it like to work with a coach?"

Have you been thinking about getting a career coach for a while now? At this self reflective time in our society, you may be asking what is my next move? Am I in the right career? What if my job or my job offer is eliminated? Or already has been? Am I staying fresh and relevant for the future that I want to have?

If you're asking these types of questions, right now may be the right time for a career coach. I believe that there are three reasons that seeking a career coach is a very valuable next step.

1) Those closest to us aren't actually listening closely. Because they think they already know what we're going to say. And it's a thing it's a real thing. It's backed by science. It's called the closeness communication bias. Check out Kate Murphy's book called you're not listening for more evidence that those closest to us aren't actually listening closely. So we often cannot lean on them for these types of critical topics.

2) It can get lonely or as you rise in your career, a Google search yielded about a million hits on leadership and loneliness. And the truth is it's challenging to find people in your regular professional and personal sphere to talk frankly, about your ambitions, your hesitations, your wild ideas, your insecurities. It can get lonelier as you rise.

3) Anyone performing at an elite level at anything has a coach--athletes, musicians, actors, next generation leaders, CEOs-- for these elite performers, the better they are at their craft, the more they seek coaching.

Bill Gates said everyone needs a coach. So then why do we too often say “no, no, I got this." We should be asking ourselves, have I ever regretted investing in myself? Do I have goals and decisions or a crossroads that need focus and action right now? Will I progress more rapidly with an expert in my corner?

A recent client said it best. “I should have gotten a coach a long time ago. If you’re on the fence, jump in and give it a try for a few rounds.”

Credentials, experience and fit all matter, so definitely do your due diligence. To set a complimentary 'discovery call' with Donna Peters in December, book here.

And remember, without goals, there is no coaching.

Cass encourages us to identify what we like, what we don't like.  Protect what we love to do the most.  Cass has a fun, powerful analogy about the "thanksgiving pie plate."   Don't we often have our pie on a separate plate to protect our favorite part of the meal--the part you don't want to touch the other dishes?   Think about what goes on your "thanksgiving pie plate" for work.  What are you uniquely good at?  What do you love?  Put boundaries around it.  Protect it.

Your host, Donna Peters, interviews mom, corporate executive and entrepreneur Lakshmi Natarajan. Lakshmi was asked by a mentor one day to draw a pie and carve out all the various slices of how she focuses her energy. There was no pie slice for "me." Lakshmi was fading as she balanced aggressive career goals, a dual-career marriage and motherhood. She had to make a change and shares with us here how she reset priorities and launched two businesses aligned to her core values: Excelador for business consulting and Travel Plus Them for families who wish to raise their children to be global citizens.

Donna and Lakshmi have a shared history. They talk about some fun, head-shaking, eye-rolling experiences driving through the tough times together, what they learned, and how they came out the other side better for it. Tip: don't have document version #101 and don't get fired by the client.

Lakshmi's core values are:
1) the people I love
2) growth in all aspects of life
3) experiencing the world

I'm your host, Donna Peters. I was the student teachers wanted in class. I sat still. I did my homework on time. I participated without dominating. I got straight A’s...A as in Always. As a young learner, I colored inside the lines. As a high schooler, I kept off the grass. In college, I played to my strengths.

If ever offered time travel, I will start my do-over around 9th grade with one mantra: “Donna, make straight C’s. I know you can do this.” I will pick topics because they are interesting, not because I can test well. I will seek classes that intimidate me. I will register for courses that people would find surprising.

I will measure myself on a “growth card,” rather than on a report card. Getting straight C’s will be the sweet spot on the growth card. Straight C’s will symbolize how much I embraced learning something difficult. How well I balanced taking a risk on something really new while applying the effort required to learn it.

And while I’m back there in time, I’ll also advise my younger self to keep the perm in the past, forego yellow and lighten up on the eyeliner.

BIll challenges us to think differently about entrepreneurship and growth:

  • Anyone can start a company, Not everyone should.

  • Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of a cancer cell.
  • Performance is a team sport.
  • Cash is the primary metric.

Bill's business experience and conversations with 100+ CEOs have proven there's a gap between what science knows and what businesses do. There are many things we get all wrong. His valuable book, Further, Faster, is available free as a pdf.

Your host, Donna Peters, interviews Dr. Kara Nance, CEO of WellessenceMD. Kara shares her professional and personal journey to find what makes us well. She started on the traditional path of school, marriage, mom of 4, homeowner—and realized that things in life were not working for her. So much “doing” had disconnected her from what she really needed and wanted. She listened to an inside voice and turned focus to helping people achieve their highest level of health—with the support of many she calls “family.”

