Back in November 2018 the Women's Outlook show was taken over by a group of young people who've been part of a project called Generation Snowstorm.

Over the summer they took part in a summer school that explored why and how to cultivate social and ecological justice as a form of radical self-care, and went on to produce and co-host Yaz's monthly show on Ujima 98fm

As well as hearing more about the project and its impact this podcast includes interviews with Brigstowe telling us about World AIDS Day and Youth Stop AIDS, Eat Up For Starters talking about their DIY music workshops to tackle the lack of diversity on our music stages, and Malaika Kegode (featured in Bristol's BME Powerlist 2018) exploring the Bristol poetry scene.

On Wednesday this week a great event will be taking place at the Malcolm X Centre in City Road. It is being put on by Interculture as part of their Women Talking series, and it will look at the hot topic subject of what Muslim women wear on their heads. However, unlike most of the discussions of this type that we see in the mainstream media, this one will have actual Muslim women explaining their culture.

The event will run from 7:00pm to 9:30pm at the Malcolm X Community Centre, 141 City Road, BS2 8YH. For further details see Facebook.

In August Cheryl welcomed Sahar from Muslim Engagement & Development (MEND) and Lisa from Interculture into the studio. Their conversation makes a great trailer for Thurday's event.

Yaz was joined in the studio by Isobel Tarr - artist, activist and creator of The Channel project.

Isobel explains how The Channel was originally devised as a means for communicating across the water border between Calais and the UK. Creating human connection and conversation between people in the Calais migrant camp and people in Oxford.

This time the borders are within the UK, and conversations will happen between people in immigration detention and people in Bristol.

We listen to voices, stories and reflections from people being held in immigration detention here in the UK, and explore the power of creating space to explore these issues, and our responses, together.

The Channel phone booth will be appearing in different spaces in Bristol between 15th and 20th September, and the project will culminate in an event on 27th September - giving people the resources to prepare in case they are detained, and to consider strategies for ending detention.

This interview was originally broadcast on Wednesday 29th August 2018.

Today in Bristol the community union, Acorn, held a demonstration outside the City Council offices in Temple Street. They were protesting on behalf of two women who are about to be made homeless because the safe house they are living in is about the clsoe down. Cutbacks in and fragmentation of social services are leading to system that fail, and even persecute, those in greatest need. Cheryl spoke to one of the organisers of the protest.
