In this episode, Shelley engages in a profound conversationwith Ashley Fell, a distinguished social researcher, author, TED X speaker and Director of Advisory at the globally recognised McCrindle. Celebrating her decade-long journey with McCrindle, Ashley reflects on the ebbs and flows, or 'tensions,' that have shaped her experiences within the organisation.
With a focus on the evolution of her role, Ashley sharesinsights into the intricacies of navigating the dynamic landscape of a research-focused career. Emphasising the concept of tension, Ashley shares valuable perspectives on communication, advocating for a balanced approach by recognising that life unfolds in the midst of tensions—where nothing is purely good or bad, and many situations are not either/or but rather both/and.
This episode unfolds as a rich exploration of a decade of reflection, offering listeners a unique glimpse into Ashley's journey and the wisdom she has gained along the way.
As a bonus...here are Ashley's 10 reflections after 10 years:
Life is lived in the tension: Nothing is all good or all bad, a lot of things are not either/or, but rather both/and. Recognising that every situation has benefits and challenges is helpful to remember.
Say yes to opportunities that scare you: It’s okay to feel scared and like an imposter when taking on something new, but know those feelings can be overcome and don’t let them stop you. We grow the most when we are out of our comfort zone and we rarely ever feel ready, so say yes and learn along the way.
Great colleagues are invaluable: We spend a third of our day at work, so getting along with colleagues is not only helpful for your work but for your wellbeing and sense of community. And if you’re lucky, can also lead to great friendships.
People underestimating you can be a blessing in disguise: It might seem counter intuitive, but low expectations can actually play to your favour, allowing you to prove people wrong and exceed their expectations.
Words of encouragement should not be undervalued: A kind word to someone has the power to put a smile on their face, brighten their day and have greater impacts on them than you might ever realise.
Progress, not perfection: Perfection is a myth that stops us from getting things done. Your first attempt at something is rarely good. And that’s totally fine. It gives you something to build off of. Don’t let imperfection stop you from trying at all.
Regular rest is essential: Big holidays are amazing and you should definitely take them, but regular rhythms of rest (daily, weekly) are vital to a sustainable career.
Reading is a secret power: Non-fiction can teach us so much and so can fiction as it allows us to grow in empathy. I’m also a firm believer that reading makes you a better communicator.
Learning takes place through osmosis: Formal learning opportunities are awesome, but don’t forget about the passive learning that takes place by being around others. Although it often takes place without you knowing it, putting yourself in the orbit of people you respect is a great way to learn.
Don’t forget to laugh along the way: Humour connects us. I’ve found the moments of laughter are the ones that I remember. Humour is worth pursuing - in presentations, the workplace and in relationships. Having fun along the way is important.
She thanks all those who have had an impact on her and her career so far. Especially Mark McCrindle who has modelled empowering and enlarging leadership so well. 🙏

Shelley loves a random conversation. Today’s guest is Kim O’Keeffe, who she met on a plane earlier this year on a trip to Brisbane. After a great conversation on the plane, they found they had a lot in common on their thoughts around leadership, professional growth and careers.
Kim, the ever-curious and optimistic spirit, is currently the State Member for Parliament for Shepparton District. A true community champion, she's devoted to fighting for her electorate's needs and supporting the people of Shepparton.
Growing up in the embrace of regional Victoria, Kim's roots run deep, instilling in her a strong sense of connection to her community. It's clear that her upbringing has shaped her passion for serving her constituents and advocating for their well-being.
Kim's journey, starting at the tender age of 15, was guided by inspiring mentors who encouraged her to envision a future and map out her path. Words like "good people don't stand still" were the catalyst for her entrepreneurial aspirations.
The influence of others and their belief in her have been driving forces, propelling her toward seizing opportune moments.

In this episode, Shelley speaks with Grayson James, a seasoned expert with over three decades of experience assisting Executives, Boards and Senior Management teams in enhancing their collaborative business performance.
A common misconception is that effective collaboration hinges on the level of cooperation exhibited by our colleagues—a notion Grayson opposes, considering it a costly oversight. To Shelley, the term 'collaboration' is often carelessly tossed around in many workplaces. Grayson simplifies it to 'working together with other people to get important stuff done,' an essence critical to the existence of organisations.
Delving deeper, they consider whether the rising emphasis oncollaboration aligns with a decline in hierarchical structures. Grayson has seen a shift over recent years in the nature of interactions and expectations, steering away from the top-down command and control model, which does not fly anymore, especially by the younger generation.
Embracing a collaborative leadership approach, Graysonacknowledges the necessity of command and control, consensus, or even no consensus, depending on the given context.
The true challenge lies in how we discern what is needed at this time and to pivot and respond effectively in the given situation’.