Kara reminds us that the quality of our lives is defined by the quality of our relationships. She enourages us to “unplug and reboot our brains.”

Kara shares ideas for how to continue coping through COVID as the weather chills and forces us indoors. You can join Dr. Kara’s remote Zoom classes on weekday evenings. Classes focus on mindfulness, communication and relationships (Enneagram).

I made a new friend in the garden this week. The Frog Formerly Known as Prince is what I named him. So he has something to do with leadership coaching, believe it or not. As a leadership coach, I help clients identify and achieve personal goals. And the absolute top-trending issue in coaching is Time. Time is always a constraint, keeping people from achieving the goals that they set for themselves. So I first like to seek some ways that people can combine because it's very, very difficult to find something to completely remove from your to do list, but unrealistic to always keep adding to it. So I challenge people to think about the concept of combining. For example, if you'd like to read more, could you start with an audio book listening while you're doing chores or taking a walk in the neighborhood, or commuting?

If you'd like more exercise, is there an errand that you could do maybe walking rather than driving the right combination for me personally was gardening? And I'll use it as an example because it might give you some ideas as well. So gardening allows me to exercise. You'd be amazed how high you can jump when you shovel up a snake in the compost. You get some vitamin D because you're outside. You connect with fun family memories because I'm planting some of my dad's heirloom seeds. And he would be very proud of my green beans. You practice patience because plants grow if and when they want to grow and weeding is meditative for me, I smile when my husband, the chef, says he's going to the farmer's market, but he means that he's going down to my garden.

And you get to spend some time with friends and their kids. I like to invite my friends with their kids to come over and pick vegetables. Although I have noted that no one likes to pick the cabbage. I belly laugh about my garden flops. I've had a rank cantaloupe that splattered all over the kitchen. I mean, I think I'm still cleaning that up. I had the world's smallest carrots. They were invisible to the naked eye. And the very, very popular "would you like some cucumber with those worms?" And then lastly, gardening has allowed me to demonstrate some gratitude. Taking something from a seed to the dinner table is truly awesome.

So share with me if you have found an activity that helps you pull it all together for you in your Me-Suite. When time is a constraint, combine.

Delegation is the true leader's paradox.

In feedback discussions, have you ever heard:

  • You need to focus on more strategic issues.
  • Why do you send emails so late at night and on the weekends?
  • I’d like to engage you in this new important initiative, but you have so much on your plate.

Simultaneously, are you saying to yourself:

  • It’s just faster if I do it myself.
  • I don’t want to dump this task on her.
  • He’s got a lot going on already.

Often, the high performers who want to receive more meaningful work are the very ones struggling to delegate work to others. It’s a common leadership paradox.

A simple mindset shift helps us work through the paradox. I call it “delegrow.” It is impossible--absolutely impossible--for you to develop others if you do not delegate work that allows them to grow. Conversely, it is impossible--absolutely impossible--for you to develop yourself if you are not delegated work that allows you to grow. But how can you take on more without giving more to others?

Delegation doesn’t mean “shove this off on someone else.” Delegation means “appoint as my representative.” We are too often afraid that we’ll be seen as the bad boss dumping busy work on already-busy people. Or we, ourselves, are so busy, it’s a waste of time to stop and involve others. This faulty thinking works against our very goals to grow others and grow ourselves.

If we all have the mindset of “delegrow,” we will be asking different questions:

  • What activities could I assign to my team to build their skills, their knowledge, their networks, their sense of ownership?
  • What activities should I be seeking to grow myself?

Yes, brown stuff does roll downhill sometimes. The truth is, not all work is strategic and sexy. Tedious, crappy assignments exist at all levels. But, what may be crappy data clean-up work to you, could be an opportunity for someone else to learn the company’s chart of accounts. What may be mind-numbing slide editing to you, was a chance for me to hone executive presentation skills...and I was even happy doing it on a Sunday because I got exposure to the leadership team at their offsite.

We each need a mindset that growth—our personal growth and our ability to grow others—requires delegation. What will you delegate tomorrow?

I am a career coach, podcast host and faculty at a globally renowned business school. The #1 question I am asked is “what is the biggest mistake you’ve made in your career?”

I plan to be alive much longer to make many more mistakes, but thus far my #1 mistake was believing in work-life balance. Work-life balance is a common concept. Some now dress it up and call it work-life integration. The concept implies that work and life are equal sides of a seesaw. The implied goal is to keep the seesaw horizontal while managing the ups and downs. (I remember the sugar-high kid banging his end of our seesaw on the playground so hard my buck teeth almost straightened. His name was Tommy. I digress.)

I now know there should be no work-life balance. There should be only your LIFE...and everything else falls underneath that, including decisions you make about work, relationships, family, health, spirituality, passions, finances, learning. Obviously work is an important, time-consuming component, but work should be in service of the life you want to live, not be a partner in balance with it. There’s a difference.

I didn’t begin to learn this difference until I was on a red-eye from Seattle to Birmingham. I had been called home from a critically important client project that couldn't possibly progress without me--my first project as the overall lead at my new employer--and, did I mention, I planned to be promoted within the year. A blockage in Dad’s left anterior descending artery (LAD), a proximal LAD lesion, had him now under sedation. He survived the Widow Maker procedure while I was hurling at 35,000 feet for 5 hours reflecting on his principled life. Literally hurling, btw. As a two-million-miler, that remains the only flight when I’ve used the barf bag for barf.

I had quiet, dark time in the air that night to think about my own life. How do I know if I’m making the right decisions for the life I want to live? I thought, “If someone speaks at my funeral about Donna’s amazing abilities to build a merger integration playbook, I’m gonna be pissed.” I’ll be dead, of course, but I’ll also be pissed. I thought about the companies I most admire and how they make big decisions. Nike, Tesla, Johnson & Johnson, Accenture, Starbucks. They have Core Values that steer behavior, that take a stand, that create the future they envision.

I thought, why don’t I have this steerage for my own life? What are my Core Values? How do my Core Values guide decisions for the future I want to live in? And thus began my learning from a big mistake. There is no work-life seesaw to balance. There is only my LIFE at the top of a jungle gym--and all decisions I make--including those about work--are the scaffolding in service of that life I want to live, not in balance with it.

My Core Values are Curiosity, Freedom and Respect. I am curious what big mistake I will next freely make. I respect I will have much to learn from it.

In Season 2, we continue to find the amazing in everyone. Our guests are career-driven people who want to be in control of their future. They strive to lead their lives like C-Suites lead the companies we most admire. With purpose, planning and power. Just like in the C-suite, doing this well in our own Me-Suite requires 3 things: letting our personal core values guide our decisions, keeping our day to day life running smoothly, and staying fresh and relevant for the future we wish to have.

Season 1 was a top-trending podcast series in podcastlandia, so if you're a returning listener, I am bowing with gratitude and thank you for the feedback that helped shape the new season. If you're a new listener, I am doing cartwheels. Probably really poorly, but I am doing them just for you and am thrilled to be in your ear right now.

In Season 2, we will learn what works for others and explore where we had some hard lessons and failures. And we will continue to balance the aspirational with the practical sharing tips on what we can start doing differently on Monday. We will hear from C-Suite leaders, next-generation leaders and those just launching a career. We will hear from big business and entrepreneurs across industries. We will learn about amazing successes and hot messes.

The #1 learning from listeners and my own experience is that people are amazing if you give them a chance to tell their stories. So, please subscribe, share with others, and give us 5 stars if you like what you hear. It helps us continue sharing the amazing in everyone.

Season 2, Me-Suite suiteners, let's get in there!

Donna Peters interviews serial entrepreneur and adventurer, Franziska Iseli, on her latest book, The Courage Map: 13 Principles to Living Boldly. Sir Richard Branson wrote the foreward and echoes the criticality of being courageous in all we do. Some highlights include:

  • Courage is a skill that can be learned.
  • Butterflies in the stomach means you're growing.
  • Courage is feeling fear about something and doing it anyway by taking calculated risks.
  • We need courage now more than ever to face the conversations we need to be having in our global community.
  • We all need to take more chances. Take more shots.

Franziska recognizes that everyone has different "courage boundaries." For some, the monumental fear may be speaking to a stranger. For others, the fear may be learning to swim. In this episode, Franziska talks about one of the courage principles, Kindness. Donna highlights her favorites of the 13 principles: Stories, Intention and Non-attachment.

Franziska is co-founder of multiple businesses in the marketing and brand strategy space. She is on the Board of the Entrepreneur Organization (EO) and support her passion for sustainability by serving on panels at the university level and with the United Nations. Born in Switzerland, she has traveled to over 100 countries and now resides in Australia.

Franziska's core values are: love unconditionally, trust, freedom, courage, evolution and impact.