Culture is something we could endlessly explore, there are so many different perspectives and opinions.
In this episode, Shelley talks with Lisa Carlin about working within your culture, as opposed to changing it.
Lisa is a strategy execution specialist and the co-founder of Future Builders Group, a network of organisational development specialists. She works with Leaders to turbo charge their transformation projects and change.
Strategy execution, Transformation, Change, Projects, implementation, cultural change, digital transformation – these words all mean something slightly different and they mean something different to each individual. They all motivate a feeling of ‘let’s do something significant to move forward’.
Lisa’s first step to developing her transformation journey began in South Africa the 1990's when she started working in systems development. This encouraged a curiosity in change management. Following this, she started working for McKinsey on strategy projects. The firm delivered amazing strategy work, but just like systems development, didn’t always go as planned because due to people.
After moving to Australia, Lisa started working for a culture change organisation where ideas from a transcendental, meditation movement where used to developed ‘culture in the workplace’. Culture was not used or understood in the workplace in these years and it inspired Lisa to start her own business combining all the different skills learnt over the years.
Lisa's learnings in strategy, technology, culture and people work, led her to create a multidisciplinary transformation perspective.
There are three stages to multidisciplinary transformation and Lisa will guide you through these during the conversation.

In this conversation, Shelley delves into the inspiring narrative of Max Ginpil, whose journey began with an appetite for confronting challenges head-on and embarking on a quest to 'do things better'.
His aspiration to 'do better', even when others hesitated, propelled Max from a dedicated team player to a visionary team leader and eventually a dynamic divisional leader. Curiosity drove him to ask the pivotal question: "How can we do things better?"
This curiosity not only fuels his own growth but also ignites a sense of safety and curiosity within those around him, fostering an environment where questions like "why" are not threats, but rather gateways to innovation.
Max recognises the affect of stifling curiosity, acknowledging that in its absence, rigidity takes root and the very essence of leadership dwindles.
As we journey through Max's experiences, we are reminded that nurturing a culture of safety and value is essential, empowering individuals to explore new paths, employ their skills in uncharted ways and ultimately become architects of transformative leadership.

This is the final episode of the three part series exploring feedback. In this conversation Dwight and Shelley talk about GIVING feedback. How to do it well, what to avoid and making sure you’re really clear on what’s in it for the person receiving it.
They talk about the difference between offering advice/opinions, holding people accountable and giving feedback. Before giving any kind of feedback it’s essential to provide the context so the receiver understands the broader purpose.
It’s even more important to ask permission…yet this is often the thing that’s missed. Giving unsolicited feedback (or advice) can damage relationships and diminish the psychological safety in a team.

In this episode Shelley speaks with, Exercise Physiologist, Nutritionist and Neuroscientist, Paul Taylor, about the effects of poor sleep both at a chronic level as well as an acute level.
Paul shares that it is good quality sleep that allows our brains to rest, get rid of toxins and help with the repair process throughout our body.
When we have poor sleep it increases our levels of cortisol, reduces our desire to be active, makes us crave crap food and reduces our cognitive performance - which is essential for leaders to operate effectively.
This is a conversation you need to listen to, then make changes around, particularly if you’re feeling tired, stressed, burnt out or fatigued. Just getting your body into a good sleep rhythm will have big flow on benefits into all areas of your life.

When you first move into people leadership there’s a lot of stuff that you’re going to need to stop doing - this is often the hardest concept to get your head around.
Anna shares the importance of recognising that leadership isn’t the only developmental growth pathway, so if leadership isn’t for you then don’t do it, don't get railroaded into it. Take another avenue (e.g. towards technical expertise), find a pathway that suits you.

Like paid employment, volunteers no longer remain with the one organisation for a lifetime, so working to retain them is a big focus. She talks about the value that comes from volunteering and the transferrable skills that are gained, particularly for those in leadership. They talk about leaders when they first start out believing that, "to be successful they need to be right". While most leaders self-correct over time, the worst leaders are one's that don't. They end up being the most opinionated where people don’t like to challenge them, so they rarely get the feedback they need to drive sustainable change.
Hamish shares that crucial conversations are most effective when the other person knows you care. It is through true care, empathy and genuinely wanting to support them that you see the best outcomes.

It includes simple and effective strategies like pausing for 60-90 seconds between tasks or meetings to give yourself a little time to breathe and space to empty your cognitive load and prepare for the next thing.
She says “overwhelm isn’t just one thing, once. It’s a complex mix of loads and emotions that while vital for human functioning, can get out of control or start running our life. Understanding what overwhelm is and what it’s made of will give us the power to redefine it, to not fall victim to its powerful vortex, and to instead be the master of our work thoughts and emotions”
To transition out of overwhelm we must pause to consider what is the main things that are contributing to it, and then, what are some alternative ways to respond and work through it so we can continue to make ‘free progress’.

In this conversation Shelley speaks with New Zealand’s straight-talking strategist, Alicia Mckay, about being strategic and about the power of asking questions.
Today, more than ever, it is harder and more important to create the space to be more strategic as a leader. She says “finding time to do this doesn’t happen by accident”, we must schedule, prioritise and be intentional about how we use our time and find the right space to enable ourselves to get a different perspective.
Alicia shares her views on the power of questions saying “asking questions is the single most useful leadership behaviour”. If you only decided to work on one thing as a leader it would be to create a default to questions…“just ask another question…” It is through questions that we are better able to maintain perspective, seek to understand and teach people to solve their own problems. It is through questions that we can teach the rule rather than solve the problem and truly build capability within our team.

In this episode Shelley Flett speaks about perspective and how liberating and beneficial taking on a broader view of the world can be.
Her key message is not necessarily to give up your own perspective or how you see the world, but more to loosen the grip that you have on it. Notice when it’s not helpful - when it begins to cloud your judgement or create bias or shut people down. Or when it doesn't allow expansion and innovation and the creativity we all need to thrive.
For leaders, perspective is so important…being able to hold multiple different ways of experiencing the world, without necessarily having an opinion and certainly not having judgement towards another person.

In this episode Shelley speaks with CEO of Auscontact Association, Fiona Keough, about the challenges leaders face with unplanned absences in their team.

When you can refer back to something that everyone has committed to it allows individuals to identify when and where they may not have aligned with a certain value and then take action to shift their behaviour.
Values based conversations aren't just about your staff embodying and living the values, it's also making sure that you are doing the same. "We don't get it right 100% of the time but we do try to minimise the times that we get it wrong".

As leaders, people should be at the centre of everything we do. But thanks to an outdated management system, where humans were seen as units of labour (and the objective was to get as much as you can out of them), many leaders still struggle being human.
In this conversation Shelley speaks with Mark LeBusque, fellow leadership consultant and multiple author of Being Human and The Little Book of Human. Mark shares how important it is to be authentic. "It takes a lot of energy to work with someone who’s inconsistent in their attitudes and behaviours - energy that could be much better spent".
They talk about awareness, judgement, curiosity and intention - are you coming from a good place. It's a fabulously human conversation with couriers arriving and dogs barking and a conversation that endures regardless - it's very typical of the world we're now working in.

In this episode Shelley shares her thoughts on managing time including:
Reducing distractions: Turn off your notifications, pop-ups and even that tiny little envelope that sits in the bottom corner of your screen. Aim to only check and respond to emails once every 1-2 hours if possible. You'll be amazed at what you can accomplished when you're not constantly interrupted.
Being intentional: Make sure you're really clear on 'why' you're doing something. This includes attending meetings, running reports, catching up with a colleague for a coffee and even going for a walk at lunchtime. Keeping your intention front of mind will minimise distractions and ensure you get full value from the activity.
Managing your energy: If you're tired, stressed, burnt out or overwhelmed you're going to be less effective with your time. Learn what activities give you energy and make time to do them regularly. Note there's a difference between activities you enjoy (e.g. drinking a glass or red wine while cooking dinner which will impact your mental clarity the following day) versus activities that are good for you (e.g. drinking a herbal tea while watching the sunset).
There are endless ways to manage your time and not all things work for all people. So if you are looking for more ideas please get in touch for a conversation that is specific to you.

Succession planning is something leaders should start to consider from the moment they enter a role - this is the topic of this conversation with my sisters, Narelle Burke and Kristy Flett.
Succession planning is about reducing single person dependency tasks along with providing development and growth opportunities. Kristy share’s, in her workplace, how is helps to “boost morale, increases engagement and reduce the pressure and stress that can come with being the only person who knows how to perform a function or a role”.
Narelle’s approach to succession planning is that it’s a “long term process in a short term world. You don’t think about succession planning when you need it, you start to build it up over a period of time.
It gives your staff an opportunity to step up and learn and grow so that you can also step up and learn and grow.