  • Be a problem-solver first and foremost. No matter your position or function, know the dynamics of the business, what drives the business, and identify ways you can contribute to the most important questions in the business. Be relevant.
  • Network, network, network--people are good and want to help. Ask for help.
  • People love to be asked to share their advice. Ask for advice.
  • Break your routines--take calculated risks
  • Speak up for yourself--advocate for what you want--ask for the raise, ask for the promotion--the worst that happens is that you hear "no"

Donna Peters partners with Amy Easton to address listeners' career questions. Amy is a Sydney-based psychology graduate, human capital expert and StrengthsFinder coach. Donna is currently coaching clients through COVID19 'surprises,' and like many, Amy recently had a career 'surprise' herself.

Donna and Amy take on the most frequent Me-Suite listener questions around career and today's job market, including:

  • I thought I had a job. Now I don't. How should I be thinking about Plan B?
  • Should I take the job offer I have right now, or wait for the role I really want?
  • How do I make the most out of a job that isn't really right for me?
  • I feel stuck where I am and need a change. How do I get unstuck?

We share personal experiences and helpful mindset models for making decisions when you're at a crossroads--such as the brain's need for safety, the concept of self-limiting beliefs and the SCARF model: status, certainty, autonomy, relatedness, fairness.

Donna Peters partners with Precious Price for an interview with Tonia Morris, Founder of Simply HR and 2019 Stevie Award Winner for Maverick of the Year.

Tonia advises on workplace culture and originated the concept of G&I: generational inclusion. Tonia recognized the need for G&I as biases, misunderstandings and tensions exist across the five generations in today's workforce. Tonia knows we need one another, that we have more in common than we do differences. "We need to all get along so we can all belong."

Tonia encourages leaders to adopt the CARE model to gain the most from the multi-generational workforce: Communicate, Appreciate, Respect, Engage.

Note: this episode was recorded during COVID-19 and prior to the racism pandemic. Follow Tonia for more on how CEOs and professionals in the workforce can create solutions for both pandemics.

Donna Peters brings back popular Episode #6 guest, Dipak Patel. Here in episode #49, Dipak talks about the power in having the mindset of a Chief Strategy Officer.

A Me-Suite mindset requires asking:

  • Where do I want to be in the future? 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years?
  • What bets do I need to place now to get to that future? These bets could be about the company you work for, the people you surround yourself with, the knowledge you acquire, the experiences you gain, the personal priorities you place around family, health, finances, etc.

Dipak challenges us to ask smart questions and surround ourselves with people who make us better. Listen also to Dipak's initial episode #6 on Having a Growth Mindset.

Me-Suite listeners, this is Donna Peters. First of all, thank you so much for being just that, a Me-Suite listener. Time is precious. There are lots of things you could be doing with your time, and you chose to spend it here. I am grateful. The Me-Suite is exactly 3 months old this week, and what an amazing ride it has been so far. We need to eat our own dog food and continue to stay fresh and relevant for the future.

I need your help in 2 areas:

1) If you love what you're hearing, write a review wherever you get your podcasts.

2) And I need your feedback on what to stop, start and continue doing with the Me-Suite podcast as we look to planning for Season 2 over the next several months.

  • What future episode topics would you like to see?
  • Are there any changes you'd like to see to the format--changes to the interview format, the length of the episodes, maybe the intro music drives you crazy?
  • What would you be expecting in Season 2 of The Me-Suite?

I'd love to hear from you. You can find me at the The Me-Suite website and email me at info@the-me-suite.com.

May I hear your thoughts in May? I will personally respond to all feedback. It would mean a lot. And I thank you in advance.

This interview was conducted just prior to the COVID19 crisis, and the prescient wisdom and optimism in this discussion gave me goosebumps when I replayed it. I left this interview a better person.

Donna Peters interviews Sarah Glass of the World Wildlife Fund. Previously she worked for USAID on international development and disaster assistance during the Ebola crisis. She has lived in Haiti, Mozambique and India. Sarah has an MBA from UVA's Darden School and serves as an advisor to their Center for Strategic and International Studies.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EPISODE:

  • What true leaders do:
    1. Set goals that area aligned to the scale of the problem we need to solve--focusing just on your piece of the challenge will not give us long-term viability
    2. Set goals that are so big no one person can solve it
    3. Mobilize teams to meet the big goals--we must collaborate because we make something better by working with others
    4. Practice optimism and empathy--if something is bothering you, envision how it could be better, and identify your role in making it better
  • You can build your empathy muscle by taking an intentional focus to understand how others are impacted
  • Sarah's Core Values: empathy, learning and optimism
  • Find your own version of a "Wine Night" habit or ritual to invest in friends and family

On National Haiku Day, Donna Peters shares the power of using the haiku poetry format to improve our communications. We need powerful, clear, succinct communications now more than ever. (And in the spirit of the haiku, this is a pithy listen.)