This conversation with Narelle Burke talks argues that delaying taking action isn't always procrastination saying the sometimes we need to take the extra time for creative and deep thinking.
Narelle has appropriately coined this term ‘Percolation’ and demonstrates the value of embracing it rather than trying to push yourself to deliver something less than amazing.
She says “One of the luxuries that we do not give enough value to is the ability to step back, bring different pieces of information together, look at whether there’s synergies or whether you want to decompress, pull stuff apart and bring different pieces together...I think that’s one of the strengths that I bring to roles is this ability to pull quite separate distinct information together to form different patterns and different ways of moving forward.”

In this episode Shelley speaks with the publisher of The Dynamic Leader, Lesley Williams, who owns Major Street Publishing. Lesley shares her experience of working for her dad early in her career and the lessons he taught her around trust and empowerment.
She shares one of the keys to successful leadership is being “nice to people” and supporting them through the good and the bad. She recites the words of her dad that “no one ever responds to being told off” and how she’s applied this philosophy with her own team. It’s important to recognise that we all make mistakes and that we can use them as opportunities to learn and grow.
Lesley founded Major Street Publishing in 2009 and works with authors to publish books on leadership, business, the share market, property markets, superannuation or personal financial planning. She says that she learns something new from every book and believes that the key to getting a book written is about finding what works for you and remain focused on the outcome (not necessarily the process).

In this episode Shelley speaks with Justine Teggelove, co-found of Rodine and Build-in-common, about her journey through leadership and about the importance of ‘paying-it-forward’. Justine learnt really early that leadership is about working together as a team - “it’s not about me it’s about everyone else...it’s about the team”.
Justine is one of the most authentic leaders I know, she says if you know yourself well and you be yourself in all areas of your life then people will see your authenticity - you just have to be yourself.
On the topic of ‘paying it forward’ Justine believes that no one has got to where they are in their life on their own. Her philosophy, when it comes to imparting knowledge, is to “share the shit out of it” - don’t take it to the grave - what you know is likely to be helpful to someone else.

In this episode Shelley speaks with Spiz Constandinou, Head of Business at Australia Post, about leadership and, in particular, accountability.
From the beginning of his own leadership journey, he has centred his approach around engagement saying “without engagement you have nothing”. He believes that trust, openness and transparency underpin engagement along with having a growth mindset and being your authentic self.
When he talks about accountability he says the conversations should be democratic and come with questions, vulnerability and operating from a position of humility. Leaders should understand their people, ask the right questions in the right frequency and at the right time and have a two-way discussion that “gets to the core”.
Spiz is one of the most in-tune leaders you will ever meet. He lives and breathes these practices and says “you don’t want people to perform in spite of you…you want people to perform because they’re inspired by you and because they respect you.”

In this episode you will hear Shelley read Chapter 6 of the book on the Underpinning Theme of Time. Time is one of our most precious resources, yet we use it like it’s infinite. So much is wasted on doing things that don’t need to be done, worrying about things that can’t be changed and focusing on things for longer than we need to.
When a leader can manage their time, energy and focus effectively, everything else becomes easier … so this chapter is all about helping you understand what matters.

In this episode Shelley speaks with Fiona Preston, experienced senior leader across a variety of industries, about all things leadership. Fiona says “the role of a leader is to help their people to learn, thrive and fail!”.
They talk about the need for humility - where leaders can admit when they’re wrong, which in turn, allows them to deliberately tune into what might be making others uncomfortable. It also gives them the courage to ask for help and use the strengths of their people rather than taking it all on themselves.
They also talk about how pomegranates are like leadership and whether to chew or swallow the seeds whole!

In this episode you will hear Shelley read Chapter 2 of the book on Unspoken Problems. She explores the underlying problems leaders face and don’t talk about with anyone else, often avoiding the subject completely. The unspoken problems are generally the root cause or underlying driver of negative behaviours playing out in a team. When a leader can address the unspoken problems the behaviours disappear and the culture of the team improves.

In this episode you will hear Shelley read Chapter 1 of the book on Spoken Problems. She shares the problems leaders face and are comfortable talking about with their peers, their managers and even their teams. What’s often missing when these problems are discussed, however, is the root cause or underlying driver. In other words, the spoken problem is generally the result of something else going on but that’s often left unsaid.