A haiku poem has three lines. The number of syllables in each line is 5, 7, 5 syllables for lines 1, 2, 3 respectively. Have fun distilling your key message to its essence by using the haiku format as your forcing mechanism. You don't have to militantly follow 5-7-5 syllables for your final output, of course, but the haiku discipline upfront is a very valuable exercise.

The haiku exercise helps you:

  • be clear on your intention (why are you needing to communicate)
  • de-clutter your thoughts (think about the audience and their perspective as your recipient)
  • nail down the key point (what is it you're really trying to say)
  • use only the words that matter (it's harder to write a haiku than a rambling paragraph)

Adding the haiku as a tool puts you on your way to a more impactful, clear communication--verbally or in writing. In person, on video, on the phone.

And in The Me-Suite, we call the haiku "the Myku." When you're prepping for an important interaction or message--and you want to make an impact--stop and work on your Myku. And let us know what you think.

Donna Peters interviews Estate Planning attorney, Sarah Watchko, of Hill & Watchko, LLC. This Estate Planning discussion is as accessible and enjoyable as it'll ever get. And it's a timely topic as we face unthinkable circumstances and unknowns in our society.

Who needs Estate Planning:

  • anyone over 18 years old
  • any adult with or without a bank account (it's not just about the money)
  • any adult (with or without children in the picture) (it's not just about kids and spouses)

Think like the Chief Legal Officer of your own life. Take control with thoughtful estate planning. What happens if you're incapacitated? If you die? How will financial and medical decisions get made on your behalf? How do want those decisions made? What are your wishes for your stuff, your kids, your pets, your loved ones, your causes? The truth is no one wants to have this conversation, but it's the conversation that unites every single one of us. The only thing we all truly have in common is that we will not be here forever, and we don't know when it's our time. **Let's start having these conversations from a position of strength and control.

Sarah's core values are:** kindness/empathy & take control of the circumstances

Donna Peters interviews strategist, Reza Firouzbacht, on the concept of the extremely timely topic, managing FEAR. Uncertainty has shaken our sense of health, community, security and livelihood. Many of us feel we lack control. Reza encourages us to view fear as a signal, rather than as a negative emotion. Fear is a primal instinct and an important signal that needs our attention. It's a lighthouse on whether or not we have accounted for both the data and our gut instinct to take the right actions. Fear is a signal that says, "Caution. Pay attention." We then must ask "what is in our control and what is out of our control in the situation?" For what's in our control, "what are we going to do about it?"

To manage fear, Reza pulls upon his varied experiences as a:

  • young boy growing up during the revolution and bombing raids in Iran
  • student of biology and neuroscience
  • scenario planning expert
  • champion of meditation to calm the mind

The right mindset is critical to acknowledging, processing and addressing our fears in a rational way. With a rational mind, we can process the fear: Is it False Evidence Appearing Real? Is it an overstated fear? Is it an understated fear?

Reza recommends meditation as the first best step to calming the nervous system so that we can think rationally through what we can and cannot control. And then take action on what we can control by naming that which we cannot control. Reza recommends Tara Brach's Facing Pandemic Fears with an Open Heart.

This short episode highlights 4 new, fun things to do with family and friends in this time of physical (not social) distancing. Each idea helps us flex our Me-Suite muscle:

1) Core Values: an exercise to do with the whole family. Identify the core values you have in common as a family and those that are unique to each of you. An energizing activity that will pull you closer together across all ages. If you're old enough to talk, you're old enough to think about your core values.
2) The 5 Love Languages: a discussion with partners and those closest to you. This sounds so cheesy, but it's really cool. Which of the 5 love languages makes you feel loved and appreciated? How you like to demonstrate your love and appreciation is often NOT how the other person likes to receive acts of love and appreciation. You will be surprised at what you learn about each other.
3) Virtual Pajama Party: use video to connect with friends in a casual way with no make-up, no agenda--just like a pajama party. BYOB.
4) Gardening with Kitchen Scraps. It's time to start gardening even if you don't have an outdoor space to do so. Tips for sprouting foods right in the kitchen. Fun, educational and eventually edible.

The Me-Suite is for those who are career-oriented and life-minded.  At the soul of the Me-Suite is the conviction that we should run our own personal lives with the same mindset and discipline that C-Suites use to run the companies we most admire.

Each episode interviews a senior leader, a member of the C-Suite, in a relaxed, humble, sometimes humorous discussion.  We learn C-Suite mindsets and disciplines, across functions, to help us run our own lives like the companies we most admire.  We each need a Me-Suite to:

  • stay true to our own core values

  • ensure we stay fresh and relevant for the future we want to have
